Turning passion into profit

It is no secret that we are about to find ourselves going into another economic recession. There are so many questions we want to ask and continually ask one another everyday. at criticising the people claiming benefits, when realistically many of them are gen-uine, honest people clutching at straws as jobs become less and less apparent.

With Global companies such as Tesco, Asda, Apple & McDonalds all taking such a large chunk of their targeted market, it leaves a very small percentage of the market to smaller businesses. Similarly with an increase in people deciding to do a lot of their spending online, it takes people off the streets and therefore a reduction in demand for certain products and services provided by SME’s. Small businesses are the core to economic growth of this country and creating some sort of stability for the economy.

Let’s look at how SME’s employ more than 50% of the labour force in the private sector, and 6% of the higher growth rate businesses generated half of new jobs offered.

Let’s look at how SME’s employ more than 50% of the labour force in the pri-vate sector, and 6% of the higher growth rate businesses generated half of new jobs offered. It is the growth engine of the economy, as hopefully these new jobs a percentage will be given to young people, which will give them the “want” to continue working and strive to a better life as we can educate them about the importance of work. Let us turn that pas-sion into profit.

It is key to get people back out to small businesses spending money in their local areas, creating more money for small businesses therefore giving them the means to expand, creating new jobs for the local people in the process. It is these tiny steps that make the difference. Get back out there and buy from local people and local businesses. You need to help, the government cannot make us spend money. We are in recession regardless of how many times you complain to your friends and family. But what you can do, is make rational and analytical decisions to go out and spend your money in an economical way.

What are you doing to support local business? Are you guilty of giving to the global market ?

The British economy needs to start turning its back on global companies tak-ing large chunks of the British market. We are a nation in need. To make us a nation of prosperity and hope, we need to be-

come selfish, become more self sufficient by using its own produce and using more British sourced materials, products and services. Belief is something the govern-ment need to deliver more of. Releasing funds to give people the opportunity to grow and nourish their business will be a major factor in whether or not we start making steps in the right direction. Why has the government not put more pres-sure on the banks to lend again? If there is more money going to the tax man, and less coming to me and you; why would anyone want to work?

What are you doing to support local business? Are you guilty of giving to the global market ?

hat is being healthy? One thing people lack in their diet is vitamins & minerals.

With fried foods and manufac-tured artificial foods becoming more commonplace and more accessible the human body is continually being deprived of essential vitamins and minerals. Therefore the body cannot func-tion at its optimum. No wonder people find it very hard to moti-vate themselves, when half the time they are feeling tired.

I am always tired after a McDonalds Laura Todd, 35

This is due to the fact that the heat generated from fast foods creates carcinogens which can cause cell damage, leading us to feel lethargic. Everything in the body is made up of cells and every single cell will use vitamins and minerals to function properly. For all you smokers out there, cigarettes are dramatically lower-ing your vitamin C levels. Vitamin C is a fundamental antioxidant for helping to kill off carcinogens, this is why we always see cancer fighting foods being extremely high in antioxidants. Antioxidants will not only help fight cancer, it will help with fatigue, muscle soreness and prevention of dis-eases such as Glaucoma.

Understanding the impor-tance of vitamin support can make a huge difference in the way you feel day to day. For example lets look at the benefits of vitamin support and see how it could change your life. Have you got bleeding gums ? It is more than likely due to low levels of Q10, and other vitamins. Have you suffer from cramps, nerves twitches or muscle soreness ? A sure sign that your body is lacking magnesium. Try bath salts high in magnesium to help with these issues.

OrangesOranges are a vital source of vitamin C. Without vitamin C the body cannot absorb iron efficiently and lead to fatigue. It is also useful as a powerful antioxidant after exercise to kill off any free radicals to increase muscle recovery and reduce lactic acid build up.

CauliflowerA high source B- complex vitamins and vitamin K. These vitamins help regulate bodily functions such as the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. They have to be sourced from external sources and you should feel an increase in energy and general mood throughout the day.

