Please remember that modesty, respect and good judgment in

Dresses, skirts and shorts should be near the knee. Off the

shoulder or low cut dresses or blouses, tank tops, muscle shirts

and tight fitting clothes are a sign of disrespect to the church.

5th Sundy in Ordinary Time

February 10, 2019

The central theme of today’s readings is about listening and

responding to the call of God.

Isaiah is the first of the Major Prophets, and today’s reading

relates his call. He thinks he is unworthy because of his unclean

lips. A burning ember cleanses him of his sins. Then he hears the

Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, who will go for us?” Isaiah

immediately responds, “Here I am, send me!”

We all know the events leading up to the call of Paul. After being

schooled and receiving the power of the Holy Spirit, he traveled

through the gentile regions bringing many to Christ. Paul re-

minds the Corinthians of all he taught them about the death and

resurrection of Christ and other post resurrection events.

Today’s Gospel from St. Luke recounts the beginnings of Jesus’

ministry and the calling of Peter. Like Isaiah, Peter also felt

unworthy to be in Jesus’ presence. Accepting Christ’s call, Peter

becomes a fisher of men as did his fishing partners, James and

John.

Each of us at our Baptism, were anointed with oil as a sign that

joins us to Christ in the threefold mission of prophet, priest and

king. Not necessarily in title or vocation, but in the example we

give to the world in how we live our lives. Whatever our calling,

we should do our best to fulfill it diligently and with sincerity. We

should pray daily for guidance and for a sincere desire to do the

will of the Lord. How do we know the Lord’s will? This comes

about through prayer, prayer, and more prayer.

Beginning January 22, another Apologetics class started. This is

an excellent way to learn more about your Catholic faith. It’s not

too late to begin. Information is in the bulletin.

Another avenue for prayer can be found on Relevant Radio, a

Catholic radio station located in Wisconsin. They broadcast

across the United States, and via the internet throughout the

world. Residents of Socorro can tune into 99.9 FM and take part

in prayers or listen to other programs about our faith. The Divine

Mercy Chaplet is prayed at 2 pm local time and Holy Rosary is

prayed at 6 pm local time. For those who can’t get the radio

station, there is the Relevant Radio app that can be downloaded to

your iphone or android phone. We are regular participants of the

2 pm broadcast where we join thousands in offering prayers for

many families and friends. Try it, you might get hooked.

Jesus I Trust in You

Your brother in Christ,

Robert
