I’d like to thank everyone who attended the January Potentate’s reception and for extending best wishes to our Divan, my Lady Sharon, myself and family. Thank you to

Ill. Sir Peter Ekholm and Lady Elizabeth and the many Past Potentates Ladies, my Aides, Chiefs of Staff, Sheiks, Auxiliary, Pipe Band members, Emilio Munoz, Chris Zak, Jim Smith and others for their work on the Divan/Potentate’s reception. To my Shrine father, Ill. Sir Roger Robinson and to many others, thank you for your support and efforts made for the installation of your officers. I am truly humbled to be your 2017 Potentate. I will admit that the responsibility of being Potentate is a daunting honor. I am human and I do not admit to know everything. I will try my best to find the answers to questions presented to your Divan and to “Serve You” and our hospital in the best way I am able in the year ahead.

We are off to a great start. We enjoyed the hospitality extended at the January Holiday parties. Again, congratulations to all the new C & U officers. Congratulations to Noble Gary Winter on his re-election as Trustee, to the new Master Masons who participated in the January “One-Day-To Masonry.” Thank you to Nobles Anders Haugen, Tyler

Bass, Tim Bass and the newly formed Athletic Club Nobles for hosting our first… East/West Shrine Football viewing party. We had a fantastic time representing Osman at the recent St. Paul Winter Carnival Parade. Thank you to my aides, especially Wiley and Shelly (Toots) Davis, for hosting the Oasis prior to the Winter Carnival Parade and to all of you for your participation in this annual St. Paul winter event. What an opportunity to show and remind the St. Paul community who Osman is and to promote our upcoming Shrine Circus. Thank you to Noble Sean Gardiner and our C & U officers for the work put into the recent February C & U Seminar. Your Officers and Nobles will be attending the upcoming February MSA meetings in Minneapolis.

Nobles if you have not paid your 2017 dues, please send in your dues payment after reading this article. Your prompt attention to this is appreciated. I would like to thank Noble Tim Bass for his many hours of work in this area. Nobles, please remember

to call our office with changes to your phone numbers or address. Simply call Doreen in the Shrine office with your updates or questions.

We will be away for few days in February to enjoy Maui with some Osman Nobles and Ladies. Safe travels to others enjoying a winter get away.

Looking forward; Membership is priority. As I mentioned previously we will work on strengthening your Clubs and Units. If you are interested in joining the Sportsmen Club, stay tuned for upcoming organizational meetings. This is going to happen and we hope it will be another exciting opportunity for participation.

On Friday, March 17th we will participate in the upcoming St. Paul, St. Patrick’s Day Parade followed by this years’ first Osman Ceremonial and a

traditional St. Patrick’s Day buffet at the Lost Spur. There

The Chief’s CornerOur first parade, as

always, was St Paul’s Winter Carnival parade on January 28th. Thanks to all who do this parade in January in Minnesota! What a blast, (sometimes cold

blast), it was. This parade always brings out the best of Nobles! Who else would brave the weather to bring attention to our Shrine temple. I think it’s the challenge of doing it that makes it so much fun. Thanks again!

Special thanks to Noble Wiley Davis, and his lovely wife Shelly for taking on the Oasis prior to the parade. They, and their helpers, did a wonderful job of providing all of the brave winter carnival participants a warm meal and drink before they took to the streets. Thank you so much!!

Our next event was the Club and Unit Seminar on February 4th. Officers and members of the units attended and got to learn about what the plans were for this coming year. Lots of interesting topic’s from parades this year, to parade

procedures, to membership, hospital status and patients, and certainly the upcoming Circus, were reviewed. Opportunities to serve by joining any club to be more active were abundant.

We are going to be in St Paul, for the St Patrick’s day parade on March 17th. This parade is for walkers only, no handouts. However, we plan to carry a huge Circus banner to advertise the 2017 Circus. The parade is in downtown St Paul, and is a short one. The line up time is 11:45 and the step off is noon. We would like to get some volunteers to walk in the parade, carry our banner, wearing our fez’s and meet about 10am to pass out coupons for the Circus in the crowd and business, prior to step off. This is going to be a great fun parade!

Here are the parades for 2017 for your unit planning;

• March 17th St Paul St Patrick’s Day parade.