ChilliesChillies contain capsaicin. This is a thermo genic compound that will increase the body’s core temperature as it gets the heart pumping more blood. Lets burn those calories people. (Add chillies to an omelette).

PlumsA great source of Vitamin A & dietary fibre, they can aid in digestion of foods. It is vital to get fibre into the diet to help with bloating, I.B.S and other digestive illnesses. Vitamin A will help protect against eye conditions like cataracts due to its antioxidant properties.

Not to mention nuts!

Nuts are a great source of natural vitamins, protein, fiber and antioxidants.

Any nutritionist will tell you that nuts are a great to snack on, they will help to fill you up quicker and they are great for your heart, health and great snacks if you are trying to loose weight.

Nuts have been shown to lower cholesterol; reduce the risk of heart disease, plaque accumulation and help in aid-ing in a healthy diet.

The human body needs fat in the diet to function and regulate body temperature. It is essential to provide the body with good fat and nuts are a great source of pro-viding polyunsaturated and

monounsaturated fats. These fats will go into the body in liquid form and it means we can start using them more ef-ficiently as energy, rather than saturated fats which are much more compact and solid so you will find it hard to break down and use as energy. The body does not want to work very hard to get energy.

Always make sure you choose natural foods.

Buy from health food stores such as real foods or Holland & Barrett and buy brands such as Meridan.

When reducing calories al-ways choose almonds instead of peanuts. I know it is painful but trust me you will reap the rewards.

“A bite of Fair Trade chocolate means a lot to farmers in developing countries. It opens the doors to development and gives children access to healthcare, education, and a decent standard of living.”

Fair trade is a growing international movement to guarantee that producers in poor countries receive a fair price for their goods. It means that workers benefit from a decent wage and

working conditions and that the price they receive for their goods reflects the true cost of production. It also allows for investment in safe water supplies, sanitation, healthcare and education.

Edinburgh received its Fairtrade City Status from Harriet Lamb, Director Fairtrade Foundation at an event in the Filmhouse in February 2004.

Thrifty tips and old-fashioned advice for the modern household

Use white vinegar to lift limescale from stainless steel sinks and plugs. Leave it to act before scrubbing off.

To remove lingering smells from the microwave, place half a lemon in a bowl of water and heat on low power for a couple of months. Place the other half in another bowl of cold water in the fridge to remove smells.

Don’t pour hot fat down the plughole as it can solidify and block pipes. Instead mix it with cheap oatmeal and let it set hard and scatter in the garden for the birds.

Put fresh mint on the windowsill to deter flies.

Rub chopping boards with a cut lem-on to get rid of onion or fish smells.

Shine your shoes with the inside of a banana skin. Allow it to dry then buff with a soft cloth.

Flowers will last longer if they are placed in half lemonade, half water.

Use car wax to shine up the front of tired looking white goods like fridges and washing machines.

Sprinkle a little bicarbonate of soda into trainers as a great chemical-free deodorant.

The Scottish government has published figures indi-cating that 26 hospitals in

Scotland now provide only single rooms for patients.

It has said not having to share sleeping space with others helps to protect the dignity of patients.

Healthcare-associated infec-tions are said to be reduced by single rooms.

Former single rooms make a significant contribution towards reducing the patient’s risk of contracting and passing on an avoidable infection.

In 2008 Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon announced that single rooms would become the norm in Scotland for new and refurbished hospitals.

Throughout Scotland’s 218 hos-pitals, 32% of the total beds are now in single rooms.

Health Secretary Alex Neil said: “Single rooms provide a better and safer environment for patients

and will enhance their experience during their stay in hospital.

“More importantly, single rooms make a significant contribution towards reducing the patient’s risk of contracting and passing on an avoidable infection.”

No adult patients sharing rooms in the biggest hospital un-der construction in Scotland, the South Glasgow Hospitals campus.

