Governor’s Greeting- Nadyli Nunez

April 10th is the mark of the new service year so we have

a little over a month left. Take this time to push in as many

service projects as possible. Let’s end the year strong! Sign some

advocacy letters, plan a fundraiser or volunteer at an event. If

you are stuck on what to volunteer for, contact the clubs in

your Division and see what they are doing.

The Leadership Training Conference is coming up and

there are many downloadable documents for it. Visit

www.nydkc.conference.org to find out how to register. If your

club has already filled the registration out, be sure to have a

say in the future leaders of Key Club. Download the Delegate

Registration Form and have two members represent your club

and cast their vote for the best candidate for the 2011-2012

District Governor, Secretary and Treasurer.

The annual Service Fair at the Leadership Training

Conference is your club's chance to show of an amazing

service project it did. Sign up now to show off your most

inventive and most successful service project to the entire New

York District! Participating in the Service Fair is easy; bring a tri-

fold display board, brochures, souvenirs, a scrapbook, or a

photo montage. Just remember, space is limited, so sign up

now. Ask your Lieutenant Governor for an application or

download one from the New York District Website.

For any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at

[email protected].

Lt. Governor Elect- Annie Porfidio Our last divisional, February 9th, Elections were held. I’m proud to

say that I’m the elected Lieutenant Governor for the upcoming

year. At Sayville high school, before making pillows, we had

elections. I’m excited to get started, and also to become an

awesome Lieutenant Governor. This upcoming year will be

filled with fundraisers and exciting divisionals. Brainstorming

ideas for activities and service opportunities is on my mind.

My goals include lengthening the current lieutenant

governor’s goals. This year I want to continue to improve the

communication between clubs. Unifying is a priority. Another

goal of my own is to make divisionals more entertaining. From

finding fun activities to do to making divisionals feel more like an

occasion. If I can accomplish that, then hopefully the

attendance at divisionals will continue to increase. But

remember, communication is key! If we do not communicate,

these goals can’t be met.

I’m so excited to help you help your communities. We

can help so many people with just a few hours of service. A

little service can go a long way. Once again, I’m eager to start

my journey as lieutenant governor.

DKC Award – Submitting Digitally – By Lieutenant Governor Katie Toomey The Distinguished Key Clubber Application was released October 9, 2010. If you haven’t already seen it, you can access the application on the district website, www.nydkc.org. You’ll notice that this year, we have the option of submitting your applications for the award digitally. If you are considering submitting your application digitally, let me first give you my thanks. Here are the following steps you must take: (Please make sure all text files you create are .doc, .txt, or .pdf files.)

• Create a folder anywhere on your desktop named “[division number] [first name] [last name]”. My folder would be named “11 Katie Toomey”.

• Fill out the application and save it as “DKC App” in the folder. • Create a folder named “Advocacy” in the main folder, and save all relevant advocacy materials in

there. • Create a file named “P Statement” and save it in the main folder. • If you choose to attach a statement answering the “Offices/Positions held within Key Club

International” prompt, name the file “Offices & Positions” and save it in the main folder. • If you have submitted articles to any publications, create a folder named “Articles” in the main

folder, and save up to two articles there. Under each article, write the publication you submitted it to and the date you submitted it.

• If you choose to attach a list of other service and fundraising activities participated in, name the file “Other” and save it in the main folder.

• Ask someone to write you a letter of recommendation. If they agree, tell them to e-mail it to [email protected]. Make the subject of the e-mail “LoR [division number] [applicant’s first name] [applicant’s last name]”. In the body of the e-mail, ask them to list their name and office, and who they are writing the letter of recommendation for.

• Once you’ve completed all that, you will need to e-mail the folder to [email protected]. To e-mail the folder, you will need to convert it to a ZIP file.

o If you are running Windows XP or Vista, right-click the file and go to Send To -> Compressed (zipped) Folder. If you are prompted asking to set “Compressed (zipped) Folder” as the default application for handling zipped folders, click “No.” You will now have a ZIP File which you can attach to an e-mail.

o If you are running a Mac, right-click the file and go to “Create Archive of “[folder name]”. You will now have a ZIP File which you can attach to an e-mail.

o For other operating systems, try googling “convert folders to zip.” If you need assistance, feel free to contact me.

o PLEASE NOTE: If the ZIP File is too large for one e-mail, send the application in multiple e-mails.

