The candidates and their supporters utilized the power of social media - emails and face books. Apart from the allegations of cheating and rampant vote buying which were expected, the election for presidency seemed to be a battle on who has many titles and associations’ affiliations rather than on his or her accomplishments that benefitted the community. Julie Parado, a staunch supporter of the Samahang Makabayan, started the campaign a few days before the election by sending an email to about 100 people listing all of the titles of Aberin. Tabamo did the same – he sent an email with his own titles. Joseph Gonzales, the Malaya Team candidate for secretary, did not waste time refuting Parado’s claim that Aberin’s fundraisings were the biggest. On the other hand, in the advance voting on Aug. 2, Sunday, Tabamo said that the Comelec Rules and Regulations’ posted at the center’s bulletin board, stated that the election time stated was from 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m. The Malaya Team foster carried the same information but the Samahang Makakbayan Team showed a document showing that the advance voting time was from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. As a result of the confusion, many supporters of the Malaya Team who arrived after 5:00 p.m. were unable to vote. When the discrepancy was brought to the attention of Nida Quirapas, FAMAS president, she said, “Sinabi ko na sa Comelec iyan pero hindi ko alam kung ano ang ginawa.” That prompted some FAMAS members to ask, “Whose rules should be followed – the Executive Board, the Comelec or the candidates?” Bert Abiera, a former FAMAS president and one of the persons in charge of accepting registrations at the center during the weekdays, explained that it’s the Executive Board’s Rules and Regulation that should be followed. If you have been a victim ofthis crime, do you have any recourseto file a claim against the SAAQ? It alldepends on whether you have metthe eligibility criteria as follows:

“Should your vehicle or other propertybe damaged in a collision with a motorvehicle and the identity of the driver orowner of the vehicle that caused theaccident is not known, you can submita claim with the SAAQ forcompensation of property damagewhen these conditions are met:the accident occurred in Québec;you are a Québec resident;you are the owner of the vehicledamaged;you are the owner of the propertydamaged (ex.: a fence);you were not wholly at fault for theaccident;your insurance policy does not cover ahit-and-run collision;you reported the accident to the policewithin 48 hours after the event;you submitted a claim to the SAAQ nolater than 60 days after the accident;you had no repair work done on yourvehicle or property before the SAAQ'sadjuster estimated the damage.”

Even thou you are a victim of ahit and run, with serious bodilyinjuries, and you do not meet theeligibility of being a permanentresident in Quebec, you cannot claimfor any compensation.

Such is the case of MailaneBituin who was a victim of a hit and rundriver last June 25, 2015 on FleetRoad. She could not claim for

compensation because she needed tosubmit a permanent resident cardwhich she had not yet received at thetime of the accident..

Hit and run is a crime. But aguilty driver is not alwaysapprehendedt because bystandersusually do not have the presence ofmind to get the license plate of a carfleeing the scene. In spite of so manycars and by standers, nobodyreported the incident to the police. Some people simply told Mailane thatit was a green van but did not knowany other detail to identify the driver.Mailane did not receive any call fromthe police nor any request for moreinformation after the accident.. Themajor media such as Global News,CBC and CTV interviewed Mailanesuccessively in one week and askedher to let them know if there is anynews from the police. So far, twomonths have passed and Mailane hasnot heard anything yet from the police.

We are not aware of the exactnumber of hit and run accidents butknowing about a serious accident likethe one that happened to someone weknow sparks our interest to find outwhat can be done to seek justice forvictims like Mailane. We wish that ourauthorities would pay more attentionto catch these reckless drivers whorun away from their responsibilities. But then, the police may not have anylead at all if witnesses to an accidentdo not get the crucial information toidentify the hit and run driver.

I WAS RECENTLY ASKED BY ACOLLEGE CLASSMATE IF, IN OURREMAINING LIFETIME, WE WOULDEVER SEE THE CHANGE WE HAVEBEEN WANTING FOR OUR COUNTRY.IT WAS NOT A RHETORICALQUESTION, NOR A FLIPPANT ONE.THE INQUIRY CAME FROM ALAWYER OF MORE THAN FORTYYEARS, A MAN WHO HAD EVEN HADA STINT IN PUBLIC OFFICE, AND aperson who continues to struggle to beone with his faith.

Actually, it was not the first time he hadposed that question to me, except thistime, there were others joining theconversation. And I believe he askedme because I had often taken adifferent view, a different approach, tocommon problems.

Of course, I answered the only answerI know. I said, “Yes, if you are seeingwhat I am seeing.”

It was, then, a matter of describingwhat I was seeing, and my inevitablepointing to the younger generations, our own children and grandchildren.Because we know, that more than justa general rule, that our own young aredisplaying incontrovertible evidencethat they are a better version of us.

The serious frustrations that we carry, those of us who are beyond our forties, are the ills of our society. We areespecially chagrinned when we thinkof corruption, although I wonder why. After all, we who graduated from thepremier schools of the land werescions of those who ran Philippinesociety, including the politics of it. Andwe then had at least forty years of

being a crucial part of that ruling class– even if we chose not to be reallyaware of it. It is simply that from amacro point of view, we belonged tothe upper 10% of Philippine society, dominating the perspective anddecisions over the various fields ofgovernance, economics, education, and even religion.

And the ironic, even sad, part of it isthat we are deeply agitated withcorruption while only mildly concernedabout poverty. Truly sad because ourscale of historical and present poverty, and its continuance, is one factor thatwill deny any anti-corruption advocacyany sustainable success.

So, we are faced with almost comicrealities that result, not in laughter, butfrustrations at the upper level ofsociety, and actual suffering for themajority poor. We want to addresscorruption but miss the truth of ourown participation in it, by commissionand omission. I think most of us did notrealize we were elitist because welooked only to the 1% who control somuch of Philippine life, andundervaluing the fact that as part of theupper 10%, we have been elite as well.

Let me touch a little on corruption. While there is no one definition ofcorruption, in philosophical and moraldiscussions, it usually refers to as “theabuse of bestowed power or positionto acquire a personal benefit.”Whatever variety of nuances there maybe in legal terms, the nature ofcorruption is essentially this.

Is elitism bestowed? If elitism isinherited, or caused by inheritance

dynamics not far from how dynastiesare formed, then it is safe to assumethat wealth and power have beenpassed on that way, at least in thePhilippines, and at least for a fewgenerations. As history and reality hasit, though, our so-called dynasties arequite short-lived, which makes themoxymorons.

In our land, wealth and power arepassed on the dynasty manner fromancestors who managed to pass ontheir accumulated wealth and power tothe next generation. In this respect, much of present-day elitism has beenbestowed. If we miss this veryfundamental reality, we will never seecorruption or its roots with clarity – andcannot dismantle it effectively.

Politically, however, corruption is theabuse of bestowed position forpersonal gain. These positions arebasically bestowed two ways, 1) byelection, and 2) by appointment of theelected. Most talk of corruption hasbeen narrowed to these two categoriesof bestowed power. Most anti-corruption advocates, especially themost noisy, choose to narrow theirdefinition of corruption to thesecategories.

Yet, the fact of bribery has beenattached to this narrow definition asmuch as the philosophical and moralhave been largely eased out (difficultas they are to measure). Bribery is asintegral to corruption the way it isdefined and measured today, especially by internationaltransparency groups. When weunderstand this relationship betweenthe briber and the bribed, our view of

corruption must radically change. So,too, will our approach to dismantle it –if we have the stomach to also goagainst those who have the power tobribe.

