The large sign at our

entrance on West

River Parkway declares that

Becketwood is “A cooperative

community.” We tend to use

this slogan or tag line in our

marketing materials without

giving it a lot of thought.

“Cooperative” is a term we all

recognize because it refers to

our form of organization, but

“community” is more difficult

to define. Like many broad

concepts, it has multiple

meanings. It can refer to a

group of individuals living in

the same place or sharing

certain characteristics in

common. And it can apply to a

neighborhood, a nationality or a

religious group. But that

definition, with its various

applications, does not convey

the deeper meaning of the term.

For me, at least, community

means the feeling of fellowship

that I share with my neighbors

because of our common

concerns, interests and outlook

on the world. Becketwood is a

real community because it

provides that feeling of

fellowship. It offers us a home

where we have true friends—

neighbors whom we care for

and support, and who care for

and support us. These days,

true friendship is a rare

commodity in this fast-paced

world where our relationships

are often in flux.

Many of us have moved to

Becketwood after living busy

lives where we have developed

a large circle of acquaintances

through our work and through

other organizational

affiliations. But, as the years

pass, many of those

relationships begin to fray. We

may see these friends less

often, even as we vow to keep

in touch, and soon they began

to fade from our memory.

Here at Becketwood, we share

the same living space — some

have even called it a genteel

commune. We have a unique

opportunity, not available in

many other settings, to

establish new friendships to

replace those that may have

disappeared. It may take a

while for those new friendships

to take hold, but that can

happen as we get to know the

new neighbors who share our

12-acre home.

Some of us are lucky enough to

be embraced by a close-knit

family with children,

grandchildren and even

great-grandchildren who live nearby

and visit us often. Others are part of a

church community or a circle of friends

who have known each other since

childhood. But for many of us the

Becketwood community has become

our family that celebrates with us in

good times and helps sustain us in bad

times.

Not all of us who live here on our

bucolic campus, with its acres of green

space, are seeking the community that

Becketwood can provide. Some are

content to live on their own. They are

the neighbors we don’t often see in the

hallways, in the dining room and at our

community events. But even they can

be comforted by knowing that a

community is waiting here for them if

they want to seek it.

We know that social isolation is one of

the most crippling conditions that

afflict too many older people. As the

years go by, many of us find it more

difficult to go out into the broader

world to maintain the networks that

kept us occupied and engaged during

our younger years. In our 40s, 50s and

even into our 60s, living in that single-

family home with its large yard and

challenging upkeep did not limit our

social world. But that began to change

in our 70s and 80s. Now, the single

family home, once so highly prized,

began to take on aspects of a prison.

Many of our contemporaries have

opted to move from their single-family

homes into a rental apartment or a

condominium. They may have sold the

long-time family home, where they

raised a family, in order to move on to

a less demanding housing

arrangement. And while that new

apartment or condo, with its shiny

finishes and modern conveniences,

may seem attractive on the surface, it

(Continued from page 1) does not provide the warm embrace of

a community that we are able to find

here at Becketwood.

So, the next time we pass by that

welcoming sign on the West River

Parkway, it should remind us why

Becketwood is such a special place for

those of us who are lucky enough to

live here.

Hennepin County Public Works

It will be an enjoyable, entertaining,

educational evening where Members

will learn to use all five senses to

navigate the dirty, trashy world of

recycling and composting. Topics

discussed will include, but will not be

limited to:

Proper disposal of recyclables

and organic composting

Financial repercussions of

Recyclable material NOT accepted

Becketwood Cooperative is an

environmentally conscious community

that encourages every Member to

recycle and compost. Recycling and

composting save energy, conserve

natural resources, limit pollution, and

stimulate the economy. It can also be

confusing and overwhelming. It is

common to hear Members ask, “Is this

recyclable?” This can be challenging to

answer as recycling rules and

guidelines seem to always change. For

instance, it is common to learn that

material we couldn’t recycle last month

is now recyclable this month. This is

due to new developments in

technologies and uses for recyclable

packaging and material. Our town hall

meeting will provide helpful hints and

clarification for easy recycling.

