Welcome to the world of the MiniDisc!Here are some of the capabilities andfeatures you'll discover with the newMiniDisc Recorder.
• The MiniDisc station system — Use therecorder either by itself or attached tothe station dock. To record digitally oredit labels, use the recorder attached tothe station for enhanced features andconnectivity. To playback MDs or recordfrom the microphone, use the recorderdetached from the station for portability.
• Optical digital IN/OUT jack — Since thesignal is transmitted in digital form, youcan get high quality recordings.
• Sampling rate converter — This circuitenables you to record programs fromdigital equipment using other samplingrates, such as a BS tuner or DAT deck.
• Variety of recording options— Long recording with monaural
recording (up to 148 minutes).— Time Machine recording enables you
to record from the top of a song evenif you pressed the button after youheard the beginning of the song.
— Connect to an audio-timer to recordwhen you are not home.
• Easy editing with the large LCD paneland the editing buttons— Supports ”katakana” characters.— Title samples (42 words and phrases).— UNDO function lets you undo an
editing operation.• Programmed playback — Play any set of
tracks in the order of your choice.• Card remote commander — Operate the
station from a distance. Direct TrackSelection available.

Replacing the lithium ion batteryWhen the battery becomes weak, theworking distance of the remotecommander becomes shorter. Replace thebattery with a new CR2025 lithium ionbattery (not supplied).
1 Insert a pointed object to the slot. Slideand hold it as shown in the illustrationand pull out the battery tray.

Connect other equipment to the station,then plug in the AC power cord. Theexplanation here is for recording from aportable CD player through digital input.To connect for other ways of recording, see”Hooking up”, (page 75).

You can easily make digital recordings of adigital source on an MD.Before synchro-recording, makeconnections to the digital source with adigital cable, and insert a recordable MD.
1 Set INPUT switch to “OPT1” or“OPT2”.Set it to match the input jack connectedto the source.
2 Slide SYNCHRO REC to ON.“SYNC” appears in the display.
3 Press and slide REC to the right.The recorder stands by for recording.
4 Play the source sound. The recorderstarts recording when it receives theplaying sound.
To stop recording, press p.
Tips•You cannot pause manually during synchro-
recording.•When there is no sound from the player for
more than 3 seconds during synchro-recording, the recorder goes into the standbymode automatically. When the sound comesfrom the player again, the recorder resumessynchro-recording. If the recorder is kept inthe standby mode for 5 minutes or longer,the recorder stops automatically.
Note•Do not switch SYNCHRO REC after step 2.
Recording may not be done properly.
1) To go backwards or forward quicklywithout listening, pressP and keep pressing= or +.
2) Once you open the lid, the point to startplay will change to the beginning of the firsttrack.
If the playback does not startMake sure the recorder is not locked. If itis locked, slide the HOLD switch in theopposite direction of the arrow.

When using optional headphonesUse only headphones with stereo miniplugs. You cannot use headphones withmicro plugs.

The recorder stores sound input in itsmemory during record standby. When youstart Time Machine recording, the sound isrecalled from the memory and the recorderstarts recording the sound from 2 secondsbefore.This is convenient, for example, if you donot want to miss the beginning of a trackwhen recording from a BS or a FMprogram.
1 While holding down P, press andslide REC to the right.The recorder stands by for recording.
2 Play the sound source.The recorder will start storing thesound input.
3 If you want to record through analoginput, adjust the recording level(follow step 6 in ”Recording throughanalog input”, page 69).
4 Press TIME MACHINE REC to startrecording.The recorder will go back 2 secondsand start recording.
To stop recording, press p.
NoteIf you have taken less than 2 seconds betweensteps 2 and 3, then the time the recorder willgo back will also be less than 2 seconds.
Recording in monaural fordouble the normal recordingtime

Before recording, make connections to thesound source and the power source, andinsert a recordable MD. You can operate inthe same way on the station as on therecorder.
1 While pressing P, press and slide theREC switch to the right.The recorder stands by for recording.
2 Press the MODE button. “MONO” or“Monaural REC” appears in thedisplay, and the recorder switches tomonaural recording.
3 If you want to record through analoginput on the station, adjust therecording level (play the source andfollow step 6 in ”Recording throughanalog input”, page 69).