• March 30-April 2nd, Osman’s Shrine Circus! Come join in the hardest FUN you will ever have! There is a task for every noble, no matter how small! Get involved.

• June 23rd, South St Paul, Kaposia Days parade

• July 8th, Lakeville parade

• July 12th, White Bear Ave parade

• August 12th St Paul Park parade

• August 18th, MSA parade in Minneapolis

• September10th, Northfield DJJD’s parade

• River Falls parade, Date TBD late September or Early October

More details will be available in the coming months, regarding Oasis, line up times, locations, and special instructions for each parade. Please remember, again this year, I would like for all units participating in any given parade, to notify me in advance, so I can plan the line ups to accommodate all the motorized, walking and non- motorized units, safely.

Thanks for all the support and help I get each year!

Jim Moore,

2017 Osman Chief of Staff

Jim Moore

I’m pretty sure I’m not qualified to be president of the director’s unit. First, I’m not old enough so I don’t know everything and I don’t have a wife to do all the work and make me look

good like Kent or Mike.

I love to parade and I don’t like to walk unless I’m walking into a restaurant, so this unit is perfect for me.

I love to play with everybody at the circus so thanks to letting me participate with you. Aren’t those smiles the best?

If you want to ride in a parade, call me. If you want to go to dinner with us call me. If you want to help at the circus, call me. If you want to complain, call the Potentate. I think my election was hacked by the Russians and therefore I will let the rightful winner, Kent, take over if he wants to.

I like to laugh and I hope you do too because sometimes that’s all we have left.

So as we start a new shrine year, I look forward to seeing you. .at the circus. .or at a restaurant. ..or at the parade or maybe even at a meeting.

Mr President, “The Silver Fox”

Love to the Rescue:

Most of us by now have had the opportunity to see the new commercials that the Shrine Hospital has been using on TV this last year: They really

give the Shrine a very positive image, of love and caring. As Shriners each Year the Zagalas Vehicle Club prepares for the parade season. We are those Men in the Red Fezzes: with vehicles that may be antique or new or exotic. We spend countless hours cleaning caring and preparing for our vehicles for opportunity to drive down the road and share our vehicle with the crowd that we believe came just to see us. “LOL” we are fortunate that we can live the dream each weekend as we participate in a parade.

Every child who has the opportunity to see us, dreams of being in the driver’s seat. But not all children travel the same road. For children faced with physical challenges, fulfilling the promise of a brighter tomorrow can be a long and bumpy ride. The specialists at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Twin Cities are determined to put children in the driver’s seat and set them on the road

to independence.

The First Shrine hospital opened in Shreveport, La., in 1922, However, In November of 1921, the groundbreaking ceremony took place for Shriners Hospitals for Children — Twin Cities. This coming year the Shrine Hospitals are pleased to announce the addition of a new facility to assist the children in need of the Shrine Hospital:

Pasadena: Home of the new Shriners for Children Medical Center will open in June 2017.

The new medical center is part of Shriners Hospitals for Children, the world-renowned 22-location health care system, which specializes in pediatric specialty care, innovative research and outstanding teaching

programs for medical professionals.

This year as we prepare for our parade season let’s give thanks to all Shriners Nationwide that assist the hospitals that we all care so much for.

To the world you may be one person but to one child you may be the world.

Greetings fellow Nobles and Ladies!

Hopefully, all of you weathered the cold month of January and are ready to move on with renewed vigor as we look forward

to spring arriving soon…and another parade year that arrives right behind that. In about 100 days from when you read this, Chang should come out of hibernation and hit the street again. Are you ready!

The Dragon Patrol Christmas Party should have helped you get through the cold month and I enjoyed spending the evening with all of you.

I’m going to continue for now helping our new president, Dale Clark, by writing our monthly column as he prepares to lead us through what we’re sure will be another big year for the Dragon Patrol. I have no problem with that and it would be even better if you’d let me write about the Gophers, Twins or Vikings, like I do in my newspaper column throughout the year! I never lack for an opinion or something to say

about our teams!

But we’ll stick with unit and Osman matters.

I have a few more thank you’s as I look back on my year as president. First of all, my biggest thank you goes out to Noble Art Pavlish, for his continual “coaching” and advice as I stumbled through the year. Without him helping me out, I never would have made it. Thank you, as well, to his Lady, Donna, for her continued support and for looking after me as she did all year. She’s kind of like my second mom now, but she’s too young for that!