• Ask your club president and faculty/Kiwanis advisor to confirm, either via e-mail or phone, that your entire application is valid. They may do this in one of two ways:

o Single verification: Send an e-mail to [email protected] with a subject “Verification [division number] [first name] [last name]”, and the body stating they are verifying all the information in the application is true. You may also call me at (917) 860-3973 with the same information.

o Multiple verifications: Send an e-mail to [email protected] with a subject “Verification [division number] [school name]”, and the body listing all the names of the applicants whose applications they are verifying. You may also call me at (518) 744-2409 with the same information.

Please note – ALL documents (including the verification and letter of recommendation) must be received by 11:59 PM EST on March 14, 2011. Stay on top of your club presidents, advisors, and whoever is writing your letter of recommendation to make sure it is all sent by that time!

If you need any more help regarding digital submission, feel free to e-mail me at [email protected]

Kiwanis Family Relations- Dylan Gross

Calling all Key Clubbers! Calling all Key Clubbers! The

Kiwanis Family Relations Committee is in need of your help!

By the end of the Leadership Training Conference, the

committee is looking to send out a

resource with service spotlight articles of projects from all

over the district that Key Clubbers, such as yourselves have

done with your corresponding Kiwanis Family clubs

(including KKids, Builders, Circle

K, Aktion and Kiwanis.) All articles and a few pictures should

be sent to me at [email protected]. As always,

your articles should also be sent to your Lieutenant

Governor for the divisional newsletter, District Editor Jensen

for the service spotlight resource that is planned for the end

of the year, and District Webmaster Emily Lew to be put on

the district website. This is the perfect opportunity to have

your club's projects out there so that other clubs can

attempt it! When writing your articles, please keep in mind

the guidelines for writing for a newsletter. If you have any

questions, ask me!

The Booklet of Merits- Katie Toomey

Each year the Distinguished Key Clubber Committee helps

to create the New York District Book of Merits as a way to

give members of the New York District a chance to be

recognized for their hard work as Key Clubbers. The Book of

Merits contains valid information on applying for awards

such as the Distinguished Key Clubber Award and many

other prestigious achievements clubs and members can

obtain. This year we have added a few new contests to the

Book of Merits such as the Club T-shirt Contest, the District

LTC T-shirt Contest and a few others. We hope you enjoy

these awards and take the time to apply for them. There are

over 20 different awards to apply for throughout the Booklet

so I am encouraging each and every one of you to give it a

shot. Remember postmark dates vary depending on which

award you are applying for, so head over to www.nydkc.org

and click on the resources and paperwork tab at the top to

check it out! If you have any questions at all please feel free

to contact me at [email protected]. Thank you

Service Spotlight- Emily Lew

I hope since it's near of the Key Club term you all have

done some exciting new things for this organization! Service

Spotlight is the place for you to show off all the great things

you and your clubs have done in the past year, don't be

afraid to submit an article about it so other clubs can use

you ideas and make even more. Only one club per month is

chosen to be the 'spotlight' but definitely more than one

deserves the spot, so if you keep checking out the Service

Spotlight full page, your service project might just be there

already! For the final 3 months, it will be 3 chosen per

month. In order for yours to get picked, not only must you

provide a photo, but your article must be well written as

well. I do not edit your articles at all, so please proofread

them yourselves. All Service Spotlight submissions will now

get a response when received due to confusion, so if yours

is rejected, no worries! Try again! I hope you all have had a

fun and excited Key Club term so far!

New Club Building and Reactivation-James Florakis

We have less than two months left till the 2010-2011 Key

Club year ends! So let's end it with a bang! The New Club

Building and Reactivation Committee, along with the New

York District Board, set the goal to have 27 new Kiwanis

Family clubs by the end of the year. We are about halfway

to our goal. Therefore, we need your help to create more

Kiwanis Family clubs. With the year closing, co-sponsoring K-

Kids and Builders Clubs with your sponsoring Kiwanis is a

great idea! It's easier than starting a Key Club and can

help us achieve our goal. And if you're in the process of

starting a club or you have started a new K-Family club,

please let the New Club Building and Reactivation

Committee know so we can double check that your club is

listed. Lastly, feel free to contact us for new club resources!