Independent Living Services is expanding in Edinburgh, West Lothian and East Lothian.Workers will be fully trained

to provide care for the elderly and disabled in their homes.

A good community spirit can help lots of elderly people with visits from family and neighbours but a little more is needed in certain cases.

The jobs involve dropping in to support several different people during each day, working on a rota and shift system.

Scott Christie, chairman of ILS Scotland, said: “Scotland’s elderly population is predicted to rise by more than half a million over the next two decades.

“This is leading to increased de-mands on care at home services, which are becoming more vital than ever before, and which can help support older people to live in their own homes rather than in long-term residential care.

“A little bit of help can go a long way towards maintaining an independent lifestyle, and this is exactly where we fit in.”

Scotland’s elderly population is predicted to rise by more than half a million over the next two decades

He added: “Our employees support people with some of the everyday tasks we all take for granted, such as bathing, shop-ping, domestic chores and cook-ing meals. Companionship is also very important.”

Recruitment days are being held at various locations across the Lothians over the coming weeks.

An INSPIRATIONAL Edinburgh Napier student is travelling to Kenya to provide electricity to a rural primary school.

Robert Turnbull (22), first met the pupils and staff of Nado En-terite Primary in 2010 when he spent 8 weeks teaching there as part of a charity project.

So eager to help improve con-ditions at the school, on his re-turn from Africa, Robert dropped out of plans to study Economics at University and instead started an engineering course.

I didn’t think I would be that useful to anyone in this current climate with a degree in Economics and wanted to be able to help other people

He said: “I didn’t think I would be that useful to anyone in this current climate with a degree in Economics and wanted to be able to help other people.”

Now in his third year, studying Energy and Environmental En-gineering, he will return to the Kenyan village in January to in-stall a 400 watt solar PV system.

The technology will sup-ply uninterrupted power to the school for the first time.

South-African born Robert said: “The school has been re-lying on an old, oil generator for power. The fuel is expensive and it breaks down constantly, meaning the staff have to call out an engineer to come and fix it which takes ages and is really costly.

“When the fuel runs out the parents are asked for money to buy more. Most families can’t af-

ford to pay for school lunches never mind oil, so it will make a huge difference having a free power source.”

Three-hundred youngsters from the age of 5 to 18 study at the school which lies in the which lies in Kajiado district, south of Nairobi.

The new solar power system will replace a smaller 80 watt panel which Robert installed back in the summer.

Robert, who also works part-time in Tesco, said: “I paid for my flights myself but held an Indian meal in a local restaurant as a fundraiser, collecting about £460 for the equipment for the initial solar PV system and to pay a local family to host me.

Three-hundred youngsters from the age of 5 to 18 study at the school which lies in the which lies in Kajiado district, south of Nairobi.

“It gives the school two hours of light a day which means they can hold revision night-classes. Before, the classes would be cancelled if the generator failed or ran out of fuel, which was pretty common.”

In the Kenyan education system children must pass ex-

ams before progressing to High School. The night-classes can prove essential in helping youngsters meet the minimum criteria as many can’t make day-time lessons as they are forced to care for sick relatives or to work to help bring in money for their families.

For his next visit in the New Year, Robert has secured a num-ber of grants to pay for the solar power-system’s upgrade.

Edinburgh Napier’s Student Grant Initiative has awarded Robert £700 while the Univer-sity’s Institute for Sustainable Construction is covering the

£563 transport costs. He said: “I hope the new sys-

tem will help the school eventu-ally make an income too. They will be able to allow locals to charge their mobile phones at the site for a small fee.

“The energy will also power a new plug socket. My intention is to get the school a radio to plug in. The government broad-casts some school lessons on a national radio station, so older members of the community can come and learn here too”.

Edinburgh Napier Engineering lecturer Dr. Tom Grassie said: “It is really great to see Robert us-ing what he is learning here to benefit others. He is a really mo-tivated student and a credit to himself and to the University.”