Lambasting politicians seems to be theeasier route as they are really made-to-order punching bags. They are theones up front, they are the ones wecan identify and who, at least duringelections, openly need our votes. Butthe puppeteers are not so visible, theventriloquist not so obvious as themanipulated.

So, the greater powers-that-are, thosewho prospered all these decades ofwhat we say are corrupt environmentsand politicians, they are never thefocus of our resentment, our attacks. After all, how many of us have eatenout of the largesse of the only sourceof humoungous wealth that can buypoliticians? But if don’t see thekingmakers, we will never understandwhat they do.

That’s why I see only the youngergenerations. I see the nobility asdesigned by life itself still so alive inthem. I see their predisposition to bemore egalitaria

reported any news to Mailane. Sevendays after the accident, she called thetelephone number on the card given toher by the police. She was told thatthere was no report about her accident. She was directed to call City Hall butshe was unable to find out anything. Finally, the CTV news reportermanaged to find out about the missingdigit in the incident card given to her bythe police who came to the scene ofthe accident. The first reporter thatinterviewed her was the Global News, followed by CTV and CBC a few daysafter the accident.

According to Mailane, therewere many cars that stopped on bothsides of the road to look at whathappened but no one had given anyidentification of the hit and run driver.Unable to breath, she was in great painand was brought to St. Mary’s Hospitalby an ambulance that was summonedby someone she did not know.

Mailane arrived in Canada in2007 from Israel where she worked forsix years. She thought her life wouldbe better but then she was released byher first employer and had to findanother one. It took ten months beforeshe could get her papers processed forthe new employer. This delay inprocessing papers is the reason mostcaregivers put up with any abuse of anemployer. In spite of some problems,Mailane accepted her fate and workedhard to support her family back home.

On the day of the accident,

Mailane was on her way to send moneyto her family. This accident caused hernot only a lot of pain but also financialproblems as she was unable to receiveany compensation. SAAQ (Societed’assurance d’automobile du Quebec)does not give any coverage without apermanent resident card. Mailane hasnot yet received this card and she hasto wait before she can claim anything.

Due to lack of benefits from thesystem, she is living on her friends’

generosity - they bring her food, lendher money to pay for her rent, andother needs. But she is unable to sendsupport to her children who are stillstudying. She told them to stop goingto school as she cannot afford to sendthem anything.

The Cuisine de ManilleRestaurant is helping her by giving herwhatever money is raised from tips anddonations of customers. She alsodecided to use a website called “GoFundme - a Penny for Mylyn”. Thelatest update shows $923 raised by 16people. Her goal is to raise $4,000 topay for her children’s plane tickets.

MMTV interviewed her to bringattention to her sad plight - unable towork, and slowly recovering from her

accident - she is in great need of help.It is also to seek out the witnesses tothis hit and run accident. Perhaps, someone among the crowd who sawthe driver may have some clues as tohis identity.

We went back to the scene of

the accident with Mailane. She pointedto the exact spot where the hit and rundriver struck her by the passenger sideof his vehicle. She felt like she wastwisted so violently that she fell on thepavement. She said that a Filipinowoman looked at her and asked if shewas okay. Then she saw a nurse and adoctor who helped in moving her to thegrassy side of the road as she waslying on a hot pavement. When theambulance came, these three peopletogether with two bikers disappeared. She found out later that a Filipinoyoung woman died on the same spotsometime ago.

As we stood at the side of theroad where the cross walk is located,we observed that drivers speed by anddo not slow down at all. The signindicates that drivers must stop forpedestrians and failure to do so willmean a penalty of $100 but there is noguaranty they will stop. The driver thathit Mailane was impatient and by passed all the stopped cars to go tothe empty lane where Mailane wasabout to cross.

The safety of pedestrians mustbe secured and we plan to ask the Cityof Hampstead to review the statistics ofaccident on this crosswalk on FleetRoad. Perhaps, a traffic light is neededto protect anyone crossing this street.

If anyone wants to helpMailane, please go to the website ofGofundme.com -http://www.gofundme.com/6t23phqc

From Page 1 Hit and Run

Mailane Bituin (on the right, still with a cast on her left leg) points to the exactplace of the hit and run accident on Fleet Road.

“The Comelec’s power starts once theExecutive Board has approved andsigned the Rules and Regulationssubmitted by the former,” he said.Another reason why Abiera insistedthat the closing time should be 6:00p.m. was to accommodate thecaregivers and workers who told himthat they finished only at 5:00 p.m.

A rumour circulated that thenight before the election on Sunday,August 9, someone brought about 200processed registration forms to thecenter. Could these registration formsbelonged to the would-be voters whocould not meet the deadline of 2:00p.m. for registration the following day?And why was the deadline forregistration at 2:00 p.m. not properlydisseminated. Was it a last-minutedecision by the Executive Board or theComelec. In the wake of thisconfusion, many missed the deadline.

Another controversy was whenFred Magallanes, who just lost thelibel suit filed against him by BudzSarmiento, reported a news thataccording to the supporters of Tabamoteam was untrue, biased and unfair.Magallanes wrote that Mr. Tabamo’schances of leading Malaya to electionvictory was written off by himself.According to Magallanes, two monthsbefore the election, Tabamo said, “I’veno chance of becoming FAMASpresident. I don’t think I got a chance.Cora could win the August FAMASelection.”

Some of the irregularities are:

One community leader was goingaround telling people in the park aboutthe ballots bearing numbers at thebottom and at the top. One watchernoticed that the corresponding stubsof some of the ballots were missing. Awatcher noticed that Carbon’s namewas being called instead of Sia-Umipig.

Some of the observations frommany voters: “ We did not even see orhear the candidates talk because theywere not introduced. They did not havea chance to talk and convince us whythey deserve our votes. I am sure therewas enough time to introduce them.Somebody told me that the candidateswere introduced during the Pista saNayon but many voters were not there. Will the voters base their decision onwho to vote in the candidates’pictures?” The Comelec was givenmoney to buy uniforms but why did itchoose yellow (the same color as theSamahang Makabayan )? Why was thevolunteer reading the scores justsaying “block” (straight voting insteadof reading the individual’s name andscore?). There were cross voting.”

One old lady, who was voting forthe first time but was unable to registerbecause she arrived past 2:00 p.m. , toldBert, Dante and me , “This election is verydisorganized. There was not even a signwhere to go to vote.”

The official list by the Comelec isshown at the end of this article. As canbe gleaned from this list, only onemembeer of the Malaya team won.

Rick Aquino, who immigratedto Canada when he was still young in1971 , originally aspired to be apoliceman but he did not pursue hisdream because he failed to meet theheight requirement. Instead, he tookPsychology at John Abbott Collegein the 80s. It’s a decision he didn’tregret. One of the required courseshe took to pass the course wasvolunteering at the Veterans Hospitalat Sainte Anne de Bellevue.

Depending on his hecticschedules, Aquino has beenvolunteering at the hospital two tothree times a week for about sevenyears. “I stroll with the elderly, talk tothem and listen to their stories,” saidAquino. “ They tell me their strugglesand interesting experiences in life. Iwish more youth will be spendingtime with them. They feel lonely, abandoned. They’re isolated. Thethings I learned from them stuck inmy mind.”

Apart from his volunteer job

at the veterans hospital, Aquino hasbeen serving as president of thePhilippine Basketball Association ofMontreal for about four years. Hestarted as a player, then coachbefore joining the management teamof the association. He wants tocontinue the traditions that theassociation has started.

