The services contain the traditional extra prayers and joy that bring in the new month. Through its 19- year cycle, the Jewish calendar adds Adar I during seven leap years to keep the holidays based upon a 354-day lunar calendar aligned with the seasons. We observe Purim during Adar II as it falls during the last month of the year (with Nissan the first), the month before Pesach. Yahrzeit observations follow different customs. If the death occurred in Adar I or Adar II, most observe the yahrzeit in the same month during leap years and in Adar during non-leap years. However, if the person passed away in Adar of a non-leap year, customs vary. In general, most Ashkenazim observe the yahrzeit in Adar I (this is how KBH lists the observances). However, other customs include using both Adar I and II or observing the date in Adar II. On Friday, 08 FEB 2019, Kehillat Bet Hamidrash (KBH) – the Kempsville Conservative Synagogue – joins our programming partner Temple Israel at KBH for Shabbat dinner following the 6:30 PM services. Dinner is free for children 5 and under, $9.00 for children 6 – 12, and $18.00 for all others. Please RSVP by 04 FEB 2019 to [email protected] and mail your payment to KBH Synagogue Dinner, 952 Indian Lakes Blvd., Virginia Beach, VA 23464-5655. You may also RSVP and submit payment via PayPal on our website, www.kbhsynagogue.org. As always, no cost to attend the Erev Shabbat minyan. KBH board meetings start at 7:00 PM commencing Wednesday, 13 FEB 2019. Several congregants and their families dealing with illnesses would love to hear from you. Others asked how they may help the families. For a list of names and/or addresses to write notes or to assist, please send an e-mail to [email protected].
