In February 1999, Unser was in 6th grade when diagnosed with Transverse Myelitis (TM), a rare and often paralyzing spinal cord inflammation. In April 1999 she returned home, paralyzed and in a wheelchair but energized in her quest to build awareness of TM. Today, this 22 year-old Redlands college student is an experienced SCUBA diver who will become the first person who is paralyzed to SCUBA dive at the Aquarium of the Pacific. Over the past decade, Unser has helped many others with disabilities and has served as National Disabilities spokesperson for New Mexico Governor and former presidential candidate Bill Richardson. Her accomplishments have won national acclaim, including being featured in People magazine and on CBS 48 Hours. In fall of 1999 the Cody Unser First Step Foundation was created to generate awareness and research of TM. NASCAR star Bobby Labonte serves as honorary chairman. After becoming SCUBA diving certified, Unser formed “Operation Deep Down”, a military diving program that introduces wounded veterans to SCUBA diving as a way to rehabilitate through recreation. In 2001 Unser announced the formation of a TM research consortium spearheaded by Johns Hopkins Hospital. Unser won Prudential’s national 2001 “Spirit of Community Award” as one of America’s Top 10 youth volunteers. Unser has introduced SmashMouth at its 1999 Albuquerque concert, was the guest of Luc Longley at a Phoenix Suns game, met pop group “N’Sync” in Phoenix, received a citation from the New Mexico Speaker of the House, and has an ongoing relationship with the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundation.
