HOW WE GOT HERE#6 FGCU - 62, #2 Mercer - 58(Box Score on Page 43)MACON, Ga. - Fueled by arguably its best defensive performance of the season, the sixth-seeded FGCU men’s basketball team rallied from six points down late in the second half to stun second-seeded Mercer, 62-58, on its home court to advance to the Atlantic Sun Championship. • Playing in front of a University Center record crowd of 3,497 fans, the Eagles (15-16), who defeated third-seeded USC Upstate in the quarterfinals, turned away another top seed in Mercer (22-11) to become just the sixth team in the 33-year history of the A-Sun Tournament to make the champi-onship in its first appearance. • Trailing 54-49 with 6:18 remain-ing, the Eagles clamped down on the defensive end, holding the Bears without a field goal the rest of the way en route to completing the comeback. FGCU gave up points on just 3-of-12 defensive possessions over the final 6:18 and all four points came at the free throw line. • With near identical stat lines across the board, FGCU’s biggest edge came from the bench where they out-scored the Bears 25-11. CHRISTOPHE VARIDEL’S 13 points came one night after going for 14 against USC Upstate off the bench. The Versoix, Switzerland product’s double figure game was the 36th supplied by the FGCU bench this season, leading the way for the team’s 22nd contest with 25+ points from the pine.
#6 FGCU - 71, #3 USC Upstate - 61(Box Score on Page 42)MACON, Ga. - Behind a 24-10 run to open the second half, the sixth-seeded FGCU men’s basketball team erased a seven-point halftime deficit with a strong final 20 minutes to defeat third-seeded USC Upstate, 71-61, on Thursday night in the final Atlantic Sun Tourna-ment quarterfinal contest at the University Center. • As it has been all year, balance was theme for FGCU, as five players reached double figures for the ninth time this season (9-0). Sophomore CHRISTOPHE VARIDEL led the way with 14 points and six rebounds off the bench, marking the 12th time this season the team’s leading scorer has come off the pine. • Just a week
removed from giving up 15 three-pointers to the Spartans in an 87-74 loss on Feb. 23, FGCU held USC Upstate to just 5-of-21 from beyond the arc. Full court pressure and a terrific one-on-one defensive job by junior SHERWOOD BROWN on A-Sun Player of the Year Torrey Craig were crucial in the Eagles limiting the Spartans to a 26.8 percent shooting clip (11-41) in the second half. • After shooting 25 percent in the first half, the Green and Blue shot a healthy 53 percent (16-30) in the final stanza that was keyed by a 6-of-9 performance beyond the arc. The Eagles, who were swept by the Spartans in the regular sea-son, out-scored USC Upstate 50-34 in the second half.
POSTSEASONPROPSA trio of Eagles earned postseason honors from the Atlantic Sun when awards were dished out on Monday evening. Junior SHERWOOD BROWN - one of two players in the A-Sun in the top 10 in both scoring and rebounding - earned a spot on the All-Conference second team, while rookies BRETT COMER and BERNARD THOMPSON occupied two of the five spots on the A-Sun All-Freshmen team. Brown is the team leader in both scoring (12.9) and rebounding (5.9), figures that are ninth and eighth in the A-Sun, respectively. A unanimous All-Freshmen choice, Thomp-son averages 11.6 points, while leading all conference rookies in rebounding (5.2) and steals (1.8). Comer leads the A-Sun in assists (5.6) and is second among freshman nationally, while producing 8.7 points per contest. FGCU has placed a player on the All-Con-ference second team two years in a row and at least one rookie on the All-Freshmen team three consecutive years.
STREAKING INTO THE TOP 10One of just two players in the Atlantic Sun that ranks in the top 10 in scoring and rebounding, junior SHERWOOD BROWN has upped his game since being inserted back into the starting lineup 13 games ago. Over the last 13 games, Brown has reached double figures 12 times with a trio of 20-point efforts and a pair of double-doubles. The Orlando product's 14.2 points and 6.6 rebounds over the 13 games have put him into ninth in the A-Sun in scoring (12.9) and eighth in rebounding (5.9).