Tips•The recorder switches back to stereo
recording when you press p to stoprecording.
•If you record a stereo source in monaural,the sounds from left and right will be mixed.
•The MDs recorded in monaural can beplayed back only with an MD player/recorder that has the monaural playingfunction.
Recording from a microphone
See the illustration in the Japanese text(page 19).
Connect a microphone to the MIC (PLUGIN POWER) jack. Use a stereo microphoneECM-717, ECM-MS907 or ECM-MS957,etc., not supplied). The recording level isadjusted automatically, though you canadjust manually as well.
1 Select the input level with the MICSENS (Mic sensitivity) switch.Usually, set it to HIGH. When yourecord loud sound such as a liveconcert, set it to LOW.
2 Insert a recordable MD.Slide the OPEN switch to open the lid,insert a recordable MD, and close thelid.
3 Press and slide the REC switch to theright.“REC” lights up and recording starts.

Recording through analoginput (Analog recording)

When recording from a radio or a record,connect analogically (page 75) and recordas follows. Be sure to adjust recording levelmanually.
1 Insert a recordable MD.2 Set INPUT to ANALOG.3 Select the point to start recording.
If you want to record form the end ofthe previous recording, press ENDSEARCH.
4 While holding down P, press andslide REC to the right.
5 Play the source.6 Observe the level meter in the display
and adjust the recording level withREC LEVEL. Set the level to around 12(-12dB) at average input level.
7 Press P again to start recording.
NoteNote that REC LEVEL is effective even duringrecording; adjusting it will change recordinglevel.
Setting the clock to stamp therecorded time
See the illustrations in the Japanese text(page 22).
To stamp the date and time on the MDwhen you record, you need to set the clock.You can set the clock either from thedetached recorder, or from the stationwhen the recorder is attached.
1 Press CLOCK SET button at the rear ofthe station with a pointed object. Thedigits of the year flash.
2 Enter the current year by pressing  orµ.To change the digits rapidly, keeppressing  or µ.
3 Press m to enter.The digit of the month flashes.
4 Repeat steps 2 and 3 to enter thecurrent month, date, hour, and minute.After you press TITLE/ENTER to setthe minutes, the clock starts operating.
If you made a mistake whilesetting the clockPress p button and repeat the steps above.Press m to locate necessary digits to bechanged.
To set the clock on the recorderThe procedure is the same as in setting theclock on the station. Press CLOCK SET atthe bottom of the recorder so that the digitof the year flashes. Change the numberwith = or +, and enter with (.When you press ( to enter the minute,the clock starts operating.If you attach the recorder to the stationafter you have set the clock on the recorder,the clock on the station will besynchronized automatically.

To display the time in the 24-hoursystemPress the DISPLAY button while settingthe clock. To change the clock to the 12-hour system, press DISPLAY again.
Charging the built-in battery for theclockWhen you are using the recorder for the firsttime or after a long period of disuse, chargethe built-in battery for the clock.After setting the clock, leave the recorderattached to the station for about 2 hours tocharge the built-in battery. Once charged, thebuilt-in battery will last for about a monthwithout being connected to any of the powersources. The recorder will automaticallycharge the built-in battery while operating onthe station, a rechargeable battery or drybatteries.

