It takes a villageAS soontobe parents, some of you
may have attended a prescribed prenatal class but how many of you
took parenting skills classes?Parenting is a demanding job, and re
quires a great deal of knowledge before itgets easier. Think about how you wereraised, some things were great but somethings fell short and left you frustrated andunprepared. You have a responsibility to
your child to make changes and improve onthe way you will raise your children andfamily.
Start by realising you need, want andbelieve you can change. Open your mind toa new way of thinking, change your habitsand leave the past behind you. Ask for helpand advice from friends and family, it takesa village to raise a child and you don’t haveto do it all by yourself. Having a support sys
tem you can count on to help you as a parent is vital.
For some it is a spouse, grandparents orsiblings and for others its neighbours, churches, community organisations andfriends.Asaparentyouarenotasuperhero, even if your children expect you to be. Justlike your children need rest, nourishmentand encouragement, so do you. A burntout parent is no good for any family. Yoursupport system must be there to give thisdown time, to give you guidance when
needed and help out when you feelstressed and need a break. Asking for helpis what brings a family and communitycloser together, and by allowing other tohelp, you also give them purpose.
Don’t be afraid to fail at a task, thereare no perfect parents, but a good parentwill pick themselves up and try again, until
eventually they succeed moretime than they fail.

New leadership needed at UguTHEfinancialauditofUguDistrictMunicipality isbecominganunre-mitting culture. The continuingpoor state of Ugu’s financial man-agement is a grave concern. Thisis despite thegovernment’s sever-al attempts promulgated as initia-tives to improve local governmentfinancial management as the en-gine necessary for service deliv-ery. These initiatives include, among others, 2014 Clean AuditCampaign, the Local GovernmentTurnaround Strategy and the ap-plicationofSection139of theCon-stitution.
Significant strides have beenmade towards the promise of de-velopmental local government es-pousedintheConstitution,but it iswithouttheshadowofadoubtthatUgu’s finances still face complexchallenges. Of grievous concern isthat Ugu’s financial managementprocessesandsystemsare socha-otic that they have a negative im-pact on good governance, whichaffects service delivery.
The wave of service deliveryprotests and the recent audit out-come is disconcerting. This is at-tributedto,amongothers, the lackof competencies, lack of conse-quences for poor performancesand transgressions, and the slowresponsebypolitical leadership inaddressing the causes of the pooroutcomes. The emphasis shouldshift towards embedding a new
culture that will influence a realchange in the systems that drivemunicipal finances. It is the re-sponsibility of municipal officialsto respect, protect and fulfil socio-economic rights of Ugu communi-ty through prudent managementof municipal financial resources.
A non-negotiable new cultureof municipal finance grounded inprofessionalism, value formoney, respect for customers and theirrights, commitment, responsibili-ty,accountabilityandefficientsys-tems of local government, can as-sistUgutoachievetheobjectsoflo-cal government.
Theshift towardsanewcultureof good governance should bedriven by high-level thinkers andvisionarymunicipalleaderswithaclear strategy. Municipal leader-shipshoulddealwiththechalleng-es,includingthedeficitinfinancialskills. Simply put, the pervasive-nessof themunicipal financialcri-sis in Ugu demands a new cultureand leadership, and a new visionfor conducting the finance busi-ness of the municipality. A newleadership, mayor to be exact, isrequired to turn things aroundandbuild an openopportunity so-ciety for all.

South Coast Academy, serious about sport>> ‘We have our own Usain Bolt here’ OMEGA MOAGI
PREPARATIONS are well under way atSouth Coast Academy as the schoolwill be hosting its annual fun day
swimming gala next month. Event director,G.J Parsons, said it is one of the most important ones on the school calendar. "Wealways encourage pupils to participate, because we believe water safety is very important especially since we are in a coastal
town," said Parsons. He added that the turnout is
always good every year. Lastyear's top swimmer was Soraya
Jeiromio. Other top achieversin sports in 2014 were SerenaGordon (athletics), SaneleSima (soccer), PeachesMhlante (netbal) and headboy Ntokozo Khanyile(athletics). Khanyile alsoparticipated in the Salgagames as well as the KZNchampionships lastyear.
"We have our ownUsain Bolt here," said Prin
cipal E. Hess referring to Khanyile. The school has seen a lot of improve
ment academically since Hess joined in2011, with the matric pass rate making aleap from 53% in 2011 to 99% in 2014. Ithas been through a consistent display ofhard work and team effort of staff thatthese results have been achieved saysHess.
