Cavalia: Beautiful, magical and spectacularThe big white tent on the

corner of Kenaston Blvd and Sterling Lyon Parkway

took a month to assemble and build. It opened last week ready for it's Winnipeg run. Originally scheduled to run from September 10 to October 4, the show was extended by two weeks and the prodcution runs to October 18.

Odysseo was created by one of the co-founders of Cirque du Soleil. The show is very similar to the artistry, choreography and acrobatics in a Cirque du Soleil show except Cavaila Odysseo involves horses, lots of horses.

Sixty-five horses and 45 humans performers take part in the show.

Simply put, the show was spectacular, two thumbs up, five out of five stars. It was the performances of the horses, the beautiful set design, artistry and choreography by both horses and human performers were impressive. A live band perched above both sides of stage played the entire show. The lighting, and most importantly, the big white tent, equally impressive.

Watching a group of horses perform at Cavalia was something

you'd see in a Disney movie. This was real live horses and I kept saying to myself, "Hey, how'd they do that". I was definitely impressed by the horses. I can't imagine the amount of hours of training that needs to happen to have the horses perform the way that they do.

In the finale, water flooded the stage and the illusion of the stage being transformed to a lakeshore scene was very Cirque-inspired. Yes, first class entertainment and that is Cavalia Odysseo.

Ely Buendia & His Band on Oct. 4 at Club Regent Event Centreby aLfie vera mella

Eraserheads' Ely Buendia and his backing band will play Winnipeg this October 4 at Club Regent Event Centre. The setlist will consist mainly of classic songs by Buendia's former band Eraserheads. So, attendees can expect hit songs that include "Ligaya," "Pare Ko," "Magasin," "Alapaap," and "Ang Huling El Bimbo."

Ely Buendia's backing band is composed of seasoned Philippine musicians who are

also artists in their own rights:Nitoy Adriano (guitars) - of The Jerks and The OktavesMayo Baluyut (bass) - solo artist and songwriterRyan "Gox" Goan (keyboards) - of DominoWendell Garcia (drums) - of Barbie's Cradle and Pupil

Opening Ely Buendia's concert are Winnipeg's own local bands such as the Alternative Rockers Lykosa and The 12/21 and the Hip-hop group Santribo,

which also features the now Winnipeg-based Konflick (formerly of the Philippine Hip-hop group Death Threat).

This show was brought to North America by the efforts of Diane Ventura (EB Management, DVent Productions); Day Cabuhat; Le-Van De Guzman, Haro De Guzman, and Bojie Yangco (MCY Entertainment), and of course, Winnipeg's local producer Marby Gutierrez (Pinoy Tribe Entertainment).

Winnipeg band Lykosa releases EP Sept. 26 at Good Will ClubWinnipeg local Alternative Rock band Lykosa releases its debut album officially on September 26 at The Good Will Social Club (625 Portage Ave.). The five-track EP, entitled Butterflies, is a well-crafted offering that showcases the band's penchant for sugary

grating Emo-influenced guitars, solid and structured drum patterns, melodic round-sounding basslines, and vocal harmonies with hints of piano and strings. Lykosa is comprised by Kitz Quitane (vocals/guitar), Kervy

Quitane (guitar), Michael Borja (bass), and Joseph David (drums/percussion). Some of the band's seeming musical influences that may be gleaned from the sound of the album include 30 Seconds to Mars and Rivermaya.

Foreigners push lesser tax billForeign business groups in the Philippines are pushing the government to pass a bill to lessen the amount of income tax. According to the group, it will edge up our country into competing with other economies within Asia.

At present, Philippines charge the second highest personal income tax and the highest corporate income tax among the countries that are part of the ASEAN.

The Joint Foreign Chamber (JFC) stated that there is pattern in reducing individual and corporate tax rates in neighboring

economies to make their countries more competitive and that the Philippines should keep up with the trend.

Some views contradict the proposal as this may lead to a deficit. However, JFC believes that reducing these rates will invite more investments and trades.

The JFC also said that it supports the raising of consumption taxes to compensate reforms in corporate and individual tax rate. Meanwhile, taxes have been raised on alcohol, cigarettes and tobacco.

Filipino bag maker makes buzz in NY and Hollywood

Banago, a Philippine made bag and accessories goes for a one time preview of their 2016 spring summer collection for the Designers and agents (D & A) show in New York.

