KuswagHigh’s top pupil JeanemeKuhn says she wanted to study

physiotherapy,butdidnotget intotheUniversity of the Free State for thatcourse.

“IamnowstudyingaB.Commandwill attempt to get into the physio-therapy course next year.

“I don’t know why I didn’t get in,I only know that just 34 pupils are

allowed.”She is not the only pupil with

concerns about the selection criteria.Another pupil, who wishes to re-

mainanonymous, saysdespitemeet-

ing all the criteria as far asmarks areconcerned,hewasn’tadmittedtouni-versity to study medicine.

Yet one of his fellow pupils, with amuch loweraggregate,wasadmittedto the course. Several pupils men-tioned they do not understand theselection criteria.

The Durban Univer-sity of Technology(DUT) vice-chancellorand principal ProfessorAhmedBawasaysgoodresultswill certainly se-cureaplace foramatricpupil at DUT.

“It depends on theprogramme the pupilwishes to study, but

generally a pupil with a good degreepass in the NSC exam will be admit-ted.

“Matriculants with an ‘A’ aggre-gate pass, who register at DUT, could

alsoqualifyfora100%re-mission on fees.”

He says every facultyand each programme atDUThasitsowncriteria.

Pupils studying to-wards a national diplo-ma, for instance, need adiploma pass in the NSCexam,while foraBachelorsdegree, pupils need a de-gree pass in the NSC exam.

Thesearethebasicmini-mum requirements it mustbe noted.

A GERMAN investor, OliverFlodman, visited Amanzimtoti andsurroundingareas thisweek to lookinto thepossibility of starting abak-ery at Esisibeni ComprehensiveSchool in Umgababa.

The project was initiatedthrough the Rotary Club of Aman-zimtotiwith links to theRotaryClubof Bremerhaven, Germany.

Local travelandaccommodationwasprovidedbyeThekwiniMunici-pality.

Flodman, who has similar pro-jects in Mozambique and Malawi,also visited the Catholic Mission,Mother of Peace in Illovo which hasa bakery.

“The school, Esisibeni, is veryimpressive. It has great potentialand with the staff, space and sup-port the project looks highly realis-tic,” he says.

According to the investor, theywill concentrate on two productionlines to make the project worth-while.

The first would be to produce abasicproduct—bread—thatwouldbecheaper for localsandthesecondwould be to teach the school bakershow to make European specialities

that would be sold to a supplier atreasonable prices.

EsisibeniComprehensiveprinci-pal Sipho Gumbi says the initiativewill bea lifeline forEsisibeni,whichis a no-fee school.

“We will be able to generate ourown income, and so many of our1 650 pupils are orphans. We alsohavepupils fromMotherof Peace inour school,” he says.

“It will also createmuch-neededjob opportunities in the communitywe serve.”

eThekwini representative SihleDladla says themunicipality has anexisting partnership with Esisibeniand a German investor BeruflicheSchule furr Technik, which provid-ed eight pupils and three teacherswith funding to visit Germany lastyear and who are keen to explorefurtheroptionsandprovidesupportwhere necessary.

Association fights TB>> Tuberculosis kills three million people worldwide every year

KWAZULU-NATAL is the hard-esthitprovincebytuberculosisand HIV/Aids. It is also the

provincewithahugenumberof com-munities indeeprural areas,manyofwhicharebarelyaccessibleinnormalvehicles.

In 2014 theAids andTuberculosisAssociation of KZN (Atbak) gavehealth education to more than138 340 pupils.

Atbak is based in Amanzimtotiand is a non-profit organisation thatcoversareasfromToti toPortEdwardand inland.

“Sadly the current economicclimate has seen many companieswithdrawing their support to needypupils,” says Atbak manager MikeLesar.

Despite efforts to combat tubercu-losis, the disease is on the increase.

“eThekwini has the highest rateper capita of any city in the world,”Lesar says.

According to statistics 38% ofpeople working with TB patientsworldwide got TB last year with twoAtbak staff members contracting TBin 2014.

“Oneof thebiggest challenges is totry to desensitise the community not

to run away when they see facemasks, as they fear itmight be ebola.

“Ebola has killed around 10 000people since March last year and theworld is hyper about that, yet TBkillsabout threemillionpeople everyyearandnoonepaysanyattention to that.

