THE APPLE PATCH By Kay Grant and Cheri Stacy, NEP Assistants

HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH? (SoFAS)? To maintain a healthy weight and heart, limit empty calories from solid fat and added sugars (SoFAS) to 5-15 percent or less of a day’s total calories. Read the Nutrition Facts label on food packaging to learn how many grams of fat, saturated fat, and trans fats are in a serving. Additionally American diets are high in salt (sodium). Too much sodium can cause high blood pressure (hypertension) in some people. High blood pressure can lead to a heart attack, stroke or kidney failure. The USDA Dietary Guidelines recommends adults eat no more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day (roughly one teaspoon of salt), and reduce it further to 1500 mg, or less, if you are over age 51, have high blood pressure, diabetes, or chronic kidney disease.

Limits for solid fats, added sugars and sodium are based on US Dept. of Ag Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