Economic war rocks the world

Planet Earth has shrunk so much that more than seven billion people’s lives are

intertwined and their countries’ economies are inter-dependent with one another. If one country goes down, it pulls down many others, too. It did not then come as a surprise that when China’s stock market crashed, it was like a huge meteor falling in the middle of the Pacific Ocean causing a giant tsunami that reached the shores of more than 100 countries around the Pacific Rim. But the extent of the damage goes far beyond the Pacific Rim. The tremor was also felt in Europe, Central Asia, Middle East, Africa, and countries around the Atlantic Ocean. In other words, the whole world was shaken.

But compounding the economic fallout of China’s stock market, China deliberately devalued her yuan; thus, igniting an economic war that could hurt

the U.S. dollar, the Euro, and other financial instruments. By devaluing the yuan, China's export products became more competitive and attractive. On the other hand, it made the U.S. dollar stronger; thus, her export prices go up, making them more expensive and less competitive.

Last August 24, as the Americans were sleeping soundly in the middle of the night, China’s stock market crashed. It was called “Black Monday” because the market lost more than 40% since it peaked last June. It was reminiscent of the U.S. stock market’s crash in 1929, which ushered in the Great Depression. Needless to say, the U.S. would retaliate to China’s devaluation of the yuan. And who knows what China is going to do next?

One of the most effective weapons of an economic war is sanction. The U.S. used it against Cuba, North Korea, Iran,

and lately, Russia. When Russia invaded and annexed Crimea, the U.S. and her European Union (EU) allies imposed a series of debilitating sanctions against Russia. As a result the country fell into recession. Politics of oil

With the plummeting price of crude oil and the ruble in freefall – economists said that the ruble could plunge to 80 to the dollar -- Russia has to tap her “sovereign reserve funds” to make up for the budget deficit. With 70% of her budget coming from oil exports, the price of crude oil falling -- from $110/bbl (per barrel) to around $40/bbl -- is battering the economy. Some experts in the industry believe that the oil’s fall was due to a “conspiracy” between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia – the first and second top oil producers -- to glut the oil market and bring down the price of oil; thus, hurting the world’s third top oil producer, Russia, who just a year ago was the first top oil producer. “Sweetheart deal”

But Russia’s bane is China’s boon. As the world’s biggest consumer of oil and gas, the plummeting prices of crude oil had an unintended consequence – it helped China economically in a big way. It didn’t take long before China and Russia agreed on a huge gas deal. In May 2014, they signed a $400-billion preliminary agreement to supply China with Siberian gas in the next 30 years. But at what price? Although it was never disclosed what the price was going to be, it must be a good deal for China because she had been negotiating with Russia for many years but couldn’t agree on the price. With Russia hurting for export revenue, China must have gotten a “sweetheart deal.”

But recently, the deal turned sour; the final signing of the contract was delayed indefinitely because of China’s declining demand for gas, which stems from China’s economic downturn. Shattered dream

Now, the cat is out of the bag – China’s economy is cooling off.

Her growth rate is down to 7%, way below the two-digit GDP only a few years back. And with the sudden devaluation of the yuan and a mysterious – and ominous -- explosion of a warehouse full of toxic chemicals, the future doesn’t bode well for the superstitious Chinese. Is China in panic? The signs are there. For President Xi Jinping, this scenario would shatter his “Chinese Dream.” of economic prosperity and strong military.

And for all these to happen just a few weeks prior to his first state visit to the U.S. in mid-September, it would certainly weaken his image as a strong world leader. Indeed, Xi’s visit couldn’t have come at a worse time, which begs the question: Can he afford to leave Beijing at a time of uncertainty at home? It makes one wonder if Xi’s political rivals would take advantage of his absence and do something stupid?Economic espionage

It was reported in the news that the Obama administration is preparing to issue sanctions in retaliation to the wave of cyber-economic espionage by Chinese hackers, who are believed to “have stolen everything from nuclear power plant designs to search engine source code to confidential negotiating positions of energy companies.” [Source: Washington Post]

It was also reported that officials from national security agencies and the Treasury Department are eager to push ahead with sanctions against China. These sanctions would be the first use of Obama’s executive order last April, which established the “authority to freeze financial and property assets of, and bar commercial transactions with, individuals and entities overseas who engage in destructive attacks or commercial espionage in cyberspace.”