Aquino explained that manyof the kids who come from thePhilippines are insecure. “One of myjobs is to develop the self-confidenceof the youth,” he said. “I tell them thatthey can compete in any level. Theyare as good as anybody else.Another project of mine is to look forfinancial funding to create programsthat will eventually help defray theeducation of the kids. Something likescholarship. “

His volunteerism does notend in helping the veterans and thekids. He also wants to establish asupport system for the upcomingFilipino business men, especially the

youth. “Filipino businesses orassociations fail because there’s somuch jealousy and gossips. Let’sdiscard ill feelings.”

“Many g Filipinos are fightingfor titles, power and money” Aquinoadded.” And there’s too muchnegativity. For example, manyFilipinos criticize first before doingbusiness with you. “

Aquino admitted that heheard about the incident at 6767Cote de Neiges when the businesspeople from the Philippines visitedMontreal. “Can’t the Filipinos setaside their differences just for a day?The key to success in life, whether inbusiness, family or relationship, iscommunication. We have to tell ourbusiness associates, friends andloved ones what we have in mind.We have to communicate.Communication is lacking in ourcommunity. But we have to avoidassumption. When we assign some atask, we shouldn’t assume that hehas accomplished it. We have tofollow up to avoidmiscommunication. “

Sinabi raw ni Dante, “I’ve nochance becoming FAMAS president . Idon`t think I got a chance. Cora wouldwin the election in August. ``Itinanong sana ni Dante kay Fred kungnaka-tape iyon nang mag-usap sila.

Ang ginawa ni Fred kay Danteay parang ginawa ng una kay Budz.Natalo si Fred sa demanda sa kaniya niBudz. Isinulat ni Fred na nagnakaw nggarbage bag at natanggal sa trabahosi Budz dahil sa sexual harassmentkahit wala siyang maipakitangkatibayan. Hindi na natuto si Fred.

Minsan, mahirap magtiwala saisang tao.

Magsisimba o magtratrabahoo may pupuntahan pang party.

Kahit

ako, gagawin ko iyon. Wala siyangnilabag na rules and regulations. Mayilang loopholes and Rules andRegulations ng FAMAS na kailanganma-review. Siguro, nagtatawa si BudzSarmiento. Tahimik ngayon dahilwalang nagrereklamo.

Bert Abiera – Kahit 80 years old nasiya, ipinakikita niya pa rin angkaniyang pagka-makabayan. Angproyekto niya ngayon ay magkaroonng lamp posts at flag poles sa harapng busto ni Rizal. Nagaalab pa rin angpangarap ni Bert na magkaroon ngRizal Cultural Center.Marlou Agcaoli – Sa pagigingchampion ng Chess Club noongnakaraang Tri-city na dinaluhan ngmga Pilipino mula sa Montreal,Kingston at Ontario. Si Marlou andkinatawan ng Montreal sa chesstournament. Mercy Sia-Umipig – Presidente ngFilipino-Canadian Volley BallAssociation of Montreal. Si SherrieGarcia ang sports coordinator. Angmga nanalo ay ang mga sumusunod:MVP (man) - Raymond Cruz , MVP(woman) Celia del Campo . Sa softball, first place ang FCAWI at secondrunner up ang Montreal . . Danny Florentino – Membershipdirector siya ng FAMAS 2013-2015.Nakapanghihinayang dahil hindi nasiya tumakbong direktor ngayongeleksyon. Isa siya sa mga nakita kongtalagang nagtrabaho sa FAMASnoong panunungkulan niya.

EMAIL NI BERT ABIERA “the Godfather”SA ENGLISH (ISINALIN SA A TAGALOG)PARA IPAALAM SA KOMUNIDAD

Last July 25, 2015, one musthave been wondering why the HolidayInn’s Diamond Hall was teeming withpeople dressed to the nines. Ladiescame in their formals ‘with a touch ofred’ as requested. That night – redwas the symbol of success, happiness, and longevity all rolled into one! It wasthe 88th birthday celebration of one ofthe Filipino Community’s finest, Mrs.Natalie Olarte Pelausa. As the ladyguests filled in, some came in all red,all white, or in flowered prints. I noticedMs. Julie Parado in a beautiful all redformal, Mrs. Cesa Gladysz in an all-white Philippine cocktail; and Mrs.Adoree Darwood in a multifloweredcocktail formal. Everyone armedthemselves with sweet smiles andgracious hellos, saying to each other, “Long time no see; you look great; youhave not changed; we should gettogether . . . etc.”

The party opened up with asoul tugging opening prayer by Mr.Butch Aracena. This was followed bythe “Rose and Candle” ceremonywhere Markus and Emily Grenierhanded a birthday bouquet to thecelebrant. Mrs. Budz and Mr. FreddieHedriana lit the birthday cake. Thisceremony was done while the song,”You Light Up My Life” was beingplayed by Dennis Mayuga, the DJ ofthe evening.

Mrs. Cynthia Puray Pacheco, the evening’s emcee, kept the guestspretty occupied. The program startedwith Ms. Louise Umictin singing a solo. She was accompanied by the guitaristMr. Joshua Umictin. As the crowdconsisted mostly of Natalie’scontemporaries, guests were invited togive a short tribute to her. This was ledby a professionally coifed Mrs. IpangNicolas.

There would be somethingsorely remiss if we didn’t have the hardrock baritone voice of Mr. FreddieEspinosa who sang his signature song,‘Love Story.’ He did it so beautifullyand earned himself an encore.

After a lot of dancing, thecelebrant gave her ‘Thank You’, amessage that made everyone misty-eyed, especially when she mentionedthat her beloved husband, the late Dr.Jesus Pelausa, was happily lookingback at us. On July 18, there was another birthdaycelebration at St. Michael’s Church inthe West Island. It was a surprise tothe Living Waters International’s PastorRene Saquing! Pastor Rene thought itwas somebody else’s party, so whenhe was invited to enter the hall, he wassurprised to see his bigger-than-lifepicture poster on a giant-sized canvassmiling back at us! Messages fromfriends and family (some from out of

town) indicate how high in esteem thePastor is held. He is seen as anexample of how a Christian walks inlife. He has encouraged many to lookto Christ as the abiding light by whichto live, always stressing that there is noother name under heaven, except bythe name of Jesus, by which we can besaved. A few interesting details likewhat is his favorite drink (buko) andhow many languages does he speak(four, including Japanese!) revealed alittle bit more about the Pastor! And asusual, there was food galore as thecongregation showed off their culinaryprowess. You can be sure that anycelebration at the Living Waters isalways satisfying to one’s belly. And toeveryone’s delight, there’s alwaysenough to bring home! It was analtogether pleasant evening and to all,it was no surprise to see a life of 60years spent in utter dedication to JesusChrist, to proclaim how His Death andResurrection has changed the worldand saved it from the deadlyconsequences of sin. If you haven’tyet met Pastor Rene, you can be surethat he will continue to press on so thatthe whole world will know about hisREDEEMER, SAVIOUR, and FRIEND.Yours truly, whose life he has touchedimmensely, wants to greet him aheartfelt HAPPY BIRTHDAY PASTORRENE !!!

Another July celebrant is Mrs.Cesa Gladysz of Dorval. In a delightfultwist, it was the celebrated whosurprised us to an ample meal atBarbie’s in Dorval! We, her dedicatedfriends Hans, Adoree, John, Lilia,Ciony, Emma, Cely, and sister Mariette, were the privileged guests. And asfriends often do, we spoke much aboutour past and present adventures. Theevening was continued at her house, where a lot more desert waited !