We will be uploading a new document to our committee

page on the district site shortly. Thanks and keep up the

good work! Let's reach our goal!

Page 6: February Newsletter

Secretaries - Grace Na Secretaries should be filling out Monthly Report Forms

regularly and on time. Monthly Report Forms are due every

10th of a month if emailed or submitted online, if submitting

by mail it should be postmarked by the 7th of every month. If

you need help filling out your Monthly Report Form there is a

guide on the New York District Key Club website under

resources that will assist you. If you have further questions it is

best to contact me.

If you have trouble filling out the Monthly Report Form on

time please make sure to inform me. I know that many

occasions come unexpectedly, and so please let me know if

you will be handing in your Monthly Report Form late. For

those who have not submitted past Monthly Report Form you

still have time to resubmit them! If the reason you have not

submitted a Monthly Report Forms for certain month is

because there were no events held, it is still important to

submit them.

When submitting a Monthly Report Form please make sure to

send a copy to your Lt. Governor as well as saving a copy for

yourself. It is important to keep a record of all your events

and hours that your club has done over the year.

Public Relations: Zachary Baum The Public Relations Committee realizes the importance of

social networking sites like Facebook in spreading

information such as upcoming events, and urgent updates.

We have begun working with the chairs of the various

committees to provide timely and important frequent

updates on the Facebook Page. We hope that we can

make a difference in providing a much more efficient flow

of information from the District Board to your Club officer

board to the members of the New York District Key Club. We

are also seeking your input in how we can make

communication flow directly to you more efficiently.

Currently the plans are to maintain but improve the current

methods of communication. However, we are open to new

ideas and will be working to find innovative technologies

that can help the clubs promote good public relations. One

such technology is sending mass scheduled texts. Some

devices such as the Verizon Smartphones, and the Apple

Iphone have applications that enable this feature. This is just

one example of a way in which your club can get more

people to come to your upcoming service project. Want

more ideas? If yes, email my or a member of the Public

Relations Committee by going on this website:

http://nydkc.org/board/contacts.

Lindenhurst High School Key Club President Sarah Frohn There are many wonderful advantages that come with being a

part of your high school’s Key Club. One of the best parts about

it is being able to participate in activities and events with other

Key Clubs within our Division. Lindenhurst Key Club is proud to be

part of Division 2. Our Division is truly amazing. Over the years we

have certainly improved in many different areas. One of the

major accomplishments I think we have achieved is being able

to communicate well with each other. Our Lt. Governor,

Stephanie Salinas, has done a great job contacting everyone

within our Division and making sure we all know about upcoming

events. When we meet up for Divisional meetings and projects,

we work well together by introducing ourselves to those we

haven’t met and helping each other out. It’s great being able to

meet other Key Clubs from around the area and hearing about

what their club is doing. It helps give each other new ideas

about what we can do in our own Key Club. Our Division is also

getting better at attending all of these necessary meetings and

events. Even though it’s sometimes hard being able to attend

some that may be far away from our town, our Division does a

great job of having a good amount of members from each

different town at every meeting. If we continue to stress the

importance of these meetings and encourage as many

members as possible to attend, then I’m sure we will have even

more people showing up and having fun. Overall, this year our

Division has definitely made an enormous improvement and I

hope it stays this way for the years to come.

Divisional Family: What we loved and what we’ve learned

William Floyd High School Key Club

President Lauren Miranda

This has been such a successful year for all of us as division two.

Each club individually has been able to grow stronger and more

together because of how unified we’ve become. For William

Floyd in particular, we had the complete support of our division

to help reconstruct our club. Without the help and all the ideas,

we wouldn’t have been able to do succeed. In prior years we

have all built onto what the past officers have established,

starting fresh was a great learning experience for my club.

Leadership and communication was what helped us create the

club we’ve become. We only succeeded because of the

resources given to us by our local Kiwanis and the support of our

division.

