MISSION WEEK PERMISSION SLIPS FOR JUNIOR AND SENIOR PARENTS: Next week, juniors and seniors will be completing detailed permission slips for Mission Week activities. Please plan to sit down with your daughter and her tablet PC to review her Mission Week plans as your electronic signature will be required at the end of the form. Please ask your daughter about this if she does not mention it to you. More specific details about Mission Week will come next week. BLOOM THEATRE PROJECT: This year, fourteen students participated in the BLOOM Theatre Project with Betsy Anne Huggins, Education Manager for Actor’s Theatre of Louisville. The students’ original plays were submitted to the Actor’s Theatre New Voice Playwrights Festival, and out of 870 submissions, Kay Nilest’s play titled “Image of Beauty” was one of the top nine plays that will be produced by Actor’s Theatre and published in the New Voices Anthology. Five of the ten-minute Assumption plays will be fully produced and performed for public audiences at Assumption on Friday, February 19, and Saturday, February 20, at 7:00 p.m. There will be a staged reading of five additional plays by Assumption’s Acting II students on Sunday, February 21, at 2:00 p.m. Please plan to join us. This show is free of admission as we consider it to be a gift to the community. Free tickets can be reserved online at Showtix4u.com (be sure to use Google Chrome). On February 23 and 24, BLOOM Theatre Project will be a traveling show in which the cast of three plays will travel to the following middle schools to perform the show: Meredith Dunn, St. James, Home of the Innocents, and St. Martha. EARLY DISMISSAL PROCEDURES: We are receiving numerous phone calls from parents who need to pick up their daughters early and even a number of parents who show up at school to pick their daughters up with no advance notice at all. These both create a great deal of extra work for our already busy office staff. They are happy to go the extra mile in an emergency or when truly necessary, but we do ask that when an appointment has been scheduled in advance, students bring a parent note requesting the early dismissal to the attendance office prior to the start of the school day. Here are the early dismissal guidelines for 2015-2016:

To receive an early dismissal for a medical appointment, a student must bring a signed request from her parent to the attendance office before first period on the morning of the appointment.

Students who have medical appointments during school hours should plan to leave at the end of a class and not during a class if at all possible.

All medical appointments that fall during school time require a doctor’s note/verification which should be brought to the attendance office within two school days of the appointment in order for the absence to be excused.

Parents who need to inform their daughters of appointments made for them during the school day should make prior arrangements for their daughters to call them during lunch, between classes, etc., as it is Assumption’s policy to not interrupt classes unless it is deemed an urgent situation by the school office personnel.

SCHOOL DOORBELL SAFETY: We take the safety of our students, faculty, and staff very seriously. In compliance with school safety guidelines, we keep our outside doors locked throughout the school day, limit the number of visitors to the building, and screen all visitors and require them to come first to the school office to sign in and get a visitor’s pass. When someone rings the doorbell, our receptionist and office staff must follow safety protocols and find out who the person is and the nature of their visit to the school before allowing them to enter the building. Screening visitors is a critical component of providing your daughter with the safest school environment possible. If you come to the school door and ring the doorbell, please be reassured that we are keeping your daughter safe, and do not be offended that we ask you who you are and the nature of your business. FINANCIAL AID FORM: The financial aid link for 2016-2017 has been added to the school’s website. SUMMER ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITIES: Academic opportunities for the summer have been UPDATED. You can find these on our guidance department page by clicking here: ACADEMIC SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES 2016. Many applications are due in March. Please contact KELLY KIRWAN with any questions. EdCHOICE KY: The Archdiocese has asked that we share this information with our parents: The 2016

Kentucky General Assembly has begun and there is an important issue you need to pay attention to: Senate

Bill 44 and House Bill 336 would create a Scholarship Tax Credit Program in Kentucky. Parental choice is

essential for quality education, and scholarship tax credits will enable more parents to make that choice, no

matter their economic standing. Over the next few months, the issue will be heard in committees and

EdChoice KY--a coalition of educators, business owners and citizens who want more choices for Kentucky

students--will be educating citizens on the legislation. Senate Bill 44 and House Bill 336, also known as the

“Opportunities in Education” act, create a nonrefundable tax credit which may be applied against the

individual income tax, corporate income tax, the limited liability entity tax, or the bank franchise tax, for

donations to scholarship-granting organizations. Specifically, this legislation would allow donors to give

more to groups like the Catholic Education Foundation, thereby producing more tuition assistance funds for

families seeking a Catholic school education for their children. Senate Bill 44 and House Bill 336 ensure that

all students have the opportunity to obtain the education they deserve at a school that best suits their

educational needs. Help EdChoice Kentucky grow its statewide reach as we educate the Commonwealth on

Scholarship Tax Credits. Follow us on social media TODAY! Facebook: EdChoice KY Twitter: @EdChoiceKY

February 19, 2016 Dear Parents, Countless hours of preparation have gone into planning a purposeful and meaningful Mission Week for your daughters. As we prepare to officially begin, Campus Minister Gloria Thornburg shares this reflection on why your support and, most importantly, your prayers, are an essential part of our preparation, too. “Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.” These words by Leo Buscaglia embody the meaning of Mission Week. Multiple and varied opportunities will abound for our students to be the giver and the recipient of smiles, of listening, of caring, and of speaking. The power of words, the sacredness of promises, the call to be compassionate, the chance to impact a life make this week pivotal each year. We invite your participation by holding us all close in prayer: those traveling, those teaching, those serving, those learning, those reflecting, those planning and adapting plans. Our parent prayer group will not be meeting this week due to the changed schedule, but could we all at some time on Monday offer this prayer for the week:

Be with us, Merciful God, as we seek to be Your voice, Your hands, Your love

in the world this week. May mercy be made real in us and through us.

Amen CALENDAR NOTES:

Monday – Thursday, February 22-25 is Mission Week. We will begin school each morning one hour later at 8:45 a.m. and dismiss each day at 2:50 p.m. The school will open and students may be dropped off as early as 8:00 a.m. We believe that Mission Week activities are so important that we suspend classes for the week; all students are required to attend and participate in the activities

February 25, 2016 Dear Parents, In his Lenten message this year, Pope Francis stated that “God’s mercy transforms human hearts; it

enables us, through the experience of a faithful love, to become merciful in turn.” During this Mission

Week, our students have fully experienced how to be merciful through their Mission Week

activities. They have learned and served as well as represented the Assumption community so very well

in the Louisville community at large. In the end, whether experiencing something as big as a mission trip

or something as small as an act of kindness, our students’ hearts have grown full and, hopefully, have

been inspired to carry this message throughout the year. Thank you for your prayers and support of

your daughters during this very special week.

CALENDAR NOTES:

There is no school on Friday, February 26, and Monday, February 29, for our Mid-Winter holiday.

LENTEN FOCUS: Our focus for next week, the third week of Lent, is Feed the Hungry. All theology

classes are collecting spare change for the Catholic Relief Services Rice Bowl program. Our Mission Week

speaker, Alex Sheen, reminded us that the poorest people in our society have more than millions in

other countries. We are so very blessed to have safe homes, clean water, and adequate food.

LENTEN OPPORTUNITY: The chapel on the second floor of the CAC is open early every morning if you

would like to come in for some quiet reflection and private prayer after dropping off your

daughter. Spend as much time as your schedule allows. Please check in at the main office first.