"We received a visit from the Umalusiin 2011 when we were one of the underachieving schools and it identified someweaknesses in our system and advised usaccordingly. Since then our staff has beentacklingthoseissuesviadifferentmethodswhich have proved effective," said Hess.
Also, lined up for Valentine's Day is theprimary school Valentine's Day functionwhere pupils will dress in red and white anda Mr and Ms Valentine's Day will be picked.

Healthy lunch-box ideas for pupilsEARLY mornings are busy in most households, and thetemptation to just give your children tuckshop money is easy. However, it only takes five minutes to packa healthy and nutritious lunch that will keep them fullthroughout the day, help them concentrate duringclass and give them the energy they need for sportsand extramural activities.
Healthy, quick lunchbox ideasFruitA handful of strawberries, a bunch of grapes, a ba
nana, watermelon slices – they’re all fantastic summer fruits. Whatever your child’s favourite fruit is, tryand ensure that they get a few helpings every day.To keep it fun, you can even make fruit sticks – thatway they get to enjoy a variety of fruit in bitesizedpieces.
SandwichesWhole grain or wholewheat bread is better than
white, and if you start your children on eating it froma young age they are less likely to kick up a fuss whenyou make their sandwiches.
You want to avoid anything that’s going to go toosoggy, so stick to peanut butter, a variety of cheeses, tuna, egg or chicken mayonnaise and cold meat suchas ham or salami.
NibblesChildren like to snack, and generally prefer eating
little bits throughout the day, so include fingerfoods such as cherry tomatoes, carrot and cucumbersticks, cheese wedges, mini yoghurts, popcorn and biltong.
Homemade muffinsWhat’s great about muffins is that you can make
a big batch and freeze them in advance. Homemademuffins are a great way to “sneak in” fruit and vegetables such as apples, raisons and carrots. Encourageyour children to get involved in baking at home – theyare much more likely to eat and enjoy something thatthey’ve made themselves.
DrinksRemember to include a couple of drinks with your
child’s lunch. Fruit juice, water and milk (if they areable to keep it cold until lunch time) can all be putinto juice bottles that pack neatly into a lunch box. They’re also available in convenient small cartons, which make them perfect for school.
Avoid giving them soft drinks, as this will only givethem a sugar rush and leave them feeling tired for therest of their classes.

Providing hopeand a chancefor the jobless>> Attitude determines your altitude
IF you are looking for employment or have avacancy, the South Coast Jobs Facebook group isjust for you. With over 8 300 members and about 30 requests
to join every day, the group is growing at a fast paceand members have some very inspiring stories to tell.
A local woman, Diana Rogers, says she started thegroup in 2011 after she was retrenched.
She found it was not very easy to get back intothe jobsearching game and due to being selfdrivenshe managed to get another job not long after herretrenchment.
She then decided that she wanted to help peopleget work as everyone somehow needs a helping hand.
Her solution was to start the group South CoastJobs.
In March 2013, Sue Hulley took over as administrator for the group as Rogers found she had very littletime to manage the page by herself.
“Diana visits from time to time and loves readingthe successes as it makes her feel as though she hassome influence in someone’s life,” said Hulley.
Hulley works fulltime as a bookkeeper for a construction company but has spare time which she dedicates to assisting groups run smoothly.
“My hobby as a researcher gives me the desireand ability to share job vacancies with people,” shesaid.
She added that there are many types of peoplein the group who come from different backgrounds– from desperate school leavers to fulltime adult careerseekerstopensionerslookingtosupplementtheirincome.
“We also had a few scammers in the beginning, which were weeded out quickly,” she said.
Hulley noticed that many members either did nothave a CV or did not know how to go about compilingone, so she posted a template to the group.
“This is available under the files section page ofthe group,” she said.
Job recruitment companies are encouraged to jointhegroupandposttheirvacancies.Privatecompaniesare also welcome to join.
“Wehavealotofindividualbusinessesandrecruitment agencies that advertise on the page. Thank youso much for letting our members know about yourvacancies.”
While some don’t see the need for groups to have
strict rules, Hulley said it helps weed out the “spammers, scammers and troublemakers”.
“I have strict rules to keep the chaos and spamming of the group down to a bare minimum. The ruleof English only needed to be implemented for adminmonitoring,” she said.
Tojointhegroup, go to Facebook and searchSouthCoast Jobs.
Roger’s tips for the unemployed — selfconfidenceis key, looking presentable at an interview makes youmemorable and could get you the job. Using correctgrammar on the site and showing respect to othersare other key tips.