“The fact that TB is the greatestkiller of the millions living with HIV/Aidsmeanslittle tothemajorityofourpopulation,” Lesar says.

“It ismyhope the governmentwillsee that the World Health Organisa-tion’s system of directly observedtreatment, short-course [Dots] as thebest possible practice, is in fact intheirwords “the onlyway” to combat

TB and provide NGOs with financialassistance to train Dot volunteers.

“This was an initiative by Rotary,initiallysupportedbythegovernmentin 1998, butwhich failed once volun-teers were provided with stipends.

“Thesystemcollapsedwhenfund-ing dried up a year later,” Lesar says.

Last year Atbak trained 445peopleasDotsupporters,130ofthesewerecommunitycaregivers fromtheDepartmentofHealth.AtbakDotsup-porters assisted 117 TB patients tocomplete their treatment.

Several attempts to report the issue bya community member were initiallyunsuccessful because eThekwini later onindicated that the complaints phonenumber had changed, but it was unable toclose the number, which rings continually,

unanswered.Once the complainant got the correct

number and after having obtained tworeference numbers, the complainant isstill waiting for the problem to be attendedto.

“Each year we grow the school byone grade,” Iris Canham, generalmanager says. This year they addedGrade 5 and are in need of stationeryfor the school as well as for thechildren inhigher gradeswhoattendsurrounding area schools.

“Two of our pupils completedmatric last year and both are keen tostudy but we do not have the resour-ces.TheonepupilachievedaBaggre-gate and is looking to study account-ingorB.Comm.Theotherpupil isout-standing in technical drawing andhopestofollowacareeringraphicde-sign or film-making,” Canham says,in an appeal for assistance.

“Mother of Peace is also starting acraft studio to assist the many chil-drenwith special needs at the facilityand donations in the form of beads,wool, drawing pencils, paint, clay,

material,etc.willgoalongway.Theseactivities are therapeutic and heal-ing.”

Craft items are sold in the shop onthe premises.

“One of our Dutch volunteers,MalloriePfaff, had the ideaofmakingmaterial elephants, among otheritems, evenbefore she got here. I toldher the significance of the elephant,that an elephant never abandons a

itjustseemedsofittingtomakethem,”Canham says.

The organisation runs a volunteerprogramme with a Dutch group, butis currently between services.

Anyone interested involunteeringcan contact Canham as Mother ofPeace is are in dire need of volun-teers who can teach speech therapy,karate or soccer.

WILMA OLIVIER started the Amanzim­toti Tyson Properties branch in Novem­ber 2008. Having little experience inthe estate market and buying the busi­ness during the recession, the writingwas on the wall “so to speak”.

However, Olivier is a determinedand driven person.

“Once I set a goal for myself, I worktowards it,” she says.

Tyson’s is one of the top estatedealerships locally. Olivier’s drive tosucceed is evident from her bank careerwhen she set her eye on becoming acredit manager and after a few courseseliminated contenders. She becamethe first female bank manager at Absain KwaZulu­Natal.

Olivier attributes her success in theestate market to the network she builtin the banking industry over 23 years.

“People knew me well as I used tomanage the Montclair, the [formerLouis Botha] airport, Scottburgh, Totiand Kingsburgh branches of Absa andI was very involved with the schools,rugby clubs and the sakekamer in Toti.

“The way in which the rules andstandards of the Tyson franchise hasbeen set also contributed to mysuccess,” Olivier says.

She started small with four agentsand currently has 22 agents and staff.She was assisted by her husband, who

has his own business, but who assistedlike a partner.

“I don’t allow people to stand in myway. My daughter is just as determinedand is a litigation attorney, while myson is my client manager.”

She loves nature and enjoys beingoutdoors. Her philosophy is to be ahappy person from within, and oneshould have goals, be honest andsincere and treat people in the samemanner as you would like to be treated,she says.

She recommends setting asidetime for the important things in life —family.

Her advice, if you are planning onbuying or selling through an agent, isto make sure they have a Fidelity FundCertificate. She thanks her staff, fami­ly, head office and clients for helpingher attain what she has achieved.

TheDetroitMotorShowsawmanyof the classic colours — reds forPorschesandothersportscars—anda few less conventional (a NissanTitan pick-up truck decked out in“forged copper”).