And I would like to welcomeCharito Bamba, Mar and PuringBamba’s niece who flew all the wayfrom Japan (where she resides with herhusband) to experience the Canadianculture. She is here on a 6-monthvacation,

Last but not least is aBELATED HAPPY BIRTHDAY to a goodfriend Maria Kwersteimer. Mywholehearted good wishes goes out toher. She blesses us with her calmingpresence as well as her sumptuousgourmet meals (everythinghomemade!). A gracious hostess, shealways makes you feel at home. Thankyou always, Maria! May there be manymore blessings to you.

My sister is getting marriedin September, and I see her goingaround making sure that each detailis perfect. Yes, perfect. It is her bigday after all, so the fuss she makesabout every little nuance isunderstandable.

Weddings are so difficult toplan as there are so many things toconsider such as the weddinginvitations, the venue for theceremony and the reception, thephotographers, videographer, florists, the band, and of course, thewedding gown. With so manydecisions to make, the help of amake-up artist can make a bridelook like a million bucks rather thanlooking worn-out. And so I askedcelebrity designer and award-winning hair and make-up artistDennis Santos for his opinion andadvice for brides.

All brides want to be beautiful. What makes a bride beautiful? A happy disposition in life makes abride more beautiful. Finding yourinner and outer beauty and having apositive outlook in life works like afountain of youth that brings youthfulradiance or glow.

What should brides look for in amakeup artist specifically? What a bride should look for is amake-up artist with a sense ofbuilding a work relationship basedon trust, a bond of trust.

Is it important to choose a bridalmake-up artist well in advance anddo a trial make-up? Yes. Choosing a make-up artist islike finding a diamond in the rough -

one who can provide your everyneed with their professional ideas.

What would you tell a bride who isnot sure what she wants for hermake-up?One's trust is unsurpassed, unlessproven. There is no harm in tellingthe bride, in all honesty andmodesty aside, that she is in goodhands.

What are the latest wedding trendsfor bridal makeup? I have been eager to be asked bythat question. For me it is not thetrend or the "in thing" when it comesto wedding make-up. It is aboutone's INDIVIDUALITY, which is farmore important when doing one'smake-up. Everyone is different fromthe other. So I make it a point that anindividual’s character shine when Ido make-up.

How should a bride prepare herskin prior to her wedding day? A. Hydrate more (drink lots of wateror juices) B. Detoxify/cleanse yoursystem C. Pamper yourself with lotsof relaxation and good vibes

How do you stop the make upfrom running or making it staylooking great throughout theceremony? Putting the best make-up doesn’tguarantee that the make-up will notrun or will stay longer as expected. What I suggest to a bride is tomaintain her composure throughoutthe ceremony. Breathe in more air, stay focus, and absorb all the goodthings that are happening on herspecial day.

What’s your advice for brides whowant to do their own weddingmake-up? Avoid the guilt trip. Don’t be a miser.Wedding is a once-in-a-lifetimeexperience. Indulge!

What are your top 3 beauty tips forbrides?A. Have the aura of happiness andpositivity b. Get lots of beauty restand body pampering c. Have aperfect and best day ever to bondand be beautiful with your family.

Ask theVideo Guy

Technological Tidbitsby

Al Abdon

Children and grandchildrenmay be the most common of all familyvideo subjects. I for one have beenvideo tapping my first born child andhave never stop recording until nowwith my grand children. This can betrying for viewers of your programsbecause the only topics lessinteresting than other people's pets areother people's kids. The fact thatvideos themselves are often boring isone reason.

How do you satisfy them? Byremembering that you aren't simplydocumenting your children. Instead, you're creating programs about them, using the same techniques that you'dapply to any other video project. Thesetechniques are the topic of the day. We'll find good subjects to capture andstrategies for taping them. Then we'lldiscuss some easy techniques fordirecting the shoot and editing thefootage. To keep the subject matter amanageable size, we'll assume that"children" means under the age of 12and that the video projects will result infamily keepsakes.

Again, the idea is to createprograms about your kids, instead ofjust recording footage of them. Followthese quick and simple recipes andyour viewers will stun you by beggingfor more.

Holidays, Outings and Vacations Children are more natural (and

interesting) when they're too involvedin some event to stand and stare at thecamera. Holidays are obviouscandidates. Birthdays, Thanksgiving,Christmas, Valentine's Day these aretimes when you have the camcorder oryour iPhone out anyway, ready tocapture any action that presents itself. But instead of just grabbing footage, think of child-centered holiday topics. IfSis and Junior make their ownValentine crafts, document theprocess, and then follow them aroundwhen they present them to loved ones.If appropriate, assign a child aThanksgiving side dish or dessert andthen tape them as they cook andproudly serve it. For Christmasfestivities, forget the usual presentopening and tape the childrenwrapping gifts instead - a process thatcan engage their natural ingenuity. While they're working, you mightinterview them about who each gift isfor and what the gift is (after all, thevideo won't be shown until the gifts areno longer a secret).

Family outings and vacations

especially a trip to the Philippines areother classic video venues. Here too, invent video-friendly things for kids todo. For instance, after a motor trip, youmight tape a child explaining the routeand following it on a map shown ininsert shots. When you edit, you canuse excerpts to carry viewers from onelocale to the next. Or, at a scenicoverlook, have a child read the pointsof interest off the inevitable displaycard at the site. Don't forget to get well-composed shots of the viewsmentioned. In editing, you can seguefrom a live shot of the child at thedisplay to the scenic views, but with thechild's description continuing on thesound track. We could list moreexamples, but the concept is plain;when practical, make childrencontributors to the program as well assubjects of it.

Sports and Stage Activities The next biggest subject

group is activities, particularlyperformances and sports. Coveringyoung Winnie’s soccer game can yieldgreat material; and don't forget toinclude specially-shot footage of herball-handling with both feet and head. Here's a hint for easy recognition. Get abeauty shot of your child in uniform, with number prominent. By editing thisin ahead of the game action, you'llmake it easier for viewers to recognizeand follow your champion athlete inlong shots.

Performances are obviouscandidates for videos, whether schoolplays, concerts, or dance orinstrumental recitals. Most of theseevents keep you stuck in one seat inthe auditorium, so practice somestrategies for getting better angles ofyour young artist. If there are twoperformances, shoot both of them, reserving the second for close-ups ofyour child. Later, you can cut these intothe wide shot of the show, retaining theoriginal audio as the master soundtrack. You can frequently fake multiplecamera angles of instrumentalperformances by using video fromdifferent parts of the show and cuttingthem together as if it is oneperformance. Be careful when doingthis with singing, however, since lip-syncing is important.

If it's a solo gig, like a pianorecital, see if you can't get thosecloseups at a rehearsal or a secondperformance after the concert's overand the audience has gone. Closeupsof keyboards or moving violin bows

can then be cut in as needed. If you'regood enough to match the lighting, you can even shoot these close shotsat home or in a rehearsal hall but thatmuch work takes us beyond thesphere of home video hints.

Needless to say, capturingevents means having your gear ready.Your batteries should be charged andyour tapes should be opened, labeledand set to go.

Homegrown Programs You don't have to depend on

holidays, trips, games or performancesto create video opportunities. You cancreate your own programs anytime.Interviews, like the package-wrappingshow we've mentioned, are naturalswith children. Tape them while they talkabout a science project, a camping tripor any other topic that's on their mind. Instead of having kids sit for thecamera like adult interviewees, makesure they have something to do as theytalk. "Tell" is always easier as "show-and-tell." Demonstrating a scienceproject is an obvious activity, and stillphotos, which the subject shows to thecamera, can accompany trips. (Getfull-frame shots of these pictures later, that can be cut into the edited show.) Here's a project that's a bit more work, but the rewards are worth it: TheFamily News Desk. The idea is to makeyour child a newscaster delivering thesix o'clock report (for sending toschool, grandma or wherever).

