Welcome to the February edition of Shoparound magazine. I would
like to start off by thanking all at Birmingham City Council, the
local NHS, West Midlands Police, West Midlands Fire Authority and,
most of all, the many contributing businesses, who all have
provided their support in publishing this community monthly
magazine since October 2012. I would also like to personally thank
all our staff members for their continued hard work in making sure
that the magazine is printed and distributed on time.
Well, were officially two month into 2013 right around the time
when most of us are either feeling pretty positive about our New
Years resolutions or ready to throw them out the window
entirely
We at Shoparound are pretty positive the Shoparound magazine
will help our local businesses achieve their goals.
Shoparound is pleased to announce that the online version of the
magazine will be available at www.shoparoundin.com from this
month.

TWO West Midlands Police officers are to be awarded the forces
top honour for extreme bravery in tackling a knifeman who doused
his partner with white spirit before threatening to torch her
home.
PCs Ben Taylor and Jasvir Rattan will collect Chief Constables
Commendations at a special ceremony tomorrow night (Jan 16) in
recognition of their actions in disarming the 38-year-old before he
was able to carry out his threats. And theyll be joined by fellow
Commendation recipients PC Andrew Pooler and PC Bruce Howell who
pick up the accolade for arresting a machete-wielding man who
threatened passers-by in Nechells. The award is the highest honour
achievable within the force and only awarded to officers whove
displayed extreme bravery, often when confronted by armed
offenders.PCs Taylor and Rattan were first on the scene at a
domestic incident in Bradley on the night of January 12 last year
after a woman dialled 999 saying her partner had sprayed turpentine
over her and was waving a lighter around. They spotted him drinking
in the back garden but, when they approached, the suspect pulled a
knife from his pocket and shouted you aint arresting me a claim
swiftly proved wrong as the officers wrestled him to the ground and
prised the knife from his grasp.A citation to be presented during
the ceremony reads: You both displayed the highest level of courage
and tenacitythrowing yourselves into a clearly dangerous situation
to protect a member of the public who was understandably very
scared.
This was a violent, armed individual but following a brief
struggle you managed to disarm him and bring the situation to a
safe conclusion.
PCs Pooler and Howell were responding to emergency calls on
March 18 last year reporting a man brandishing a machete in a
Nechells street.Having made local enquiries they were directed to a
house where they discovered a man barricaded inside.Fearful that
the mans father was also in the house, and potentially in danger,
the officers forced entry and overpowered the suspect; a search of
the house later uncovered a stash of weapons including a crossbow
and coshes.Inspector David Keen, said: Several members of the
public approached me at the scene and praised the officers bravery,
plus their restraint and professionalism in the midst of extreme
incitement. They specifically pointed out the sensitive, humane way
they dealt with the man adding that they were clearly mindful he
was suffering mental ill-heath.
The officers decisive action prevented what could otherwise have
escalated into a siege situation.
A 45-year-old man was subsequently charged with possessing an
offensive weapon and a racially-aggravated public order offence. He
was jailed for a total of 15 months.

site at Moor Street in the city centre as plans for phase 2 were
unveiled by the Government linking Birmingham with Manchester and
Leeds.Birmingham and the West Midlands can take advantage of being
right at the centre of the high-speed rail network and the benefits
it will bring to the existing rail and road network through
released capacity, Mr Hammond said.HS2 is vital as an engine for
growth in the UK and the West Midlands will be at the heart of
that.Birmingham City Council cabinet member for development, jobs
and skills, Cllr Tahir Ali said: The announcement of phase 2 is
great news for Birmingham and the wider West Midlands region
bringing jobs, delivering tremendous opportunities for growth and
investment, and improving transport infrastructure.Centro chief
executive Geoff Inskip said journey times between Birmingham and
Manchester and Leeds would be halved by HS2.This provides a real
economic boost and releases capacity on our crowded existing
network for more local, regional and freight services, he said. Were
excited because were right at the heart of this network and the
challenge for us now is to get the very best return we can from
HS2.Birmingham Chamber of Commerce chief executive Jerry Blackett
added: Fast direct high speed rail connections and lower operating
costs will make the West Midlands which will be at the heart of a
network stretching from London to Scotland an increasingly
attractive alternative to the overheated South East for business
investment.Todays announcement of HS2 phase 2 connects the West
Midlands with the East Midlands, Yorkshire and the North West,
linking eight of the UKs ten biggest cities.HS2 will cut Birmingham
to Manchester journey times from the current 1h 31m to 41m and
Birmingham to Leeds from 2h to 57m.Independent research reveals
phase one of HS2 (from Birmingham to London) will generate 22,000
jobs in the West Midlands and deliver 1.5bn per year to the
regional economy.

Women smokers are five times more likely to be killed by their
habit today than in the 1960s, The Sun has reported, while BBC News
reports that female smoking death risk has soared.
These headlines are based on a recent study that assessed the
trends in mortality between smokers and non-smokers in the US
across several decades.
The authors of the research found an increasing difference in
mortality between women smokers and women non-smokers since the
1960s (this means that compared to their risk in the 60s, women who
smoke today appear to have even higher risk of dying compared to
their non-smoking counterparts).
The increase could be explained by what could be termed the Mad
Men effect increasingly from the 60s, womens smoking habits have
been more like mens in that they are starting at a younger age and
smoking more per day. As the authors put it: Women who smoke like
men, will die like men, that is they have been dying more commonly
of lung cancer, heart disease and stroke.
Risk of death among non-smokers may also be decreasing due to
advancements in treating common diseases. So non-smokers may be
living longer, while smokers lifespans are remaining relatively
short.
The good news is that a related study found that quitting at any
age dramatically reduced death rates, and quitting before the age
of 40 reduced the risk of smoking-related deaths by 90%.
Overall, the results of this study are hardly earth-shattering
smoking is still bad for you and quitting smoking is probably the
best thing you can do for your health.
Smoking-related death risk for women is now similar to men's