Hulley’s tips: Remember, you are not entitled tohave a job, you have to work hard and prove you areworth working for the company that offers you a job.Attitude determines your altitude.
If you have a positive attitude you have alreadywon half the battle.
Get a CV done and printed and then searchthrough the malls for a job as well as using groupslike this to help you find a job.

How to clean your jewellery
A QUICK Web search will turn up hundreds of differentmethods for cleaning your jewellery, like using toothpaste to make diamonds sparkle, beer to shine goldand tomato sauce to polish silver. These are exactlythe kind of clever tricks you'd love to try.just not onyour own jewellery. So instead of experimenting withgrandma's heirlooms, we talked to the pros to findout how to safely care for your jewellery.
DiamondsThe best way to clean a diamond is with warm
soapy water and a softbristle brush or old toothbrushand pat it dry with a soft cloth. You may have heardthat using toothpaste gets your diamond to sparkle;it's not a great idea. While toothpaste won't harm thediamond,it isabrasiveenoughtoharmthesoftermetals next to the diamond, like silver, so it is not recommended.
GoldAlways remove gold jewellery before showering or
cleaning because soap and chemicals can cause a filmto form on gold, which makes it appear dull and dingy. While there are plenty of commercial cleaners available, it's just as effective to clean gold with what youalready have. For untarnished jewellery, mix a fewdrops of mild dish detergent with warm water, andscrub with a softbristle toothbrush. If it's tarnished, mix a few drops of ammonia into soapy water, submerge the jewelry and carefully brush with a softbristle toothbrush. Rinse it with lukewarm water and allow it to dry. Avoiding chlorine is key to keeping goldjewellery looking good.
Sterling silverSterling silver is a soft metal that can scratch easi
ly. Scrubbing it or using a cloth with even the slightestabrasiveness will harm the surface. Use a silver polishing cloth or a very soft, clean sponge with no residueto polish and get rid of tarnish.
Jewellery with a textured surfaceA brass brush, which can be found in the paint de
partment of a hardware store, with soapy water worksespecially well on textured 14 karat gold jewellery. Thetiny bristles get in the grooved surface to clean. Thebrass metal of the bristles help give it a nice satin polished look. For silver jewellery with an intricate design, use a silvercleaning paste to get into the grooves, andwipe with a soft, clean cloth.
You should clean your turquoise in warm, sudsywater and dry it immediately with a soft cloth. Don'tsubmerge the stone in waterit is very porous and liquids can easily seep in and cause discoloration. Avoidcommercial jewellery cleansers, as they can also discolor the stone.
PearlsBe sure to take off your pearl rings before you apply
hand and body creams. Wipe your pearls with a soft, lintfree cloth as soon as you take them off. The clothcan be dampened with water or it can be dry. If damp, allow the pearls to air dry before putting them away.Dirty pearls can be cleaned with a mild soap and watersolution. Never clean your pearls with solutions thatcontain ammonia or harsh detergents.

Hassle-free poolcleaning tips
>> Remember to keep the water ‘balanced’THE first step is to identify the problem.Stainsinaswimmingpoolcanbecausedby metals in the water or by algae, and

Warmtemperatures,sunlightandthepres-enceofnitratesand/orcarbondioxide-all caneasily create the perfect situation. Of course,alackofpropercirculation,filtrationandsani-tation may be the primary cause of the algae.
Like the weeds in your garden eventuallyovertake when left unattended, algae buildsuptosuchalevelthatisclogsupthefilter-min-imisingfiltereffectivenessandrequiringmorebackwashing. Algae also consumes chlorinethat should be working on other contami-nants.
Black algaeIf youwake up onemorning and find black
algaespotsonthesidesofyourmarbelitepool,it's time to take immediate action. Black algaespots occur in swimming pool water that hasalowfreechlorineleveland/orthepoolchemi-cals are unbalanced. Good circulation is amust!
Becauseblackalgaeisresistanttochlorine, throwing in a couple of cups of chlorine - orevena shockpack -won't haveany effect. Theonly way to get rid of black algae is to use thecorrectchemicals,astiffpoolbrushandalgae-cide.
It's not an easy process to remove black al-gae spots, so be prepared to roll up yoursleeves, slap on some suntan lotion and beready to start brushing loose the algae. Be-cause black algae forms a protective barrieraround itself, you need to brush the affectedareas really hardwith a stiff brush, so that analgaecide can do the job.