Robert will fly out to Africa on the 5th January before returning to Edinburgh on 19th January.

And by sourc-ing food locally they are support-ing local business. How are you helping?

Reviews “I am quite a fussy person when it comes to food as I find it difficult to deal with spicy foods, but I asked one of the waiters for very specific requirements and the chef made my Dupiaza with a milder sauce , and it was absolutely exceptional.”

Reviews “I’d recommend this place to all but it was especially good fun as a family. Service was good and fast enough to keep the starving youngsters happy. Pleased to see some different items on the menu - enjoyed trying the lollipop chicken and the chilli paneer. But the more standard dishes were good too, I really liked the buttered chicken. The portions are a bit smaller than in a standard restaurant but that’s the whole idea, smaller and cheaper, so you can try more than one. Seating is plain with knives , forks, napkins and corkscrew (BYOB) in the middle of the table but I’m pleased to say, despite the informality, you still get nice white warm china plates! We will definitely be back.”

Amazing. This is the second time we have used 3D Cakes and they just get better. My wife and I bought a cake for our daughters birthday, and it was just amazing. The staff were so helpful and they even indulged our quirky little requests. Its so nice to be able to get something that is not only beautiful, but also so personal too. Our daughter was over the moon with her cake, and it was the talk of the party. My wife and I just cant get enough of these cakes. And they taste as good as they look!

We serve Polish dishes and soups as well as sweet and savoury crepes. Here at Yellow Bench, we make sure all our food is fresh and healthy - we don’t use a microwave, use only a pinch of salt, and only use free range eggs for our crêpes.

Reviews This reataurant is really nice and cosy, the staff are really nice and freindly. The food is fantastic if you like French crepes then you will love it. Also it serves great Polish food which is just as great. Great art work on the walls and is good for kids too with books and toys. Coffee also fab.

Q When I turn my

computer on the time

and date needs to be

re-set. How can I stop

this from happening?

A The date and time are man-aged by a chip on your motherboard called the CMOS. There is a small bat-tery that keeps the time and date going when you turn off your computer. Simply replacing the CMOS battery will sort this problem. You will find the CMOS battery on your motherboard of your PC - it is easy to find as it looks like a shiny 10p piece. Once you take this out just buy a replacement and pop it back in. It is usu-ally a CR2032 battery. The CMOS on a laptop is more difficult to access and that would need to be taken to a computer shop for advice.

Q I used to have the recycle bin on my desktop until re-cently when it disappeared and I don’t know how to get it back. I am using Win-dows 7.

A In both Windows 7 and Win-dows Vista you can choose what Icons you have on the desktop. To do this right click on the desktop that’s the picture you see when you turn on your computer) and select personalise. Next look to the left hand column and click on “change desktop icons”. Then tick the box next to the icons that you want. You will notice that recycle bin is probably un ticked so re-tick the box. Make sure you then click “apply” before you say OK. Your recycle bin should now be back on your desktop.

Q Every time I turn my com-puter on Skype starts au-tomatically. How do I stop this from happening as I don’t always want skype to be running.

A Double click on your Skype icon to have it open in front of you. Then click on Tools and choose Options. Then in General Settings un-tick “Start Skype when I start Windows.” Click Save at the bottom right corner of that

screen. Next, sign out of Sky-pe. When you re-start Skype, un-tick the “Sign Me In When Skype Starts” underneath where you input your pass-word. Restart your pc and skype won’t be running.

Q I have just bought a new computer running win-dows 7. I want to set up my email in Outlook Express but I can’t seem to find it.