Thank you to Nobles Bert Aikens for keeping track of the “books,” Chris Koenig for lining up our parades, and Bill Hubbard for again keeping track of attendance. Those are big jobs done behind the scenes, so they’re easily overlooked.

Simply, thanks to all of the guys in my unit for doing what you do for our unit, for RASC and for the Shrine organization…and the children! And to our ladies for your support, as well! You are all very dedicated to our cause and are all so much fun to be with

at parades and all of our other events.

And congratulations to our fellow Dragon, Illustrious Sir Bruce Thomas, and Lady Terri, on a tremendous year! You were an awesome Potentate and while we know you were extremely busy, you still found time to help us out whenever you could. Thank you!

Best wishes to Illustrious Sir Rich Purcell on his year that has now begun!

Looking forward, our next Stated Meeting is Wednesday, February 22nd, 7 p.m., at the Eagles Club. See you there!

We also have the RASC Herberger Days February 23-25. Let Art know if you can help out a shift or two.

And the Circus and Father/Son/Daughter Banquet, hosted by the Daddy O’s, are coming up in a couple of months. We hope to see you at those events.

Fraternally yoursMike Smith

Alexandria Shrine Club and 4 WheelersThe Alexandria

Area Shrine Club, Calliope and Four Wheelers had a great year in 2016. Many parades were attended and we had an excellent circus in June

which we are looking forward to again on June 16, 2017. The club purchased a new motor home in 2016 to replace our current Big Red as it has served its purpose and now needs to be put to rest.

There is a lot of work to be done before it can be put in service, but planning to have it ready by Osman Circus if all works out. By the time this issue comes out we will have done our first parade at Winter Carnival in January.

We have our Ladies Valentines brunch on Sunday February 12th at the Arrowwood Resort in Alexandria. All nobles and ladies who would like to come are invited; we just need to know if you are coming for seating purposes. Please email me at [email protected] if interested.

Our club would like to say congratulations to Illustrious Sir Rich Purcell and Lady Sharon. We look forward to all you have planned this year and are excited to be part of it.

Respectfully Submitted,Brion Golde

The January 10th meeting was held at Barley’s in Austin with several members attending in spite of the rain and snow that fell throughout the week. President Brad Stout

welcomed those attending and following the Invocation and Pledge to our Flag, dinner was ordered from the menu.

We were saddened with the loss of Noble Malcolm McDonald who passed form us on Dec.25, 2016. Several of the Nobles and ladies attended his Memorial Service. Also, Noble Charles VanHouse is currently at Comfort Care in Austin, as the result of a fractured hip. Noble Forrest Miller experience foot surgery on January 6th and is rehabbing at home. Also, Noble Norm Hecimovich has experienced some health issues and is being monitored by the medical teams in Austin.

Noble Otto Volkert discussed the Circus Promotion materials and

members were given their packets of information to make contact with the businesses who support not only us but Osman Shrine.

Noble Hanson also reported that the information regarding the needed repairs for the Oriental Band Bus had been mailed to Osman. We will ask permission to speak to the request at the Officer’s Seminar on Feb. 4th. The three bids range from $4,599.00 to $4,781.00.

Noble Hanson reported that he has been working on the parade schedule, and has made contact with parade chairpersons to confirm dates for 2017. We are looking for a sponsor in St Charles. If anyone knows of a possibility, please contact us.

It was also reported that on Dec. 2nd, when the Shrine Club rings bells throughout Austin for the Salvation Army, a total of $9,400.00 was collected. This amount was matched by MN Masonic Charities. Also, Nobles assisted with the bell ringing

for Fidelity Lodge on the Fridays and Saturday between Thanksgiving and Christmas at the Hy-Vee Food Store in Austin. $14,087.00 was collected for the Area Food Shelf. Of this amount, $10,000.00 was matched by MN Masonic Charities bringing the total amount generated from the Masonic Bodies to $42,847.00.

A huge “Thank You” to Bill Newell for coordinating the Shrine Bell Ringing, and Dean Johnson for the Lodge Bell Ringing. We also owe a huge thank you to the ladies who supported us by taking time slots where needed.

The next meeting will be February 9th at a site to be determined. The calling committees will make contact with our members.

