H E L L OHere we are – the first issue of fête for 2012. We are

thrilled to see how much celebrating our readers have enjoyed over the past two months.

This issue our simple ideas make Valentine's Day worthy of a revisit, it's really not that hard to spoil each other. We get bored teens out of the house, music to mothers'

We all know the drill – on the average day you race home from work to cook dinner for the family, feed the pets, bathtime,

bedtime stories, homework… it goes on and on. At the end of it all, once it’s all done you may just get a chance to sit down with your significant other, share a glass of wine and collapse

on the couch together. So even if you are not a romantic at heart, why not take just a few minutes to spoil each other, lay out a

beautiful table and reconnect…

Sounds all too hard? We have a foolproof plan for maximum love with minimum effort. All you need is a pre-ordered takeaway meal, a special bottle of bubbles and a quick, easy sparkling

dessert (made with love of course).

I, for one, never get flowers on Valentine’s Day, so I buy my own to avoid disappointment – that way I know I will get my favourites to adorn the table. The whole look can be pulled

together in a mere matter of minutes.

I can’t remember the last time my husband and I celebrated

Valentine's Day. Being busy is no excuse to ignore a chance

to get loved up. Valentine’s Day – amongst all the commercial

overkill – can still be made special and personal.

Keep plans realistic and order in a meal that can wait until you're ready to eat – rushing around to make sure my dinner doesn’t go cold certainly isn’t my idea of relaxation and romance. Sushi is a good choice… it looks great on the plate, it can wait patiently for you until the last little ones are in bed and it’s perfect for a warm February evening.

A pink grapefruit granita is a spectacular and easy dessert – perfect for a balmy, summer's evening. A most cooperative sweet, it can be made days before needed and prepared when everyone's good and ready. Served in Champagne saucers it feels like a real treat.

Valentine’s Day is all about romance after all, so a little note and a decadent treat is the perfect surprise to cap off the night. Why not use this one day in the year to stop for a moment to make each other feel spoiled and special. It’s the perfect opportunity to show your other half that you haven’t lost that twinkle in your eye that you had when you first met. With a night this easy to prepare it may even turn in to a regular date night!

When planning for her little girl’s birthday party, Anni wanted to avoid the typical commercial stereotypes and fast food onslaught. Wholesome organic party food and the prettiest, vintage details

were a unique combination for Odette’s special day.

Reminiscent of her own parties in the 70s, Anni, with some help from Rosebud Designs, created an old-fashioned vintage dress-up tea party. So vintage in fact that Odette’s party dress belonged to

her mum when she was a little girl.

The party was every little girl’s dress-up dream in vintage hues of cream, green, pink and blue – proof that children will love

something unique to them, all it takes is a great idea.

Trying to avoid the character-themed dress-ups of today, Anni encouraged mums to find some old-fashioned props. It was all about big shoes, voluminous hats and glamorous costume jewels. The mums did a fabulous job finding long-forgotten treasures in their wardrobes and scouring op-shops for special bits and pieces.

Odette and her nine little guests loved trying on different variations of their outfits at the party. Anni made it even more exciting by creating a dress-up stand with extra strands of beads, brooches, hats and dresses for some try-on fun! In between playing dress-ups they all enjoyed some old fashioned party games including pass the parcel, musical chairs and pin the teacup on the teapot.

Finding a jaw-dropping location for an event can be simple, any stylist or event supplier worth their salt should have a wealth of knowledge when it comes to secret locations. The key to working

in such an amazing setting is to keep the details simple. Hand picked garden flowers, vintage mix-and-match chairs, plates, crystal and silverware are all this setting needs. Easily hired

or sourced from family, friends and the local bric-a-brac shops for next to nothing. Plain linen cloths add continuity and calm to this eclectic decorating style. The amazing, draped marquee

offers an intimate alternative in the garden, open sides allow the summer breezes in but keep the heat of the day out.

A B I R T H D AY PA R T Y

With a birthday that falls smack bang in the middle of the summer holiday season, there's really no excuse not to celebrate with a

party. It's a time of year when everyone is in relaxation mode, done with the hectic busyness of Christmas, not yet thinking of work, just looking for a chance to get together with friends, share good

food, a few drinks and some great conversation.