Once all the black algae has been brushedoff, pour algaecide into the pool; leaving thepumpoffovernight,orasspecifiedbytheman-ufacturer.

Common treatment:. Test thepHof yourwaterandadjust tobe-

the algae infested area. Black algae builds upa protective slimy coating, so youmayneed tobe quite a bit of brushing.

Dark brown or yellow stainsStains that appear light tan (mustard), red-
dishbrownorbluish-blackare typically relat-ed to metals in your pool water.
You can confirm this by brushing the stainwithastiffbrush. If thestainishardtoremove, chances are it is metal stains. Themetals thatcommonly cause pool stains are iron,manga-neseandcopper.Copperwill result inblue, al-most black stains, while iron results in rusty, brown or green/brownish stains. If manga-nese is present itwill result in dark brownish/black or purple stains.
Where a pool is filled from a borehole it'sagood idea to takeasampleofyourpoolwaterto have it tested for metals and it is essentialto useMetal Remover regularlywhen toppingup a pool, becausemetal stains can be almostimpossible to remove.
Ifyoubelieveyourstain isrelatedtometals,or if the suggestions above for organic poolstains do not lighten or improve the stain, youshouldpurchaseanatural ascorbicacid (Vita-min C) based pool product. When applied di-rectly to the stain, these powerful pool chemi-cals will almost instantly remove the stainfrom the pool surface.
During the windy seasons and summer storms, algae spores contaminate a pool, driven bywind and rain.
Renovating?Adjust yourinsurance policyIT’S finally time to renovate your kitchen, andyou’re ready to knock a hole in the wall, rip outthe old cupboards and build the kitchen of yourdreams. But before you call up a contractor, con-sider how these renovations will affect your in-surance needs, both during and after renova-tions.
For many homeowners their dream home isjust a renovation away, but before starting a bigproject, make sure you are covered for potentialdamages. For example, will you be covered ifsomeone is injuredwhileworking inyourhome?
Nolwazi Nzama, head of Affordable HousingatStandardBank,saysmosthomeinsurancepol-icies require that you insure your home for up toabout80%of its replacementvalue.And,accord-ing to experts, renovations raise a home’s valueby more than 20%.
“Ifyourrenovationsmakeyourhouseadreamhome, youmay need to raise the amount of yourinsurancepolicy to show this change, otherwise, you could be stuck with a big chunk of the bill ifafireorotherdisasterforcesyoutomakeaclaim.”
While insurance might seem like a hassle topay for, it can help you save thousands of rands, especially when issues arise and you see totalcostingsthatyoumighthavehadtoforkoutother-wise.
Apart from the increase in yourhome’s value, renovating affects your insurance policies.
When renovating consider the following:1. Homeowner’s insurance covers the build-
ing materials that will pile up before you beginwork. However, ifafirestruckanddestroyedbothyourhomeand thebuildingmaterials, youmightnot be covered for the full extent of the damages, unless you have informed the insurance compa-ny that you were building.
2.Ifyouhireacontractor,askhimifhehasade-quate insurance coverage for hisworkers beforethe work begins. He should provide proof of in-surance in the form of a ‘certificate of coverage’incasehisworkersgethurtonthe job. Ifaworkeris injured in your home and the contractor doesnot carry workers’ compensation, you could besued and your insurance will not cover this cost.
3. Contractors’ liability insurance covers thecontractor for damage to your property duringrenovations. If, for example, there’s a big hole inan outside wall and the contractor fails to coveritproperly, watercouldleakinduringarainstormand cause major damage.
Though homeowner’s insurance will coverthesedamages, your insurancecompanywill ex-pect the contractor’s insurance company to pickup the tab if you make such a claim.
4. For those who would prefer to do renova-tions themselves, the insurance requirementsdepend on who’s helping you and whether youare paying them for their help. A friend or familymemberwho’s injuredwhile lending a hand canhave his or her medical bills covered by yourhomeowner’s policy.
However, hiring a subcontractor or payingsomeone to help you makes you an employer, whichmeans youmust purchase workers’ com-pensation to cover you in case someonegetshurton your property.
5.Knowwhoisresponsible foruninstalledap-pliances and other items, such as carpets andcabinets, in advance. Your contractor’s insur-ance should cover these items.
It’s importanttonotethatveryfewcontractorshave contractors’ liability insurance orworkers’ compensation, so you need to get asmuchcoveragefromyourowninsurancecompa-ny as possible before you start with any renova-tions.
