April is Volunteer Appreciation Month? We know you appreciate your

Here are five ways to say Thanks-a-Lot, but were sure you can think
of many more! Write them a thank-you note. Its a simple thing to
do, but means so much. Record a video of your troop telling them
how much you appreciate them. Bake them a cakeor cookies,

local newspaper, and tell them how great your leader is! Make up a
skit or song with your troop, and act it out for your leader (make

Industries. The donated items collected during this event are then
sold in GoodwillRetail Stores. The funds generated will provide
local jobs and funding forprograms (i.e. employment and training
programs) and services offeredby Goodwill to people with

to the Topeka Capital Journal The sun was setting over the Pumpkin
Patch in Gardner the evening of Oct. 29 when out of a long black
Suburban jumped a group of peppy girls. "Did you lose something?"
one asked me. I told them that earlier in the day, Id lost my
wedding ring in the field. They immediately got close to the ground
and began fingering through the grass, looking for it. I was
distraught. It was cold and the sky was growing dark. As anyKara
and Cassidy became a team because of their love Brooklynns project

ring but more so because the stone was quite old and previouslyfor
animals. Their project, Have a Heart, Save a Life,worked with
residents at Peterson Nursing Home. She belonged to my husbands
family. It was irreplaceable. I had started losing hope when I
heard a faint voiceraised awareness in their community about the
need fordid a variety of activities such as arts, crafts,
exerciseswhisper, "I found it." As I looked up, her hand shot in
the air victoriously and she exclaimed, "I found it!"animal

Food Drive For a Cause Liberal Girl Scout Junior Troop 60005 and
Brownie troop 60075 Hays and Garden City Regions joined together to
host a food drive at the beginning of the holiday season with all
donations going to the Community Baptist Church food bank. Girl
Scouts are pictured with ladies from the church that came to
collect the food donation: Chris Hammond, Jeanie Cleveland, and
Natasha and Jazmine King. Participation up at 2nd Annual Thin Mint
Sprint Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland hosted the 2nd Annual Thin
Mint Sprint 5K Run/Walk and 1 Mile Fun Run on Saturday, Dec. 4,
2010 in Hays, KS. This year Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland
partnered with Hays Recreation Commission (HRC) making the Thin
Mint Sprint the third race in the HRCs four-5K race series. Due to
the increased awareness of the eventCelebrating Christmasthrough
sponsorships, participation for the event was up by forty-three
Brownie Troop 10163 of Goodland hosted apercent and total event
registrations were up by fifty-six percent.Christmas Party and
earned their Manners try-it badgeChandra Daffer, Community
Development Manager and coordinator ofwith a candle-light dinner,
served by their leaders. Girls the race said, I was ecstatic with
the increase in participation this yearmade ornaments for their
parents, played BINGO to seefor the race. It was great to have
Eagle Communications on board as ourwhat gift they would receive in
the gift exchange, and Gold Mint Sponsor, in addition to all of our
wonderful sponsors, as theywere visited by Santa. The girls played
a game, danced tohelped us create an increased media presence in
our community forChristmas music and had lots of giggles/fun! the
event. One hundred and sixteen individuals bared the cold and wind
toFront Left to Right: Anjel, Atalee, Alexis, Santa, Riley, Jazlyn,
Taytem participate in the 5K Run/Walk, 13 participated in the One
Mile Fun RunBack Left to Right: Ashtin, Keyle, Marizaand eight
individuals took advantage of the Sleep In option. All partici-
pants received a Thin Mint Sprint T-shirt and Girl Scout Thin Mint
cook- ies. Tammy Wellbrock, Hays Area Chamber of Commerce Executive
Girl Scouts help save lives through blood!Director, participated in
the race and said, My original goal was to train and run in a
half-marathon this year; The Girl Scouts of Hays recruited over 40
blood donors resultinghowever after becoming ill I was unable to
fulfill that goal. Then in more pints than an average Blood Drive
for the American Redafter hearing about the Thin Mint Sprint, my
goal changed to Cross in Hays! 24 girls recruited at least one
donor and nine haveparticipate in one major race in 2010. Having
never participated earned the Red Cross Camouflage Cap for
recruiting three or morein a 5K I felt there was a lot of
excitement and peer support, which donors. Rachael of Troop 10059
and Avin of Troop 10027 tied for made it a very energizing event.
Finally, I must say that nothing is top recruiters with four donors
each. more motivating than a Girl Scout cookie waving and cheering
me on during the race. Actually I dont know how any other race will
top being able to eat Thin Mint cookies at the end. Race results

Drop. Girls passed out over 400 invitations to page.donate blood to

local Boy Scout group. 9. Beloit Girls Give to Project LinusBrownie
Troop #20650 from Beloit, Kansas recently completed several
blankets for the Project Linus chapter in Salina RegionHays, KS.
For the past 4 years this troop has been making blankets and
completing this project. The girls cant waitto get started each
year, said Troop Leader Terry Clingman.The blankets are given to
children who are ill. Project Linus mission is to provide love, a
sense of security, warmth andcomfort to children who are seriously
ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts of new,
handmade blanketsand afghans, lovingly created by volunteer

project for your own troop or family. Chapman Juniors Complete
Eco-Related Badgework Troop 20179, for completion oftheir Eco-Sense
Badge, collected160 pounds of trash from theircommunity and took
the itemsto the Fort Riley Recycling Centerwhere they were able to
see thedifferent machines that recycletrash. As part of this visit,
the girlswere also able to see the outcomeof the recyclable items
theycollected.In addition to their recyclingfield trip, the girls
traveled toManhattan to visit aClimatologist at KansasState

Riley Elementary Outreach Troop has grown to over 45 members strong
