The actual radiation procedure will take place in a newly constructed “vault,” a fortress of a room whose walls, floors and ceilings must be constructed with six feet of concrete to contain the radiation. The total project cost is $3.5 mil- lion, with 1.5 dedicated to new con- struction and the remaining dedicated to purchasing a linear accelerator, bringing advanced 3D radiation tech- nology directly to residents in Zach- ary and the surrounding area. Radiation oncology uses high en- ergy radiation to control, shrink or kill cancerous cells and is often used in combination with surgery and/ or chemotherapy. Very specialized equipment and analyses are required to offer this procedure; however, the procedure itself only averages two minutes. BY DANIEL DUGGAN East Feliciana voters went to the polls on Saturday, issuing a re- sounding defeat on the East Feli- ciana School Board’s tax increase proposal. The school board had pro- posed a 38-mill, 10-year tax, which would have been the largest tax in- crease in parish history. According to uncertified returns, over 76% of the voters voted no, with less than 24% voting for the tax increase. The tax increase would have raised $4.4 million dollars per year for the academically struggling district. The number of voters showing up to vote in the tax election was 4772, representing a strong turnout for an off-date tax election. Prior to the election East Feliciana Parish officials not affiliated with the school system were concerned that the large tax increase would have had a negative effect on parish and municipal budgets, causing some businesses that represent sizeable tax revenues to leave the parish. In the weeks leading up to the vote, the school board remained qui- et on the tax increase; however, du- eling Facebook campaigns emerged to urge voters to vote for or against the tax increase. The Facebook page East Felici- ana Citizens Against Property Tax Increase formed to organize voter turnout to defeat the tax. Much of the discussion on the site addressed alleged cronyism and systemic dys- function of district administration in addition to debates about tax policy and the merits of funding public school systems in general. On the other hand, a page called East Feliciana Say Yes to Kids urged voters to pass the tax increase by pro- viding answers to many frequently asked questions about how exactly the tax would affect property owners and how the school district planned to use the revenue. East Feliciana Superintendent Henderson Lewis issued a statement Monday afternoon saying, “Our school district will have to make some tough decisions to accommo- date our students. Teacher pay, sala- ries, recruitment and retention will continue to be a struggle.” In other parish elections, the in- cumbent mayor of the Village of Wilson, Marilyn Broadway, defeated former Mayor Joshua L. Thomas 165 votes to 46. The voters of Wilson re- called and ousted Joshua Thomas in 2010. In the election for justice of the peace–District 3, “Billy” Yarbrough defeated “Sissy” Burge 886 votes to 336. The tightest race on Saturday’s ballot was for constable in District 2.