The breakfast table in abrightly-lit kitchen makes a simplenews set (though you can have yourchildren create a more elaborateimitation of a real one). To prepare, help your young Peter Jennings jotdown some quick topic notes in orderand place the sheet on the table whereit's easily read. For fun, use a feltmarker to letter on cardboard "Goodevening! This is the MMTV News withJOVEY." Prop this beside the cameraas a cue card. Children love it whenyou mimic real production procedures, like counting 5-4-3-2-1 and throwing ahand cue to begin.

The possibilities are endless, but the idea is simple make videoprojects with your kids instead ofrelying on events to deliver subjects.

Directing and Editing You've noticed that we harp oncutaways, those lifesaving shots thatlet you scissor out the dull parts, thenconceal the edit by placing a cutawaybetween the remaining parts. Cutaways can be inserts, like details ofmaps, full shots of still pictures ordetails of the projects on display. Theycan also be true cutaways. That is,shots of other parts of the event, like an

interviewer's reactions or anotherfamily member in the scene. Finally, don't forget color shots wider views ofthe environment that give viewers abetter idea of the locale. Of course, color shots work a lot better at theAcme Alligator Farm than they do inyour kitchen newsroom. The next best advice for directing akiddie shoot is roll long takes -loooooooong takes. Kids can beunpredictable, and they can't beexpected to perform like little membersof the Screen Actors' Guild. So, keepthe camera rolling through mistakes, repetitions and just plain dull stuff, because you never know when apriceless moment will come along. Ifyou've done your work on cutaways, you'll be able to excerpt just thosewonderful passages and replace thelong, boring stretches with quickcutaways. While on the subject of shooting long, always roll tape as much as 10seconds before the action you want tocover, and keep on rolling another 10seconds after it ends. You never knowwhat you might want to use inassembling the show and with Mini DVtape prices dropping, your costs canbe as low as 10 cents a minute. Consider using stills to punctuate yourwork. Having a finger-paint project endwith a freeze-frame of a proud andhappy face makes a great wrap-up. Also, many DV camcorders can recordstill shots as well. Newer megapixelCCDs take excellent stills and savethem to a memory card. We're out of time before we've evenscratched the surface, but if we'vesparked your imagination in makingprograms with children, then we'vedone our job.

Good shooting!

Motorists who resorted toprayers after they were caught in agridlock in Santo Tomas, Batangas, last Sunday thanked the heavens aftera familiar face in the Catholic Church

hierarchy jumped out of his car andsingle-handedly untangled the jam.

Manila Archbishop EmeritusGaudencio Cardinal Rosales tookmatters into his own hands as he

traversed a typhoon-lashed highwayto help settle a traffic dispute.

“We were trapped for over anhour and we were rushing to anotherengagement. I said to myself: ‘Wecannot take this anymore,’” the retired83-year-old cardinal said on Tuesday. With no traffic policemen in sight amidthe onslaught of Typhoon Ineng(international name: Goni), Rosalessaid he zipped up his raincoat andwalked nearly a kilometer to find outwhat was causing the mile-long snarl, the likes of which have become a dailymisery for Filipinos.

“We’re all in a hurry,” he saidto the erring motorists, afterdiscovering six cars fighting over twolanes in Santo Tomas town.

As his boots filled up with rainwater, the hooded old man used handsignals to force the vehicles to backup, freeing up the jam.

The rain later let up to reveal agiant crucifix peeking out of his jacket. The chastened motorists then got outof their vehicles to kiss his ring.“They were very apologetic,” Rosales said of the culprits.About 80 percent of the Philippines’100 million population are RomanCatholic, who are considered amongthe world’s most devout.Last January, six million attendedPope Francis’ rain-soaked ManilaMass.

Traffic jams in the Philippinecapital of 12 million had worsened inrecent months, as the governmentrushed to build elevated tollways toaccommodate the growing number ofvehicles acquired amid a boomingeconomy.

Rosales, who is one of thefour cardinals in the country, said heendured his share of hours-long trafficjams during his eight-year term asarchbishop of Manila beginning in2003.

But for as long as thegridlocks are there, according to him,he would serve as a make-do trafficpoliceman given the chance.“Next time, I’ll be sure to bring awhistle,” Rosales said, laughing.

Philippine President BenignoAquino named Interior MinisterManuel Roxas on Friday as thecandidate he will support in the May 9,2016 presidential election.

The following are the leadingcontenders for the post:

MANUEL "MAR" ROXAS, 58A scion of the old, landed rich

from the central Philippines' sugar-baron country, US-educated Roxas isa grandson of the country's first postWorld War II president, who also hadthe same name.

Untainted by corruption, unlike many Filipino politicians, he is aclose friend of Aquino and is seen bymany as a safe pick to carry the torch

of the latter's reformist presidency.Despite marrying a celebrity

television presenter, the formerinvestment banker lags behind in thepolls and often comes across as bland

and boring. He lost the 2010 vicepresidential election to Jejomar Binay, one of his potential rivals in theupcoming election.

JEJOMAR "JOJO" BINAY, 72Though currently leading

polls, the feisty septuagenarian'spopularity has recently been dentedby allegations he illegally enrichedhimself and built a family dynastyduring his 20-year tenure as mayor of

Makati, Manila's financial district.Short and dark-skinned, Binay

has been described in jest as thePhilippines' Barack Obama, the firstblack US leader. In the 1980s the self-made orphan and trained lawyerrepresented the victims of humanrights abuses perpetrated during therule of late dictator Ferdinand Marcos.

A close ally of Aquino's latemother, the democracy icon CorazonAquino, Binay is relishing a potentialrematch with the incumbent'spreferred successor Roxas, whom hebeat in the 2010 vice presidential

election.MARY GRACE POE

LLAMANZARES, better known asGRACE POE, 46

The former Philippine filmcensor was Roxas' rival for Aquino'sendorsement, and toppled Binay fromthe top of the polls in June. US-basedfor over a decade until her return to the

Philippines in 2004, she is seen as arefreshing new face in a country wearyof corruption.

Dumped at a church as ababy and adopted by popular Filipinofilm action hero Fernando Poe, whodied shortly after losing the 2004presidential election, the younger Poewas a surprise top vote-getter in the2013 senatorial ballot.

She has yet to make her viewsknown on many major issues, andfoes brand her as inexperienced. Theyalso insist she has not lived in thecountry long enough to satisfy a 10-year residency rule for presidentialcandidates.

Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said hewill no longer seek reelection assenator in 2016.The son and namesake of the formerpresident in an interview with BomboRadyo on Monday night said he hasbeen consulting “friends” about hisplans to run for either President or VicePresident in next year’s nationalelections.Marcos, whose term expires next year,is allowed under the law to seekanother term in the Senate. He placed7th in the 2007 senatorial elections.“Of course, talks have been going on.We’re also talking with theNacionalista Party as well as otherpolitical parties and groups. But what Ican say now is we’re not talking aboutreelection. What we’re talking about isthe possibility of running for higheroffice and not for the Senate,” he saidin Filipino.Marcos’ statement was his reply whenasked on whether he will run for ahigher position and on what the realscore is about his election plan in2016.But he was still coy on what “higherposition” he was referring to, as hesaid he is still closely monitoring andanalyzing election-related politicaldevelopments leading to next year’spolls.“We still need to see the line-up, whowill be teaming up, who are allied withus and especially the parties involved

because you don’t stand a chance ifyou don’t have the machinery, a solidmachinery,” Marcos said. His pronouncements dispelledspeculations that he will be in thesenatorial slate of the reported tandemof Senators Grace Poe and Francis”Chiz” Escudero. The Poe-Escudero team is reportedlytrying to form a united senatorial ticketcomposed of candidates identifiedwith both the opposition and theadministration.Aside from Marcos, among thosefloated as possible senatorialcandidates are Leyte Rep. MartinRomualdez, Valenzuela City (MetroManila) Rep. Sherwin Gatchalian,Technical Education and SkillsDevelopment Authority (Tesda)Director General Joel Villanueva, boxing champion and Sarangani Rep.Manny Pacquiao and Sen. VicenteSotto 3rd.Escudero, however, denied theexistence of such line-up as well as thesupposed Poe-Escudero tandem, noting that they have not even decidedif they will run for higher positions nextyear.Poe, the pre-election frontrunner inboth presidential and vice presidentialsurveys, is being wooed by the LiberalParty to run in tandem with itsstandard-bearer, Interior SecretaryManuel Roxas 2nd.

RE COMES THE SON Sen. Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. addressesstudents attending a youth forum on the Bangsamoro Basic Law atthe University of Perpetual Help in Las Piñas City.

MALACAÑANG on Tuesdaydenied that fear of a political whplashwas the reason why governmentcaved in to an avalanche of criticismsfrom migrant Filipinos and theirfamilies back home who deplored anattempt by the Bureau of Customs(BOC) to subject balikbayan (care)boxes to tighter scrutiny.President Benigno Aquino 3rd late onMonday ordered Finance SecretaryCesar Purisima and CustomsCommissioner Alberto Lina to foregothe planned random inspection ofbalikbayan boxes and instead subjectthem to X-ray and K-9 (drug-sniffer)checks that drew flak from migrantFilipinos in the social media.Only suspicious balikbayan boxes thatmay contain prohibited items will beinspected under the supervision of theOverseas Workers WelfareAdministration (OWWA) or anoverseas Filipino worker (OFW)association.

“The President primarily tookinto consideration the welfare of eachOFW and their families as time hasmade the balikbayan box a symbol ofthe fruits of their labor and desire togive their families a more comfortablelife,” Communications SecretaryHerminio Coloma Jr. said in Filipino.“We received a lot of feedback fromthe ranks of the OFWs and weconsidered each one of them,” headded.

Coloma, however, insisted thatthe government is still duty-bound toprevent the smuggling of contrabandinto the country.

“While we listen to thesentiments of our bosses, it is also theduty of the state to stop those whotake advantage of the balikbayanprivileges by using the boxes insmuggling weapons, illegal drugs anddutiable goods,” he said.Lina on Tuesday said the BOC “willfollow the President’s directive onbalikbayan boxes effectiveimmediately.”“Instead of random physicalinspections, we will do a mandatory X-ray examination of containers ofconsolidated shipments andbalikbayan boxes at no cost to thesender or OFW,” he added.Lina, moreover, asked freightforwarders to install their own X-raymachines in their warehouses toexpedite the clearance of balikbayanboxes.

A coalition of OFW groups andadvocates welcomed the President’sdirectives.

“We thank President Aquinofor his timely intervention. We deem itunfortunate, however, that thebalikbayan box controversy had toreach the Palace doorstep for it to beresolved,” John Bertiz, the officialspokesman of the coalition, said.“It reflects poorly on the consultativemechanisms within governmentagencies, such as the Bureau ofCustoms [BOC]. Had they reached outto the OFW global community beforeabruptly undertaking random checks, this conflagration could have been

averted,” he added.Balikbayan box law

The controversy gave Sen.Ralph Recto the chance to drawattention to his pending proposal,Senate Bill 2913 or the Balikbayan BoxLaw, which seeks to increase the taxexemption limit on goods shippedthrough care boxes. He said the draftlaw would give “permanent protection”to OFWs.The bill proposes to increase the taxexemption value from the present$500 to $2,000. Recto said by raisingthe exemption limit, the “motive andthe temptation” to open boxes wouldbe eliminated.‘OFWs no criminals’

Vice President Jejomar Binayalso on Tuesday said the BOC shouldchange its wrong premise that OFWsare criminals who smuggle goodsthrough the balikbayan boxes theysend home.

“Huwag po nating siraan‘yong imahe ng ating mga OFW. ‘Yongpagbubukas ng kahon na ‘yon, angpinagmumulan noon ay ‘Nagi-smuggle kayo. Lumalabag kayo sabatas.’ Huwag naman [Let us notsmear the image of our OFWs. Theopening of balikbayan boxes, itoriginates from ‘You {OFWs] aresmuggling. You are breaking the law.’That presmption is to much],” the VicePresident said in an interview overRadyo 5.

Binay, the former PresidentialAdviser on OFW Concerns, said onlythe courts can decide if a person hasviolated the law or not.Run after syndicates

Sen. Ferdinand Marcos Jr.also on Tuesday said the BOC shouldactively go after syndicates operatinginside the bureau.

According to Marcos, he isthankful that the Aquino administrationrealized that the move of BOC tophysically check balikbayan boxes is amistake and that a huge majority ofFilipinos have expressed strongobjections to it.

“I don’t understand thisoppression of our OFWs. They[OFWs] were forced to find workaboard, away from their familiesbecause the government can’t providethem work and now the governmentwants to check balikbayan boxes onsuspicion that they are trying tosmuggle item into the country,”Marcos said in an interview afterspeaking to students of the Universityof Perpetual Help in Las Piñas City(Metro Manila).

If the BOC wants to improve itscollection, he added, the best thing todo is to seriously go after syndicatesoperating inside the bureau.

“We have heard of 2,000containers that had disappeared andcould not be found by the Customs[bureau]. We received news that eventrash from another country found itsway to Philippine soil, yet they arezeroing in on balikbayan boxes,”Marcos said.

“Mapupuyat ka, mababaliw kasa kaiisip sa mga exams, schedules(both work and school), pero sobrangbeneficial siya sa future mo. At saka

Bea is a freshman at theMeridean International College takingup a film course.

“Na-miss ko din kasi ’yungpumapasok. Gusto ko ulit ma-feel’yung tipong gigising ka nang maagatapos papasok ka sa school, taposmay socialization, ’yung ganun,” shesaid.

She believes that forsomeone who is out to achieve acertain goal, there are no excuses –only reasons and the drive to make ithappen.

“Basta po ang masasabi kolang, kahit gaano pa sila ka-busy,kung gusto talaga nila, kaya nilanggawan ng paraan ’yun. And as longas they want to reach something, magagawa nila,” she said.

Bea’s hard work paid off

when she topped the latest NationalCollege Assessment Examination witha 99% grade.

“Ang sarap lang talaga safeeling dahil it’s very unexpected…I’m very thankful,” she joyfully shared.

“Mangiyak-ngiyak nga silaeh,” she said of her family after tellingthem the news. “Actually ako din. Kasihindi talaga ako makapaniwala. Likenu’ng tinawagan ako nung teacherko, sabi ko, ‘Sir talaga po? Siguradopo ba talaga kayo? Paano niyo ponalaman? Sino po ang nagsabi?’” shesaid.

Indeed, life is full of surprises.“Natatandaan ko pa while taking theexam kinakabahan pa ako.Nagdadasal pa ’ko na Lord, sanakahit pumasa lang ako okay na. So’yun, parang advance birthday gift narin siya,” she said.

