Washington State Learning Standards
Below are 5 ways that children and parents can become better readers outside of school:1. Set goals: Goals are a way to not only see
where we want to be, but also lets oth-ers know what we are trying to accom-plish. As a family, set a goal for reading. This should be a goal for your combined family- everyone participates! Your goal could be for how many minutes to read in a week or how many total pages or books can be read.
2. Use time wisely: Have 20 minutes before you need to leave for school? Instead of channel surfing, spend that time reading! Picking up a book is a perfect activity for any amount of time, and having a set end time is often encouraging for young or struggling readers.
3. One family, one topic: Since you are working as a family towards one goal, why not read about the same thing? Have multiple family members read their own level of book around a similar topic. Then everyone can take part in a discussion about what they’re reading and learning!
4. Have a Book Night: We all have movie nights, so how about a book night? Make it exciting by setting up a tent or making a fort, laying pillows and blankets on the floor. Get in cozy pajamas and read all together. You can switch between reading a picture book aloud and some indepen-dent reading time.
Brag about it! It is encouraging to see how much you’re doing! Have children start a list or tally of all of the books or pages they have read. Post it somewhere for all family mem-bers to see. When family and friends come over, brag about all that your family has been reading!