INSTANT IMPACTFGCU's freshmen class has made a huge impact in their first season, accounting for 48 percent of the scoring (34.5), 36 percent of the rebounds (12.8) and 64 percent of the assists (8.6). At least one of the four freshmen has scored in double figures in 27 of 31 games, while the Eagles are 8-2 when three members of the quartet ac-complish the feat. Led by combo guard BERNARD THOMPSON'S 11.6 points per game, freshmen account for three the Green and Blue's top five scorers. Against Kennesaw State and Stetson, four freshmen reached double figures - the most in a single game in program history and the only two times this season in the nation .
LEADERS OF THE PACKFreshmen BERNARD THOMPSON and BRETT COMER made strong cases for A-Sun Freshman of the Year and found their way onto the All-Freshmen team. Thompson leads all A-Sun rookies in rebounding (5.2) and steals (1.9), while ranking second in scoring (11.6) - figures that are all in the top 20 in the A-Sun. Comer leads the league in assists (5.6) and is fifth among freshman in scoring (8.7). Thompson has led FGCU in scoring 10 times thanks to a team-best 22 double figure outings, while Comer has been the team leader in assists 28 times. Freshman FILIP CVJETI-CANIN ranks third in the A-Sun and first among freshman in three-point percent-age (.431). Thompson won the A-Sun Newcomer of the Week award two times, including the final one of the season, while Comer earned the accolade once.
SEEING DOUBLEFreshmen BRETT COMER and BERNARD THOMPSON each recorded a double-double against Stetson on Feb. 17, becoming the first pair of FGCU players to finish with a double-double in the same game since Nov. 27, 2007 - a streak of 141 games. Comer and Thompson combined for 28 points, 19 rebounds and 10 as-sists, as Comer's double-double featured points/assists (11/10), while Thompson's was of the points/rebounds (17/12) variety. Both Comer and Thompson have two double-doubles on the season, while the only other A-Sun freshman with one is Lipscomb's Malcolm Smith.

BALANCED ATTACKA season-best six players reached double figures for the second time this year in FGCU's win over Lipscomb, while at least five players have done so in nine times (9-0), and the Eagles are 10-4 when four or more players reach double-digits in the same game. Freshman BRETT COMER'S 24 points at Stetson were the most by an Eagle this season as he became the fourth player to reach the 20 point plateau. A total of eight players have reached double-digits this season, while seven have done so at least 10 times. Six different players have led the team in scoring at least once.
FROM DOWNTOWNSecond in the A-Sun at a 37.8 percent clip from three-point range and third with 7.8 treys per game, FGCU boasts four players in the top 10 individually by percentage. Sophomore CHRISTOPHE VARIDEL is second in the A-Sun (.438), freshman FILIP CVJETI-CANIN in third (.431), freshman BERNARD THOMPSON is ninth (.385) and junior SHERWOOD BROWN (.376) is 10th.
SHOOTER'S ROLLHighlighted by a program Division I record 64.7 percent shoot-ing night (33-51) at Stetson on Jan. 20, FGCU is third in the A-Sun in field goal percentage (.457) and second in three-point percentage (.378). The Eagles have been held below 40 percent in a game just seven times (1-6), while going 8-1 when break-ing the 50-percent plateau. FGCU shot 50 percent or better in three straight games (@Stetson, Longwood, Kennesaw State), a program Division I record and just the fourth time in the 10 years of the program it has been accomplished. The Green and Blue's current 45.7 field goal percentage is on pace to break the single-season record.
HELPING HANDFreshman BRETT COMER leads the A-Sun, is second among all freshmen and 36th nationally in assists per game (5.5). High-lighted by his 12-assist night against Longwood, Comer is the first A-Sun player since 2007 to have four double figure assist games in the same season. He has led the team in assists in all but three games and has passed out seven or more helpers 10 times. His 171 assists on the season rank fifth in single-season history and are three off the D-1 record, while he is trying to become the first freshman to lead the league in assists since Mercer's James Florence did so in 2006-07.

HEAD COACH - FIRST SEASONENFIELD
THE ENFIELD INFLUENCEOn March 31st, the FGCU men’s basketball program got a new look for its 10th sea-son in program history when ANDY ENFIELD was named head coach. Enfield, who spent the previous five years as an assistant with Florida State, is the second head coach in FGCU’s brief history. While at FSU, Enfield was a part of two teams that advanced to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen and back-to-back clubs that lead the NCAA in defensive field goal percentage.