A This is a very common ques-tion from people who have upgraded from Windows XP to Windows Vista And Win-dows 7. Outlook Express is no longer available as Mi-crosoft have replaced it with windows live mail which will do all the things that Outlook Express did before. You can also import all your outlook express contacts and emails into Windows Live Mail. To get Windows live mail clock start on your Windows 7 computer (it’s the round icon with the flag inside it) at the bottom left hand corner of the screen. In the little search box that appears just above the start button type “Mail” and then click on the link to “windows Live Mail” that will appear above what you have typed. You will then be taken through a set-up process to add you email accounts.

Q I have just started using Mozilla Fire-fox as I was advised by a colleague that it was better, faster and safer than internet explorer. The problem is that I can’t find all the favourites that I had stored even though I saw it “exporting them” as I was installing Firefox. Do you know how I can get them back?

A The favourites will have been copied over but the problem you are having is a common one. Firefox calls its fa-vourites “Bookmarks” so you will need to click on the bookmarks link from the menu bar and all your stored favourites will appear in there.

Q When I use the internet my page used to open up as Google which I like.

Recently it changed to something else and I don’t know how to get my Google page back and it’s very annoy-ing.

A Open Internet Explorer and click on tools then go down to “Internet Op-tions” when the box opens up you will see “home Page” and the address of the page that you don’t want. Simply scroll over what you don’t want. Delete then type www.google.co.uk. You can type in any web site address to use as your “home Page” so for example if you wanted to see BBC News every time you open the internet. Type in www.bbc.co.uk/news instead of the google address. Then Click apply and OK. Now when you re-open your browser the homepage of your choice will appear.

It may be MiNUs̊ but you have to look hOTWinter is a great excuse to wear more clothes

facebook.com/theagencyscotland

Lets face it.. it’s never easy to look great at this time of year when you have to layer up and sadly do not (as few of us do) have the skills to effortlessly remove clothing a la Kim Basinger in 9 1/2 Weeks! However, do not fret – there are still people helping us look smart, sexy and sophisticated – even in the dark-est depths of winter!I live in Stockbridge, it’s an amazingly quaint little village part of Edinburgh. Everyone knows everyone else and pretty much their brother, grand-mother, dog and cat too. We do have the most eclectic collection of in-dependent boutique shops as a plus side. These are allprivately owned & run by individuals that have a love for fashion within an affordable and attainable bracket.(1) This Doggie Print Jumper from Hibiscus Flower It’s a ladies fit, and even better, hand knitted in Nepal for People Tree, so your social con-science gets a big fuzzy glow too. Oo talking of fuzzy glow – how warm would you be in this faux-fur coat from Eden? (2) Layer it up with this knitted tri-colour scarf from Lilies & Dreams (3) add some fabulous opera length gloves and you won’t even worry about bad weather.*

Word of encouragement, don’t forget the accessories! If we’re layering, then layer! Add a statement necklace, collar or bangle (4). Wear it loud and proud on top of your multiples of fabric and if anyone asks, demand to know why they haven’t kept up with the street styling of Amsterdam.Don’t get me wrong, I love a good rendition of ‘You can leave your hat on’ as well as the winter woollens, but I am pushing myself towards the Spring/Summer Collections in the hope I can remove my Hunters, even for one walk with the dog, to em-brace the SS13 collections.

Who says having great skin has to involve plastic surgery, pricey products or a bona fide miracle? In the hopes of finding some soft-skin shortcuts for us real girls take a look at the tips provided by the Biz Beauty expert! We may not see the sun too often in the Capital of Scotland but sun protection is essential for nice skin, so don’t be afraid to lather up! If you smoke, quit. Eat blueberries and other fruits with rich color, which are full of antioxidants. Deep red, yellow and green vegetables are also good. (Take a look at our fruit and veg section to find out more, pg. 6) Stay hydrated and don’t overdo it on the alcohol and caffeine! Get enough sleep. Most of us do not. The old saying “I need my beauty sleep” couldn’t be more relevant. Cut out the crisps and chips, avoiding salty foods and other water-retention traps can help decrease the appearance of cellulite. Something fishy? Omega 3 and 6 fish oils help create an oil balance in the skin, so fill up on starflower oil and salmon! Find a good exfoliator, try a sugar scrub to keep you skin looking sweet! And don’t forget to moisturise thoroughly afterwards!

