Presentation Notes
Who can participate in the FFVP program? All students enrolled in grades 6 and below should be provided a snack. The FFVP is designed to target elementary-aged children. This includes children in the Head Start program operated by the school, split-session kindergarten, and early childhood programs operated by the school with students present during regular school hours. Teachers who are directly responsible for serving the fruits and vegetables to their students in the classroom are also allowed to have the fruit or vegetable snack. We highly encourage teachers to take part. By participating, teachers are providing positive role modeling. When teachers participate they are strongly encouraged to include a nutrition education component to the snack time. Later I will provide suggestions for easy nutrition education ideas.

Presentation Notes
The FFVP is not intended for other adults at the school, such as principals, custodians, teachers not directly involved, food service staff, secretaries, and other school staff or adults attending school functions. Junior high and high schools students are also restricted from receiving the snack, as are any community residents, parents, grandparents or school guests. The program and its funding is intended for elementary aged children exclusively. Make sure all staff are aware that they cannot participate in the fresh fruit or vegetable program, on reviews I often find out or see other staff participating when they shouldn’t be.

Presentation Notes
When can the snack be served? When you first applied for the FFVP, you indicated how many days you will offer the snack. The minimum number you had to select was 2 days, of course you could have also selected 3, 4, or 5. If you want to serve the FFVP more or less than you originally signed up for, let me know! Just to state again, you have been awarded funds based on the number of students enrolled and the number of days you are serving the produce. If you feel you will not be able to serve as many days as you applied for, you will need to let me know! Fruits and vegetables may only be served during the regular school day hours. You may decide on a specific time to serve the snack. Many schools plan two snack periods in the day. For classes that go to a later lunch, they get their snack in the morning. Those that go to an early lunch, get their snacks in the afternoon. I have seen other schools provide the snack to the classroom and then the teacher decides the best time to serve the fruit or vegetable. Just make sure that the fruits or vegetables, especially cut melons, leafy lettuce, or tomatoes are not out of refrigeration too long. I will explain in more detail when we cover produce safety. Sometimes your school might have a special activity scheduled, like a health and wellness fair or international day. Feel free to provide the fresh fruit and vegetable during this special activity, as long as it is taking place during the school day. Southeast Neighborhood School of Excellence did this during their Field Day this past year. They served fresh cherries and actually had a pit spitting contest!

Presentation Notes
Where can you serve snacks? Fruits and vegetables may be served in a variety of locations including the classroom, gymnasium, cafeteria, in hallways, the nurse’s office, library, or school office. Make sure students can easily access and consume the fruits and vegetables. Also be sure that the setting where the snacks are provided make nutrition education possible. The methods used to distribute fruits and vegetables will depend on the grade level of the students, the time available to eat the fruits and vegetables, and the time needed for preparation, service and clean up.

Presentation Notes
What can be served? The produce you serve should be presented in such a way that it will be easily identified or recognized for what it is. Encourage children to enjoy fruits and vegetables as they are. So here is what is allowed: Fresh fruits and vegetables, low fat or fat free dips for vegetables only, and cooked vegetables limited to once a week. If you plan to cook vegetables, you need to make sure you plan a nutrition education activity in conjunction with the cooked vegetables. Vigo County schools have actually cooked vegetables in front of their students before, giving the students a cooking lesson and a fun taste testing experience.

Presentation Notes
Remember when purchasing for the program the goal is to serve a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables in their natural state and without additives. Dicing and slicing into smaller pieces for ease of service, as well as the addition of ascorbic acid or citric acid to prevent browning is acceptable. If a product claims it is preservative- or additive-free, check labels before purchasing. Added sugars and flavors are not allowed. So Grapples, the apples that are flavored with grape flavoring is not allowed.

Low-fat yogurt based

Low-fat or non-fat

Presentation Notes
Are dips allowed? Yes, as long as the dip is served with vegetables, only. It must be low-fat yogurt based or low-fat or non-fat. The amount of dip served to each student should be an appropriate “serving size” for condiments. You will see the serving size on the Nutrition Facts Labels, usually this is only 1 to 2 tablespoons. Remember dips can only be served with vegetables NOT with fruits This doesn’t mean you have to serve vegetables with dips. Teachers often have trouble with the mess of the dips so many schools don’t offer it and the kids still eat the snacks!