“Whileitmightbecheaper to use theguy referred by afriend of a friend, getting a reputableand accreditedbuilder will protectcustomers in thelong run and ensuretheir asset is still ofthe rightand insura-ble quality, reducingthe risk of repudiat-edclaims,”saysNza-ma.

The right tool for the job>> Discuss your project with a hardware store professional
IF you’re a fan of the do-it-yourselfprogrammes on the Home Chan-nel, you’ve seen how the profes-
sionals manage to make it look soeasy. And for them it is. They haveeverything they could possibly re-quire at their fingertips; when theyundertakeaprojecttheyhavespecial-ised tools thatdo thework; theyknowwhich tools are right for the job andhow to use them. But for the averagehomeowner who doesn’t want, orneed, to invest in expensive tools, theeasysolutionto thisproblemis tohirespecialist equipment.
Most equipment hire stores carrya wide range of tools as used by thepros and they also have staff on handto explain how to use them, whichmeans that you can practice beforeyou take it home–without damage toyourself, your house or the tool.
To get your money’s worth out ofbuyingaspecialtytool, thereareafewthings you should consider:
Bydiscussingyourprojectwiththehardware store professional, youmay well discover that the tool youhad inmind is not in fact the best toolfor that particular task. Tell the per-son helping youwhat youwant to ac-
complish rather than what tool youwant to buy. The information theseprofessionals provide is invaluable –so not only do you rent well-main-tainedequipment,butyourent itwiththe security of knowing you’re doingit the bestway possible. Once you de-cide on a tool, they’ll teach you howto use it safely. Plus, they’ll give in-struction on project preparation be-fore taking thetool home.
Here aresome examplesof tool possibili-ties you can useand the knowl-edge you’ll get atan equipmenthire store:
Nail gunIf you’re planning to install parti-
tionwalling, make a trellis, or under-take DIY projects in and around thehome, a nail gun makes fastening abreeze. Nail guns drive nails muchfaster and set thenails below the sur-face so the nails are ready for filling.
Plate compactor
For large areas of paving a platecompactor–alsoknownasawhacker–isessentialforensuringthatthepav-ing bricks are firmly bedded on thesubstrate (surface),andthebetter thepreparation, the better the projectandthelonger itwill last.Aplatecom-pactor isused tocompact thedugout, eachbase layer, andonthe laidbricksto level the surface and compact the
sand course between the bricks.
Angle grinderWhen laying stone or cement-
based tiles you will need an anglegrinder to cut through the thicknessof these tiles. Where there is a largeamountofcutting tobedone,awater-cooled diamond cutter should be
used, which will make the job mucheasier, and leave a very clean cut. Forsmaller projects tiles can also be cutusingananglegrinder; thismayleavearoughedgebut is ideal if curvedcutsare needed.
Mitre sawFor skirting, moulding and cor-
nice, amitresawtakestheguessworkout of angles and makes cutting intocorners easy. Mitre cuts are typicallycut at a 45-degree angle. Formanual
cutting onewouldnormallyuse a mitre boxand saw, whichrequires accu-ratecuttingandmeasuring toensure that theangled cornersmeet perfectly. But the down-side of manual
cutting is that amitre box only allowsthecuttingofeithera45-or90-degreeangle, so unless your walls are 100%squareyouranglesarenotgoingtobeguaranteed. A mitre saw allows forfine adjustments and tapered cutsthat are often necessary for perfectmitre joints.
Floor sanderWherehardwoodfloorsneedtobe
refinished, adrumsandergivesfloorsa perfectly smooth surface for a pro-fessional finish that only requiressealing or varnishing. In drum sand-ers thesandpaper ismountedonacy-lindrical drum that rotates on an axisparallel to the plane of the floor. Thusthesandpaperremovesthesurfaceinstraight linesinthedirectionofmove-ment of the machine.
When sanding with a belt sanderyoubeginwithcoarsesandpaperandfinish with finer sandpaper, whichensures that any roughness is re-moved for a smooth surface that isready for the finish.
Cement mixerMixing cement by hand is time-
consumingandhardwork. It canalsobe impossible if youdon’t havea suit-able space. Hiring a cement mixer isvery useful for those larger buildingprojects in and around the home.Fairly easy to operate, it’s simply amatter of switching on the unit andadding thematerial forcement that isready to throw as a foundation forbrickwork or paving.
Hiring equipment is the smart, professionalwaytoget thingsdone inand around the home. - Property24

IT is 2015, almost 1 800 yearsafter the first Valentine’s Daywas observed. While most peo-
ple on social networks say they nolonger care about nor celebrate val-entine’s day, the holiday is still oneof the most celebrated.