As we live in a small, heritage cottage our entertaining area is limited so we had to be clever when it came to feeding 50+ people, making sure each one had a cold drink and a place to sit and chat. Our courtyard is tiny and houses the world's biggest dog kennel so we didn't have a lot of room to move – the small space did however

make the mood more intimate which worked just fine.

I am completely enamoured with festoon party lights and use any feeble excuse to put them up. They can transform any environment into an enchanting celebration and impart such a beautiful light it's hard to resist them. We simply bought the ordinary coloured

variety from our local hardware store and swapped out the coloured globes for low-watt frosted globes. Long after the party has been and gone I am resolved to keep them up for as long as

they keep twinkling.

My husband, John, is a chef so he, and our friend and chef, Ines, set about creating an Asian feast, all pre-prepared before the party, or cooked to order on the night in a giant wok they brought home from the restaurant. We served each dish in takeout containers so guests could help themselves to whatever course they fancied. We could have easily ordered takeout from our favourite restaurant but it was exciting having it cooked right in front of our guests.

Styling was kept simple. We hired lots of wooden crates and used them for all manner of purposes – upturned with cushions for seating, overflowing with glassware, or scattered around the courtyard as a place to rest a glass while eating. We kept the drinks' menu tight and set up a station outside with lots of ice, fresh lime wedges and clean glasses so guests could help themselves when we weren't nearby. Bottles of each brew were stashed in galvanised iron tubs, filled to the brim with ice so a cold one was never far away.

When you’re a teenager, school holidays seem to go forever – and often you can’t wait to get back to school to catch up with

all the girls and swap holiday hero stories. Jane’s good friend, Mo and her husband, Simon, have just wound up their busy

holiday schedule with their two daughters Ceci and Lulu and their youngest, Jock. the girls planned a back-to-school pool party to catch up on all the gossip with their friends, making the most of the february heat. amongst the sharing of holiday

tales there were loads of laughs and lots of fun in the pool.

teenagers love photos and with iphones at the ready all these good times make the best happy snaps. Claudia and Lulu

downloaded the hipstamatic app – a super cool, retro-filter for the iphone camera – it made taking photos a lot of fun and they

all ended up with some great pics to post on facebook that night.

Together with some delicious dips and nibbles there was plenty to keep everyone happy. Fancy soft drinks, stashed on ice, added a pop of colour and kept everyone’s thirst quenched throughout the day.

Soak beans separately overnight in three times their volume in water (ie 750ml each).

Boil beans in separate pots until just cooked. Times will vary due to differing beans, between 45 minutes to 90 minutes so check regularly.

Once cooked, rinse beans well in cold, running water.

Chop onions, celery, carrot and garlic and fry off in vegetable oil until well caramelised. Mix in cooked beans, add canned tomatoes, chilli flakes, herbs and juice then transfer to large baking tray, cover with foil and bake for 3-4 hours at 175oC.

When it comes out of the oven, season with salt, pepper and sugar. Mix through cold virgin olive oil and serve.

Beans can be made well in advance and frozen until needed. Can be frozen for approximately 6 months.

Vibrant and wholesome, these dips look as good as they taste. Served up with filled flatbreads they keep the hunger pains at bay for a house-full of growing teens. Get some friends together the night before or the morning of your party and make your own dips to mix with store-bought ones. We loved the guacamole and mango salsa dip – so easy to make and an economical way to feed the masses when served with an overflowing bowl of corn chips.

When race day hits, our talented friends at Georgeous take corporate functions to whole new level. Bold statements are made

with a vibrant colour palette, which of course is masterfully pulled back with some neutral basics. This look is far removed from the ho-hum cliché of business entertaining and bound to be a winner.

Racing is always synonymous with fresh, vibrant florals, here a mix and match of colours is sublime. A combination of loose

arrangements set on simple kraft paper-covered tabletops, make room for some very special, hand made details.

Light and bright this setting is bound to get race-goers raring to go.

Floral genius, Cecilia Fox, created the table arrangements. A collection of poppies, Bells of Ireland, sweet peas, spray roses and peonies in mix-and-match coloured glass vases come to life on the tabletops.

This vibrant palette inspired hand tie-dyed and sewn cushions, dotting bursts of colour around the seating areas.
