BASEBALL (28-17, 13-11 RRAC): The Pilots control their own destiny in terms of making the conference tournament and could clear up the playoff picture this week with a series win over the Wiley College Wildcats. The Pilots are currently tied for 4th place in the regular season standings with the Our Lady of the Lake Saints, whom they host next week. Wiley currently sits in 6th place in the season standings, three games behind the Pilots and Saints.

The Pilots look to improve on their impressive 15-3 road record this season this weekend as they travel to Marshall, Texas, for double headers on Friday and Saturday beginning at noon both days. The games will be played at Coker Field at 2768 Fair Street.

WOMEN’S TENNIS (3-7): The Pilots will join Texas A&M – Texarkana, LSU Alexandria, University of the Southwest, John Brown University, Southwestern Christian and Texas Wesleyan University in Arlington, Texas, for the NAIA Women’s Regional Tournament. The tournament will be April 21-23.

The Pilots will play Texas Wesleyan at 4 p.m. on Thursday afternoon at the Arlington Tennis Center. To see the tournament webpage, click here.

1. Spring Fling- Life on the Mall. It was great to see

so many students participate in Spring Fling this past week. While what happens in the classroom and in labs will always be most important, extra-curricular events such as Spring Fling help to bring students together to socialize and gain deeper connection to LSUS. It also offers the opportunity for our student organizations to tell their stories and recruit members. The LSUS Weightlifting Club tried to convince me to try lifting the weights you can see in the picture below. Yea, right. Instead, a picture. The diversity of the students in this picture in terrific, including how many are from a foreign country or a different state (including, brace yourself, Yankees). Congratulations to Kyle Pierce for his great work. No LSUS professor is more greatly respected and loved by his/her students.

2. Congratulations to… Scott Hardwick, selected President of the LSUS Staff Senate. Scott has been a

very strong member of both the Staff Senate and LSUS Planning Council. He succeeds Lance Cole who has juggled his many University Police responsibilities to very effectively lead the Staff Senate. Also to Dennis Henderson, re-elected President of the LSUS Student Government Association. Dennis is doing a great job of uniting students and in keeping them informed. We will have another great year with Scott and Dennis in these key leadership roles.

3. Budget/We are Open!!! This past week I provided two budget updates via email. At our Spring Fling

event on Friday, I used the PA system to announce to participants that LSUS will for sure be open this summer and next academic year (fall and spring). I encouraged them to get pre-registered- the classes they see scheduled will be taught. The status of the TOPS award continues to be debated at the Capitol. We need to be prepared to welcome students who are currently enrolled elsewhere that might “come home” to enroll at LSUS.

4. Pilot Palooza. Concerning enrollment, this Friday from noon until 6:00 will be the inaugural Pilot

Palooza event to showcase LSUS for prospective students. Like Spring Fling, there will be booths set up to facilitate interactions with these students. I especially encourage faculty to come out to the Campus Mall area to interact in informal conversations concerning LSUS. It is critically important that we build our undergraduate enrollment- you can help. Best wishes to David Stanford and the LSUS Admissions Office team.

5. Departures: Story Concerning Rhonda Failey. The Shreveport Times article yesterday on the

pending departure of our great colleague, Rhonda Failey, is generating much discussion within the community. Students and co-workers have filled her personal Facebook page with notes of appreciation for her time at LSUS, and an alumni even wrote a tribute/goodbye song to her in the tune of “Make you feel my love”. You can listen to it here. As the story in the Shreveport Times states, Rhonda is just one of a number of individuals who have left or retired early from LSUS in great part because of the long, continuing budget challenges facing our state. I posted the following on Facebook:

What makes all of this worse is the constant uncertainty for students, faculty and staff as to what may or may not happen. The LSUS faculty and staff, over time, have been amazing in their dedication to students. They deserve better. Much better.

To each of you, thank you for what you have done, and are continuing to do for our students.

6. Arrivals: Ongoing Faculty/Staff Hiring. We are completing the faculty hiring season for six

faculty searches across campus (two are completed) in an effort to replace some of the

departed/retired faculty over the past several years. In August, for the first time in years, we will be

having a new faculty orientation to help prepare these new faculty to contribute to LSU Shreveport.

Please make these candidates feel welcome as you see them on their visits! Special thanks to Kristin

Fiser and Bill Wolfe in Human Resources who meet individually with each candidate.

7. Authors in April. This coming Saturday is the annual Authors in April event that benefits the LSUS

Pioneer Heritage Center. This year’s featured author is Paula McLain, author of The Paris Wife. Marty Young, the Director of the Pioneer Heritage Center, does a great job of coordinating everything. And, as usual, Marty drafts his immediate family and in-laws to help support the event. As we go forward, especially towards our 50th Anniversary Year, we will be looking for ways to gain greater LSUS connectivity to this and other great annual events.