“Valentine’s Day is huge on theSouth Coast every year peoplecome out in their numbers tobuy gifts for their loved ones,”said Oribi Plaza Clicks store man-ager, Pamella Dube, who encour-aged customers to do no differentthis year as the store has manyawesome promotions on offer.
There is a variety of ways thatthis has been done on that special
day of 14 February. Even throughfortune cookies as has been fea-tured in the Fever in previousyears.
One could make personalisedfortune cookies for their loved onesby writing down a heart-felt mes-sage in place of a fortune tell forthe cookie.
Other innovative ways to cele-brate the day include penning itdown, move away from the elec-tronic age and write your loved onea love letter on paper in your im-perfect hand writing.
Some couples even go the extramile and go the ink route by gettingtheir names tattooed on each other.Or simply go for a drive togetherand explore your vicinity in a
whole different way. Above allthough, as it is true for most lovenotions, spontaneity is the best ro-mance. And if you’re not in a rela-tionship or your partner is one ofthose that “don’t believe in Valen-tine’s Day” (read: don’t want tospend money on it) you could gettogether with some friends, throwan anti-love party, get drunk andcall your crush.
Or if you’re such a non-believerthe very day just generally puts youoff the human race as a whole youcould spend the day pamperingyour pet. Share a meal with yourgoldfish.
There are many creative ways to express your love this Valentine’s Day.
Propose on Valentine’s Day
VALENTINES’S Day you either love itoryouloatheit, andyetthere’snodenying its romantic appeal.
Of course, love and romance issomething that should be celebratedevery day, but wouldn’t you find it thrilling if your partner went all out to surprise and lavish you on the day.
Soboys, don’twriteoffVDayasjustanother marketing ploy, proposing toyour girlfriend on this day could proveto be the best decision you’ve made.
Reasons to proposeIt’s romantic. There really is noth
ing more romantic than showing yourpartner just how much of a lovestrucksofty you are.
She’ll adore you for it and what’smore heartfelt than seeing her eyes fullof happy tears and love for you.
Sharing the joy with other couples. Love is a universal feeling that isbetter when it is felt and shared by other couples especially if you’re planning
to propose in a public place. Also, while you’re not doing this for
the public’s approval, you can’t denyhow awesome it feels when strangersaround you start breaking out in applause.
The mood and ambience has already been set. Make sure the rightmusic is played, bring out the champagne and couple it with a desserts togo with the ring.
She’ll never forget the date youproposed. Neither will you actually. Ifyou’re one of those couples that celebrate a variety of anniversaries, thenValentine’s Day is just one less day foryou to remember.
More venue options to choosefrom. It’s midsummer now, so yourchoice of venues to propose are morevaried than in winter. From the beach,to picnics you’re good to go when itcomes to choosing the perfect spot topropose. Women24.

1. TheAstrology claims thatwhenyou are born while the Sun is in oneof the 12 zodiacal constellations thisis your star sign and you are influ-encedby it.That'sbasedonthemedi-evalconceptthatthefoetusisgrowinglike vegetable, and becomes a livingbeing only at birth. Though your lifeformally starts when you breathe forthe first time, no one denies that thefoetus is alive in themother's womb.If the heavenly bodies exercise sucha big influence on us when we areborn, what prevents them to influ-ence uswhile in themother'swomb? If there is such an influence, it shouldstart at the moment of inception, notof birth!
2. The astrology adopts the oldPtolemaic Geocentric System. Ptole-my believed that the Earth is in thecenterandthatall isrevolvingaroundthe Earth. As we all know the Earthis rotating around the Sun, not viceversa.ThiswasdiscoveredbyCoper-nicusand is calledHeliocentrical sys-tem. Giordano Brunowas burned onthe stake alive as heretic because heclaimed that the Earth is rotatingaround the Sun. Afraid that he maytalk while on the stake, they tore offhis tongue before his execution. Histongue however, never stopped talk-ing through the ages!
3. Astrological predictions andschemes include Pluto as 9th planet, discovered in 1930. After the rapiddiscovery of dozens of planets in theKuiper belt after 2000, Pluto, beingsmaller thanourMoon, was justlyde-moted from a status of a planet in2006,becauseifPlutoisaplanet,thenthe bigger planets for example Eris, discovered in2005are evenmore so.Erisandtheotherplanetsdon't figurein the astrological predictions
though.4. The Ptolemaic universe ends
with the "Sphere of the immovablestars" which is put there as on ascreen - just as we see them.
