  • File Transfer

Transferring files from one computer to another is one of the most common tasks expected from a networking or internetworking environment.

As a matter of fact, the greatest volume of data exchange in the Internet today is due to file transfer. File Transfer in Computer networks by Rishabh RJ

  • Topics to be discussed

Two applications are currently available for transferring les over the Internet:

File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP).File Transfer in Computer networks by Rishabh RJ

  • What is FTP File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is the standard mechanism for one of the most common tasks on the Internet, copying a le from one computer to another. For example, two systems may use different le name conventions. Two systems may have different ways to represent text and data. Two systems may have different directory structures. All of these problems have been solved by FTP in a very simple and elegant approach.

FTP uses the services of TCP. It needs two TCP connections.

The well-known port 21 is used for the control connection and the well-known port 20 for the data connection.File Transfer in Computer networks by Rishabh RJ

  • Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP)There are occasions when we need to simply copy a le without the need for all of the functionalities of FTP. Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) is designed for these types of le transfer. It makes one single connection and transfers a small le quickly. However, this application is not universally availableFile Transfer in Computer networks by Rishabh RJ