Running for just half an hour was found to improve your reaction times and reasoning

skills. Weight training had no such mind-altering effects. And it’s a gift that keeps on giving. Studies in the Journal Neurology found that those who stay active keep their marbles for longer: participants who were the least active had over double the risk for Alzheimer’s.

To burn fat all day, run for 45 minutes to boost the burn-rate for up to 14 hourse. That’s an ex-tra 190kcal per day burned on top of the energy the exercise used.

Running for 30 minutes 4 times a week is a great way to escape negative thought pat-

terns by forcing you to focus on the here-and-now. According to psychologists it helps you to stay calm and deal with life’s little stresses. Even clynically de-pressed people who exercise are statistically more likely to recover than those who rely on medica-tion alone.

Over a lifetime runners live significantly longer. They also stay fully mobile for around 16 years longer than people who sit around all day. The running limits the negative effects of premature ageing at a cellular level - less greying, more muscle and higher fertility in later years.

With all the benefits to gain from the activity, it’s time to give it a go. You can do it.

Run for your lifeRunning is good for much more than burning calories. It makes you smarter, calmer and will extend your life

“six packs are made in the Kitchen.”

Do you fall into the category of moving into the new year aim-ing to get into “shape”? It’s that time of year again where I get asked the same questions over and over again. In this article I hope to clear some issues up for people and cover some of the most frequently asked questions.

How can I lose weight after Christmas ?Laura, 35.

This is a question that I get asked every single day in the weeks after Christmas. First of all, you need to be honest with yourself and say, “ am I willing to make sacrifices and dedicate myself to a training regime & diet plan?” Changing your body shape is a lifestyle change, not a 12 week rent a body programme. Then you need to seek advice from a professional and get a diet plan, training regime and a kick up the backside. To lose weight we want to burn

off fat and retain lean muscle. To do this we need to increase our metabolic rate and get our engine burning calories efficiently. A great way of doing this will be through metabolic circuits, HIIT ( High Intensity Interval Training) & super sets in a tailored resistance programme. This will dramatically increase your heart rate and get your blood pumping harder to shed those pounds. Now we must look at your diet. How many calories do you need to take on board ? And how much of each macro nutrient you need to take on board and at what time ?

I tend to be very blunt and with losing weight you need to “lift the bar and eat the chicken”. Chicken is a high source of natu-ral protein, providing all essential amino acids for recovery and building muscle. Protein is also very hard to digest, so your body will expend more energy digest-ing it. Therefore it can be classed as thermogenic. Get some spices onto your chicken and get that temperature rising. Burn calories whilst you eat.

What supplements should I take? Mike 21.

Now there is many supplements out there that people buy, expecting miracles to happen. I am not saying that supplements are not useful. They can be crucial. They are excellent sources at providing the body with essential vitamins, minerals and nutrients to keep the body functioning properly. Here is a list of supplements that I take:

Whey proteinL-arginineL-glutaminel-CarnitineMutli-vitsGlucose PowderCreatine MonohydrateBCAAs ( Branched chain amino Acids).Vit CZincZMA

Now it is not necessary for everyone to take all of these supplements. But Whey Protein

for example is a quick acting protein and essential for post-workout recovery. The body craves nutrients after the gym and the quicker you get them in, the better.

HOWEVER, we do not want to expend the protein as energy. We want to get it to the mus-cles. So we need to replenish glycogen levels by getting some fast acting sugar in there too. Glucose powder is a great way of doing this.

A brand new centre for Entrepreneurs

trepreneurs from its own alumni, helping more than 200 business-es since 2003 through its Moffat Centre and recently launching Bright Red Ventures, an incubator space for computing and creative industries students.

