Reflection on Today’s Readings:
Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family...
First Sunday of Lent - The waters of Baptism make us part of the
new covenant in Christ. But the bishops’ pastoral letter on
stewardship reminds us that “there is a fundamental obligation
arising from the Sacrament of Baptism. . . that people place
their gifts, their resources — their selves — at God’s service in
and through the Church.”
Next Week - Celebrating Our Faith Sat., Mar. 3rd & Sun.,
Mar. 4th, 2012 - Second Sunday of Lent!
We encourage all to read and reflect on the Biblical passages
that will be proclaimed at all Masses next Sunday:
Reading 1 Reading 2 Gospel: Gn 22:1-2, 9a,10-13,15-18(26B) Rom
8:31b-34 Mk 9:2-10
^ Ì The Family Visitation Ministry offers spiritual support to
those in need. Please call Sr. Teresita at 310-216-2001, or call
the Rectory Office at 310- 670-2243.
FOCUS: Seek refuge in God’s covenant of love - Lent is a season
for repentance. Our relationship with God offers us a refuge from
the temptations of sin and a gateway to salvation. Through deed and
prayer we glorify God, whose mercy is never ending. Through Jesus,
we recognize that suffering is a part of our journey of faith.
LITURGY OF THE WORD: In the first reading, God gives the rainbow as
a sign. He will not allow a flood to devastate the entire earth
again. In the second reading, we are told that the Great Flood
prefigured Baptism, by which we are saved. Today’s Gospel tells of
Jesus in the desert, tempted by Satan and attended to by angels,
before He began His public ministry.
LORD HEAR OUR PRAYER … For those who are ill, and those in need
of our prayers … Please let us know about the condition of those
we’re praying for. We’ll keep/remove their name(s) as requested,
after the first few weeks.
To receive Holy Communion (for those who are sick, hospitalized,
or home bound) please call Gloria Bowen, 310.670.5971, Eucharistic
Minister to the Sick. To have the name(s) included in our prayers,
please call the
Rectory Office at 310-670-2243.

Dear Parishioners, On this First Sunday of Lent, the Word of God
has us reflecting on the nature of temptation—but more
importantly how the beauty of self control and the grace of
Christ help us to conquer even our very selves. We need not worry,
walk about aimlessly, or flounder. In Christ we can conquer. We can
accomplish, we can grow toward spiritual perfection. This is the
Gospel—this is the good news! We will have Mass at 5:30 pm. on
Wednesdays followed by Simple Soup. Stations of the Cross will be
on Fridays at 7 pm. Be there, or be square. ( Devotedly, Father
Gabe P.S. Please have a look at our Together in Mission status: ~

Ministry sends us beyond the parish…
FACT OF LIFE Learn From Dying Jesus to Pray for Others Benedict
XVI explained how in this moment of prayer, Jesus suffers in
communion with all people.
"In that moment, Jesus makes his own the whole of Psalm 22, the
great psalm of the suffering people of Israel, and so he is taking
upon himself not only the tribulation of his people, but also of
all people who suffer under the oppression of evil -- and, at the
same time, he brings all of this before the heart of God himself,
in the certainty that his cry will be heard in the Resurrection,"
the Pope stated. Christ's is a suffering "in communion with us and
for us that is born of love and already includes redemption, the
victory of love," he added. The Holy Father reflected that we also
"find ourselves again and again faced with the 'here and now' of
suffering, of the silence of God -- we so often express it in our
prayer -- and yet, we also find ourselves before the 'here and now'
of the Resurrection, of the response of a God who took our
sufferings upon himself, so that he might carry them together with
us, and give us the sure hope that they will be overcome." . . .
"Dear friends, in prayer let us bring our daily crosses to God, in
the certainty that he is present and listens to us.” (Pope
Benedict's General Audience, February 8, 2012) Prayer for Life:
Jesus, as you shared life in the womb of Mary, so now send your
protection upon every child still in the womb, and grant to their
mothers the strength and joy that comes from welcoming the gift of
life. We pray through Christ our Lord, Amen.
FROM THE ARCH- DIOCESE OF MEXICO CITY - Nation’s Severe
Drought Points to Much More Serious Problem: In the face of the
crushing drought affecting the Tarahumara Moun-tains in Mexico, the
Archdiocese of Mexico City is calling on citizens and government to
exercise greater environ-mental stewardship. The editors of Desde
la Fe, official archdiocesan publication, wrote on February 5 that
the drought—which is affecting half the country—is pointing to a
much more serious problem worldwide, which is the environmental
imbalance that is leading us to an environmental disaster. The
editors said much of the environmental degradation has been driven
by economic greed and immoral selfishness and urge that [t]he
response to emergencies should now be turned into a change of
mentality in citizens and into new public policies in governments
to solve the problems over the long term. The task is enormous,
[but] if we want to pass a better world on to the new generations,
we need to urgently change in order to recover respect for the
environment. To read the full report visit:

Lenten 2012 Reflections… Get up, stay up, and take one more
step. “When you give to the poor, don’t let your
left hand know what your right is doing.” - Matthew 6;3 In the
inspiring true-story movie Conviction (2010), Kenny Waters spends
eighteen years in prison, wrongly convicted of the 1983 murder of
Katharina Brown. Kenny’s sister, Betty Anne, completes her GED,
college degree, and law school while struggling through a divorce,
raising two children, and tending a bar. Her goal? To become
Kenny’s attorney and prove his innocence. Betty Anne dedicates
eighteen years to freeing Kenny, only to have him die six months
later. “Those six months were the greatest six months of his life,”
Betty declares. “He died a free man.” She offers us three words
that have the power of change our lives: “Don’t give up!” Divorced?
Financially destroyed? Betrayed? Deserted? Slighted? Seize the
opportunity this Lent provides: Fine-tune your determination to
draw triumph out of tragedy, possibilities out of pain, healing out
of their hurt. Encourage others to share their pains, reveal their
feelings, confess their failures, disclose their doubts, admit
their fears, and acknowledge their weakness. Choose not to be a
complainer, but rather an explainer, showing others how to handle
their suffering effectively. Call on Jesus, who is less that a
heartbeat away. He’s gently nudging you to get up, stay up, and
take one more step. Hearts reaching out - When two people connect,
something is poured out of one into the other, and that something
has the power to heal the deepest wounds. This Lent, think of
someone with whom you’d like to reconnect. Then take the initiative
to make contact.
Hands reaching up - Jesus, through my eyes and heart, look with
compassion on your broken brothers and sisters. Amen.

LENT 2012 - Lent began with Ash Wednesday. The Catholic
Community around the world follows these general regulations during
Lent. ABSTINENCE – Is a penitential practice consisting of
refraining from the consumption of meat and is to be observed by
all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older. Ash Wednesday,
Good Friday, and the Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence.
Pastors and parents are encouraged to see that children who are not
bound by the obligation to fast and abstain are led to appreciate
an authentic sense of penance. FASTING AND ABSTINENCE – In addition
to abstinence, fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good
Friday by all Catholics between the ages of 18-59 years
(inclusive). On days of fasting, one full meal is allowed. Two
smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken
according to one’s needs, but together they should not equal
another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but
liquids are allowed. Note: If a person is unable to observe the
above regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons, they
are urged to practice other forms of self-denial that are suitable
to their condition.
We Need Stuff! - The St. Anastasia school children will be
participating in a school family activity for Lent on Tue., Feb.
28th. Each school family will be creating their very own Station of
the Cross. We are asking you to
participate in this event by bringing in a variety of objects,
artifacts, related to our suffering, our every-day work, for the
greater glory of God as we strive for the Kingdom of Heaven. These
decorated crosses will be planted throughout the campus during
Lent. A box is in the vestibule. Call Jonette for info

Hall. This Simple Sharing and Breaking Bread Activity will be
Hosted by different ministries for each of the Wednesdays during

WE DO IT? The Simple Soup Supper is an intergenerational fellowship
that meets for a soup dinner after the Wednesday evening 5:30 PM

soups and bread. The Host group also assists with the clean up.
There is a basket at each table for those who wish to donate. This
is a free will offering. The money collected during the Lenten

Ministry in Community …
Keeping Kids Safe After School - You can help keep your children
safe by knowing where they spend their time after school. Get to
know the
adults who show up at the various locations in the community
where children gather and where they play together. Be wary of any
adult who seems more interested in creating a relationship with a
child than with other adults. Pay attention when an adult seems to
single out a child for a relationship or for special attention.
Warning signs include treats, gifts, vacations, or other special
favors offered only to one specific child. For more information,
please call the Archdiocesan Safeguard the Children office: (213)
637-7227. For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at
(213) 637-7650.

Living Faith for Kids… The Spirit drove [Jesus] out into the
desert, and He remained in the desert for forty days, tempted
by Satan. He was among wild beasts, and the angels ministered to
Him. - Mark 1:12-13 Jesus in the desert is our model for Lent, a
period of about 40 days. So why did Jesus go out into the desert?
Because the Spirit “drove” Him there. In the desert Jesus faced all
the same temptations to do evil that we face, and He overcame them.
In spite of the dangers and difficulties—the “wild beasts”- Jesus
always had the support of the Father and His angels. During Lent
we, too, will face temptations. Let’s remember that God and His
angles are always there to help us.
Your ways, O Lord, are Love and Truth, to those who keep Your
Covenant. - Ps. 25