Notes• When you press p after erasing track marks,
"TOC EDIT" flashes for about a second. Donot move or jog the recorder or disconnectthe power source while the indication isflashing.
• You cannot erase track marks on an MD withthe tab open for protection. Before erasingtrack marks, close the tab at the side of theMD.
Erasing a track (ERASE)

You can erase a recorded track. Make sureof the track you are erasing.
1 Play the track you want to erase.2 Press the ERASE/DELETE button
while playing the track."Erase OK?“ and “Push Enter” appearin the display, and the recorder playsthe selected track repeatedly. Checkthe track number in the display.To cancel erasing, press p.
3 Press the TITLE/ENTER button againto erase the track.The track is erased from the MD andthe remaining tracks are renumbered.The recorder starts to play thesucceeding track.
To erase a part of a trackAdd track marks at the beginning and theend of the part you want to erase, thenerase the part.
Erasing a whole disc

You can erase all the tracks on a disc at atime. Be sure to check the contents of thedisc you want to erase.
1 Press p to stop.2 While pressing the ERASE/DELETE
button, slide the REC switch to theright.“All Erase OK?” and “Push Enter”appear in the display.Make sure it is the right disc to beerased.To cancel erasing, press p.
3 Press the TITLE/ENTER button.“TOC EDIT” flashes in the display.When erasing is complete, “BLANKDISC” appears.
Insert a track mark (TRACKMARK ON)

You can insert a track mark into a track.
1 While playing or pausing an MD, pressTRACK MARK on the station at thepoint you want to add a mark.”Rehearsal” will light up and ”TrackMark ON OK?” and ”Push Enter” willappear. A four second segment will beplayed repeatedly. Press the cursorbuttons to adjust the point to be mark.It can be moved forward or backwardsup to eight seconds, in 0.06 secondsteps.To cancel erasing, press p.
2 Press TITLE/ENTER.”Track Mark ON” will be displayed.A track mark is added and the portionafter the mark will be counted as anew track.

Moving recorded tracks(MOVE)

You can change the order of the recordedtracks.

Labeling recordings (TITLE)
See the illustration in the Japanese text(page 32).
You can label the MDs and tracks yourecorded with letters, numbers, and marks.Each label can be made up of up to 200characters, and each MD can include up toabout 1700 characters.1 To label a track, play the track you

2 Press the TITLE/ENTER button on therecorder. A set of characters appearson the display. To select a different setof characters, press the CAPS button tochange the display. Each time youpress this button the display changesin the order of katakana characters,English letters, symbols and numbers,and title samples.
To insert a track mark on therecorderPress T MARK during playback or pause atthe point you want to add a mark. Thetrack mark will be added where youpressed the button.
You can insert the track number whilerecording.Press TRACK MARK button while recording.
Erasing a track mark (TRACKMARK OFF)

When you record with analog (line) input,unnecessary track marks may be recordedwhere the recording level is low. You canerase a track mark to combine the tracksbefore and after the track mark.
1 While playing the track with the trackmark you want to erase, press P topause.
2 Find the track mark you want to eraseby pressing = slightly."00:00" flashes in the display.
3 Press the TRACK MARK button.”Rehearsal” will light up and ”TrackMark OFF OK?” and ”Push Enter” willappear. A four second segment will beplayed repeatedly.To cancel erasing, press p.
4 Press TITLE/ENTER.”Track Mark OFF” will be displayed.The track mark is erased and the twotracks are combined. The number ofthe newly combined track will be thatof the first track. The succeeding trackswill be renumbered.

Recording/playing with atimer

You can start recording or playback at apreset time using an audio-timer(optional).
1 Plug in the AC power adaptor of thestation to the audio-timer (optional).
2 Adjust recording level manually andpress p if recording through analoginput (steps 4 to 6 of ”Recordingthrough analog input”, page 69).
3 Set TIMER to ”REC” or ”PLAY”.To start recording at the preset time:select ”REC”Recording will start automatically afterthe part that is already recorded in theMD.To start playback at the preset time:select ”PLAY”
4 Set the time on the audio-timer andturn the power off.The power of the audio-timer will turnon automatically at the preset time,which will then turn on the station.
Notes•To record monaurally using an audio-timer,
press MODE for 2 seconds or more after step3. The timer recording preferences will bedisplayed. If the recording mode is in”Stereo”, press MODE so that it changes to”Monaural”.
•If you are using the station for the first timeor using the station after a long period ofdisuse, be sure to charge the built-in backupbattery of the station. The recorder uses thisbackup battery when it writes TOCinformation after the timed recording iscomplete and the power is turned off. Tocharge the built-in battery, connect the ACpower adaptor to the station. Full chargingtakes about 10 hours. The battery will last forabout a week; do not set the timer to startrecording in more than a week.

