“You are merciful to all, O Lord, and despise nothing that you have made.

You overlook people’s sins, to bring them to repentance,

and you spare them, for you are the Lord our God.” Wisdom 11

Dear Parishioners and Friends,

Ash Wednesday begins this week on March 1st. Masses with the distribution of ashes will be held at 8:15am, 9:15am and 7:00pm. We have the Lenten “Little Black Book” available for adults. Children’s Lenten books are also available after masses this weekend. These Lenten booklets are a wonderful way to journey through Lent with daily reflections and prayer.

Parishioners will receive a Lenten Schedule of Events in the mail – there are extra copies in the back of church. Don’t forget to mark your calendar with all of the special Lenten opportunities.

Beginning on Tuesday, March 7 our Lenten Soup & Bread Suppers will begin. Please join us then and for the following three Tuesday evenings for a simple meal followed by a great Lenten reflection and music in church.

Be sure to mark your calendar for the annual

DIOCESAN DAY OF PENANCE on Tuesday March 28th from 12:30pm-7:30pm.

All Diocesan churches will be open this day during these times for reconciliation.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation is also available here at St. Rita every Wednesday at 8:45am (following daily mass), as well as on Saturday afternoons from 3:30pm-4:45pm or by appointment.

May God bless you this week! Fr. Gonyo

Here are the requirements for adult Catholics regarding fasting and abstinence:

Days of Abstinence: Ash Wednesday, and all Fridays in Lent including Good Friday are days of Abstinence. Roman Catholics, 14 years of age and older, abstain from eating poultry, beef, pork, etc. Eggs and milk products or condiments made from animal fat such as cooking oil are permitted.

Days of Fasting: On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, a limit of one full meatless meal for all who have reached their 18th birthday and have not as yet reached their 60th birthday. These are the ONLY two days Roman Catholics are required to fast. Therefore it is important that we not forget to fast (and abstain) on these two days.

HERE’S WHAT’S HAPPENING!

+ This week was Winter Break so the school was quiet.

The one exception was on Wednesday when the Fifth Graders had dance practice for their play, Enchanted Sleeping Beauty. They only have about a week and half until the curtain goes up so these dedicated students were hard at work over the vacation memorizing lines and perfecting choreography. The performances are Thursday, March 9 at 10:00am and 7:00pm and on Friday, March 10 at 1:00pm. Admission is Free.

+ Have you ever noticed the pictures in the Parish

Center Gymnasium on the closet doors next to the bleachers? This is Coach Mutrie’s 'STUDENTS IN ACTION' wall where you can see snapshots of SRS children doing something healthy that they enjoy. The wall displays our baseball, hockey, and softball players but there are also Swimmers, Martial Artists, and many other types of athletes, too. Our students have such diverse interests! Please take a look!

Your Questions Answered

From the Desk of Marie Marton . . .

Why do priests wear different colored vestments throughout the year?

The colors of the vestments are linked to the Liturgical Calendar. The colors remind us of the sacred mysteries that we are celebrating throughout the Liturgical year. Each color highlights a particular aspect of the season or a specific mystery of faith.

For example, white and gold symbolize rejoicing and purity of soul. They are worn during Christmas and Easter. The red color reminds us of Christ’s blood, which was shed for us, and it is worn on Good Friday and also to commemorate those saints who were martyred for their faith. It also signifies the burning fire of God’s love. Therefore, red vestments are worn on Pentecost and at the Sacrament of Confirmation.

The purple vestments are worn during Advent and Lent. They are to remind us of our need to seek forgiveness in anticipation of Jesus’ coming and as a response to the Paschal Sacrifice of Jesus: giving His own life so that we might be saved.

The most common color worn by the priests is green. Ordinary Time is a time when the Church focuses on the life and ministry of Jesus. The season celebrates the mysteries of Christ’s life and death and looks forward to the salvation and eternal life that He brings. Green represents hope - like the hope we feel when we see the first buds in springtime - so it would seem fitting that green is the liturgical color that marks the season of hope.

Why do we get ashes on our foreheads on Ash Wednesday?