BIO Andy Enfield was appointed the second-ever head coach in Florida Gulf Coast men’s basketball history on March 31, 2011. Enfield will lead the program into its 10th season of existence and first as Division I postsea-son eligible in 2011-12. “It is with great pleasure that we welcome Andy, Amanda, and the rest of the Enfield family into FGCU, Southwest Florida, and our Eagles’ athletics family,” said Director of Athletics Ken Kavanagh. “A quality individual, Andy is a proven winner and brings to FGCU a tremendous wealth of experience and coaching suc-cess, on the both the collegiate and professional ranks. “In particular, he possesses a background of dem-onstrated commitment to excellence both on the court and in the classroom. In turn, we look forward to him providing energized daily leadership to our student-athletes, quickly getting engaged with our growing fan base and rapidly putting us in pursuit of the upper echelon of the Atlantic Sun Conference and beyond.” Enfield spent the previous five years as an assistant coach at Florida State, helping FSU to three consecu-tive NCAA Tournaments (2009-11), including the Sweet 16 in 2011. Enfield joined head coach Leonard Hamilton’s staff at Florida State in 2006. The Seminoles appearances in the last three NCAA Tournaments were the program’s first since 1998, as they accumulated 31 wins in ACC ac-tion over that span – second-most behind Duke – and advanced to the program’s first-ever ACC champion-ship game in 2009. With three straight 20-win seasons to its credit, FSU advanced to the 2011 Sweet 16 in the Southwest Region by defeating No. 10 Texas A&M and No. 2 Notre Dame in Chicago. Recruiting and player development were chief among Enfield’s responsibilities at FSU where its 2010-11 roster boasted 11 top 100 recruits and a pair of McDonald’s All-Americans. In 2009, Basketball Times named Enfield the nation’s “Most Visible Assistant Coach” for the summer recruiting period, while ESPN The Magazine donned him one of “Five Super Assis-tant Coaches in College Basketball” during the 2008-09 campaign. Enfield’s prowess on the recruiting trails helped the Seminoles produce three straight top 25 classes, highlighted by the 2008 group that ranked in the top 10. A former NBA assistant with the Boston Celt-ics and Milwaukee Bucks, Enfield’s influence helped FSU develop five NBA draft picks over five seasons. Al Thornton (2007) and Toney Douglas (2009) were both selected in the first round and earned Associated Press All-American status while leading the ACC in scoring. In 2011, Chris Singleton became the Noles’ third first round pick in the last five years when the Washington Wizards took him with the 18th overall pick. A key ingredient to FSU’s success was its ability to play defense, as the Seminoles became the first team since the 1990-92 Georgetown clubs to lead the nation
in defensive field goal percentage two straight seasons from 2009-11. In 2010-11, the Seminoles limited their op-ponents to 36.3 percent shooting from the field to lead the nation for the second year in a row. With Singleton and Douglas, FSU had the ACC Defensive Player of the Year in two of Enfield’s last three seasons, while 2010 NBA second round pick Solomon Alabi was runner-up. Prior to his five years in Tallahassee, Enfield began his coaching career in the NBA from 1994-1996 where he served as the shooting coach for the Milwaukee Bucks and head coach Mike Dunleavy. While in Milwaukee, En-field worked with four-time NBA All-Star Vin Baker and No. 1 overall pick Glenn Robinson. Enfield continued his NBA career as an assistant coach with the Boston Celtics under head coach Rick Pitino from 1998-2000. Enfield worked closely with then-rookie Paul Pierce who went on to win the 2008 NBA Finals MVP award. With the Celtics, Enfield increased his duties on the bench to developing game plans and scouting reports, assisting in practice strategies and offensive player development. Known for his shooting expertise, Enfield helped the Celtics shoot 74.5 percent from the free throw line in 1999-2000, a 5.3 percent increase from the previous year for the biggest improve-ment in the league. After his stint with the Boston Celtics, Enfield be-came a player development consultant for several NBA teams, while running his own company called “All Net Basketball” which focused on improving shooting tech-nique and offensive skills. Over his time as a consultant and shooting instructor, Enfield coached more than 100 NBA players. During his collegiate playing career at Johns Hop-kins University, Enfield set the all-time NCAA career free-throw percentage record with a mark of 92.5 per-cent (431-466). Enfield still holds nine career records at Johns Hopkins and was inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001. He led the team in scoring in all four seasons en route to a program record 2,025 career points thanks to the top two single-season point totals in school history with 606 points in 1990 and 610 points in 1991. As good as he was on the court, he was just as sharp in the classroom, as the economics major earned GTE Academic All-America first team honors as a senior and second team honors as a junior. He was the first basketball player at Johns Hopkins to earn an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship and was named the NABC Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 1991. Enfield and his wife Amanda, have two daughters; Aila and Lily, and son, Marcum.

