One of these rites will happen this weekend, the First Sunday of Lent. The Rite of Election and the Call to Continuing Conversion is always celebrated on the First Sunday of Lent at the Cathedral. The Rite of Election is for the unbaptized catechumens, adults and children, who will be “elected” to the Table of the Eucharist, called by name by the Bishop for the Easter sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. The Call to Continuing Conversion is for the baptized, who will be asked to deepen their baptismal life in Christ through the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil. The implication of this combined rite is to echo God’s call which all receive in life-a call to know the companionship of the living God in Christ through the Church. The Triduum is a collection of days during which the Church keeps a great vigil: from Holy Thursday Evening, through Good Friday until midnight [day 1]; from midnight Good Friday until midnight Easter Saturday [day2]; from midnight Easter Saturday until midnight Easter Sunday [day 3]. During these three days the Church remembers the Lord’s Sup- per at which he expressed discipleship-love through the washing of feet. The Eucharist is processed around the Church perimeter acknowl- edging that we live in the living presence of the Holy One. On Good Fri- day the Church recalls the Passion account of Jesus and takes the pro- cession to the Cross to venerate. A vigil is kept before the Holy Cross during some hours of the night. On Holy Saturday the Church continues the Vigil, gathering in the darkness to light a new fire, to bring that new light into the Church for the first time, to hear again the great stories of faith from the Hebrew and Christian Testaments, to fully initiate the seekers, to celebrate with the company of saints the Eucharist of the Lord. Easter Sunday continues this celebration centered around Bap- tism and Eucharist. (continued inside bulletin)

LIFE TOGETHER Dear Friends, So welcome to the Lenten season. It often strikes me about how this season seems to play a role in many Catholic’s lives and non Catholics as well. There is something within us that tells us that sacrificing can be a good [look at our needs to diet or to avoid “too much” of anything]. While Lent is not about dieting it is about self denial for a spiritual purpose. We seek some emptiness so that we can notice our longings for God. All too often, our longings for God are drowned out in the noisiness of life. So, one aspect of Lent you may want to pursue is creating quiet. See how putting some quiet in your life each day of Lent can make a difference. Can you do 10 minutes??? It’s a learned behavior so don’t be surprised if you find this difficult to do. I believe, though, that if you try it, you will find out how deep the longing really is. By the way, I want to refer you to a website created by Fr. Jerry Burns called www.naturengrace.com which has on the site photographs of our Stations of the Cross. It’s a lovely opportunity to make the way of the Cross from home and marvel at each station’s uniqueness. During Lent there will be Lenten Retreat Day called Back to the Garden: Cultivating Holiness in the City held on Saturday, March 17th in the Church and Library. The day will be a chance to gain some quiet and perspective on your life with the Lord. I encourage you to come. I am happy to tell you that our parish will be offering Strong Catholic Families; Strong Catholic Youth on two occasions, March 13th and April 22nd. This session will provide concrete and practical ways to enhance the spiritual life of the family and help create a supportive community of faith for the young to receive from and contribute too. FISHING WITH MOM AND DAD is coming up Satur-day May 10th from 9:00am-1:00pm at Waddell Wildlife Reserve on N. Flannery. ITS FREE!!! We’ll provide lunch, some drinks, poles and prizes for various categories. You bring your own bait! Please sign up in church and go fishing with mom, dad or whomever you wish. ☺ Notice that the sacrament of Reconciliation is being offered in Church every Monday night of Lent, 6:00-7:00pm. Note too, the opportunities on the

BAPTISMS We welcome the following children to our parish family through the Sacrament of Baptism:

baptism into Christ; an adult or child over the age of seven already baptized as a Christian and would like to become a Catholic; or an adult or child over the age of seven already baptized as a Catholic but have never received First Communion, we can help you. The process is called RCIA [Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults], or the Catechumenate. If you would like to pursue this in any way, call the Parish Office at 753.7950.

Wednesday nights of Lent in various churches in our area. Please pray for our unbaptized Elect and our bap-tized candidates for Full Communion and Full Initiation. God is doing good things in their lives and in our parish! Have a good week ahead. Love,

CONTUINED FROM COVER St. Jean Vianney will send to the Rite of Election and the Call to Continuing Conversion unbaptized catechumens and baptized candidates who will accompany the parish for the Lenten season leading to Easter. Together we will keep the Triduum as well, moving through the “doorway to heaven” which is Easter. Make sure you are part of the journey. Keep Lent with faithfulness and with your parishioner community.

PLEASE PRAY FOR UNBAPTIZED ELECT AND OUR BAPTIZED CANDIDATES

During this Lenten season, we ask your prayers for the unbaptized Elect and the baptized Candidates who are enrolled in the RCIA process of our parish. These individuals have been involved in this process for several months and are now entering into an intense period of reflection and prayer. In the entrance of our church you will see a display with the names and photographs of the Elect and Candidates who are requesting Baptism, Confirma-tion and Eucharist through the RCIA process. When you see these adults and children at Mass, please introduce yourself and let them know that you are praying for them. Through your prayers and words of encouragement, those who seek to know him in the Catholic faith, will feel the genuine love and support of the community of St. Jean Vianney.
