VESTRY RETREAT 2019 . . . . . . .

St. Peter’s Vestry travelled to the DuBois Conference Center at Sewanee for our annual 2-day retreat in January. Deacon John Ray served as the facilitator for the retreat and challenged the Vestry to examine their Mission and Outreach in the community with a new perspective. Ray emphasized that Mission and Outreach is not just for the people in the community who we are able to help but it also serves to strengthen the Christian lives of the members of St. Peter’s who participate in the variety of nonprofits. The Vestry was encouraged to participate more fully in the agencies that we support and to encourage parish members to do so also.

2019 is the 175th anniversary of the founding of St. Peter’s Church. The Vestry members all presented ideas on how to celebrate this momentous occasion and plan was adopted to raise awareness in the parish and in the community at large. Discussions were also held about much needed repairs on the buildings and grounds of St. Peter’s and a plan was adopted to address these issues as well.

All Vestry members were energized about the opportunity to serve the parish in the coming year. All agreed that St. Peter’s is a vibrant growing parish and has been a vital part of the Rome and Floyd County community for all of its 175 years.

Children’s Ministries—Hollye Smith

I write this article as we are in the midst of Epiphany season, and it has me thinking about the meaning of epiphanies. The word epiphany derives from the Greek word epiphainen meaning “manifestation or appearance” and implies the manifestation of the divine Jesus Christ in our lives. It gets me wondering what epiphanies lie ahead this year. How will the divine manifest in the ordinary? For me, I see the divine in children’s faces as they are learning why we celebrate Eucharist. For me, I see the divine in a new relationship that is forged by serving in ministry together. For me, I see (and hear) the divine when our Junior and Youth Choirs lift up their song on high. What about for you? And these epiphanies...do they just happen to come to you? I believe sometimes, but I also believe that we can help by actively seeking out opportunities where the divine can easily manifest itself: our relationships with others. I ramble on about this because I have big hopes for our Children’s Ministry program this year. How will we grow? Who will be called to help in this special ministry? How can we build relationships within our Children's program? I ask you to pray for our children’s ministry program as we plan for the future and look out for the epiphanies around us. Got a thought, comment, or concern about Children’s Ministries? Please feel free to give me a call at 706-512-9193 or email to [email protected]. Better yet, let’s grab coffee!

Great Kindness Challenge – Jr. EYC challenges YOU to join them through the end of February to participate in the Great Kindness Challenge. There is a list of suggested random acts of kindness located in the sanctuary as well as in Daniel Hall. Pick one up and check off as many as possible from now thru the end of February. Or, choose your own random acts. If the act can be captured in a photograph, please snap a picture and post it to social media #stpeterskindnessmatters or email the photo stpetersromfamily.org [email protected]. Mission & Outreach February

During the month of January, the parishioners of St. Peter’s collected 2 bags of coats and several large boxes of towels, wash cloths and kitchen towels for local shelter: Ruth and Naomi, William S. Davies and the Salvation Army.

In February, we are asking for donations of women’s NEW underwear (all sizes), socks, and most importantly, new sweat shirts/pants for the Ruth and Naomi Shelter. In addition, we are helping St. Peter’s youth in collecting new pajamas (sizes newborn to teen) for our community’s foster children. Monetary donations are always welcome.