GAME 1TCU-73FGCU-72Nov. 11, 2011 at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum
FORT WORTH, Texas - Despite trailing by as many as 16 early in the second half, FGCU fought all the way back and had several chances to take the lead in the final seconds, but came up short in a 73-72 season-opening loss at TCU on Friday night at Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. Freshman point BRETT COMER quickly pushed the ball up the court and executed a dribble-handoff to Brown, who knocked down a three with 4.8 seconds on the clock to make it a one-point game, at 73-72. FGCU quickly fouled Thorn on the ensuing inbound pass after a timeout to put the All-Mountain West point guard at the foul line. Thorns’ front end of the 1-and-1 missed to the right and the rebound was tipped into the corner where FGCU failed to get off a desperation shot. Three different players reached double figures for the Eagles, led by freshman BERNARD THOMPSON’S (pictured) 15 points off the bench. Thompson poured in 11 of his 15 in the first half, while adding six rebounds and four assists. The catalyst of the second half comeback, Comer had a hand in 24 of FGCU’s 41 points in the final frame. Comer finished the game with 12 points and five assists with all but two of the points coming over the final 20 minutes. Sophomore CHASE FIELER turned in a clean stat line with 12 points on 4-of-4 from the field, including 3-for-3 from long range, five rebounds, four assists and two steals.
GAME 2FGCU-79AveMaria-65Nov. 14, 2011 at Alico Arena
FORT MYERS, Fla. - Sparked by 15 second half points from freshman BRETT COMER (pictured) and SHERWOOD BROWN’S 19 points off the bench, FGCU picked up its first win under head coach Andy Enfield against Ave Maria, 79-64, in front of 1,547 fans in the home opener at Alico Arena Monday night. FGCU created its first real separation of the game midway through the final frame, going on a 17-2 run over a seven-minute period that took what was a six-point lead and turned it into a the largest edge of the game (21), 58-37, for the Eagles with 9:02 play. Brown scored 10 of his 19 points in the first half, sinking 3-of-6 from three-point land, while also adding six rebounds and three steals. It was Comer’s turn in the second half, as the Winter Park, Fla. product reached double figures over the final 20 minutes alone for the second straight game. Comer finished 7-of-10 from the field for 17 points to go along with a game-high eight rebounds and four assists. After shooting just 31 percent in the first half, the Eagles shot a sweltering 69 percent (18-26) from the floor in the second frame en route to 48 points. FGCU’s finished above 50 percent for the second consecutive contest with a 52 percent clip (31-60). FGCU took advantage of its superior size to own a 44-27 advantage on the backboard and a 34-16 edge in points in the paint.

GAME 3FGCU-68PrairieViewA&M-59Nov. 17, 2011 at Alico Arena
FORT MYERS, Fla. - Led by freshman BRETT COMER’S first career double-double and a strong second half defensive effort, FGCU picked up its second straight win with a 68-59 victory against Prairie View A&M on Thursday night at Alico Arena. For the third straight game, Comer reached double figure points in the second half alone, sparking a 12-2 run that turned a 39-33 Panther lead into a 45-41 FGCU advantage that it would never relinquish. Comer accounted for four points during the run and assisted on both three-pointers by classmate FILIP CVJETICANIN and sophomore CHRISTOPHE VARIDEL. The Eagles held a five-point lead, 59-54, with just under three minutes to play, before putting the game away with eight straight points that gave the home team its largest lead of the game (13), 67-54, and its second home win in four days. FGCU outscored Prairie View A&M 38-25 and limited the Panthers to just 8-of-36 from the field over the final 20 minutes. A trio of freshmen led FGCU in scoring with Comer’s double-double coming on 15 points, 10 assists, six rebounds and three steals over 35 minutes of action. Comer did a majority of his damage in the second half comeback, scoring 11 points and while dishing out six assists. Freshman BERNARD THOMPSON (pictured) contributed 13 points, while Cvjeticanin was perfect from the field, going 3-of-3, including two from long range, to add 10 points off the bench.