If the sanctions were issued prior to Xi’s state visit, that would put the U.S. in a strong negotiating position to force China to curb her hacking activities. With a 53%

surge in economic espionage cases in the past year, there is urgency to bring this issue up for discussion at the highest level of authority. And what would be a better time to do it than when Xi and Obama are meeting face to face on U.S. territory? One minute to midnight

With the U.S. waging an economic war against China and Russia at the same time, there is a great deal of anticipation what the outcome would be. In my opinion, the U.S. is ahead but Russia and China are getting bolder and more aggressive. And this can be attributed to America’s ability to deal with any situation in a manner that serves the greater good. Russia and China on the other hand have authoritarian regimes and ruled by dictators. And as history tells us, dictators stay in power by repressing the free will of the people. Their survival is guaranteed only if their economy is robust. And to keep them entrenched in power, they rely on a corrupt bureaucracy and, more importantly, a corrupt military. But when their economy begins to falter, watch out because they won’t be around too long. Unlike America, they don’t have rule of law. They have rule of the jungle; it’s survival of the meanest.

It did not then come as a surprise when rumors started to circulate that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping’s days might be numbered. Well, it may be too soon to predict their departure from power, but unless they can turn their country’s economy around, the sword of Damocles would always be hanging over their heads… ready to strike them down.

With so many conflicts happening in the world right now, there are talks that the Doomsday Clock is just a minute away to midnight; that is, World War III. Wrong! We’re now in the middle of World War III -- an economic war -- and it’s rocking the world.

Actress/television host and singer Nadine Lustre is nominated under

the category of Best Southeast Asia Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2015 as recently announced through the Facebook account of MTV Asia.

Nadine was one of the wildcard nominees and was up against Asian artists likeAfgan of Indonesia, Thaitanium of Thailand, Gentle Bones of Singapore and Akim & The Majistret of Malaysia. Her onscreen partner James Reid was also nominated. 2 Filipinos receive awards from Japan

Two Filipinos receive the prestigious Foreign Minister’s Commendations

for 2015 by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for their outstanding contributions in promoting mutual understanding and goodwill between Japan and the Philippines.

Awards will be given posthumously to the late Prof. Sylvano Dong- E Mahiwo and to Gerard Sanvictores of Sycip Gorres Velayo & Co.

The award was presented by Japanese Ambassador to manila, Kazuhide Ishikawa in a conferment ceremony held at the ambassador’s official residence in Forbes Park Makati yesterday.

Professor Mahino was a professor at the Asian Center of the University of the Philippines, Diliman prior to his death last July 20 at the age of 64.

He taught various graduate levels courses including Japanese Foreign Policy throughout his

academic career at Asian Center.The Ifugao native took part

in various initiatives strengthening Philippine-Japan relations.

Meanwhile, Gerard Sanvictores, is a certified public accountant who joined Sycip Gorres Velayo & Co. in 1978. In 1981, he was endorsed to SGV Tsuda Ltd. where he assisted in the promotion of Japanese overseas direct investment to the Philippines and other Southeast Asian Countries.

MLTR to perform anew for Filipino fans

Multi-awarded pop and soft rock band Michael Learns To Rock, a.k.a.

MTLR will be back in Manila after seven years. Now they get another chance to sing along with their Pinoy fans during their one-night concert on September 19 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

This will be the fourth time that MLTR will perform live for

their Filipino fans whom the band considers the best singers in the world. They added that they feel wonderful to be able to travel to the Philippines and get on stage in front of a huge audience.

Named after the King of Pop Michael Jackson, the Danish trio composed of Jascha Richter (vocals, keyboards), Mikkel Lentz (guitar) and Kåre Wanscher

(drums) will be playing their hit songs “25 Minutes,” “Sleeping Child,” and “The Actor,” among many others. Currently the group is busy recording new songs with their first new original single slated for release on the first of November, with new releases coming in every four months in 2016.

FBA Winnipeg entered the 11th annual intercity FBANA tournament hosted by PBA Chicago with 11 teams ranging from the Tykes to Masters division. Over the Labour Day weekend there were over 100 teams from 12 North American cities competing for gold and bragging rights.

Winnipegs Tykes 11U team coached by Mike Lisan won their division by beating Toronto in the semis 37-29 to face Mississauga in the finals and winning the Tykes championship 62-53.

In the Midget Girls 17U division coached by Arsenio dela Cruz and Eldrin Geli, the team won their 4th consecutive FBA title by beating Chicago in the semis 46-23 and Mississauga in the finals 51-33.

This mixed group of girls ranging from 14-17 years old (born 1998-2000) have been together for the past 4 summers training 4-5 times a week throughout summer

break in preparation for the annual FBA-NA September Labour Day long weekend basketball tournament. Their dedication to the program and to one another is one of the keys to their successes and

The Souris Swinging Bridge, Canada`s longest footbridge

If you are looking for a great way to escape from hustle and bustle of the city take a day

trip and hit the road to Souris, a small quiet town in southwestern Manitoba.

