“There is good reason to suspectcriminal acts. I have told the govern-ment to launch an investigation thatwill end with the culprits being foundand punished in an exemplary fash-ion...I have asked the justice ministerto pay close attention to the sentencesthey get,” he said while attending amemorial service on Tuesday for thethree firefighters killed on duty in theVar.

blaze on Sunday afternoon are furi-ous that it took several hours for thefire fighting to properly begin. Fourhouses were completely destroyedand a further 18 damaged when firebroke out at around 2:30pm in thetown’s la Buffe cemetery, on the D36

near the Route de Vence.By 3:15 the fire was spreading fast

across the Val de Cagnes, where itdestroyed five houses and thenspread onwards and eastwards acrossVal Fleuri towards St Laurent du Var,the southern outskirts of La Gaude

and the 350 homes in the Domainede l’Etoile.

“Someone phoned me to tell methe fire had reached our house, so Irushed straight home, pushed myway through the police roadblocksand ran into the house at 5pm,” Eric

de Brocart told The Riviera Gazette.“The fire was only 20 metres from thehouse. The firefighters didn’t arriveuntil at least two to three hours afterthe fire had started. I was absolutelyfrantic. It was very scary, but oncethey arrived they were wonderful andput the fire out straight away.”

Two helicopters began water-bombing the fire early in the after-noon,and 300 firefighters were even-tually mobilized. But the first of fourspecialist Canadair water bombersdidn’t arrive on the scene until 6pm.

Fire investigators suspect the blazewas not an accident, saying thateither the fire ‘jumped’ several hun-dred metres or it was deliberatelystarted in two places. The suspicionof arson is backed up by an eye wit-ness who reports finding charredwood piled at the base of a burnedtree in a third area of Cagnes thatwasn’t otherwise affected by fire.

But Vincent Chery, directeuradjoint of the ONF 06 (OfficeNational des Forêts Alpes Maritimes)told Nice Matin,“the fire spread in thedirection of the wind and the phe-nomenon of fires jumping distancesis well documented. During a largefire in the Tanneron, for example, theflames managed to jump right acrossLac de Saint Cassien.”

“The father is really uglywith great big tusks. It’s reallyscary when they’re mauraud-

ing around the garden. Oneeven startled our neighbour bypressing his snout up againstthe window.”

Meanwhile a Var shepherdhas other ideas. ChristopheGermain took in Marguerite, awild boar, after her motherwas shot during the huntingseason last year. SUMMER DEATHTOLL SET TO RISETHE heatwave across thecountry led to more than11,000 extra deaths over thesummer as temperaturessoared to over 40 degrees, writes Jenny Paul

And on Sunday, France’shealth minister predicted thatthe number could rise even fur-ther to 12,000.

In Nice the CHU (CentreHospitalier Universitaire deNice) recorded a 40 per centrise in the number of deathscompared to August last year.

“The emergency room is rel-atively calm now,” GenevièveRobiquet told The RivieraGazette, “and we didn’t haveany difficulties with our mor-

tuary. Thanks to the profes-sionalism of our staff we hadthe situation under control.Staff volunteered to help if weneeded them.”

Of the 32,065 deaths record-ed in France during August, only 57 were at Nice’s CHU.Paris was hardest hit, leadingsome in the French media toclaim that it was not a nationalproblem but a Parisian one.

However the scale of thetragedy nationwide becameapparent as many of the bodieslay unclaimed.

“Last night there were 300people who hadn’t been buriedbecause their family had notturned up to claim the body. Is

that the government’s fault?”asked the state secretary for theelderly, Hubert Falco last weekin response to accusations ofbad management.

Many relatives have nowbeen traced, and the final 63unclaimed bodies, who did nothave any family, were buried inpaupers graves yesterday.

In the light of much soul-searching in the media the gov-ernment has now proposed aplan to scrap one of France’seleven bank holidays each year, with revenue generated fromkeeping the country ‘open forbusiness’ for the extra daygoing towards helping theelderly.

TWO new books examiningFranco-American relationshipshave just been published.

Sixty Million Frenchmen Can’tBe Wrong was written by twoAmericans after a two-and-a-half year stay in Paris.

“Our theory is the structure ofFrance is consistent with thespirit of the French,” explain theauthors.“From how the govern-ment works to how France han-dles social issues, and the socialfunction of business, the Frenchhave the system they need.”

Another American book is hit-ting the bestseller lists in France– a translation of ‘112 GripesAbout The French’.

The title, originally a booklethanded out to American GI’swho were stationed in Franceafter WW2, covered aspects ofFrench life that often confusedthe Americans.