DALLAS, Texas - Sophomore CHRISTOPHE VARIDEL (pictured) poured in a game-high 20 points and FGCU made 10 three-pointers as a team, but it wasn’t enough, as its two game-winning attempts in the final seconds came up short in a heartbreaking 65-54 loss at Conference USA foe SMU on Saturday afternoon at Moody Coliseum. The first 37 minutes of the game featured just two lead changes, but there were three over the final three minutes with the last coming on a breakaway layup by SMU’s Ryan Manuel off an FGCU turnover with 21 seconds left that gave the Mustangs a 65-54 lead. After calling a timeout, FGCU’s initial play was stopped, as Thompson had to take a fade away jumper from the top of the key that missed short. The miss caromed right to Varidel outside the right block where his put-back was to strong off the glass and glanced off the front of the rim as time expired. The one-point loss is the second of the season for the Eagles, who dropped a 73-72 decision in the season-opener at nearby TCU just over a week ago. Varidel accounted for six of FGCU’s 10 three-pointers, knocking down 6-of-7 from long range for 20 points in 25 minutes off the bench. Freshman BERNARD THOMPSON was the only other Eagle in double figures with 11 points, a game-high eight rebounds, three assists and two steals. Varidel and Thompson combined for 23 of FGCU’s 35 points in the first half.

MIAMI, Fla. - Despite holding Miami to 18 points and a 17 percent shooting clip (4-24) in the second half, FGCU couldn’t overcome an 18-point halftime deficit in a hard-fought 60-50 loss to the Hurricanes on Tuesday night at the BankUnited Center. The 18 points given up by the Eagles in the second half equals the best defensive effort over the final 20 minutes by the Green and Blue since joining Division I in 2007-08. Behind 15 points in the second half by junior SHERWOOD BROWN (pictured) and the stout defensive effort, FGCU out-scored Miami 26-18 in the final frame, but couldn’t avoid falling to 2-3 on the young season. The Eagles’ three losses have come by a combined 12 points, while Miami picked up its fourth straight win to open the season, which have all come home. After trailing 42-24 at the end of 20 minutes, FGCU quickly cut the Miami lead in half, opening the second frame on a 9-0 run that was capped by a three-pointer from Brown that forced Miami coach Jim Larranaga to call a timeout at the 15:49 mark. Brown’s three cut the Miami lead to 42-33, as the Hurricanes went the first 6:55 without a point by shooting 0-for-10 from the field. Brown added a jumper in the final minute to finish with FGCU’s final 10 points, but the Eagles couldn’t make up any ground as All-ACC guard Malcolm Grant went 5-of-6 from the line over the final 80 seconds to seal the win and halt the FGCU comeback.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Three players in double figures and a late push over the final 10 minutes helped FGCU rally from a double-digit deficit in the second half before falling short at Maryland, 73-67, on Friday night at the Comcast Center. Trailing by 16, 52-36, with 13:03 left, the Eagles fought back behind freshman point guard BRETT COMER, who scored 14 of his team-high 16 points in the second half. Comer’s layup with 48 seconds left cut it to a two-possession contest, at 70-66. After a pair of missed free throws from Terrell Stoglin gave the ball back to the Eagles, but a turnover in transition cost the visitors a chance to draw as close as one point. Despite being a 92 percent (23-25) shooter through the first four games, Stoglin, an ACC All-Freshman selection a year ago, made 2-of-4 from the line in the final 26 seconds, but FGCU came away with just one point over its final five possessions. Comer finished 7-of-12 from the field while adding six rebounds and three assists over a team-high 32 minutes. Fellow freshman BERNARD THOMPSON (pictured) came off the bench for 12 points, marking the fifth time in six games the bench has supplied a double figure scorer. Thompson added seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. For the sixth straight game, FGCU won the battle on the boards, finishing with a 42-37 edge, including 17 offensive caroms.