Neil HansonBusiness Manager

Greeting Nobles and Ladies,

I’d like to start off by saying “Thank you” to everyone in the RASC for allowing me the privilege of being your president for the 2017 shrine year, I look forward to serving you and Osman Shrine to the best of my ability. A big thank you to Dan Rasmussen for being the president last year and guiding us through great shrine year. Russ Billings has offered his services as Sec/Treasurer again this year with Ryan Colligan taking the second seat to Russ while we try to find a replacement for Russ in the future. Russ has served us faithfully for many years in this capacity and would like to set down. If you know anyone

that would be good at this job lets Russ or myself know.

Our next event is the Sweetheart dinner hosted by the Merry Medics. We look forward to a great night. Keep watching here and on the Rochester area shrine club website for updates.

www.rochesterareashrineclub.org

Looking ahead, I would like us to continue with all the regular events and hope to add a few events that put us in the public eye. Many folks in our communities see us in the parades but really have no idea what we are about and what our mission is. My goal this year to start changing that in the

Rochester area and the surrounding communities. Hopefully we can get back to Thursdays on First this year, and possibly add a fall event that shows off Shriners and the Shriners mission to the public.

Keep watching here and let’s have a great year.

Fraternally yours Tracy W. Saunders

Gentlemen and Lady,

Today we had the opportunity to surprise Amy Trunnell at her job. Amy flagged me down at the Walmart in Cottage Grove one day last week, she had notice my Osman jacket. Amy had been a patient at the Twin Cities Shriners Hospital for over seventeen years. She was very excited to share her story with me and I wanted to surprise her with a group photo. So, today six Members of the Osman Cycle Corp showed up at two O’clock this afternoon and indeed surprised her. Attached you will find the photo and I would like to personally thank John Stolte, Ray Williamson, Pete

Staloch, Doug Senn, Dave Gagnon, photographer Pat Nowland and an honorable mention to Ian Gardiner [not pictured] for joining me Steve Ingram, for taking time out of their day to bring a smile to this very special young lady. Amy made it a point to mention the Osman Shriner and her appreciation of the hospital. Our Work Matters!

Respectfully,Steve Ingram

Greg Morfitt

My name is Noble “Jake” Loper. I have been active in the Masonic Lodge for several years working my way through the chairs and other Masonic bodies. Now I am the “President” of

the Albert Lea Shrine Club. And as you can see I’m quite happy with it. With our insurance

dos and don’ts I will no longer be able to drive our van in parades. However don’t worry, I’ll

be riding “Shot Gun” waving and smiling, something Shriner’s do BEST!

HISTORY! 2016 Potentate Bruce Thomas has honored our club many, many times over the years with his presence. And let me tell you when he shows up the feeling of fellowship

just flows. For “Bruce” is one hell of a Shriner. Our hats are off to you NOBLE BRUCE THOMAS.

FINNALLY! Noble Lynn Davis gets his “past Presidents pin”. He just got off three years of duty

as president and leader of the Albert Lea Shrine Club. And leader he is. Noble Lynn has done a

wonderful job leading our club. He was elected vice president now, which is cool because his support is

greatly appreciated. Way to go Noble Lynn!

Burn Awareness Week Kicks Off Annual Campaign

Shriners Hospitals Wants Children and Families to “Be Burn Aware”

Shriners Hospitals for Children® continues to be determined to decrease the number of preventable pediatric burn injuries by raising awareness. One program in this

effort is the annual Burn Awareness campaign, which began more than 20 years ago.

Every year, during the first full week of February, our public relations efforts emphasize Burn Awareness Week, the kickoff of a yearlong educational campaign

aimed at burn awareness and prevention, including offering free educational materials via our website. The items, including activity books and fact sheets, are designed to be a resource for firefighters, teachers, parents and others concerned with the safety and

well-being of children. Many of the items are available in both English and Spanish.

The 2017 Burn Awareness campaign will begin the week of Feb. 5-11. We are once again using the theme “Be Burn Aware,” and focusing on preventing burn injuries in the home, because the vast majority of preventable burn injuries continue to occur in residences. Homes are the sites of thousands of burn injuries to children every year, including scalds, fire-related injuries, and even electrical burns. Many of these incidents could have been easily prevented by following and implementing some basic safety tips. In the U.S., the occurrence of major pediatric burn injuries has decreased; these educational efforts do have an impact.