“Their ethos is a very good fit with our own and I believe the partnership will provide a number of opportunities for both organisations, whether helping fledgling businesses tap into the University’s resources or allowing our own graduates and students to better develop their business ideas.”

Professor Dame Joan Stringer, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Edinburgh Napier University, said: “Encouraging and helping our students to be more confident, creative and entrepreneurial is at the heart of what we do at Edinburgh Napier, which is why we are so pleased to be able to support Entrepreneurial Spark in Edinburgh.

“Their ethos is a very good fit with our own and I believe the partnership will provide a number of opportunities for both organisations, whether helping fledgling businesses tap into the

University’s resources or allowing our own graduates and students to better develop their business ideas.”

ESpark’s existing two centres in Glasgow and Ayrshire, opened in October 2011 and March 2012 respectively, have supported more than 140 start-ups, with several having already progressed beyond the programme after receiving significant investment and deals with major compa-nies. Much of ESpark’s success is down to it accepting entrepre-neurs from all sectors so long as they can display a high level of ambition, aptitude and a viable business plan.

The idea of supporting entre-preneurs and local businesses in order to boost Scotland’s economy is one which the City of Edinburgh Council has already embraced. The Council’s decision to invest a significant six-figure sum to meet the set-up and running costs of ESpark’s Edin-burgh hatchery compliments the organisation’s existing economic strategy which pledges to sup-port Edinburgh-based businesses.

Cllr Frank Ross, Convener of the Economy Committee, said: “Working with our partners to support businesses and create new jobs is at heart of our new Strategy for Jobs. It is vital that we nurture today’s entrepreneurs to ensure that we create new businesses to contribute to the health of Edinburgh’s economy in the future.”

ESpark is seeking applications from entrepreneurs across Scot-land who are ready to take the next step to running their own successful business by becoming

South Gyle will become home to up to 50 of the

most ambitious start-up businesses in the east of Scotland when Entrepre-neurial Spark, Scotland’s first free business incu-bator and accelerator programme, opens its new Edinburgh ‘hatchery’ in the New Year.

Entrepreneurial Spark (ESpark) will open its Edinburgh hatch-ery on 4th February at a site provided by Edinburgh Napier University and supported by City of Edinburgh Council. Resident start-up businesses at the new centre will also be supported with advice from well known entrepreneur and

philanthropist Dr Ann Gloag. Applications from entrepre-

neurs in the east of Scotland are currently being sought. Those interested are encouraged to apply soon in order to guarantee a place in the selection process and have a chance of becoming a member of the ESpark com-munity.

Information and advice on how to apply can be found at: www.entrepreneurial-spark.com

The new centre will use the same template as ESpark’s exist-ing hatcheries in Glasgow and Ayrshire which provide expert business mentoring support in fully serviced office facilities at no cost to start-up businesses.

The infrastructure and build-ing for the new hatchery is being provided by Edinburgh Napier University. A number of

sites in South Gyle are currently under consideration with a final decision on the exact location expected early in the New Year.

The positivity and go-do attitude shown by the entrepreneurs in our centres can help to overcome the negativity which currently surrounds much of our economy and give it a kick-start.

The University has its own track record of supporting en-

part of the ESpark programme. The creation of a presence in

the east of Scotland will allow a number of start-up businesses currently based at ESpark’s Glas-gow hatchery to relocate, saving time and commuting costs.

Jim Duffy, co-founder of En-trepreneurial Spark, said: “When we had our vision for creating a entrepreneurial renaissance in Scotland it was always our aim to be able to provide support to ambitious start-ups in every area

of the country. The opening of our Edinburgh hatchery brings that dream closer to reality and we believe this new centre will strengthen the success we have already delivered in Glasgow and Ayrshire.

“The positivity and go-do attitude shown by the entrepre-neurs in our centres can help to overcome the negativity which currently surrounds much of our economy and give it a kick-start. The support of organisations and people like Edinburgh Napier University, City of Edinburgh Council and Ann Gloag is invalu-able in allowing us to enable the next generation of successful Scottish business people who will provide jobs for our local com-munities.”

