parts of Asia• Its traditions and outlook of its people,

and social structure, therefore became very distinctive

• All of Japan belonged to a kind of super-village that shared similar values and traditions

How did Feudalism in Japan begin?

Over time the power of the emperors weakened and they lost control. In the countryside laws were not followed and it became dangerous.

LandLarge landowners began to create their own private armies to protect their farms. To be safe, smaller farmers would give their land to the warlords, known as daimyo, for protection. This began the feudal system.

Samurai

Because there were many wars between the warlords, they wanted to be surrounded by bodyguards. These loyal warriors became known as samurai.

They followed a code of behavior called Bushido which taught them to be brave, fair, generous, and honorable.

Shoguns

Eventually one warlord became powerful enough to be given the title of Shogun, or supreme general- or supreme military commander.

While the Emperor still kept his position, the Shogun actually governed Japan. Emperor was a hereditary position, and became a position to revere, but lost power.

3 Shogun dynasties would rule for the next 600 years. The last Shogun dynasty ruled from 1603-1868.
