I thank John Waters for his constructive and excellent leadership with us and wish he well for his next venture. Continuing with the same solar panel theme, we have submitted a development application (DA) to the council to install a ground based solar system that will support the club’s electricity use. In tandem with the DA, we have applied for a grant through the local council. If we are successful, the funding will contribute towards the construction of the system. Members don’t forget we have a fantastic mega raffle with a choice of two great prizes. Tickets and books of six tickets can be obtained at the reception desk or the main Bar. We look forward to your support with this fundraiser and wish you luck! We are about to commence the long overdue repairs to the clubs exterior. Rain!!! What a welcome relief it was for myself and the rest of the course staff to see some rain last month. In total 42mm was recorded on the course with 22mm of that coming in less than an hour. This will now ensure that we have more than enough water to carry us through the remainder of the season.

January has been rather busy trying to catch up on work after the public holidays over Christmas and New Year. Bunker edging took priority last month in preperations for the Summer Tournament and 2P Ambrose Weekends. In addition to this projects will be put onhold as course preparation takes precedence.

Irrigation leaks seem to be the theme for January after I jinxed the course saying we hadn’t had any all season with major works required on 4P, 9C and 15C. In addition to this some new adjustable sprinklers have been installed around bunkers to eliminate the watering of bunkers during irrigation cycles. Not only is this better efficiency of the water we have but will also improve playability dramatically. The worst offending bunkers have been targeted first with the plan to more being done over the coming months.

On Thursday 12th December, the Toc Old Farts golf group held their Xmas lunch day for 2019. The 2 course Xmas lunch consisted of a main course of Xmas roast, followed by a delicious Xmas pudding and was thoroughly enjoyed by the 38 Old Farts players who attended the day.

The golf winner on the day was Danny Andersen, with the runner – up being Geoff Hanns. The raffleprizes of Xmas hams were won by Ted Oakley and Bruce McCallum.

The TOC OLD FARTS play 18 holes of golf every Thursday morning. All golfers are welcome to join and there’s no membership fee. The competition fee is only $5. There are usually 20-35 players in the field, with the winner winning over $50 (depending on the size of the field). Theres also a raffle for a meat tray each week. The funds raised from the weekly raffle, provides a free monthly sausage sizzle lunch, as well as the Xmas lunch at the end of the year.Every golfer, young or old is welcome to play Old Farts golf on Thursday mornings. If you enjoy golf, with more than a dash of fun thrown in – come and join us at the Old Farts on Thursday morning. If you would like to play Old Farts golf, call Col Holdsworth 0418328963.Thanks Col Holdsworth

Our Mid Murray Pennant team had their last match at Corowa on Sunday 19 January with their opponents being the top of the table team from Deniliquin. The match was reflective of the ladder positions and unfortunately our team lost 5 nil.The first pair out were Stephen Piggott and Rod Buchmasser and the day started off on the wrong foot for Rod by losing two balls to the water gods and both Stephen and Rod struggled to overcome Deniliquin and lost 5/3 .The second pair of Murray Chapman and John Bradbury were square after nine holes but the Deniliquin pair found their rhythm and ended up winning 4/2.The third pair of Bernie Clements and Shane Halloran had a tough match on their hands from the start with one of the Deniliquin players getting 15 shots and in the finish the 15 shots were too much and consistency won the day for Deniliquin 7/5.After losing 3 matches TGBC were hoping for some luck but Deniliquin won the last 2 matches, Pete Bolt and Dav Wilson lost 3/2 to a Deniliquin player who hada day out.The final pair of Ron Huy and Paul Aston had the closest handicap spread and after being 4 down after 9 fought back to be 1 down but Deniliquin picked their game up and won 3/2 and finished before the rain came. The team has 11 months to lick their wounds and plan for the next season.

Our illustrious Team Captain Shane has expressed his thanks to all players for their dedication and representation of the club. It’s never an easy job to carry out but with the number of players along with their enthusiasm and willingness to participate the key to the strength of our team.

Bowls News Bowls News - Graeme Searle

Colin and Andrea Brown Farewell – on Tuesday 21 January over 40 of our bowls members enjoyed the Steak Night and bid farewell to Andrea and Col Brown. Col was a Board Chairman before the amalgamation and Andrea has been a distinguished bowler representing the club in Mid-Week and Saturday Pennant as well as in District and State level events. It seems to have been a night enjoyed by all that attended. Perhaps we should find a reason, or any excuse, to have such a night every month or so?

Pennant – with the heat out on Friday and Saturday there is only one round before the finals. The Friday division 2 team have been the stars and are currently on top of their section. Keep up the good form and best wishes for the finals. It would be great to celebrate back at the club after the grand final. Go Toc !

Both division 1 teams have had a relatively successful year, not making the finals but very importantly cementing their positions in their sections for next year. Division 3 teams have represented us well but not been able to reach the finals.

Alan Whiteside – At our January meeting the Bowls Committee passed a motion to nominate Alan for promotion to the Murray Bowls Division Hall of Fame for his service to bowls over 38 years and particularly the 33 years with Tocumwal. Alan is continuing a distinguished career in bowls which he began when carpet bowling a Waaia in 1982. For a few years he joined his local clubs at Nathalia and the Finley RS clubs to play lawn bowls before arriving in Tocumwal. He was awarded Life Membership of the TG&BC in 2016 recognising his roles as a Board Member, volunteer green keeper and barman, Alan was also one of the key players in “saving the club” when poker machines were introduced into Victoria. Alan represented Victoria many times and won numerous Divisional Championships in indoor bowls. Alan has a long record of representing Tocumwal in lawn bowls at the highest levels in Pennant, Divisional and State events. We expect Alan will join Bon Sweeney in becoming Tocumwal’s second bowler in the Hall of Fame.

