Back in August of 2015, I had the opportunity to attend the Amazing Parish Conference in Boulder, Colorado with Fr. Marlon, Deacon Gil, Diane Kratochvil and Eric Broadbridge. The purpose of the conference is to help Catholic parishes understand that the Church is a mission - leading people to a true relationship with God, one that is real and dynamic. At one point, one of the speakers asked the question, “How many families are in your parish?” He then asked the question, “How many of you answered the question by the number of people registered in your parish?” He followed up with the question, “How many of you answered the question by counting the number of households within your parish boundary?” It was eye opening for everyone. So many of the attendees had no idea of the total number of households in their parish boundary (including us!) Then they asked the larger question, “What are you doing to reach out to these people in your parish?” As a pastor, this was a powerful moment, remembering that as a pastor I am responsible for all souls within my parish boundary. Just as a parent has responsibility to do their best to assist all souls in their home, I have the responsibility to do my best to assist all souls in my parish boundary. This can’t be done alone, which is why each pastor has the charge to encourage the entire parish to help reach out to all souls in the parish boundary – and beyond. Once we got back, Eric consulted Google Maps, and figured out the exact number of households in the parish. Currently, we have 3,604 houses and 824 apartments, totaling 4,428 residential homes in St. Angela’s Parish boundary. Now, when we look at our current number of homes that are registered, we had to take into account that a certain number are registered from out of our parish boundary (which is allowed by the Archdiocese). After updating our census last year and cleaning up our registry, we have 1,708 homes registered. The Amazing Parish Conference recommended the Alpha Course as a way to reach out to those who have been away from the Church. We were very interested in the Alpha Course and began to research and learn more about it. After a great deal of training and preparation, we launched our first Alpha Course in January of 2018. This was a pilot course attended by about 60 people, mainly active parishioners. Drawing from the attendees in that first course, we built a team to help lead our Alpha, which included table hosts, a welcoming committee, a table set up committee, a kitchen crew, a babysitting team, and a powerful prayer team that prays continually for the attendees. The full team is currently comprised of 50 people and they have a lot of fun serving. Prior to starting our current course, we tried something new. A small group of people volunteered to distribute door hanger invitations to Alpha on 460 homes in the northeast section of our parish. The outreach was new for us and a way to reach out to many that may not know what is going on at St. Angela. At this point, we have completed 4 Alpha courses and 379 people have attended. Currently, 133 people are attending our 5th course that began 3 weeks ago. I am very pleased with how so many people are connecting in their relationship with God and building friendships within our parish. Thank you for praying for all of our outreach efforts in St. Angela. If you want to become even more involved, don’t hesitate to call. Know that as a team, we are here to serve.

“At the Cross”
We are each blessed with individual gifts and talents. Bring your special abilities to this year's Parish Family St. Joseph Altar. All are welcome and all are needed. The single most important task in preparing an altar is to gather together a group of dedicated volunteers who are willing to devote their time and talents. Whatever your talent may be - carpentry, cooking, baking, decorating, organizing, etc., come and join us! There are some who have the talent of just being "present." They are the ones who just show up to offer an encouraging word, lift spirits along with a cookie tray, share smiles as they wash a few pans or sweep up cookie crumbs, and so much more by just being present. Whatever you have to offer, St. Joseph accepts gratefully, and so do we! Keep watching our St. Joseph's Altar Corner of the Parish bulletin to learn more about why you will want to become involved in our St. Joseph's Altar Ministry here at St. Angela Merici! If you have any questions, please contact Janet Cruppi at 504-338-2957, or Renee Lauland at 504-371-2101. Did you know… St. Joseph's Feast Day was dedicated as early as the tenth century. He is characterized as a silent man of exemplary integrity, demonstrated through his heroic obedience to God by his protection of the Holy Family.

Readings for the week
SAINT JOSEPHINE BAKHITA (c. 1869-1947) Feast Day: February 8 “Save Darfur!” That cry echoes
around the world and in the heart
of the Church, where a child of
Darfur is one of our newest saints:
Josephine (her baptismal name)
Bakhita (“Lucky One,” the slave-
traders’ nickname). Kidnapped at
nine, sold in Sudan’s slave-markets,
flogged daily till covered with scars, Bakhita was
finally bought by Italians and taken to Italy. There
Bakhita discovered a “Master” who had himself been
flogged to redeem her from slavery! “I am truly loved,”
she thought, “and awaited by this Love.” Baptized, she
often kissed the baptismal font, exclaiming, “Here I
became a daughter of God!” For fifty years as a
Daughter of Charity, Bakhita provided cheerful
hospitality to all who knocked at the convent door. In
her final illness, she relived slavery’s horror: “Please,
loosen these chains,” she begged the nurse. “They are
so heavy!” Her last words were: “Our Lady! Our Lady!”
John Paul II canonized her in the Jubilee Year 2000,
praising God for leading her “from abject slavery to
the dignity of being your daughter and the Bride of