But there was no mistaking thepre-eminence of white. Particularlyat the Volkswagen stand, whereseveral cars, the stairs and much ofthe furniture was white.

In a multibillion-dollar industry,

nothing is put to chance and nothingis done by mistake.

Susan Lampinen, chief designer,colours and materials, at Ford, saidthecolourwassocrucial tosomepeo-ple that they would buy a car purely

because of that—nevermind the de-sign of the vehicle.

Lampinen identified an Appleripple effect in propelling white to abest-seller worldwide for Ford.

“White is clean, technical,modern. So most cars look good inwhite,” she said, adding other popu-lar colours included blacks and sil-vers, while blue is also on the up.

Lampinen identified only “slightdifferences” in preferences in differ-ent countries because, she said, ofglobalisation. Environment, cultureand climate can all effectwhat colourcar someone might buy, she said.

WHEN it came to the attention ofLindani Sikhakhane that manypeople involved in accidents do nothave driver’s licences, he decided todo something about it and startedLindani Driver Training in 2010.

“I realised that many of the driv-ers were uneducated and I thoughtmaybe we could save a few lives bygiving more people access to a driv-ing school,” he said.

His driving school has since be-come one of the leading drivingschools in the area.

“Weare the first driving school toteach people how to do their

learner’s driving certificate on com-puter, likeat the testing centre,mak-ing it easier for themtopass.Wealsousecarswithpowersteeringtomakeit easier for first-time drivers,”Sikhakhane says.

Fury Ford Toti motor dealershipwanted to assist Sikhakhane in hiscause and last week donated a newFord Figo 1.4 Ambiente to the driv-ing school.

“Fury Ford is a Johannesburg-basedcompanywithanational foot-print, which we hope to expand.

“Wesponsoredthevehicleaspartof ourBEE responsibility,” said Chil-ton Penery, dealer principal.

TheFigoisalightandfuelefficientvehicle, ideal for first-time car buy-

ers between the ages of 20 and 25and sells for around R150 000.

“Fuel efficiency is also the kind ofthing that will reduce operatingcosts for driving schools likeLindani’s,” he says.

Recognising that there is some-timesabacklog at the testing centre,and learnershave towaita long timebetween completing their learner’slicence to completing their driver’slicence, Sikhakhane says with thenew vehicle his driving school willbe able to speed up this process forlearner drivers.

LindaniDriverTrainingcurrentlygives lessons for up to 25 learnerdrivers a day and about 30 drivers aday.

FORMERKingswayHighpupilLindoNgobesehas been selected to join the Sharks RugbyAcademy this year.

“I am studying sports science at the acade-my, somydaystartswith lectures.Thenwedoconditioninginthegymorhaverugbypracticethen it is afternoon training. OnMondays andWednesdayswegohome.TuesdayandThurs-day afternoon we play club rugby and on Fri-day and Saturdaywe playmatches,” Ngobesesays.

“The best thing about this change is that Iam going to play rugby professionally. It is aimmense passion which started in Grade 8. IattendedAthlone Park Primary, [but] they didnot offer rugby as a sport, so I played hockeyand soccer. I was serious about hockey andmade theKwaZulu-Natal teamandcontinuedplaying hockey in high school.When I startedplaying rugby, hockey started fading away.”

Ngobese says his selection to the SharksAcademy came as a total surprise.

“We were playing a tournament at PortNatal against pupils fromall over the country.I neverknew therewere scouts for theprovin-cial teams. I played two games and on thesecond day the scouts gave me the option ofjoining Blue Bulls, Sharks or Stellenbosch. Ifilled out forms for all the teams, but I am astrong Blue Bulls supporter.

“The scouts said I’ll have a better choiceplayingwith theSharks.Theycontactedme inOctober. I had to attend fitness drills, to showmy ability and aweek later they toldme I hadbeen accepted,” he says.

Ngobese plays prop or hooker and attrib-utes his success on the field as being a “veryphysical player”.

“Springboks is my dream — it will be theultimate.”

He admires Springbok Duane Vermeulen.“He plays a very physical game and is the

best in theworld—agoodleaderwhodoesev-erythingperfect inamatch.Hecanchangethegame by himself.”
