MEDES: Desing of the Database
A team was created to analyse the situation and the project viability : to create a new database.
Requirements
Access to the database: accessible from the Intranet
Database fields clear and well-define: authors, source, type of document, notes, summary, and key wordsSearch system based on boolean algebra
Screens’ structure: simple and clear
Search modes: It should at least include the free and advanced search modes
Keywords: all the references will be indexed by key words
Content of the references: the whole contents of the journals will be included
Summary: all the bibliographic references include an author summary
Accessibility and handling: easy access and easy handling

Journal titles the most relevant titles concerning the therapeutic fields researched by the laboratory
Start year 2001-
Updating frequency was established as monthly
Thesaurus: MEDES has its own thesaurus
Software: no software application on the market could be adapted to our needs, an internal software was created (Oracle application)
Working groupsA work group was created : members of the Medical Information Department and Systems Department Two different interfaces were created: internal use.

Conclusions
After many months of work, MEDES has became operative
Results of all these efforts can be seen in this living tool
It has been a very positive an interesting experience
The creation of this tool means a commitment to our users with no time limit
Our next stage is to convert the current keyword index into a complete thesaurus, which constitutes a new and fascinating professional challenge.