Recycling makes environmental and

economic sense. Its main purposes are

to avoid dumping in landfills, to help

reduce air and water pollution, and to

ensure valuable materials like

aluminum cans, plastic, and glass are

reused in other forms and not wasted.

Recycling should not be demanding,

stressful, difficult or overwhelming.

Our evening speaker will review

Hennepin County’s recycling policies

and guidelines. She will provide

recycling education to help navigate

the “what-is-or-is-not-recyclable” maze.

This is a great opportunity for

Becketwood Members—who tend to be

very enthusiastic about recycling and

reducing our footprint—to have all

their recycling and composting

questions answered.

Members will learn to be more

confident when recycling items and

material that appear questionable. We

will also talk about the financial and

environmental impact that occurs when

garbage or non-recyclable materials are

found in the compost and recycling

dumpsters.

In addition, we will be recognizing and

thanking the group of Becketwood

Members who volunteer to transport

recycling materials (not compost) from

the trash rooms to the proper

dumpsters in the garage. These

volunteers provide assistance to those

(Continued from page 3)

Members who have aged-in-place and

can no longer manage taking their own

recycling material down to the garage.

This kindness allows Members to

remain at Becketwood and to continue

to participate in our recycling program.

As always, able-bodied Members

should take their own recycling and

composting directly to the garage. We

salute this valiant group of Members

who volunteer and work tirelessly to

help other Members and to save planet

Earth.

I will be collecting Member questions

for the speaker to answer at the

Recycling Celebration. Please write

them down and drop them off in the

mailbox outside my office, or feel free

to send me an email at

[email protected].

Additional information and resources

are available on line at

www.hennepin.us/recycling and/or

www.hennepin.us/compost.

I hope to see you all at the Recycling

Celebration. In the meantime, please

have a wonderful Valentine’s Day.

Marketing News

Maura, Kari, and Lynette

The February sunshine steeps your

boughs and tints the buds and swells

the leaves within.

William C. Bryant

Sales

We started 2017 out strong with two

closings in January! Rosemary

Rawson purchased Chesterfield #410

and will be doing some upgrades on it

prior to moving here in March from

Tucson, Arizona, to be near her

daughters. Todd and Tracy Gulliver

of Chisago City purchased Coventry

#469 and have already moved in and

are starting to get their bearings.

Celebration 100 Thank You!

January was quite a month in the

Marketing Department! With a large

percentage of the Members, many from

the Waiting List, and even quite a few

outside artists and friends, we

celebrated the 100th

show in the Art

Gallery in grand style! Huge thanks go

to Jerry Nordstrom, Neal Luebke and

the entire Art Committee for planning

and hanging the show in two galleries

in record time! Many volunteers

helped the event go smoothly, and

most especially thanks to all of the

Members who contributed to the show

by loaning your most treasured pieces

for the month. Everyone sparkled and

so did the champagne! What great fun!!

New Members

We also welcomed 14 new Members to

Becketwood in seven different units at

the latest New Member Reception. If

you missed it, please be sure to pick

up a copy of the New Member Bios in

5 February 2017

the Convenience Center and do your

best to welcome them all when you see

them!

College Co-op Tour

The average age group around

Becketwood will skew quite a bit lower

than usual on Saturday, February 18.

We will host a large group of college

students from around the country who

are spending the day learning about

cooperatives in general. They will be

visiting a wide variety of co-ops that

day, and will review the ins and outs of

housing co-ops with us while visiting

Becketwood for lunch, a brief tour and

a Q & A session. We have hosted this

group before and they are always very

enthusiastic, grateful learners!

Refurbishment Reminder

The Refurbishment Coordinator and

Maintenance Supervisor need contact

information about all vendors and their

schedule before work begins. The

vendors need to adhere to codes and

building permits, have proper

insurance, and follow Becketwood

policies. If you are thinking about

doing some updates in your unit,

please make sure you touch base with

Lynette or Brandt first so they can

make sure everything goes smoothly

for you.

What’s the Buzz

in the Kitchen?

