JIS Hickstead Towel RailWith its distinctive pattern perhaps taking inspiration fromone of the more imposing fences at the famous show-jumpingvenue, the Hickstead heated towel rail from JIS Europe’s Sussexcollection is suited to both top end residential and manycommercial applications.

The Hickstead's six arms are square, but are fashioned fromthe same highly durable grade of stainless steel and as withthe rest of the Sussex collection, the Hickstead is available incentral heating, dual fuel or electric only options. The opensided rails with their twin carrier pillars are intended to facilitateeither left or right sided installation. However, architects, interior designers and property owners who might prefer tochoose the electric only version should be aware that theseare supplied in right arm format as standard, with the left armneeding to be specifically ordered.

Depending on the heat source used, the Hickstead offers anoutput of 378 Watts or 1291 BTU, so can provide occupantcomfort when sited in a properly insulated bath or showerroom, as well as keeping towels warm and dry. Overall theHickstead measures 1010 mm in height by 500 mm wide, while the half dozen arms are evenly spaced on the uprights;giving it a stylish as well as functional form.

JIS Sussex Towel Rails couple energyefficiency with elegance

The winter catalogue from JIS Europe Ltd. depicts its SussexRange of elegant stainless steel towel rails with high qualityphotography of sumptuous room settings; while offering a clearinsight as to their technical performance: including details ofthe manufacturer’s new Cylindrical Adjustable Dual Fuel Kits.Going into the depth of the ‘heating season,’ most purchaserswill be relying on their home’s conventional wet central heatingsystem to warm the stylish Sussex towel rails, meaning theywill function during the same on-off cycles as the radiators or

underfloor heating loops. Come the warmer weather of springor summer, however, occupants can turn to the electricallypowered probe of the Dual Fuel Kit to keep their towels dryand bathrooms comfortable.

Employing the rail’s neatly integrated and easily controllableelectric heating element therefore guarantees year-roundconvenience. With the central heating valve (sold separately)connected to the side, via a chrome plated T-piece, the electricheating element is inserted up into the vertical member of thetowel rail. Compatible with the majority of rails in the range, the installed unit also features an array of four small LED lightsto offer instant confirmation of the power setting selected:adjustable in increments of 100 W up to a maximum outputof 600 W. Power can be connected via a standard fused spur.

Hydronik Systemswarm Palmerston FortThe famous Palmerston Forts arranged along the SouthCoast of England were built to be solid enough to resistinvasion by Napoleonic forces, but the resulting thermalmass and exposed locations make them very hard toheat. It is, however, a challenge that has been effectivelymet using a selection of products from Timóleon’sHydronik range linked to a hybrid renewable energysource.

Fort Albert on the Isle of Wight was completed in 1856to defend the Needles Passage, which gives access toPortsmouth with its strategically important navaldockyard. Still in use during World War II, it remained inmilitary ownership until the 1950s, when it was sold andconverted for domestic use. It still offered little comfortfor its occupants until the current owners began acomprehensive refurbishment and improvement projectin 2013 employing locally based Round the IslandBuilders Limited and WJ Wetherick Plumbing & Heatingto install the Timóleon underfloor heating systems. T

he Isle of Wight is actually on course to become the firstzero carbon area of Britain and Fort Albert’s ownersaccordingly commissioned an advanced buildingservices solution, which utilises an air source heat pumpand solar thermal panels to harvest free energy tosupply the heating and hot water.

PV panels also help meet the large home’s electricityneeds, but in order to achieve the most efficienttransference from the heat pump to the occupiedspaces, Wetherick Plumbing and Heating specified theuse of Timóleon’s ToronFloor Batten, ToronFloorSuspended and LowBoardTM systems. Addressing theunusual layout to the former fort with its variations infloor construction, Timóleon’s technical departmentprovided floor-plans showing the positions of the

multiple heating loops and the locations of the Axiosmanifolds, as well as section drawings indicating thedepths of the different layers to the systems.