Souris is home to Canada`s longest historic suspension (cable-stayed) footbridge, known as the `Swinging Bridge``. Actually, a single person can swing the bridge which has a capacity load of 1,000 persons or approximately 74,843 kg. (165,000 lbs.) equivalent to 925 white-tailed deers. Measuring 184 meters long (604 ft.) the bridge spans the Souris River that divides the town of 1,837 residents.

The original bridge, still partly existing, was built in 1904 by Squire William Henry Sowden, a pioneer resident-merchant and land developer from Millbrook, Ontario, as a convenient way to provide him access to his farmland on the east side of the river and to take his livestock over the river to pasture. Ever since he donated the bridge to the town in 1907 it has evolved over the years to become the famous landmark of the community.

The bridge has a historical resilience of overcoming the destruction due to natural calamities. In 1912 flood waters destroyed the bridge sweeping away the decking. In 1961 it was destroyed by a cable break and rebuilt in 1977 after being wiped away in the flood of 1976. And it was again damaged in the flood of 2011. In the summer of 2013 the bridge was rebuilt, higher than the previous one, with a price tag of $4.5 million. Supported by four high-strength steel suspension cables the bridge is expected to

last for the next hundred years.In 2013 the Government of

Manitoba Department of Culture, Heritage and Tourism granted the bridge the ``Star Attraction Status``. Also the Canada Post commemorated the bridge with a special stamp.

Although a very small town Souris boasts three museums that preserve its historical heritage, namely; the Plum Museum with many displays and interpretations of early history of southern Manitoba; the Hillcreast Museum containing the artifacts

of different eras of the town`s history and a collection of over 5,000 butterflies from around the world; and the Souris Railway Museum housed in an old CPR caboose containing some rare artifacts, memorabilias and records.

While in Souris spend some time in Victoria Park with its swimming pool, walking trails, beautiful campground, and a bird sanctuary known for its flock of peacocks.

And of course, don`t forget the most important must-do activity in Souris: experience the sensation of walking over the Swinging Bridge from one end to the other as what my family (Lita, Marie, Jer, Cassy and Cole) did.

How to get there: Take the Trans-Canada Highway 1 west just past Brandon and turn left to provincial road 250 to Souris. From Winnipeg you`ll be there in about two and a half hours.

ANCOP Walk 2015The dubious stormy weather

that Saturday morning of August 22, 2015 did not

stop the faithful ANCOP Walk Winnipeg participants from going to Assiniboine Park for the ANCOP Walk 2015 event. Despite the early morning rains, the event coordinators continued to install directional signage for the 5 km walk. The day’s weather forecast was unpromising so the ANCOP Walk team decided to start early with the activities.

The program, emceed by Kyle and Leizl, kicked-off with an invigorating Zumba dance exercise led by the energetic Boyet Nicolas and Myrna Evaristo. It was followed by the singing of the Canadian and Philippine Anthems , sung by Justony Vasquez and Bea Balagtas respectively. The opening prayer led by Josef Eleazar preceded the opening remarks of Eli Minglana, the Area ANCOP coordinator for Winnipeg, who informed everyone that ANCOP Walk events are happening in different cities across Canada during the month of August and closing remarks by Ador Cabrera, the CFC Area Head of Manitoba.

In the course of the program, Larry Vickar of VICKAR Auto Group gave a short talk, mentioning that during the CFC National Conference held in Winnipeg last July, he and his wife

Tova Vickar handed over a check of $ 25,000.00 as donation from the Jewish Manitoba Foundation for the ANCOP Children Sponsorship Program. Dr. Tom Colina of Pearl and Ellice Dental Groups also gave an informative talk about free medical and dental missions they plan to conduct in the Philippines.

Vickar Auto Group, Pearl and Ellice Dental Care, Scotiabank Winnipeg, thru the leadership of Janice Butler and Michael Cordova organized silent auctions for the ANCOP Walk fundraising program. C &K Music provided AW printouts / posters before the event, Saladmaster provided a light breakfast for walk participants. Other sponsors included SPC Cleaning and Commercial Services, Myrna’s Café and Restaurants and the CN Railroaders advocated by Andhoi Arevalo. Greg Malveda oversaw the sound system, while Steve from Vickar Auto supervised the backup stage. Also in a special way, thank you to different religious group and organizations and the members of Couples for Christ Ministries ( CFC, HOLD, SOLD, CFC Youth, and KFC)