BALTIMORE, Md. - After making 4-of-5 from long range over the first 39 minutes of the game, sophomore CHRISTOPHE VARIDEL’S game-tying three-point attempt with six seconds left was blocked, putting an end to furious second half comeback by FGCU as it fell short at Loyola University Maryland on Sunday, 77-74, at Reitz Arena. Varidel and freshman BERNARD THOMPSON came off the bench to score a game-high 17 points each, but it wasn’t enough as the Eagles dropped their fourth in a row. FGCU, who was playing its fifth road game, has lost five games by a combined 21 points, including three by three points or less. Varidel and Thompson’s big day ignited the FGCU bench that produced 44 points, including 33 of the team’s 50 in the second half. It marked the fourth time this season that the Eagles’ leading scorer has come off the bench. Thompson scored 15 of his season-high 17 in the second half, including nine straight that cut the Loyola lead from 13 to four with 14 minutes left. Varidel’s 17 came on 4-of-6 from three and a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line. Both teams entered the day having out-rebounded all of their opponents, and it was FGCU that finished the fast paced 40 minutes with a 36-33 edge on the glass. FORT MYERS, Fla. - Junior SHERWOOD BROWN (pictured) scored a game-high 20 points and FGCU led for the final 37 minutes en route to a 72-63 win over ETSU in its Atlantic Sun Conference opener on Saturday at Alico Arena. The Eagles jumped out to an eight-point lead at the half and held on to win their A-Sun opener for the third time in five years. FGCU’s win snapped a five-game losing streak against the Buccaneers. Led by Brown’s 7-for-10 night from the field, FGCU shot 54 percent (27-50) from the floor, marking the third time this season it has shot over 50 percent in a game. On the flipside, the Eagles won the turnover battle, 16-14, and limited ETSU to a 35 percent (22-63) shooting clip. The 20-point game was the second of Brown’s career and he was joined in double figures by sophomore CHASE FIELER, who had 12 points. A majority of Brown’s 20 points came beyond the arc, knocking down 4-of-5 from deep. Fieler’s 12 points were joined by a team-high eight rebounds and four assists. FGCU’s bench came into the game averaging 30 points per game, but was limited to a season-low 17. On the bright side, freshman BRETT COMER came off the pine and dished out 10 assists for the second time this season. LINCOLN, Neb. - Dylan Talley’s runner with 10.4 seconds left gave Nebraska a 51-50 lead and FGCU failed to get off the potential game-winning shot, as the Eagles dropped a heartbreaker in Big Ten country on Wednesday night at the Devaney Center. The Eagles trailed 49-47 with less than three minutes to play until sophomore CHRISTOPHE VARIDEL’S 100th career three-pointer gave the visitors a one-point edge, 50-49 (1:23). After a stop on the defensive end, sophomore CHASE FIELER had a chance to give the Eagles a two-possession lead, but his three from the right corner rimmed out. FGCU stopped Nebraska’s initial play to get the ball inside to Jorge Brian Diaz so Talley retrieved the ball at the right wing and drove the baseline for the runner with 10.4 seconds left. Following a timeout with 7.1 seconds on the clock, FGCU in-bounded the ball from in front of its bench to freshman BERNARD THOMPSON who used a stagger screen to drive into the lane. Thompson kicked the ball out to Varidel on the right wing, but he never got the shot off as the buzzer sounded. For the fifth time this season, FGCU’s top scorer came from the bench, as junior SHERWOOD BROWN (pictured) had 14 points on 6-of-10 from the field over 31 minutes. Freshman FILIP CVJETICANIN also came off the pine, knocking down a quartet of threes to account for all 12 of his points.