For ancient Jews, wearing itchy sackcloth and covering themselves or sitting in ashes showed repentance and humility, and served as a form of penance. Thus, the early Church adopted the practice of wearing ashes at the start of Lent to show repentance, too.

Today, as ashes are placed on our foreheads, we will often hear the words, “Remember you are dust and unto dust you will return.” This is to remind us that our time on earth will pass away, but our life in heaven will last forever.

On other occasions, we may hear the words, “Turn away from sin and keep faithful to the gospel.” This also reminds us to remember Jesus died for our sins and to always remember His love for each of us and to try to be more like Jesus.

So, receiving ashes ties us to our heritage with the Jewish people and also reminds us of the Salvific act of Jesus and of our need to seek His forgiveness during the Lenten season. Please remember to make use of the question box which is located in the Library. I use these questions to respond to these issues in this monthly column. Thanks so much!!!

THE FIRE AT ST. PHILIP NERI CHURCH

This event is being commemorated at a Mass by Bishop Matano this Sunday morning (February 26) at 10;30am at the Church of the Annunciation on Norton Street. This marks the 50th anniversary of this tragic fire which occurred on Monday, February 10, 1967 and took the lives of Father George Weinmann and Sister Lilian Marie, SSND. Father Shatzel is hoping to attend this Mass, since he was pastor of St. Philip Neri about 2 decades after the fire; namely from 1986-1996. Other former parishioners are expected to attend as well.

St. Rita Men’s Group Searching for the truth together!

The St. Rita Men’s Group is not a social group or a community service group. We exist to support one another in our journey towards eternal life.

We will meet once a month to discuss topics that explore our faith and the challenges we face day to day. We hope that by supporting one another, all members will each deepen his relationship with Jesus.

Our goal is dialogue, not debate. We support, encourage, and strengthen our brothers. All men are welcome, no matter where you are in your faith journey. No commitment is required. Come to as few or as many meetings as you desire.

If you are interested or have questions, please email John Matina [email protected] and you will be included in the pre-meeting email that will describe the discussion topic for that month.

Our first meeting will be Monday evening March 13 6:30-8:00pm in Room 1. We hope to see you there!

“EPHESIANS – DISCOVER YOUR INHERITANCE”

St. Paul’s letter to the Ephesians reveals remarkable

gifts that we as Christians are given in the Church. This

letter tells us about the nature of the Church – as a body,

as a household, as a mystery, as a communion, as a

bride, and as an army. It shows us the great inheritance

that awaits us as sons and daughters, adopted fully into

the family of God. It reveals how God’s great love for us

can transform our daily lives if we allow it. Ephesians:

Discover Your Inheritance is an 8-part Bible study that

will enrich your faith, and show you how to live it out.

The dates and times are as follows:

Group 1 will meet Monday mornings in Room 1 from 10:00-11:30 am on February 27; March 6, 13, 20, 27; April 3, 17, 24

Group 2 will meet Wednesday evenings in Room 1 from 7:00- 8:30 pm on March 1, 8, 15, 22, 29; April 5, 19, 26

Group 3 will meet Thursday evenings in Room 1 from 7:00-8:30 pm on March 2, 9, 16, 23, 30; April 6, 20, 27

Groups meet on Monday mornings and Wednesday and Thursday Evenings and you can “Mix and Match” any of the sessions in the same week.

“INTRODUCTION TO THE BIBLE” Starting Thursday, March 2 (Thursday nights only)

Introduction to the Bible is for new-comers AND

experienced bible students alike. We will explore the

Bible as God's self-revelation throughout history and

how it speaks to us today. We will learn how to critically

read passages to discern the writer's original intent and

culture of the day as well as God's message that speaks

to each one of us directly and individually today.

Introduction to the Bible will meet in Room 3 from 7:00 to 8:30pm on March 2, 9, 16, 23, 30; April 6, 20, 27

TO SIGN UP FOR EITHER OR BOTH OF THESE EXCITING PROGRAMS: Please E-Mail the parish office at [email protected] or call the office at 671-1100. The cost of materials is $20.00 for one or $30 for both. If you have specific questions, please call or email Jerry Lupien at 794-3666 / [email protected].