Everyone has dreamsand many want theirs big.

Yet for every kid who dreamsof becoming the president, the popeor a pop star, there are those whodream of becoming teacher or soldier– just like popular actress LizaSoberano.

“Gusto ko talaga magingsundalo, ’yun ang unang dream ko,”Liza revealed in a recent interview.“Mahilig kasi talaga ako sa mgaboyish stuff.”

Liza was influenced by hergrandfather Jeff who was with themarines.

The dream changed alongthe way, with Liza eventually settingher sights on becoming a doctor.

“Kasi ’yun ’yung kinuha ngmommy ko,” she related.

Then she changed her mindagain.

“Gusto ko na maging lawyer,”she said befor adding, “Pero itongayon, artista na.”

Well, fate always finds a way.On Liza’s part, it was her aunt

who persuaded her to try acting.Though she admitted being

hesitant at first, Liza enjoys where sheis now.

Already, she wants to sink herteeth into a variety of roles, eager toexpand her knowledge of the craft.

True to her nature, however, she revealed wanting to try her handin action films.

“Hindi naman ito like, biglaan.Dream ko since before pa talaga todo action,” she maintained.

As if to defend her choice, sheadded, “Very sporty ako. Du’nlumalabas ’yung confidence ko.”

Liza is into volleyball, soccer, football and basketball. She used toplay everyday in school, prior to beingswamped with showbiz chores.

NO TO DEBUTLiza will celebrate her 18th

Liza’s dreams

birthday on Jan. 4 next year. When others would want a

grand coming-of-age party, Lizawould rather organize a charityprogram.

“Ayoko po talaga ng debut…I’d rather keep it simple. Tsakabirthday ko ’yun eh, so I should enjoy.Ayoko ’yung ma-i-stress ako sa debutko na parang nine-nerbyos ako, oruptight na ganu’n,” she related.

But when it comes toreceiving gifts she said, “I’m not reallybig on gifts. I like giving back on mybirthday. I like to give away stuff. So,on my birthday, I’m gonna request forhelp sana from my sponsors to helpme organize a charity event.”

BAD EXPERIENCEJust like many girls her age,

Liza Soberano

Liza also has crushes. And as girlsare wont to do, she had tried to hideit from the boy she likes.

“Nasanay ako na ganu’n, ‘didaw dapat sabihin para iwas gulo…so ’pag crush ko, lumalayo talagaako. Kadalasan kasi nakakalimutanko, kinakausap ko,” she shared, laughing.

It didn’t help that she had abad experience prior.

“Dati, meron akong bagongpabango na may glitters na gustokong ipakita sa crush ko. Nasaschool bus kami nu’n, then nasa likodko siya. Pagharap niya, na-spray kosa mata niya! Sobrang fail ako ‘pagnagpapakita ako ng like sa isangtao.”

OVERCOMING FEARSJoining showbiz has given

Liza the chance to overcome many ofher fears.

“Grabe ’yung hiya ko saumpisa. Eh, ’di ba when you’re shy,you have a tendency na iniipit ’yungboses? So I had to, like, improve my

voice. I also had to improve myTagalog and the way I talk and facepeople,” she said.

Liza is happy to be the face ofJohnson and Johnson Philippines’Camp Courage advocacy, notinghow she wants to help build theconfidence of others her age.

“I really wanna make a

difference. I believe I was born tomake a difference talaga and to helppeople or at least encourage themkahit papa’no. As a celebrity, I thinkthat’s part of our duty to encouragethe young ones to be the best theycan be.”

The most valuable advice shecould give young girls is for them tolearn to be themselves.

“Kasi it comes out morenaturally if you just act the way thatyou are and you don’t have topretend. When you’re on stage andthey ask you questions, you are ableto answer truthfully, while if you’repretending to be somebody, youcould get lost. It’s just easy when youare yourself.”

Concert King Martin Nieverais not about to slow down despitehaving already achieved so much inhis career.

“That’s the best part,” hesays, noting how he aims to celebratehis 33rd anniversary with a bang.

One of the activities he hasscheduled in the coming days is aconcert dubbed “Home at theTheater” of Solaire Resort and Casinoon Sept. 18, 8 p.m.

Though not as grandiose ashis other concerts here and abroad,Martin said, “There is no such thing asa small gig.”

He explained, “Whether I’m inthe Theater, whether I’m in Eclipse, inAustralia in front of 500 people I attackevery gig like it’s my first and my last.”

So, what can people expectfrom his Solaire concert?

“They will hear songsencompassing the last 33 years of mycareer,” he replies.

Martin is not just singing hisown hits. “We’re gonna bring a lotof… ’coz in Vegas I’ve learned a lot…

so we might just throw some songsthat you don’t hear often,” he said.

He plans to ask fans via socialmedia what they want to hear at theconcert.

Martin stressed he is notdoing this to trump younger stars.

“I’m not worried about beingnumber two, been there, done that.I’ve been number last and the bestthing about being last and fall on yourface is to get up,” he said.

At this point, Martin hopes tomake The Theatre his “pwesto.”

“They don’t do that here.Singers, up-and-coming ones, notjust singers considered laos, theyshould be singing nightly. BarryManilow did it for years, he justretired…Celine Dion also. We shoulddo that here at the Solaire. I can dothat. We have so many singers but sofew places to sing, to perform,” heexplained.

Working with Martin for theconcert is his favorite musical directorand friend Louie Ocampo.

Martin Nievera still at it

When it comes torelationships, TV host Luis Manzanoplays it safe: He never mixes moneywith love matters.

With the elections next year,Luis has been asked not only if he willrun for public office but accept moneyfrom girlfriend Angel Locsin should hejoin politics.

“As of now, parang ayokotalaga,” Luis said. “Ganyan kami niAngel… Kunwari kumakain kami salabas na ako nagbabayad, the nextkailangan siya talaga.” Apparentlythey have also adopted this splitarrangement when it comes tospending for vacations.

Though still undecided onrunning for a public post, Luis saidAngel has his back whenever, whatever.

“Hindi ko lang inaasahan,(pero) siya pa ang nagsabi sa akin na,‘Kulit, kung sakaling itutuloy mo angpagtakbo mo I’ll be behind you,’” heshared.

On spending his own moneyfor the campaign, he may be willing

but joked, “Ang problema siguro aybaka isang barangay lang angmakampanya ko kapag ganoon.”

He knows acceptingcampaign funds from other peoplecan’t be helped, he insisted, “Gustoko klaro.” By that he meant, “Hindiporke may support ka, hindi porkemay utang na loob na ko, namagkakaroon na ako ng favors to begranted. Napaka-trapo naman niyon.”

NO TO ‘NUPWith money not an issue

between them, Luis said he doesn’teven believe in having a pre-nuptialagreement. “May tiwala naman akokay Angel,” he insisted.

As he has said so in the past,he added, “Definitely mas maramingpera sa akin si Angel, kaya kongsabihin ‘yon. Kung anuman angmeron ako ay katiting lang sa meronsiya so ang kapal ko naman huminging pre-nup.”

Proving that love is sweeterthe second time around, Luis saidthey are no longer troubled by boutsof insecurities unlike in the past.

Declaring themselves “veryhappy” and describing theirrelationship as “easy-easy na,” henoted, “Hindi ‘yung naging kayo peromaraming question marks. Minsannga sa isang araw ay isang beseslang kaming mag-usap kasi mayginagawa ako, may ginagawa siya. We’re very content.”