Using the recorder on alithium ion rechargeablebattery

You can charge the LIP-8 lithium ionrechargeable battery (supplied) on therecorder.
1 Connect the station to an electicaloutlet.
2 Insert the LIP-8 to the recorder andclose the lid.
3 Attach the recorder to the station.The battery will charge whether thepower is on or off.Full charging take about 3 hours.
To charge the battery with the recorderdetached1 Slide the OPEN switch at the side of
the station to open the lid.2 Insert the battery and close the lid.
When charging is completed, theCHARGE lamp goes out.
Using the recorder on drybatteries/nickel metal hydriderechargeable battery

Before using a nickel metal hydriderechargeable battery, you must charge it.
1 Attach the supplied battery case.2 Insert two LR6 (size AA) dry batteries
or a nickel metal hydride rechargeablebattery.

When to replace the batteriesWhen the dry batteries or rechargeablebattery are weak, i flashes in the displayof the recorder and ”LoBATT” appears inthe display of the remote control. Replacethe dry batteries or charge the rechargeablebattery.

Error messages
If the recorder cannot carry out anoperation, error messages may flash in thedisplay window as follows. The words inparentheses are the messages that appearon the display window of the headphone'sremote control.
BLANK DISC (BLANK):You tried to play or edit an MD withno recording on it.
CONNECTION ERROR (–):The recorder is not attached to thestation correctly.
DISC ERROR (ERROR):The recorder cannot read the MD (it isscratched or dirty). Reinsert the MD. Ifthe same message still appears, replacethe MD.
DISC FULL (FULL):There is no more space on the MD (lessthan 12 seconds available).
EDIT BUSY (BUSY):You tried to operate the recorder whileit was accessing the recorded data.Wait until the message goes out (inrare cases, it may take 2-3 minutes).
– (LoBATT):The rechargeable battery or drybatteries are weak. Charge therechargeable battery or replace the drybatteries.
MEMORY OVER (MEMORY):You tried to record when there is noindication in the display, with therecorder placed where it receivescontinuous vibration. Put the recorderon a stable place, and start recordingagain.
NAME FULL (–)You tried to enter more than 200characters for a track or disc name, orthe total characters entered in the MDexceeded the limit (about 1700). Enterthe characters within the limit.
NO DIGITAL SIGNAL (–):The recorder could not detect digitalinput signals. Make sure that thesource is connected firmly.
NO DISC (NoDISC):You tried to play or record with nodisc in the recorder.
P/B ONLY (PbONLY):You tried to record or edit on apremastered MD (P/B meansplayback).
PROTECTED DISC (SAVED):You tried to record or edit on an MDwith its tab in the record-protectposition.
PROTECTED TRACK (TrPROT):You tried to record over or edit a trackwhich has been protected from beingrecorded over. 1)
SCMS NO COPY (–):You tried to make a copy from a discthat is protected by the Serial CopyManagement System. You cannotmake copies from a digitally connectedsource which was itself recorded usinga digital connection. Use the analogconnection instead.
SORRY (SORRY):You tried to erase a track mark whileplaying the MD or at the beginning ofthe first track.You tried to erase a track mark tocombine tracks the recorder cannotcombine. 2)
TEMPERATURE OVER (TEMP):Heat has built up in the recorder. Waituntil the recorder cools down.
TRACK FULL (TrFULL):There is no more space for new data onthe MD you are editing. Eraseunnecessary tracks.
1) Track-protected MiniDiscs — Some MDrecorders will let you protect individualtracks from being recorded over. Thisrecorder, however, does not offer thisfeature.
2) If you have recorded or erased many timeson the same MD, the data of a single trackmay be scattered throughout the MD.When the data is scattered in groups of lessthan 12 seconds long, the recorder will notbe able to combine the tracks.