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Freshman Ty Greene scored a season-high 21 points for the second straight game and redshirt sophomore Ricardo Glenn notched a double-double to lead USC Upstate to an 80-75 Atlantic Sun win over FGCU in a tightly played contest at Alico Arena on Monday night. In a game that featured nine lead changes and seven ties, neither team held a lead of more than five points until late in the second half when the Spartans used an 8-0 run to take the largest lead of the game (10), 68-58, with 4:47 left to play. Back-to-back three-pointers by junior SHERWOOD BROWN separated by just 14 seconds with under a minute to play quickly trimmed a nine-point Upstate lead down to 74-71. Unfortunately, for the Eagles that would be as close as they would come, as the Spartans grew the lead back to three possessions with 10 seconds to play en route to handing FGCU its first home loss of the season. Four players reached double figures for FGCU, led by 16 points from freshman BERNARD THOMPSON. Thompson scored 12 of his points in the second half, going 6-of-9 from the field to finish in double-digits for a team-best seventh time this season. The win was also the Green and Blue’s first ever at Veterans Memorial and their program-best fourth (4-2) A-Sun road victory of the year. FGCU’s 22 points off 21 Jacksonville turnovers were coupled with a 30.6 percent (15-49) clip from the field for the Dolphins, who fell to 4-19 and 2-10 in the A-Sun. On the flipside, the Eagles shot a respectable 46 percent (21-46). Playing in front of his family who made the commute from Georgia, freshman BERNARD THOMPSON (pictured) led the Eagles with 19 points on 7-of-10 from the field. Sophomore CHRISTOPHE VARIDEL contributed 12 points off the pine, marking the 19th time this season the bench has supplied a double figure scorer. Reigning A-Sun Player of the Week SHERWOOD BROWN had a hard-earned 10 points and team-high seven rebounds, and has now led the team on the boards in four consecutive contests.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Despite 23 points from junior SHERWOOD BROWN (pictured), FGCU couldn’t overcome 11 North Florida three-pointers in a 68-62 A-Sun loss Monday night at UNF Arena. The Eagles now sit in a tie for fourth place in the A-Sun with UNF at 7-6 in league play. Brown’s team-best third 20-point game of the season featured 15 of his game-high 23 points in the second half. One of three players in the A-Sun in the top 11 in scoring and rebounding, Brown added a game-high seven rebounds to his 10-of-19 night from the field in 29 minutes of work. Nearly half (33) of the Ospreys’ 68 points came from beyond the arc on 11-of-19 shooting, while the Eagles came away with 15 points from deep on an uncharacteristic 5-of-19 clip. Sophomore Christophe Varidel’s three-pointer with 6:47 on the clock made it a 59-56 game, a score that would stand over the next four minutes as the two teams combined to go the next six possessions without a point. Trailing by three, 63-60, with under a minute to play, FGCU began fouling to send UNF to the free throw line. The plane worked, as the Ospreys made just 3-for-8 from the free throw line over their next five times with the ball, but the Eagles couldn’t convert on the offensive end en route to their seventh straight loss to the Ospreys.

GAME 25Belmont-86FGCU-63Feb. 11, 2012 at Alico Arena
FORT MYERS, Fla. - A 12-0 Belmont run that stretched from the end of the first half into the opening four minutes of the second half highlighted a strong final 20 minutes for the Bruins, as FGCU fell, 86-63, on Saturday night in front of an Alico Arena crowd of 3,007 fans. All 11 of sophomore CHRISTOPHE VARIDEL’S (pictured) points came in the first half on 3-of-7 from long range. Junior SHERWOOD BROWN reached double figures for the seventh straight game with 10 points and six boards, while DANTE HOLMES made it 22 games that a freshman has scored in double figures for the Eagles with 10 off the bench. Six players reached double figures for Belmont, a feat FGCU accomplished earlier in the year in a win over Longwood and up until tonight was the only A-Sun team do so. Junior Ian Clark poured in a game-high 17 points on five three-pointers and dished out six assists with no turnovers. As a team, Belmont finished with 24 assists on its 30 field goals, led by a combined 20 assists and two turnovers from the combo of Clark, JJ Mann and Kerron Johnson. The difference in the game was the Bruins’ 50 percent (30-60) shooting night from the field and their ability to turn just 12 FGCU turnovers into 17 points. On the flipside, the Eagles shot 38 percent (22-58) and only had two points off turnovers due to Belmont committing just seven miscues.

