WHAT IS FEDERAL WORK-STUDY?● Federal grant that allows students to earn funding via a bi-weekly paycheck to

help cover non-billable expenses. ● Does NOT get applied directly to tuition and fees.● Students must be hired into a work-study approved job to begin to earn

funding.

■ Submit a 2021-22 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to Temple University.

■ Students must have a valid FAFSA on file and qualify for Title IV Federal Aid.

■ Students must demonstrate unmet financial need based off of the FAFSA’s Expected Family Contribution.

○ Other sources of aid can also reduce unmet need.

■ Review the SFS section of the Cost and Aid tab regularly to ensure you have completed all financial aid requirements.

■ Outstanding financial aid requirements could result in you receiving an estimated financial aid offer, or an incomplete financial aid offer.

● Go to sfs.temple.edu● Scroll over ‘Financial Aid Types’ and click on ‘Federal Work-Study’

OFF-CAMPUS EMPLOYERS● SFS contracts with approved local non-profit organizations to provide

community service work-study positions.● These organizations do not have access to Temple’s systems so the hiring

process for students placed at this sites are handled by SFS.● Students can only utilize their Federal work-study grant at approved employer

so please contact us prior to beginning employment.

SUMMER FEDERAL WORK-STUDY● Summer Federal Work-Study Program allows students to earn funding toward

educational expenses for the upcoming academic year.

● Students interested in working during the Summer semester should email us at

[email protected] around mid-April.

● Students who have secured an approved Federal Work-study position can email

us to request to be reviewed for the work-study grant. Please review the

eligibility requirements below.

SUMMER FEDERAL WORK-STUDYSummer Work-Study Eligibility Requirements:

● Student must have a valid FAFSA on file for the current year and the upcoming academic year.

● Student must also have submitted all Financial Aid requirements for upcoming aid year. You can

locate this in the Cost & Aid tab of TUPortal.

● Student must qualify for Title IV Aid.

● Student must have unmet financial need- This is determined by the FAFSA Application(s) on file.

● Student must be either enrolled for Summer Session or pre-registered for the upcoming Fall term.

● Students enrolled in Summer session must submit the FWSENR form located in the forms section of

sfs.temple.edu

CAN I INCREASE MY WORK-STUDY OFFER?

● Students can request to be reviewed for an increase. ● Increases are not guaranteed. Work-study increases are based on available

funding and unmet need on the student’s aid account. ● Borrowing large private or Parent Plus loans can affect the ability for us to

post work-study on an account as we cannot exceed the Cost of Attendance set for each semester.

HOW MANY HOURS CAN I WORK IN MY WORK-STUDY JOB?

● Student can only work up to 20 hours per week during the Fall/Spring Semester. How many hours you are eligible to work per semester is based on your work-study allocation for that semester.

● During the Summer Session students can work up to 40 hours per week if they have enough work-study funding to cover their wages.

● Summer work-study is a separate award from Fall/Spring and must be requested in mid-April. We do not roll over unused funding from Fall/Spring to Summer

● Students are not permitted to work during their scheduled class hours. The only exception if is there is written notice that the class has been canceled.

WHO SHOULD I CONTACT WITH ISSUES COMPLETING THE I-9?Once hired, you will receive a welcome email from Equifax. If the email is not received, contact your department hiring manager.

Step 1: Complete Section 1 of the Form I-9 online through Equifax.Step 2: Complete Section 2 of the Form I-9 by scheduling an appointment at an I-9 Anywhere location.

● I-9 Anywhere is a remote compliance solution that offers newly hired employees the flexibility of completing Section 2 of the Form I-9 at one of many locations across the United States.

● This is a quick and convenient option for employees to comply with the Form I-9 processing requirements using a certified I-9 completer.

DO I RECEIVE A W-2 FOR MY WORK-STUDY POSITION?● The current and three prior calendar year W-2 forms are maintained by Tax

Management Services. Active employees can obtain these W-2 forms on TUportal.

● Temple Payroll will reach out to all students & employees regarding the distribution of W-2’s

● Please note that the W-2 does not distinguish between work-study pay and department funded pay.

HOW CAN I VERIFY MY EMPLOYMENT?● All verification of employment has to go through Temple’s HR department. Temple uses “ The Work

Number” for these types of requests.

● THE WORK NUMBER® is a service of Equifax that provides employees with an automated process to handle employment and income verifications. It allows our employees to have their employment and income verified within a matter of minutes. This fast, secure service is used for mortgage applications, reference checks, loan applications, apartment leases, government aid or most other applications that require proof of employment.

CAN I QUALIFY TO RECEIVE SNAP AS A WORK-STUDY STUDENT?The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 signed by President Joseph R. Biden on March 11, 2021, extends increases to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) maximum allotments from July 1, 2021, through Sept. 30, 2021.

● It’s now easier for college students to get food assistance during the pandemic. ● If you are concerned or have difficulty affording groceries or accessing enough food to eat every

day, we have good news: you may be eligible for new opportunities to get additional supports including SNAP.- SUPPLEMENTAL NUTRITION ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (SNAP)

CAN I QUALIFY TO RECEIVE SNAP AS A WORK-STUDY STUDENT?https://www.fns.usda.gov/snap/recipient/eligibility During the public health emergency, you may be eligible for SNAP benefits if you are enrolled at least half time in an institution of higher education and you are:

● approved to participate in the Temple’s federal work-study program (email [email protected] with questions); OR

● have an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) of zero in the current academic year. An EFC of zero will be displayed as “000000” on the FAFSA’s Student Aid Report (SAR). Your EFC is also shown on the College Financing Plan (formerly Financial Aid Shopping Sheet), accessible via the Costs & Aid tab of your TUportal.

CAN I QUALIFY TO RECEIVE SNAP AS A WORK-STUDY STUDENT? How do I get a copy of my Student Aid Report (SAR)? Once your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form has been processed, you can get a copy of your Student Aid Report (SAR) in two easy steps. 1. Log in to the https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa FAFSA.gov site using your FSA ID 2. Select the “View or Print your Student Aid Report (SAR)" option near the middle of the “My FAFSA" page. Your EFC will be in the upper right corner of the first page of your Student Aid Report. The Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243; TTY for the deaf or hard of hearing 1-800-730-8913) can also send a copy of your SAR via U.S. mail (allow 10–14 days for delivery).

CAN I USE FEDERAL WORK-STUDY AFTER I GRADUATE?● Federal work-study is based on being enrolled and eligible for federal aid.● Once a student graduates they can no longer be paid from federal work-study

funds.● Temple departments can allow students to work one semester after the

student graduates. This only applies to student workers being paid 100% out of the department budget.