As well as receiving the full support of local councils, established businesses and other key stakeholders, each of

Espark’s centres is supported by a renowned entrepreneur-in-residence. The Glasgow centre is represented by Sir Willie Haugh-ey, founder of City Refrigera-tion, while Ayrshire has Sir Tom Hunter, founder of Sports Divi-sion. E-Spark is also supported by RBS which provides ongoing sup-port with banking mentors in the Hatchery every week, access to business networks for start-ups, as well as money for prizes which go direct to the businesses.

The Edinburgh ‘hatchery’s’ suc-cessful entrepreneur-in-residence will be Dr Ann Gloag who helped build the Stagecoach Group from humble beginnings into one of the world’s largest providers of transport services.

Dr. Gloag, who is also an Edin-burgh Napier University honorary graduate, said: “For our economy to prosper, it is important that the private, public and third sectors work in unison, and the new hatchery is an excellent example of that in action.

“It is exactly the sort of initiative that I’m proud to be able to sup-port and I am very much looking

forward to passing on whatever advice and encouragement I can to some of Scotland’s next generation of entrepreneurs and wealth creators.”

“The positivity and go-do attitude shown by the entrepreneurs in our centres can help to overcome the negativity which currently surrounds much of our economy and give it a kick-start. The support of organisations and people like Edinburgh Napier University, City of Edinburgh Council and Ann Gloag is invaluable in allowing us to enable the next generation of successful Scottish business people who will provide jobs for our local communities.”

Established in 2007 , the empha-sis is on unusual, intelligent and topical selections of new titles to give the customer a clever, and refreshing choice. If Radio 4 was a bookshop, it would be like this.

With a comfy sofa for you to read on, the Edinburgh Bookshop is staffed by friendly booklovers who are always happy to help.

Eccentric young business man, Mukta Hussain along with passion-ate business partner

Rizvi Khaleque came up with a fantastically unique idea and brought it from the streets of India to the capital of Scotland.

Mukta, who was born in Edinburgh, now aged 23, started working alongside his father in the hospitality industry from a young age. Following his graduation from Napier University with a degree in accountancy, in 2011, Mukta continued working at Lancer’s Brasserie, an estab-lishment first opened by his father back in 1985, when his father was just 22. Now armed with ACCA qualifications, Mukta’s hope is for his revolutionary restaurant to be in every major city. Rizvi Khaleque, born in Bangladesh in 1989, came to Edinburgh in 2001. He attended Regents Business School in London, which he graduated from in 2011 with an International Busi-ness degree.

Rizvi’s family live in Bangladesh but they visit regularly and are very proud of the pairs achievement.

Rizvi’s family live in Bangladesh but they visit regularly and are very proud of the pairs achievement. Rizvi’s sharp-minded business acumen was gleaned from his father, who he describes as a tough, keen, acute businessman. Rizvi has always been

involved in the family business and learned key traits and skills from his family, experi-encing the practical workings of business.

Mukta and Rizvi have been good friends for many years and had talked about opening their own restaurant after univer-

sity since they were boys. This was their goal and they were extremely determined and passionate about getting to where they needed to be. The partners did not just want to open an Indian restaurant which served curry, they wanted to open an authentic Indian street food bar where people could experience the true taste of India. In search of inspiration, the two headed off to the streets of India where they plucked ideas and concepts from street vendors and railway station dishes. The unique design of the restaurant was extracted from the heart of India and the name of their restaurant was born; TUK TUK, after two years of hard work, the pair finally opened their dream restaurant at 1 Leven Street, Edin-burgh. Mukta and Rizvi have created some-thing truly unique and revolutionary. They plan to have a TUK TUK in every major city, allowing every-one to try and enjoy their one of a kind din-ing experience.