The problem is that the stars arenotat thesamedistance -as they looklike when we see them. For exampletake the constellation Scorpio - itlooks like all the stars forming itsshapeareat theequaldistance- inre-ality theyarenot. If the stars reallyaf-fect us in some unknownmysteriouswaysurely theonesnearuswill affect
usmorethantheonesfurtherfromus. This will reshape the zodiacal con-stellations completely.
5. Ptolemycorrectlymeasured theprojection of the Sun on the zodiacalconstellations. Today's astrologersfollowstill his system - theproblem isthat due to the change of the orienta-tionof theEarth's axis, calledpreces-sion, the times when the Sun entersthe borders of the constellations arequite different than 1900 years ago,whenPtolemydidit.6.It isimpossiblethat 1/12 of the population of the
Earth will have the same charactertraitsbecauseofbeingbornunderthesame sign. This is 600 000 000 peo-ple!Andisnotclearatallhowthesup-posed influence of the stars works.
What part of them influences us -the gravitation or the electromagnet-icradiation(thisincludesvisiblelight)- this is allwhatweget fromtheheav-enly bodies - and how? Many objectsappear visible only in beyond visiblelight spectrum, (e.g. radio, infrared, ultraviolet, x-rays, gamma rays) butthey donot appear in the astrological
predictions.7. It is true that some astrological
predictions come true, they are gen-eral. No astrologer predicts that to-morrow wings will grow from yourback or youwill become a camel. Butthere is a huge asymmetry betweenwhat is fulfilled and what is not ful-filled.
Small part only is fulfilled, whilethebiggestpartisnot.Becausepeoplewant to believe that, they ignore thisasymmetry.
In real life however, if they have afriendwho tells the truth only 2 timesout of 100 and 98 times he talks liesthey won't consider him as theirfriend. Strange inconsistency!
8. Why people want to believe insuch absurdity? Not because of thereal impact of the starsandplanets inour lives, (ifyouaskthemveryfewareeven able to name the planets in or-der) but because they want to avoidresponsibility for their actions. If theheavenly bodies are responsible forourcharacter,wewon'thaveamoral-ly responsible behaviour.
9.Theastrologyfollowstheoldpa-gan systemof deifying heavenly bod-ies-thepagansstill todayworshipthesun and the moon and the stars. Allthe planets are named on the Greekgods (with Romanized names) - inwhich nobody believes today.
10 The astrology robs the man ofhis connection with God, by turninghim away from his real Friend, whodiedforus-JesusChristandwholivestoday to support our lives and to careforus, andonedayistocomeandtakeuswhereHe is - in theparadise, to theunknown influence (as they claim) ofthe heavenly bodies.
It is the same if your little child hasa birthday cake, but someone comesandeats it upall and thechild'sbirth-day is spoiled. Will you embrace thatperson? So why embrace astrology?
astrology adopts the oldPtolemaic GeocentricSystem.

SHAHID AFRIDIPAKISTAN
AGE 34The veteran allrounder will take on extraresponsibility in a squad missing the offspin of Saeed Ajmal and allrounder Mohammad Hafeez.
Ajmal has withdrawn from the teamwhile Hafeez will not be able to bowl, leaving Afridi to lead the spin attack with hisfast legspinners.
While the focus will be on seam bowlersin Australia and New Zealand, legspinnerscan always benefit from the bounce.Afridiis capable of creating and seizing opportunities and was joint highestwicket takerat the 2011 World Cup with 21 wickets.
A former recordholder for the fastestODI century (37 balls), he has failed tonotch a halfcentury in four previous WorldCups but is the kind of player who can inspire his lineup.
He gave glimpses of his batting withtwo decisive lastover sixes against Indiain last year’s Asia Cup and recently duringa halfcentury against New Zealand.
Afridi, who led Pakistan to the semifinals last time, has announced he willretire from ODIs after the World Cup. —SapaAP.
PHOTO: GALLO IMAGESProteas skipper AB de Villiers is themost feared batsman at this year’sWorld Cup in New Zealand and Australia.
PHOTO: GETTY IMAGESVirat Kohli leads India’s batting andcan change a match when he getsgoing.
PHOTO: GETTY IMAGESLeftarm paceman Mitchell Johnsonwill keep Australia in the hunt, especially on pitches he knows sowell.
PHOTO: GETTYDevastating on his day, New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum isvital to his team’s fortunes andprogress at the tournament.
PHOTO: APPakistan’s Shahid Afridi will want toinspire his team to a repeat of their1992 heroics in New Zealand andAustralia when they won the WorldCup.