Page 8: February Newsletter

Divisional Family: What we loved and what we’ve learned

Patchogue Medford High School Key Club President Christina Heifferon Over the past year our division has grown a lot.

We began the year as a division with little

communication, unity, or events. I am proud to notice

the changes that have occurred through the year. We

have become a strong division with unity,

communication, and strong leaders.

I have come to believe that one of our

greatest improvements has been the increase in

divisional projects. Thought the year we have made

cards, coloring books, and pillow. We have also raised

money for Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center. Each of

these projects joins the members of our division

together and the effects of these projects are endless.

We have formed acquaintances, been introduced to

projects that can be completed at club meetings,

and challenged the leaders within us.

Key Club is all about giving back to our

community, state, country, and world. Through the

completion of divisional projects we are upholding the

objects of Key Club International. We have influenced

the lives of many around the world with our

completed projects and in my opinion this is one of

the greatest accomplishments of our division.

I believe that division 2 has come a long way

since last spring and it is something that we should be

proud of. In my opinion, a division is as strong as its

Lieutenant Governor and division 2 is fortunate

enough to have a great LTG.

Working together with other clubs to make something

as simple as a pillow or a card is a great improvement

for our division. It is nice to be able to join together

with others to complete a service project. Over the

past year our division has gained a strong sense of

unity and that is amazing.

Page 9: February Newsletter

Sayville High School Key Club President Kelly Salloum This has been such a great year for Division II Key

Club! We have grown closer and more connected as a

division, which is not an easy task. We have also grown

stronger as individual clubs and have been able to d o

more to help our communities than ever before.

Communication. This is the key to success, especially

when trying to keep an entire division connected.

Compared to previous years, this year achieved its goal of

bringing the division closer together. This was of course due

to the tireless effort of our Lt. Governor, Stephanie Salinas.

Facebook, text messages, emails, phone calls were

all mediums used by Stephanie to stay in touch with us. This

strategy worked very well and the evidence is in the

attendance at divisionals and the amount of support we

had for group projects. This degree of communication is a

huge achievement for our division and we should be very

proud of ourselves and honored to have such a dedicated

Lt. Governor as Stephanie Salinas.

Congratulations on a great year Division II! It’s not

over yet, but I have no doubt we will finish the 2010-2011

year off strong. I also have every confidence next year’s

Key Club leaders will continue the trend of success this

year’s group exhibited and more.

Divisional Family: What we loved and what we learned

Amityville High School Key Club President Celina Bonilla

I think that Amityville key-club greatest achievement this

year has been (and is) be able to organize our self. Each

officer member knows what to do and how to do it. Last

year, we "suffer" a little bit because there really was not

much organization but this year is different.

Because of this, we are now able to accomplish more task

efficiently and rapidly. The club also has more members

who are also organized and work together as a whole to

perform a better job. The club, as it self, has definitive

achieved many task but all this was all possible thanks to

the organization of all the officers (who I thank).

Page 10: February Newsletter

Bellport High School Key Club Vice President Kristen Hooper

I feel that as a division we have become more

unified. We share our ideas and give each other

new ones. We rely on each other for support. Like,

at our divisionals we are given the chance to meet

new people and learn from what there club is

doing. I feel that we have also become a more

active division. We had a wonderful lieutenant

governor to push us to make ourselves better and

look where we are today..

Divisional Family:

What we loved and what we learned:

Copiague High School Key Club Vice President Jordan Taveras

This year has been a very successful year for the Key

Club in many different aspects. One of our biggest

achievements was our Thanksgiving Food Drive. This

year was our most successful Food Drive thanks to all

of the wonderful people from Walter G. O'connell

High School. What we did in order to encourage

individuals to donate food was that we placed a

box in every home room class and set up a contest,

the homeroom with the most food would win a pizza

party. Some teachers even offered other incentives

for any student that donated food. I found this to be

such a benevolent act. It really touched my heart to

see so many people unified for such a great cause. I

am extremely proud of each and every member of

the Copiague Key Club and the supportive students

and administration, especially with the progress

we've made this year.