“Shriners Hospitals for Children is committed to providing burn awareness education year-round to help prevent burn injuries,” said Kenneth Guidera, M.D., chief medical officer of Shriners Hospitals for Children.

“Our ‘Be Burn Aware’ campaign this year will again be focused on teaching children and families ways they can avoid burn injuries, especially at home. We will be sharing information on how to prevent fire and electrical-related injuries, as well as those caused by scalds or other incidents that can transpire around the home. Shriners Hospitals for Children is aware that many of these pediatric burn injuries are preventable, and hopes to reduce their occurrences through education.”

Materials Emphasize Burn Awareness and Prevention Education

The campaign features two child-friendly characters, Boots and Brewster – a caped, cuddly bear and a googly-eyed teapot – who are featured in activity books for children ages 3-7 and 8-12. The entertaining duo leads children through the various rooms of a house, pointing out dangers, and how to easily correct or avoid them. The coloring pages, word searches, cartoons and other activities are designed to grab children’s attention and present the information in a memorable, age-appropriate manner. The campaign also includes various tip sheets and materials that emphasize prevention of scalds, fire-related and electrical burns.

Shriners Hospitals has also created an animated video featuring the clever pair, Boots and Brewster, which kids are sure to love. In the new video, available on our website, Boots and Brewster take viewers on a fun and educational adventure to help them become more burn aware.

All materials are available for viewing and ordering at beburnaware.org. Shriners Hospitals for Children is also assisted in its burn prevention efforts by members of the Shriners fraternity, who promote the campaign in their local communities in a variety of creative ways.

Dear Auxiliary Members and Friends of the Auxiliary,

The Osman Womens Auxiliary had the privilege of running the coat checks for both the New Year’s Brunch and the Potentate’s Reception. Thank you, Illustrious Sir Rich, for allowing us to do the coat check at your reception, and thank you to everyone who donated “tip money” to the Auxiliary. This is one more way that we are able to raise money to help provide mobility equipment for the children at Shriners Hospital for Children – Twin Cities. Also thank you to the Auxiliary Members who manned the coat checks: Marjorie Park, Kathy Flicek, Kay Skoog,

Linda Will, Gee Winter, Donna Pavlish and Sue Doty. You did a great job!

When I think about the generosity of all of the Nobles, and their Ladies, the Auxiliary Members and everyone who so generously donates to the Osman Womens Auxiliary, I am truly humbled. You all give in so many ways donating money, toys, quilts, blankets, pop tabs, sewing holiday stockings, knitting caps, mittens and scarves, helping at the Hospital, helping with Auxiliary projects and events, the list goes on and on. We so much appreciate everyone’s ongoing support to Osman Womens Auxiliary. It is through this generosity that we are able to meet our goal to provide mobility equipment for the children at our Hospital.

I would like to extend a special thank you to Ron and Pari Pew and the members of the Rochester Area Shrine Club for all of your donations to the Osman Womens Auxiliary. Once again, Ron made beautifully hand crafted wooden rolling pins, bowls, dice shakers and little jewelry boxes to raffle at the Rochester Holiday party with all of the proceeds going to the Osman Womens Auxiliary. All of the items were gorgeous, and everyone wanted to win one of his handmade items. Ron sold $600 in raffle tickets at the Rochester Holiday party, and he once again donated all of the raffle money to

the Osman Womens

Auxiliary. Thank you, Ron, and Pari, you are amazing!! We so appreciate your generosity!

I want to say a special thank you for all of the toys that have been donated to the Auxiliary the past few months. You have definitely made a difference. The Osman Cycle Corps collected and donated many toys to the Auxiliary. The Rochester Shrine Club ran a toy drive at their Holiday Party and collected so many toys, it took two vehicles to get them all up to the Auxiliary!! Thank you so much!!!! We put out a plea for toys and you all came through!

Your Auxiliary Board has been busy planning exciting events for the upcoming year. We are going to start our year with the Auxiliary BUNCO Party at the Lost Spur/ Osman Event

Ill Sir Bruce Thomas, Ryan Colligan and Dan Rasmussen donating toys from the Rochester Area Shrine Club toy drive to Rose West for the
