Pet lovers are a breed all their own! We treat our pets as if they are children, definitely a part of our family. When we search for

a new home, we naturally want to be sure our pets are happy and healthy.

If your community is a pet-loving community but you aren’t marketing to pet lovers, you may be missing a HUGE opportunity

to share the benefits of your community.

Where are you advertising?

If your community is a pet-loving community, consider where you are advertising. Did you know that Dogster.com reaches

more than 7 million monthly pet owners with over 200 million ad views? Advertising on Dogster and Catster is an excellent

opportunity to spread the word about your community.

What kind of pet promo’s are you using?

Here are a few ideas for pet-lover promo items – contact your printer for details and imprinting costs:

Dog Bag Holder – attach to leash or belt loop; refillable container (approximately $1.65 each)

2. Collapsible Water Bowl – collapses flat to stow or transport; attaches to backpack or belt buckle (approximately $2.65 each)

Is your apartment community pet-friendly but you don’t have a pet walk? Fresh Patch is an interesting concept for your community. Each patch is 16″ x 24″ of living grass and accommodates a dog up

to 25 lbs. for one week. Because the grass is alive, it naturally absorbs urine and helps minimize odors. The scent of living

grass will attract dogs and puppies.

Here are 3 ideas for your community:

Even if your community has a pet walk, this is a great idea for new puppies, elderly

dogs or even owners that may be late getting home from work. If it is raining or late

Is your community safe for pets in the winter? When the ice gets thick at your community, are you using salt and chloride based melters? When furry residents get the salt on

Other Pet Lover Ideas

Have you ever heard of the *LeashLocket? It is an innovative creation designed to make sure your

pet always has a leash handy. The light-weight, compact, retractable leash attaches to the dog collar

and unsnaps to extend 6 feet. I tried this out on my own dog and it worked well!

Here’s why I liked it: The leash snapped on to Luna’s collar so that when she wanted to run all I had

to do was snap it to her. Then, when I was ready to take her home, all I had to do was unsnap the

LeashLocket and pull it away from her, towards me. Everything fits nicely in the palm of my hand,

so I don’t have this big clunky bar against my knuckles and have the freedom to move around in any

direction. This would make a great resident gift!

Has a resident ever lost a pet at your community? Would you like to try a unique pet resident gift? Try

Have you ever wondered how ApartmentRatings.com calculates their “Recommended By” score? While there’s a lot of math involved, I’ll

give you the scoop: The more recent the review, the more relevant they consider it and will have it “count” more than older reviews. Let’s

make this a game and pretend like reviews are worth points (fun!).

Ok, reviews written between today and 4 years ago are all given points based upon age – today’s review is worth 100 points and a re-

view from 4 years ago is worth 25 points.

Every review written between today and 4 years ago has points somewhere in between depending upon when it was written.

BONUS: Reviews written more than four years ago are GIVEN NO POINTS!

Finally, they take all the points and divide them by the number of reviews and voila! That’s your Recommendation Percentage!

What does all this mean to you and what can you do about it? It means that in order to get, and more importantly KEEP, a high recommen-

dation, you need to consistently have positive reviews and recommendations added to your community. Without that, you are at risk of just

one negative review setting your Recommendation % back years. YEARS!!! GGAAAAHHHHH!

On the other hand…if you have old reviews on there and a low recommendation, I smell an opportunity!! Let’s say things have stabilized at

your community, maybe you’ve even made changes that have your residents really happy…this is an excellent scenario for making a sig-

nificant improvement to your % just by asking some satisfied residents to post some feedback. The exact number needed will vary based on

age of the old reviews and the number of reviews already on there.

I think I see a spreadsheet to calculate it exactly in my future…more on that another day! For now, get to know the game because if you