Typically it answered “whathave these frog eaters ever donefor us?” with a three page list ofprominent French intellectuals.

The book, published underthe title Our Friends by LeCherche Midi, has already sold15,000 copies.

TWO new reports releasedthis week give an insight intothe working habits of theFrench.

One revealed that Frenchproductivity is higher than thatof the Americans, while theother points to young, educatedFrench workers fleeing thecountry – the favoured destina-tion being the UK.

A study released by theCNRS,the French state researchinstitute, showed that emigra-tion has risen by 30 per centover the past ten years. Hightaxes and strict regulations arethought to be to blame for thoseleaving their homeland.

“Overall,a lot of French émi-grés are trying to flee a rigid,hyper-taxed, over-controlledand over-regulated society. Ifthey could do the same thing inFrance they would,” said theinstitute’s Beatrice Sacvarieau.

The other report, compiledby Geneva-based agency OIT(Organisation International duTravail),claims that French peo-ple are more productive thanAmericans.

It claims that Americans gen-erate an income of US$32 anhour, while the French produceUS$35 an hour – but,of course,Americans tend to work muchlonger than 35 hours each week.

LOCAL monks have lost a battle toprevent their island being swampedby hordes of unwelcome tourists.

The Cistercian monks are the onlyinhabitants of the unspoilt Ile StHonorat, just off the coast of Cannes.

Since 1995, they have been able tokeep visitor numbers manageable byrunning their own ferry service to theisland with a limit of only 400 ticketsa day.

But now the courts have ruled thatrival ferry companies can operateservices to the island as well.

“We already have too many visi-tors,” Vladimir Abbe, one of theisland’s 27 monks – who are silent forat least twelve hours every day – toldThe Riviera Gazette by email.

“A lot of visitors leave rubbish and

broken glass. We say ‘come for the day,but please respect the island as apeaceful place for everyone to enjoy’.

Film maker Max Ryerson tells Jenny Paul about moving to Hollywood, working with the stars, and the excitement of making his first film ...

WHEN I was ten myparents gave me a video

camera and I started shootingshort animation movies to passthe time while waiting for themto finish work.

I used to spend hours in theiroffice making films of my toysoldier collection and re-enact-ing the battle of Waterloo.

I was born in Belgium butmoved to Monaco before goingto boarding school in Scotland.I went to Gordonstoun, theschool Prince Charles went to,but I think I had a rather easiertime than he did!

After A-Levels I came backto Monaco to the University ofSouthern Europe where I stud-ied for a BSc in BusinessAdministration and then start-ed my own financial businessin Monaco.

But I had always wanted tostudy film,so in 2001 I enrolledat the New York Film College. After that I went to Los Angelesto finish my studies andworked on various TV showsincluding Ally MacBeal, Buffythe Vampire Slayer and Angel.

I base myself wherever thereis work and I have homes inMonaco and LA.

Last year was a very excitingyear for me as I premiered myfirst film in Monaco. It’s calledSempre Occultus, that’s MI6’smotto, and it means ‘alwayssecret’, as it’s a spy film.

We shot it in five differentcountries but mainly on The

Riviera. Now I need a distribu-tor to put it on TV.

I’ve just launched my ownfilm production company butas an independent film makerit can be difficult finding thefunding.

Show business isn’t as glam-orous as it sounds. You work 18hours a day and it’s a lot of hardwork, especially when you’reworking with a small budgetand you have to be disciplinedand work to a tight and well-organised schedule.

But I have met a couple of thebig Hollywood stars includingMartin Sheen, Rob Lowe andTom Hanks. They were all real-ly nice. I think if actors get areputation for difficult behav-iour, they soon start being outof work.

You do get diva-like behav-iour,though.When I was work-ing on Buffy, Sarah MichelleGellar used to come out andscreen the extras. Any verypretty girls were usually kickedoff the set!

When I’m not working I lovethe outdoors. I have a friendwho has a sailing boat and welike to go out on that, and I alsolove waterskiing. In winter I likegoing skiing in Isola or Genevaif I have the time. When I goout to eat my favourite place isThe Waterfront in Fontvielle.

At the moment I’m inMonaco holding a two-dayseminar on film making at theCameo Academy of Dramatic

Art on September 6 and 7, andI’ll cover everything from orig-inal film concept to final distri-bution.

After that I am going toBrussels to look at options for aseries of comic books and anovel called Ramses byChristian Jacques, as I like the

idea of making an epic film. It’s always been my dream to

work in films.I’ve always want-ed to be an actor or a director,so I’m very happy.

But I do like living down hereso I would like to do more workon the Riviera than inLA if I can.
