H2020, three pillars
FET
FET in H2020
• Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) will aim at radically new technologies by exploring novel and high risk ideas building on scientific foundations
• FET will promote research beyond what is known, accepted or widely adopted and foster novel and visionary thinking to open promising paths towards powerful new technologies
• The supported research will be interdisciplinary and positioned between research driven by science and research driven by societal challenges or by industrial competitivness
• FET will support activities to make Europe the best place for collaborative research on future and emerging technologies

FET Open in FP7 141 Funded projects
• Fostering new ideas
• supporting early-stage science and technology research
• exploring new foundations for radically new future technologies by
challenging current paradigms and venturing into unknown areas
• A bottom-up selection process widely open to any research ideas
• Attractive to new and high-potential research and innovation players
• Mechanisms for early detection and encouragement of promising new areas, developments and trends
• Modelled on FP7 Xtrack
FET Open in H2020
Long-term vision
• of technological possibilities far beyond the state-of-the-art
Foundational
• establishing a basis for a new kind of technology
Novelty
• not incremental refinement of existing ideas and concepts
S&T targeted
• research targets concrete breakthroughs in S&T
High-risk
• countered by novel concepts and ideas and interdisciplinary research approach
Interdisciplinarity
• going beyond current mainstream collaboration configurations

Xtrack pilot
Xtrack pilot³ a new submission format, a new evaluation process, a new SEP system…
• Get lighter • From “light submission” to “light end to end process”
10-page proposal & '10+ page' project technical annexe
Mid-term and final review based on periodic scientific report
• Get faster • Reduce time from idea to contract in FET Open
1-step submission with 2-stage evaluation
• Get more robust • Combine internal scalability with high quality review
FET Proactive 22 Initiatives in FP7
FP5-6
FP7
FET Proactive in H2020
Exploratory objective
• Exploring a variety of directions, building up critical mass of researchers and groups around promising emerging themes
• Encouraging of new inter-disciplinary collaborative explorations around a new area/theme
Pathfinding objective
• Translating science into concrete technological directions
• Projects building on proofs-of-concept and, while still high-risk, want to take them to a next level of development
• Consolidating technological directions to be mature enough for hand-over (to LEIT, societal challenges, FET Flagships,…)

FET Flagship concept
14
• Ambitious, large-scale, science-driven, goal-oriented, roadmap-based research initiatives
• Provide a strong basis for future technological innovation and novel benefits for society
• Require:
- A long-term commitment of all stakeholders sharing a common scientific vision
- A joint effort of EU and national programmes (~100 M€/year over 10 years)
To help overcome the fragmentation of European research & innovation effort and increase its impact

Graphene
Nokia Morph concept - Credit: Nokia Research Center
• Graphene, is a 2D material , a single layer of carbon atoms, stronger than diamond, yet lightweight and flexible and an exceptional electricity conductor.
• The Graphene Flagship will bring graphene, and related 2D materials, from academic labs to industry, manufacturing and society.
• Examples of products:
electronic paper
bendable smartphones
enhanced solar cells and batteries
lighter and more energy efficient airplanes.
• On the longer term, graphene is expected to give rise to new computers and revolutionary medical applications such as artificial retinas.
Start Date: 1/10/2013
Duration: 30 Months
