This piece opened a music festival’s gala concert of student ensembles ranging from elementary school bands to high school jazz bands and choirs. Festival Fanfare is set for 3 antiphonal choirs of 5 trumpets each with percussion adding colour and drama. It is melodic and rhythmic with the 3 choirs passing different fanfare motifs between them. All players come together with a powerful statement of the theme which is reminiscent of a big movie fanfare such as those found in Ben Hur and the movies of John Williams. In the parts there are indications as to the musicians role at that time. Either “backgrounds” or “lead” indicates which melodic or rhythmic material must be brought forward. Be sure to not accent the non- accented notes. The tendency is too over-blow and over-articulate when such large forces of trumpets are gathered together. Keep the articulations tenuto except where marked. The dynamic should be held back until the crescendo into the Grandioso section for maximum effect at this spot. PREVIEW ONLY