Across the ground floor, the entrance hall, sitting room,dining-room and kitchen, Wetherick Plumbing &Heating installed both ToronFloor Suspended andToronFloor Batten, with LowBoardTM employed acrossthe concrete slab within the area of the old look-outtower. These were connected up via two Axiosmanifolds: the first feeding a dozen loops containingalmost 700 metres of pipe, while the second had afurther 540 metres in eight loops. Up on the first floor,a further two manifolds feed the underfloor heating infive bedrooms and varying sizes of bathroom all usingToronFloor Suspended. Here nine loops are connectedto one manifold that features just two loops with 123metres of pipe, while the second feeds nine loopsrunning for over 400 metres.

Ubiflex non-leading flashingmakes a complex job simpleCrown Build of Maldon chose Ubbink’s Ubiflex non-leadflashing system for a variety of applications on the newroof at Priory Court, a private development in HatfieldPeverel, Essex. Manufactured from aluminium meshreinforcement, coated with a mixture of modifiedbitumen and additives, Ubiflex is a malleable materialwhich can be used in most applications where lead istraditionally used. It is available in grey, terracotta andblack finishes, in 6m or 12m roll lengths.

The project, for Hatfield Peverel based Top FloorProperty Management, involved flashings arounddormer windows, and other roof features includingpitched roof valleys on the complex roof structure.

Pauline Apthorp of Top Floor Property Management, said: “The roof required different lead code levels from3 to 5 on different areas. Ubiflex is the equivalentthickness of lead code 7/8, so could be used throughout, simplifying costing, specification and the the installationprocess itself.”

Paul Benorthan of Crown Build takes up the story: “Thiswas the first time we’d used Ubiflex and we were veryimpressed. The first thing that struck us was how lightand easy to handle it is compared to lead. Before weeven started work, we were grateful for how quick andeasy it was to get the rolls of Ubiflex up onto the roof.Once the project was under way, in one area, we wereable to fit a continuous twelve metre run.

This saved a huge amount of time and removed theneed for expansion joints, making big material savingsand reducing wastage. We ended up with only 600mm

of excess Ubiflex over the whole project.”

Not only is Ubiflex 80% lighter than lead, it’s alsocompletely non-toxic, so health & safety is improvedon two counts – and the light weight can bringstructural advantages, too.

Another obvious benefit of Ubiflex is that unlike lead, ithas no scrap value so is of no interest to thieves.

It’s a sustainable, recyclable material and carries BBAcertification. In wind tunnel testing at the BRE, Ubiflexhas been demonstrated to resist uplift at wind speedsof up to 110 miles per hour when installed with HighTack, so it can be specified with confidence for virtuallyany application even in coastal areas.

Their Victorian style appearance is particularly suitable inall types of projects but real benefits can be gained byfitting them in to traditional buildings and especially thosethat are listed or situated in a Conservation Area.Because their design is based upon products that wereoriginally made over a century ago they look just right inmany buildings where a later version is perhaps not inkeeping. Modern rooflights are often made from a singlepane of glass with a very slim outer frame and perhaps asimilar opening light. In the past this isn’t how rooflightswere made and so the appearance is perhaps not entirelyright for the property being renovated.

The main advantage of Conservation rooflights is their lowprofile. Unlike other rooflights or skylights which can look‘shoe box like’ on a pitched roof. Conservation rooflightsare fitted flush with the tile or slate, if added correctlythey do not detract from the appearance of your property.Their main distinguishing feature is the ‘T Bar’ down thecentre of the window pane (in the two pane version, threepanes are available) which is taken from the originalpattern, this adds to their character giving a certainspecific ‘charm’!

Clement have a range of Conservation rooflights whichare competitively priced and are available from stock.Bespoke sizes are also offered which can be essential ifyou live in a listed building where you need to replace likefor like. Clement Windows Limited a family ownedcompany, specialise in the design and manufacture ofbespoke steel windows, doors and Conservation rooflights.