Luis is busy hosting “TheVoice Kids Season 2.” For him, the sixfinalists – Kyle Echarri and ZephanieDimaranan from Team Sarah; ElhaNympha and Sassa Dagdag fromTeam Bamboo; and Reynan Del-anayand Esang De Torres from Team Lea –“have already reached stardom.”

He added, “Iba na sila.Kumbaga, they are so close to theirdreams na they’re different individualsfrom the first day they set on stage. Itmakes us proud to be part of thatjourney.”

It's more what the Philippinesdoesn't have than what it does havethat's making the country SoutheastAsia's safe haven amid an emerging-market rout.

Relatively low levels of foreigninvestment in its bonds and stocksare shielding the Philippines from anintensifying selloff, while acomparative lack of raw materialsmeans it's less vulnerable thanIndonesia or Malaysia to slidingcommodities prices. Stability underPresident Benigno Aquino stands incontrast to Thailand, ruled by themilitary since May 2014, andMalaysia, where the prime minister isfacing calls to resign amid a politicalscandal.

Philippine local-currencysovereign bonds returned 2.9 percentover the last three months, the most inSoutheast Asia. The peso has held upbetter than its peers, losing 4.5percent, compared with drops of 8percent in Thailand's baht, 12 percentin Indonesia's rupiah and 18 percentin Malaysia's ringgit. The benchmarkManila stocks index has also declinedthe least in the region over the period.

"It's definitely the regionalstar," said Edwin Gutierrez, who helpsoversee $13 billion as the head ofemerging-market sovereign debt atAberdeen Asset Management inLondon. "In a world starved of growth,Philippine growth -- albeit slowing -- isholding up relatively well," he said, adding that a relative lack of foreignparticipation had protected thecountry from capital flight.

The economy expanded 5.7percent last quarter from a yearearlier, according to a Bloombergsurvey before data due Aug. 27. Thatwould be an improvement from 5.2percent expansion in the first threemonths, although slower than 6.1percent in 2014. Indonesian andMalaysian growth slowed to 4.67percent and 4.9 percent, respectively, last quarter, while Thai grossdomestic product increased 2.8percent.

A burgeoning business-process outsourcing industry isaiding the Philippine economy.Revenue from BPO, which includescustomer call centers as well as thefarming out of accounting tasks, willrise to $21.2 billion this year and $25billion in 2016 from $18 billion in2014, according to the IT andBusiness Process Association of thePhilippines.

Money sent home by Filipinosliving abroad, which makes up about10 percent of GDP, increased 5.6percent to $12.1 billion in the first halffrom a year earlier. A net oil importer, the Philippines has also benefitedfrom falling crude prices. The countryran a $3.3 billion current-accountsurplus in the first quarter, comparedwith $1.5 billion in the same period of2014, according to central bank data.

The Philippines'

consumption-based economy andsteady dollar inflows mean it'sinsulated from China's yuandevaluation and U.S. interest-rateincreases, according to Jay Peiris, theInternational Monetary Fund'srepresentative in Manila.

"It's very hard to think of acountry that's less vulnerable," he saidin an Aug. 20 interview.

Peso sovereign notes are thebest performers in Asia afterTaiwanese securities in the last threemonths, according to Bloombergindexes. Thai debt returned 1.6percent, while Malaysian andIndonesian paper declined 1.1percent and 3.1 percent, respectively.

Around 10 percent ofPhilippine bonds are foreign-owned,according to BPI Asset Managementand Trust Group, part of the country'ssecond-largest lender. That compareswith 39 percent in Indonesia, 31percent in Malaysia, and 17 percent inThailand at end-March, AsianDevelopment Bank figures show.

"Philippine fixed-incomeassets stand out versus their Asianpeers largely due to the dominance ofdomestic investors," said MarioMiranda, senior vice president at BPIAsset in Manila.

Outflows from Philippinestocks have also been more modestthan for regional peers. Some $332million has been pulled from thecountry's shares this quarter, compared with $587 million fromIndonesia and $1.6 billion fromThailand. The Philippine benchmarkshare gauge is down 13 percent inthree months, trailing drops of 13.8percent in Thailand, 14.3 percent inMalaysia and 21 percent in Indonesia.

Filipinos go to the polls nextyear to elect a new president, withAquino prohibited from running foranother six- year term. Since 2010, hisadministration has pursued taxevaders and corrupt officials, allowingit to collect more revenue to buildroads and schools and boost cashhandouts to the poor, while shrinkingbudget deficits.

Standard & Poor's hasupgraded the Philippines' credit ratingfour times during Aquino's tenure andall of the three big ratings companiesassess it as investment grade.

Strong growth fundamentals,a large English-speaking population, fiscal and monetary prudence, andpolitical stability support the positiveoutlook on the economy, said AndrewWood, the Singapore-based head ofAsia Country Risk Research at BMIResearch, part of Fitch Group.

"The Philippines' large andgrowing labor force, along withincreased policy-making credibility, should continue to draw investors'interest over the medium term," hesaid. "We believe the Philippines cancontinue to outperform the region."

Philippines becomes regional staras gloom descends around Asia

LeBron apologized for a lackof early-season above-the-rim playbefore picking up the pace a bit aftera two-week midseason siesta, but itseemed clear that — despite the carb-cutting and intense workouts —James was less explosive and moregroundbound at age 30, after fourstraight years of Finals trips with theHeat and more than 36,000 careerNBA minutes. But just becauseLeBron doesn't throw down monsterdunks as often anymore doesn'tmean LeBron can't throw downmonster dunks, as he showed thosein attendance at an exhibition game inthe Philippines earlier this week:

James showed off his still-oiled-up springs during an exhibitiongame as part of a four-day trip toManila "to mentor finalists of 'Rise,' aNike-sponsored reality TV programaimed at finding young Filipinobasketball players, mostly from thecountryside, and to hone theirtalents."

Residents of the basketball-mad country seized on theopportunity to get up close andpersonal with the Cavs star — ticketsfor his Manila appearance "weresnapped up by eager fans" in "just 15minutes" — and gave James anexceedingly warm welcome, according to Camille B. Naredo ofABS-CBN News.com:

"You guys always welcomeme and my guys and my friends withopen arms, so it's always a pleasure,"James said during a brief pressconference. This time around, James is in town toserve as a mentor of sorts to youngbasketball players who areparticipating in Nike's "Rise" program,

and the four-time NBA Most ValuablePlayer hopes to impart some valuablemessages to the contestants."I think, it's more than teaching themthe skill sets," he said. "It's about theinspiration that comes behind it. Totell them about the game, and it's upto them to use that – the words that Itell them, and to use those to betterthemselves."As James tells it, that emphasis onmentoring, inspiration and lending ahelping hand — which also helpeddrive his new partnership with theUniversity of Akron to provideguaranteed four-year collegescholarships to qualifying studentsthrough his "I Promise" program —comes in part from an ability torecognize and relate to the strugglefor improving one's station in life thatmany of "the Rise kids" areexperiencing, according to TheAssociated Press:

"I think my story speaks foritself, you know I was a kid who didn'tbelieve that I can't make my dreambecome a reality, and I know it willtake a lot of hard work, a lot ofsacrifice and a lot of love," he said. "Ijust love the game so much that Iwon't let nobody tell me that I couldn'taccomplish something, so I knowexactly what a lot of these kids aregoing through."The four-time NBA MVP [...] said it"feels great to be able to be someonethat people look to, to be able toaccomplish more."We presume it must also feel great tobe able to be someone that can stillcall down quite a bit of thunder, evenafter a dozen seasons of heavy-dutyNBA minutes.
