Configuring 802.1x for a Windows Vista Local Area Connection INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SERVICES California State University, Los Angeles Version 1.0 Fall 2008 This document provides instructions on how to set up a computer to connect to the University’s network in buildings with an 802.1x network connection utility installed. NOTE : When performing the configuration process as described in this document, users may occasionally see a dialog box open reminding them that they are about to change system settings. When this occurs, click the Continue button to proceed with the configuration. Windows Vista LAPTOP USERS : If a user has been connecting to the campus network using the available wireless service, then the wireless adapter on the computer should be disabled before attempting to connect to the network with the network connection utility and the 802.1x. To disable the wireless adapter: 1. Open the Control Panel. 2. Click the Network and Sharing Center button. The Network and Sharing Center opens (see Figure 1). 3. Configuring 802.1x for a Windows VistaLocal Area Connection

This document provides instructions on how to set up a computer to connect to the University’s network in buildings with an 802.1x network connection utility installed.

NOTE: When performing the configuration process as described in this document, users may occasionally see a dialog box open reminding them that they are about to change system settings. When this occurs, click the Continue button to proceed with the configuration.

Windows Vista LAPTOP USERS: If a user has been connecting to the campus network using the available wireless service, then the wireless adapter on the computer should be disabled before attempting to connect to the network with the network connection utility and the 802.1x.

To disable the wireless adapter:1. Open the Control Panel. 2. Click the Network and Sharing Center button. The Network and Sharing Center

opens (see Figure 1). 3. Click the link for the wireless network connection. The connection information

will disappear when the adapter is disabled.

Setting up the 802.1x Network Using the Network Connection Utility

To perform the setup:1. Launch Internet Explorer. The system will be directed to the Network Access Control

Interface. Select “click here” to install the 802.1x network feature (see Figure 2).

2. Check I accept the terms of the End-user License Agreement checkbox and then press the green Start button (see Figure 3).

A screen will show where the user will need to indicate if they log onto their machine with a network account or with a different account (see Figure 4).

CONFIGURING NON-UNIVERSITY IMAGED SYSTEMS If you log onto the computer with your University network account, skip to the procedures on page 11.

If the machine is a personal or non-University imaged system or they log on with a local account (not a University network account), select the “All others” option (see Figure 4) and proceed as follows:

1. Click the “Continue” button (see Figure 4).

2. After selecting the network connection the user will be presented with a security notice. After reading the message, the user can indicate agreement to abide by the University’s security policies and guidelines by clicking the Continue button (see Figure 5).

3. The system will load network configuration components onto the computer (see Figure 6).

4. When networking components have been loaded, an authentication screen will open asking for the user account information. Enter the User name, Password and Domain information in the appropriate text boxes then click the Continue button (see Figure 7).

5. The system will install network features on the computer. The process may take 1-2 minutes to finish (see Figure 8).

6. Click the “Wireless Network Connection” bubble when it appears on the Task Bar (see Figure 9).

7. An authentication window will open (see Figure 10). Enter the User name, Password and Domain in the appropriate text boxes then click the OK button.

8. After successful authentication, the screen will indicate that a successful connection was made to the network (see Figure 11).

CONFIGURING PCS_IF YOU LOG ON WITH A UNIVERSITY NETWORK ACCOUNT

If the machine is a University imaged system, select the “University imaged PC” option (see Figure 12) and proceed as follows:

1. Click the “Continue” button (see Figure 12).

2. After selecting the network connection the user will be presented with a security notice. After reading the message, the user can indicate agreement to abide by the University’s security policies and guidelines by clicking the Continue button (see Figure 13).

6. After successful authentication, the screen will indicate that a successful connection was made to the network (see Figure 17).

NOTE: If you are unable to establish an 802.1x connection it may be because the computer has an alternate 802.1x setting already selected. If this is the case you must unselect the current configuration to get connected to the CSULA network. This does not need to be done each time a computer is plugged into the CSULA network, only upon the first attempt, if an alternate setting is selected in the system.

To check and disable a different 802.1x authentications in Windows Vista:

1. Open the Control Panel.2. Click the Network and Sharing

Center button. The Network and Sharing Center window will open (see Figure 19).

3. Click the link. 4. The Local Area Connection Status

dialog box will open.5. Click the Properties button.6. Click the Authentication tab on the

Local Area Connection Properties dialog box.

7. Uncheck the Cache user information for subsequent connections to this network check box (see Figure 18).

8. Uncheck the Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication check box (see Figure 18).

9. Click the OK button and close any open Control Panel windows.