AB DE VILLIERSSOUTH AFRICA
AGE 30The South Africa captain is clearly themost feared batsman heading into theWorld Cup. The versatile De Villiers sounded a warning to bowlers as he recorded thefastest ever century in a limitedovers international during a breathtaking 149 from44 deliveries against the West Indies at Johannesburg last month.
De Villiers reached triple figures from 31balls after setting the record for the fastestODI halfcentury in 16 balls. He equalled Indian Rohit Sharma’s record of 16 sixes in anODI innings.
The kind of impact De Villiers can haveis gauged from him walking in to bat in the39th over.
His ability to judge the ball and moveinto position quickly gives him an advantage over other batsmen, particularly withfielding restrictions.
The topranked ODI batsman goes intothe World Cup with two centuries and sixhalfcenturies in his last 11 games.
He can sweep, reversesweep or hit premeditated heaves to the leg side and withsecondranked ODIbatsmanHashimAmlabatting before him, there is every chanceDe Villiers will be able to whack straightaway.
De Villiers, who has 7 459 runs from 179ODIs at an average of over 52, has scoredthree centuries in his two previous WorldCups, including backtoback hundreds in2011.
VIRAT KOHLIINDIA
AGE 26The fact alltime great Viv Richards has described the Indian vicecaptain as “alreadylegendary” is a fair indication of the potential Kohli carries into his second World Cup.
Kohli is a proven performer in all formsof the game, recently notching four centuries in a fourTest series in Australia.
He failed to get into doublefigures infour innings during an ODI triseries afterthe Tests as captain MS Dhoni tinkeredwith the batting order.
Kohli was a youngster at the last WorldCup but still tallied 282 runs including acentury and a halfcentury.
With the likes of the retired Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhirand Yuvraj Singh not around, Kohli is expected to take command of the battinglineup.
He has the ability to dominate bowlingwithout taking risks, which can prove vitalon the pitches of Australia and New Zealand.
Though the team boast twotime ODIdoublecentury maker Rohit Sharma andacclaimed finisher Dhoni in the battinglineup, Kohli remains the vital cog with hisconsistency and ability to blend cautionwith aggression.
Kohli, ranked three among ODI batsmen, has slammed 21 centuries in 150 ODIsat an average of almost 52.
MITCHELL JOHNSONAUSTRALIA
AGE 33Mitchell Johnson is not the type to worrywhen he enters the attack. Be it with thenew ball or first change, the leftarm paceman can change the complexion of a gamewith his blend of express pace and aggression.
He can not only swing the ball late butalso extract sharp bounce and has provenhimself in crunch situations with bat andball in Tests and ODIs.
He was out of action for a month dueto a hamstring injury but returned for a triseries final against England, when histhreewicket burst put Australia on trackfor an easy win.
Home conditions and the aim of regaining the Cup should be incentive enough forJohnson to be at his best.
Johnson, who has 224 wickets and 920runs with a highest score of 73 not out from145 ODIs, will be part of the World Cup forthe third time, though he did not get to playa game in 2007 when Australia won in theWest Indies.
In 2011, he took 10 wickets from sevenmatches, including fourwicket haulsagainst Zimbabwe and New Zealand.
BRENDON MCCULLUMNEW ZEALAND
AGE 33The Black Caps captain could be the bestbatsman on view if he can get close to theform he hit in Tests last year, when hescored more than 1 000 runs.
He became the first New Zealander toscore a Test triplecentury and alsonotched two doublehundreds to join aselect band. He capped the year with 195off 134 balls against Sri Lanka.
Cohosting the World Cup also presentsMcCullum with the opportunity to ensurepeople remember him as much for his ODIefforts as for his Test and T20performances.
McCullum, who also kept wicket untilrecently, is a feared batsmen. His loftedshots, scoops and reversesweeps makehim a tough customer. He is the only playerto have scored two T20 internationalcenturies and also the highest scorer in theformat with 2 105 runs from 70 games.
McCullum averages over 35 in T20s butonly around 30 in ODIs. In three previousWorld Cups, he has 414 runs from 25 gameswith one century.
Cricket World Cup’s ‘Big Five’The Cricket World Cup will be staged in New Zealand and Australia for the first time since 1992, from
February 14 to March 20. With no clearcut favourites, expect to see some clean hitting and highstrike rates in conditions that are expected to give the bat slight advantage over the ball. Alldisciplines considered, these could be the five players to watch as the tournament unfolds.
