This degree focuses on documentary film-making, set withinthe critical study of media, culture and society.

You’ll learn to use digital technologies creatively anddevelop your film-making experience.

Teaching and assessment

Study at the cutting edgeYou will be taught by a dynamic group of experiencedacademic-practitioners and award-winning filmmakers.

The Film Practice strand of the BA Film and Media is taughtby research-active academics and academics who areengaged in professional practice.

The team has particular strengths in the areas of worldcinema and documentary as a critical and creative practice.

Teaching methodsA wide range of teaching methods will be used, appropriateto the subject matter. Film practice modules will bedelivered in purpose built studio spaces with access to thelatest industry standard filmmaking equipment.

Assessment methodsYou will be assessed via course work and writtenexaminations. Course work includes submission of films,written essays, audio-visual essays, websites, diaries andproduction logs. You will undertake a mixture of group andindividual assessments.

Film and media careersMedia and communication courses focus on thecommunication of information across a variety of mediumsand cover a broad range of subjects from the highlypractical to the theoretical.

You will develop a variety of skills that are extremely usefulfor employment, such as critical analysis, research,teamwork, flexibility, a creative and independent approachto tasks and the ability to work to a brief and meetdeadlines. You will be exposed to a broad commercial andcultural awareness of the media and creative industries,both from academic staff and media practitioners.

If your aim is to work directly within the media industry it isimportant to build up a portfolio of work, gaining as muchexperience as possible. Examples include contributing toyour university paper or other publications, or working for TVproduction or radio outlets, PR or advertising agencies.Persistence and motivation are vital due to the popularity ofthis sector.

Careers in public relations, journalism, media planning,broadcasting and advertising are the most popular choicesfor our graduates, however graduates with the ability tocommunicate information clearly and effectively will bebeneficial to any organisation.
