Students-1

• 1st set of students admitted into 9 new federal universities, established to increase access to tertiary education.

• In 13 states the Girl Education Programme is being implemented

• Back – To – School programme (Mmuta Bu’ike) launched in Enugu to enhance access to education for boys in the south east geo-political zone.

• 125 day and boarding schools are being constructed under the Almajiri education programme in 27 states such as Adamawa, Yobe, Zamfara, Nasarawa, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Delta and Akwa Ibom.

In order to reduce the 10.5 million out of school children in the country, a

number of basic education programmes such as the Almajiri Education, the

Girl-Child Education and Back-to-School were initiated.

Students-2

• 101 Presidential special scholarships awarded to 1st

class graduates in top 25 global institutions. Also to encourage academic staff development in tertiary institutions.

• The president approved N563million for scholarship award as counterpart funding for foreign students.

• O’Level credit pass in English and Maths has gone up from 25.99% before the Jonathan era to 70%

• Enrolment into the College of Education increased by 20% from 2011 to 2013 (620,000-750,000).

UBEC: Universal Basic Education

Commission• UBEC completed the harmonisation of Islamiyya and basic

education curriculum for implementation in Almajiri schools.

• Almajiri education programme commissioned by the president in Sokoto 10th April, 2012 saw the completion of 32 schools.

• 64 Almajiri Model Schools recently began operation. These are part of a list of 89 schools being constructed through UBEC. The remaining 25 have been completed and will soon be handed over to the host states.

• 300 additional Almajiri schools have been slated for construction in line with the survey conducted.

• Basic school enrolment increased from 23 million to over 30 million. Further increase is expected due to the handover of Almajirischools to the state government.

Teacher Professional Development (TPD) programme

N6 billion paid by UBEC for teachers capacity building in Nigeria. As a

result the Teacher Professional Development (TPD) programme has trained

approx. 299, 720 teachers.

Academic Staff

• The Federal Government has sponsored 7,000 lecturers of federal and state tertiary institutions for post-graduate studies home and abroad to improve the quality of instruction

• 25 Science teachers from across the federation sponsored for training in Canada to enhance ability to train others

• Bilateral co-operation with Korea and Japan for basic level training of Mathematics and Science teachers

• 17,000 teachers deployed to public primary schools in 34 states by the Federal Teachers Scheme.

• 28,000 primary school head teachers across the nation underwent training to enhance leadership abilities.

• Micro-teaching laboratories are under construction in 58 federal and state Colleges of Education across the country.

• The MDG sponsored construction and furnishing of 105 blocks of 2, 3 & 4 classrooms, 2 examination halls, 4 community libraries, 4 generator houses, 9 computer centres, 3 boreholes and 15 VIP toilets in 15 states.

• 27 Federal Universities connected via 10GBps meshed trunk circuits, to form the Nigerian Research & Education Network (Ng REN) with connectivity to other international research networks

• 1 year of formal early child education has been introduced into the system.

• Curriculum for Entrepreneurship degree programmes developed and approved in established entrepreneurship centres across tertiary institutions to help link education to work and develop the entrepreneurial capacity of graduates.

• Streamlining of part-time programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

• High Impact Fund to support higher institutions of learning in becoming Centres of Excellence has been established.

• Each selected University gets N3 billion; Polytechnics and Colleges of Education N1 billion

• Budgetary allocations to education have doubled.

• The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has increased enrolment capacity to 250,000 annually.

• Institutions that award the National Certificate of Education (NCE) have increased from 96-124 since 2011.

• Approx. 41,000 School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs) have been established to ensure community involvement.

• 14 new universities established to improve access to higher education and absorb thousands of students who are denied university admission annually.

• 12 are conventional and 2 are specialized Police and Maritime Universities

• N58 Billion was granted in 3 phases to Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Nigeria to encourage their development as Centres Of Excellence.

Institutions: Growth-3

• Establishment of School of Midwifery Nguru, north eastern Nigeria.

• The Safe Schools Initiative ensures that young people school in environments ripe for learning, growth and development free of fear.

• 3 nomadic education centres were established in the north east and community-based nomadic schools were rehabilitated.

• So far, about125 Tsangaya model schools have been completed and furnished with modern facilities.

• Institutional accreditation for 36 Universities that have met requirements i.e. 10 years and older

• Undergraduate Basic Minimum Academic Standards (BMAS) reviewed for Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges Of Education.

• Licences granted to 135 Innovation And Vocational Enterprise Institutions to provide alternative higher education and technical training.

• 9 new private universities licensed, bringing total number to 50.

• 4,944,000 library resource materials provided

for Junior Secondary Schools across Nigeria.

• 19.6 Million English Language, Mathematics,

Basic Science and Technology Activity books

provided for Primaries 1, 2, and 3 and

distributed to schools all over Nigeria.

• Zonal academic publishing centres are under

construction across the country.

TETFund

• The TETFund (Tertiary Education Trust Fund) comes from a mandatory 2% education tax paid by all registered companies and regulated by the FIRS.

• Over N500 billion has been spent, through the (TETFund) and the special needs assessment fund on various projects to increase access and improve the quality of infrastructure at the tertiary level of our education system.

• The Fund encourages indigenous authorship by sponsoring the development of 107 academic manuscripts into higher education books –resuscitation of 173 institution-based academic research journals, 1408 institution based research projects launch of 33 cutting-edge National Research projects worth N738 million as of November 2014.

The TETFundAcademic Staff Training and Development Programme trained 10,626 academic staff as of November 2014 in local and international PhD and Masters programmes. This benefited a total of 196 tertiary institutions.
