Peter- and- Paul Fortress was the first building of St. Petersburg, constructed first of wood and earth and then rebuilt with stone by the mid-18th century. The Fortress walls hold the Peter and Paul Cathedral (1727), the city’s highest building (122.5 m), which is the burial place of all Russian Emperors (from Peter the Great to Nicholas II) with the exception of Peter II and John VI. For three centuries, since its establishment, the fortress has not participated in any military actions.