Liversidge Windows gets topmarks at Altrincham Grammar

REHAU fabricator Liversidge Windows has furtherstrengthened its growing reputation in the educationsector with an impressive installation at AltrinchamGrammar School for Boys.

The Oldham based company has fabricated andinstalled more than 60 windows in the REHAUTOTAL70C system at the 100 year old school, to replacea mix of timber and early PVC windows which were inplace previously.

The installation was unusual because many of thewindows had triangular tops which had to bemechanically jointed as they were too intricate to bewelded. They were also fabricated with transoms andmullions housing up to 28 individual sealed glazing unitswithin each frame to give them a more authenticappearance than could be achieved with Astragal bars.

The team at Liversidge impressed the EstatesDepartment at the large all boys grammar school bysupplying a sample window for review complete withrestrictor hinges, andby inviting the teamto view forthemselves thefabrication set up attheir Oldham factory.

Stuart Peet, EstatesOfficer, said:“Liversidge Windowsdid a really good joband impressed uswith their expertisein both fabricationand installation.

They were recommended to us by a nearby school and,in turn, we would have no hesitation in recommendingthem to others.”

Liversidge’s other recent successes in the schools sectorinclude installations at: Crompton House School inOldham and at Livingstone Primary and St Georges Cof E Primary in Mossley, Ashton on Mersey school in Saleand Stalyhill Primary in Staylhill.

Liversidge is a REHAU Authorised Partner providing acomplete range of frames in the REHAU TOTAL70Csystem to trade, retail and commercial customers. Thecompany prides itself on the quality of its workmanshipand has a very well equipped factory, complete with inhouse production of sealed units.

Solar PV System forWorld-leading UniversityNew build student accommodation for King’s College,London, one of the world's top 20 universities, benefitted from a solar PV system designed andinstalled by Photon Energy, when it opened inSeptember 2014. Although won under competitivetender, this was repeat business for Photon Energy asthe contractor, Imtech North, now part of the ImtechAqua Group, is a past customer.

The accommodation, known as Champion HillResidence is located in the up and coming Denmark Hillarea of south east London. It comprises four 4-storeyblocks containing en-suite study bedrooms togetherwith residents’ shared kitchen and dining facilities, forover 700 students.

The nature of the building is such that electricity isrequired throughout the day for lighting, computers andall the other electronic or electrical devices thatstudents may need. This is in addition to shared servicessuch as lighting of the corridors.

As with every new build project , the solar PV workprogramme involved phased installation to fit in withthe construction programme on a confined site. Workon site started in February 2014 and was completed inAugust.

Photon Energy handled the entire solar PV installationfrom design to installation and commissioning, alongwith the application to the distribution networkoperator for permission to connect the system to theelectricity grid. “Components were specified on the basisof high performance combined with value for money tosuit the customer’s budget, and this along with closecooperation on site, resulted in an efficient project, completed to budget and on time,” said Photon Energy’s

assistant project engineer Rikki Baker. By selectingUpsolar polycrystalline M-250P panels and highlyefficient Aurora Trio 27.6-TL inverters frommanufacturer, Power One, Photon Energy achieved therequired power output by installing solar PV panels onjust three out of the four blocks.

The company installed 136, 250Wp panels on each ofthree flat roofs, that’s 408 panels in total, to deliver aprojected 90,060kWh/year with an annual carbonsaving of 47.6 tonnes of CO2. Inverters were installedin fourth floor plant rooms and connected todistribution boards on the second floor of each block.

The new Hilti MSP-FR flat roof PV mounting system waschosen as minimal ballast is required, making it suitablefor flat roofs with limited load bearing ability. It was notnecessary to penetrate the roof membrane with thissystem and the tilt angles allow optimum use of theroof area while allowing for a generous flow of air underthe panels, which helps to raise the annual poweroutput.

“Working with Photon Energy, we have found theirapproach to be proactive throughout all project stages, identifying potential cost savings though FIT, aprofessional installation team with a support basedoffice team able to deal with any issues swiftly,” saidChris McPartland, senior contracts manager, ImtechNorth.
