Martin Hamilton

These are the introductory slides for my workshop at the 2014 ALT-C conference. The goal of this session is to draw upon the expertise and experience of Learning Technologists to identify support that could be offered to help so-called "NEETs" to thrive.

1. The NEET Phenomenon

Lost in Transition, the Work Foundation's 2011 report on the NEET phenomenon - http://goo.gl/axQHyK

“In 2011 nearly a third of young people classified as NEET had qualifications at A-Level or above, a third left school with GCSE grades A-C, and one in six had achieved other qualifications such as NVQs.

Nearly a third had personal situations that made it difficult for them to engage with conventional education programmes, such as disabilities or responsibilities as carers for family members.”

Research & Consultation:

Next Gen report from NESTA in 2011: http://www.nesta.org.uk/publications/next-gen

(Ian Livingstone et al)

“The education system (including universities and FE colleges) doesn’t provide the skills that the UK video games and visual effects industries need.

Computer science should be on the national curriculum alongside maths and physics; a GCSE in computer science should be introduced in all schools.”

2. The Digital Skills Crisis

UK Digital Skills Task Force in 2014Digital Skills for Tomorrow’s World report - http://www.ukdigitalskills.com

(Maggie Philbin et al)

“As of March 2014 there were still 975,000 young people in the UK who were not in education, employment or training, despite Microsoft reporting that there were 100,000 unfilled vacancies unfilled in partner companies across the UK last year.”

Research & Consultation:

Further Education Learning Technology Action Group (FELTAG) report – http://feltag.org.uk

“Employers’ role in the development and delivery of FE curricula. Identify to what extent digital technology can help get greater engagement of employers in the design and delivery of learning.

An innovation fund should support leading-edge apprenticeships, traineeships and internships that use a high degree of digital technology in their delivery”