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Behind six players in double figures, FGCU led for all but 15 seconds in a convincing 89-68 Atlantic Sun win over Lipscomb Monday night at Alico Arena. Eligible for postseason play for the first time in school history, the Eagles clinched a berth in the A-Sun Tournament with the victory. Balance has been the theme all season for the Green and Blue, as it marked the second time that six players have reached double figures in the same game, while the Eagles improved to 8-0 when at least five players accomplish the feat. FGCU was clicking on all cylinders on the offensive end, shooting 54 percent (34-63) for the game, while dishing out a season-high 24 assists to just 12 turnovers. Seven different players knocked down a three-pointer led by sophomore CHRISTOPHE VARIDEL’S 4-of-8 night, as the Eagles finished 11-of-23 as a team. Junior SHERWOOD BROWN led FGCU with his eighth straight double-digit outing that featured 13 points and six rebounds. Varidel scored all 12 of his points via the three-point shot, while redshirt junior EDDIE MURRAY and freshman BERNARD THOMPSON made it four starters in double-digits with 10 points and six rebounds each. GAME 27Stetson-86FGCU-80Feb. 17, 2012 at Alico Arena
FORT MYERS, Fla. - Junior Adam Pegg poured in a game-high 23 points to lead five players in double figures for Stetson, as the Hatters built a lead as large as 24 before fending off a late FGCU rally to hand the Eagles an 86-80 loss in front of an Alico Arena crowd of 2,352. Trailing 71-47 with 8:22 to play, the Eagles turned to some full court pressure defense in hopes of slowing down the Stetson offense that was unstoppable the first 32 minutes. The full court pressure paid off, as Stetson committed five turnovers over the next seven minutes while FGCU used five three-pointers, including three from freshman FILIP CVJETICANIN, to mount a comeback. Cvjeticanin’s third three of the run followed by freshman DANTE HOLMES’ floater capped a 24-6 spurt for the Eagles that brought the home team within six, 77-71, with 1:28 to play. A rare four-point play by freshman BERNARD THOMPSON (pictured) and a three-pointer by sophomore CHRISTOPHE VARIDEL with 16 seconds left cut the score to 84-80 – the closest the Eagles had been since the 3:55 mark of the first half. Despite scoring 15 points over the final eight minutes, Stetson was able to hold onto its sixth A-Sun win of the year by knocking down 9-of-10 from the free throw line over the final 1:04. The free throw line proved to be the biggest difference in the game, as the Hatters went 24-of-31 from the stripe while the Eagles made 6-of-9.

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - Behind a balanced scoring attack that featured four players with at least 15 points, ETSU led from start to finish as it handed FGCU an 84-71 loss Saturday afternoon on the final day of the Atlantic Sun regular season action at the MSHA Athletic Center. With the loss, FGCU (13-16, 8-10) earns the No. 6 seed in next week’s Atlantic Sun Tournament. The Eagles will take on third-seeded USC Upstate (20-11, 13-5) in the quarterfinal round. ETSU continued to roll, though, holding a double-digit lead for all but 1:40 the rest of the half en route to producing a 40-26 edge at the break.

MACON, Ga. - Fueled by arguably its best defensive performance of the season, the sixth-seeded FGCU rallied from six points down late in the second half to stun second-seeded Mercer, 62-58, on its home court to advance to the Atlantic Sun Championship Saturday night shown live on ESPN2 at 7 p.m. Playing in front of a University Center record crowd of 3,497 fans, the Eagles (15-16), who defeated third-seeded USC Upstate in the quarterfinals, turned away another top seed in Mercer (22-11) to become just the sixth team in the 33-year history of the A-Sun Tournament to make the championship in its first appearance. The Eagles appearance in the championship will also mark the third straight year that the tournament’s No. 6 seed has made the final. Trailing 54-49 with 6:18 remaining, the Eagles clamped down on the defensive end, holding the Bears without a field goal the rest of the way. FGCU gave up points on just 3-of-12 defensive possessions over the final 6:18 and all four points came at the free throw line. With near identical stat lines across the board, FGCU’s biggest edge came from the bench where they out-scored the Bears 25-11.