Mixed Pairs Championship - Last Wednesday, in a tightly contested match Yvonne and Graeme Searle werethe winners with Donna Carter and Roger Carter the runners-up.

Ladies and Mens Triples – The Triples are being played on Mondays 3 and 10 February and the finals will be on the 17th. Please note that this is a change for the men’s event to the dates published in our Program Booklet.

Coming Events – Whilst pennant is drawing to a conclusion, our regular social bowls, major events and barefoot bowls continue. However, there are other special bowls events to look forward to. So, it is time to get your teams together to enter and play in the following events.• Northern Triples – Tuesday 18 February – 3 bowl triples, 3 games of 8 ends, any combination.• Men’s Trade Day – Thursday 13 February, 2 bowl triples, 4 games of 10 ends• The Allan Seamer – Saturday 14 March – game and entry details are on the Club Tocumwal website. Go to “Bowls” then “Bowls Events” and scroll down to click on the entry form.

New Members – if you know anyone that you think may be interested in trying bowls please let a Committee Member know and we will see that they receive a gentle introduction to the game.

Touching Loose Impediments & Grounding Your Club in a Penalty Area. • There are no longer any special restrictions when a ball is in a “penalty area” (the expanded designation for the area that includes what were previously called water hazards) • A player is allowed to touch or move loose impediments and touch the ground with hand or club (such as grounding the club right behind the ball) for any reason, subject only to the prohibition on improving conditions for the stroke (see Rule 8.1a)

Rule 17 Penalty AreaRule 17 is a specific Rule for penalty areas, which are bodies of water or other areas defined by the Committee where a ball is often lost or unable to be played. For one penalty stroke, you may use specific relief options to play a ball from outside the penalty area.

Water & Lateral Water Hazards It is an unfortunate fact that many golfers, even those that play regularly, do not appear to know the difference between a water hazard and a lateral water hazard, which may be important when deciding which relief option is the most appropriate in differing circumstances.

Water Hazard (Yellow Stakes & or Lines)Areas of the golf course containing water, or areas that normally contain water, are typically designated as water hazards. Common water hazards include ponds or small lakes, but a drainage ditch will also be considered a water hazard if it normally contains water, even if the ditch is dry on a particular day.

Lateral Water Hazard (Red Stakes & or Lines)A water hazard may be designated as a lateral water hazard when the hazard's shape or position on the course makes it difficult or impossible to drop the ball in accordance with the rules while maintaining a fair playing position. For example, if a water hazard runs parallel to the line of play and the ground on the far side of the hazard has many trees or bushes and very few playable lies it may be designated as a lateral hazard. (Example: Captains 3rd Hole)

It's Not a Hazard AnymoreThere's one caveat to the new golf rules January 2019 allowing a golfer to ground their club in a hazard. It's not called a hazard anymore, it's not called a water hazard, it’s now called a penalty area. With the expansion of penalty areas and the desire to speed up play, that means golfers will be in penalty areas where it just makes sense to be able to ground a club. Instead, then, of creating tiers and types of penalty areas where grounding is allowed or prohibited, the USGA and R&A decided a player can ground a club in a penalty area without issue. Golfers are also now allowed to remove loose impediments and touch loose impediments in penalty areas, erstwhile hazards.

Why penalty areas existThe USGA and R&A have made it clear penalty areas exist not to penalize golfers, rather to give golfers options when they're in a situation where it's not practical or possible to hit a golf ball where it lands. Penalty areas are there to give golfers options for relief, allow them to continue playing and move on with the round. By allowing a golfer to ground their club in a hazard or penalty area, the USGA and R&A are still allowing penalty areas to serve their purpose without being unnecessarily penal to a golfer.

Congratulations to staff member & golf member, Nat Beard on winning our latest Coca-Cola promotion at the Pro Shop!

Final round of both our Ladies 4 Ball and Men’s Scratch pennant was played Sunday 2nd Feb. The girls played Mooroopna in what in effect was a cut throat match with the winner to progress to next weeks final.

Unfortunately the Ladies team wasn’t quite able to get the result they needed. Bobette Wilkinson and Megan Carr won the first match 2/1 to get the team off to a bright start.

Leanne Marshall and Petra Wilmot fought gamely all day only to finish square after the regulation 18 holes. The unlucky pairing of Ros Seymour and Cheryl Hart finished 1 down in a match that could have gone either way.

In the end the girls were tied with Mooroopna and missed the finals on individual match results throughout the season, bad luck girls but a great effort anyway.

On a brighter note our boys headed to Mansfield to play against Benalla.Early on the team was in deep trouble with only 1 match up after 9 holes. Ben Kerr and Brett Molnar at no 2 were the first back in the sheds going down 3/2.

It was then the youngest pairing in this years Pennant Charley McKenna and Jordan Bovalina at no 4 who fought back with some great golf to win 2/1.

Our no 1 pairing of Rod Booth and Steve Piggott were always in control and took the win 3/2 to post our 2nd win and effectively guarantee a passage into the final alongside results from the first 2 rounds.

After being 4 down after 10 holes Phil Nunn and John Thompson fought on gamely and went down the last hole square. Phil had a putt to extend the Match but was unlucky to miss and thus the tie was 2 matches a piece.

With the no 5 pairing of Mal Hart and Pete Bolt heading down the 19th after being tied after regulation holes all eyes were focused on the boys. Finding the fairway and hitting a pitch from 60m to around 1m, Pete then calmly holed the birdie putt to give Tocumwal a 3 matches to 2 victory.

While we went through the season undefeated we will face Benalla again in the final on Sunday Feb 23rd at Yarrawonga. This will see a great opportunity for the team to win their first flag for a number of years.

Best of luck to the boys and commiserations to the girls and our Mid Murray boys team who bowed out of contention last week.
