Welcome to this year’s Deal Festival of Music and the Arts

Deal Festival of Music and the Arts isconstantly growing, and ambition andaspiration drive our purpose. However, thevalues of engagement, excellence andenrichment are built into everything we plan.

Once again, we combine outstanding‘established’ and ‘emerging’ artists, full in theknowledge that the energy of such events isfelt by all. We are very proud to welcomemajor international artists such as StevenIsserlis, DFMA’s Vice President and a former Artistic Director; GuyJohnston, 2000 BBC Young Musician of the Year, performing alongsidethe European Union Chamber Orchestra; and Freddy Kempf, 1992 BBCYoung Musician of the Year and 1996 winner of Moscow’s InternationalTchaikovsky Competition. Following last year’s memorable ‘Spirit ofVenice’ we welcome back the Academy of Ancient Music who, togetherwith talented young musicians from Guildhall School of Music andDrama’s Historical Performance department, profile the music of J.S.Bach under the direction of Bach scholar John Butt. Among the newfaces at Deal will be the brilliant music theatre ensemble East LondonMusic Group, classical accordionist Bartosz Glowacki and MugenkyoTaiko Drummers. Opera comes to Deal with the Olivier-Award winningcompany Operaupclose and jazz is presented by arguably the mostexciting Big Band in the UK, the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of GreatBritain. We promise to provide special musical experiences, such asMorgan Szymanski’s magical guitar recital, which will be surrounded bythe exquisite paintings of Joseph Sevier, while Kosmos bring you hot-blooded tango. SEAS artists create live art to Olivier Messiaen’spoignant ‘Quartet for the End of Time’. Drama comes to life in themagnificent gardens of Walmer Castle and The Pines, courtesy of TheChangeling Theatre Company, and the often bawdy past of Deal is re-enacted by Simon Gregory with a cast of locally based performers. Weare proud too to have re-established a relationship with TurnerContemporary, where a special day of contemporary dance and musicwill permeate the entire gallery with the remarkable dancers from TrinityLaban and percussionist Joby Burgess. There are many events foryounger people and families, celebrations of the work being done by ourflagship education programme Bold As, and walks and talks and a hostof lunchtime and fringe concerts and events.

2016’s programme, the 34th Deal Festival, is brim full of musicalambition and aspiration and we hope you enjoy each event having felttotally engaged and enriched.

Our festival reaches firmly into Deal, Dover, Sandwich and Margate, and with such special places, brim full of fantastic pubs, restaurants, galleries, shops and attractions, you are guaranteed a good time. Enjoy!
