    TheFelixstoweAcademyFelixstowe Academy opened in September2011 and serves the local community of Felixstowe. The Academy is currently deli vering education to over 14 00 students withapproximately 200 in the Academys Sixth Form. The Academy has a strongtradition of delivering a rich and varied mixture of subjects.

    The new Felixstowe Academy buil ding is due to open by Ap ril 2014, and wil l provideFelixstowe with an impressive 21st century education centre - a centre the wholecommunity can be proud of.

    Currently the Felixstowe Academy is based on two sites - Garrison Campus andMaidstone Campus.

    The Maidstone Campus is situated on Maidstone Road, a short walk to the new site. Aspart of our transition planning into the new Academy building, all Year 7 to Year 9students are based on our Maidstone Campus. The Maidstone campus, generousgrounds and purpose built sports facilities, including an allweather pitch, will beincorporated into the new multi-million pound Academy building.

    The Garrison Campus, situated on Garrison Lane inFelixstowe, is the centre for our Year 10, Year 11 andSixth Form students. This site has 21st century resourceswhich serve to deliver a diverse range of exciting andchallenging courses to Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5students. Every student on the Garrison Campus hasbeen provided with an Apple iPad as part of ourcommitment to provide students with 21st centuryteaching and learning tools. We are pleased ourstudents are at the forefront of the progression of technology in the classroom.

    The Academy atthe Heart of theCommunityFelixstowe Academy is at the heart of the localcommunity engaging with a wide range ofproviders to ensure the best for our students, theirfamilies and the wider community. The localcommunity, businesses, associated primary schools,

    other schools and community organisations allform an integral part of life at Felixstowe Academy.

    the local community ranging from the Arts toSports, which will only be enhanced and developedas we enter the new Academy building.

    Felixstowe Academy operates on extended hoursand designated spaces are available for learning,community and social activities and familyeducation. We endeavour to create an Academy inwhich the local community can take great pride andthat has a reputation for considering everyonesneeds - regardless of ability, gender and ethnicity.

    I am really pleased to be able to welcome you to Felixstowe Academyat an exciting time in our development. With the completion of a brandnew build almost within reach, an investment of approximately 18million in education for Felixstowe at this di fficult time economically isof great signicance. This is a great opportunity that needs to welcomedand supported to ensure that the education of future generations of young people in Felixstowe is realised and delivered.

    I am currently building and leading a team of committed professionalswho are as passionate as I am in delivering an outstandingeducational experience for all young people in Felixstowe. I want toensure that all young people have the same opportunities to realisetheir potential in developing skills and talents that will enable them tocompete on an equal basis for places in education beyond the Academyand in the world of work with other young people nationally.

    I am delighted that many of our A Level and BTEC students were able,with excellent results in the Summer, to move on to the next stage oftheir lives with condence, a sense of pride, achievement and withexcitement that the future for them is shining bright. We have studentswho have gone on to study at Cambridge and at other equally prestigious educational establishments. Those not going on to furthereducation have been fortunate enough to secure apprenticeships oremployment.

    We are well aware that there is a distance to travel on this journey tobecoming an Outstanding Academy, and that there is much for us todo in partnership with parents/carers and as well as with the widerFelixstowe community to position Felixstowe Academy at the heart ofthe local community, somewhere where we are all proud to say we belong.

    Should you choose Felixstowe Academy to deliver the next part of theeducational journey for your child, we will do our very best to ensure thatwe deliver what we say and that is to, Inspire young people to maketheir best better.

    We recognise that everyone is unique and during theirlearning journey students will travel at di ff erent speedsusing diff erent skills, talents and abilities as they moveup through the Academy. Throughout their time withus our students are guided along a series of LearningPathwaysthat best suit their needs. We believe thatchoice, exibility and progression are key elementsof our curriculum o ff er, as we support, challenge andinspire our students to achieve their potential.

    Throughout Key Stage 3 students follow a wide rangeof subjects taught by specialists who o ff er a wealth ofexperience and support. Subject specialist knowledgeis delivered through a whole host of experiencestogether with the development of the personal,learning and thinking skills.

    In Years 10 and 11, students follow one of threeLearning Pathways that lead onto higher levels oflearning during Years 12 and 13 (Key Stage 5).

    Pathway A: Designed to equip students with the necessarywork-related GCSE equivalent vocationalqualications. Students will be guided in theirselection of a learning package of qualicationsthat will enable them to be fully engaged withlearning and to become employable by the end ofYear 11. Other short courses that are available tostudents will include Experience of Workwhichcan accredit work experience placements orweekend jobs, awards in Enterprise, Personal Financeand Employability. These courses can be studiedalongside options from Pathway B to match thestudents strengths and interests.

    Pathway B: The majority of students follow this pathway. Withguidance from their teachers they make choices fromthe vast array of GCSE and BTEC listed on page 11.

    Pathway C:Our more advanced students may choose to followthis pathway, completing AS and A2 Level courses inCritical Thinking and/or GCSEs in Triple Science.

    At Key Stage 5 students can follow a wide rangeof courses that continue and extend the pathwayspursued at Key Stage 4. We have a comprehensiveoff er of A Level, BTEC at Levels 2 and 3 which meetstudentsneeds and aspirations. Students typicallyfollow four A Level or Level 3 BTEC courses or acombination of BTEC/AS Levels and BTEC Level 2courses. Alongside this students attend a guidancesession once a fortnight which helps them prepareto become productive citizens.

    Care, guidanceand support

    1 Felixstowe Academy Prospectus

    Excellent behaviour is essential in orderto learn and it is expected of all students.Our clear Discipline with DignityBehaviour Policy ensures that studentsare happy and safe in the Academy sothat teachers can teach and students canlearn in conditions conducive to making

    the most of their opportunities.

    For the few students who nd it moredifficult to live up to our expectationsand standards, a range of supportsystems are in place including: the useof revised curricula, pastoral supportmanagers, tutor support and senior sta ff intervention alongside clearly establishedsanctions and specialist counselling. These support systems enhance theopportunity for transformation to

    acceptable standards. Students areresponsible for their own actions andthe Academy expects the full supportof parents/carers when dealing withstudents who are challenging our valuesand expectations.

    Great value is put on what our studentsfeel and what they have to say. Studentshave opportunities to give their viewsand ideas through a range of StudentFocus groups, and through posts of

    responsibility such as Head Boy and HeadGirl, Peer Mentors and Prefects, as well assurveys of student opinion. Sharing theleadership of the Academy in this wayencourages a sense of responsibility andbelonging as well as helping them todevelop their condence, maturity andself esteem.

    We rmly believe that the positivepartnership created between parents/ carers, students and sta ff is the key to a

    successful, enjoyable and highly valuededucation. We will work closely withyou as parents and carers to ensurethat your child achieves their very bestin all activities within the Academy.Information on progress will be providedthrough an online report and throughProgress meetings to give you theopportunity to discuss any issues thatmay arise. Research shows that yourinvolvement in your childs education willmake a signicant di ff erence we arecommitted to helping you achieve this.