We have started the year

off with a good response

to the new Sunday Brunch

Buffet that features linen tablecloths

and a walk-in option. The breakfast

entrée and appetizer-salad bar are

becoming very popular and fit just

about all palates. If you haven’t tried

the brunch yet, please stop down on a

Sunday afternoon and try it out for

yourself.

Our Thursday gourmet lunches have

added a chef’s garden salad or fruit to

the fresh bread starter.

Did you know? A little food for

thought: Since we have a salad bar

featured three days a week I have had a

few questions about some of our

delicious produce. Our house salad

blend is made up of a hydro bibb

butter lettuce that comes from Rob’s

Green House in Hollandale, Minnesota,

and fresh clipped spinach and fresh

chopped romaine comes from Markon

Farms First Choice Picks. Our organic

shredded tri-colored carrots come from

CAL-Organic Farms, and our wonderful

heirloom grape tomatoes come from

Cross Valley Farms.

If the work in the dish area of the

kitchen doesn’t start in February, we

hope it will be in March. When this

construction happens, the kitchen will

be using all Eco-Compostable products

and recyclable aluminum pans during

construction time, which may be up to

a week.

News of

Environmental

Services

The winter months

create the need for our cleaning staff

to double and triple their efforts to

maintain the hallways and stairwells

here at Becketwood. This is no small

task with all the foot traffic we have on

a daily basis. Jordon and our

housekeepers share the responsibility

for these tasks and we try to stay on

top of things as best we can, but

timing does pose a challenge.

It is our intent to vacuum and clean

each of the first floor entries and stair

landings daily, to vacuum all common

halls once a week and to sweep and

mop all stairwells weekly. Of course

higher trafficked areas will need

cleaning more frequently. You can

help keep Becketwood looking as good

as it should by reporting any areas in

need of attention to me.

News from

Security

As we all know, during

the winter months our

sidewalks and drives

periodically turn into

skating rinks. Jeff

(Ziggy) does make

every attempt to

maintain these areas in order to make

them as safe as possible. Security also

strives to keep our front entrance area

safe for incoming and outgoing foot

traffic. This being said, we also need

to keep in mind that we cannot be

everywhere at all times and we

appreciate it when Becketwood

Members take an active role in helping

us maintain a safe walking

environment for entrances and other

areas after regular working hours.

Members can help by reporting

slippery areas to the security desk. If

Members are able and willing, they may

also choose to apply salt and/or sand

to walks themselves.

I would ask only that Members not

endanger their own safety in their

intent to help. Supplies and equipment

are kept at each of our eight building

entrances for the purpose of this

seasonal need. If you do choose to

help, please remember to use these

supplies sparingly to avoid having

excess salt and sand brought back into

the building by foot traffic.

Chuck Graham

Charles (Chuck)

and Bonnie

Graham moved

to Becketwood in

the autumn of

2005. Chuck

died December 23, 2016, following a

brief illness.

Chuck, born and raised in Illinois,

graduated from the University of

Illinois, Phi Beta Kappa, in 1950,

married Bonnie in 1951, and went on

to earn a Ph.D. in 1955. His early career

in education began in the State

University System of Wisconsin at

River Falls, where he chaired the Social

Sciences Department and later was

Dean of Arts and Sciences at

Whitewater Branch.

In 1960, Chuck took a two-year

sabbatical to serve as Legislative

Assistant to U.S. Senator William

Proxmire. Later he became President

of St. Cloud State University, and in

1981 was named President of Hamline

University. He and Bonnie remained

there until 1987, when Chuck became

Head of Overseas Programs for the

State University System of Minnesota.

During that time he helped to found

Akita International University in Japan,

between the State University System of

Minnesota and the government of

Japan. Chuck’s last public service post

was as Acting President of Metro State

University in Minneapolis.

Chuck was a past president of the St.

Paul Rotary, as well as the recipient of

several awards for distinguished

service to education and public life.

Chuck and Bonnie have three sons, ten

grandchildren, and two great

grandchildren.

Chuck and Bonnie enjoyed winters in

Tucson, Arizona, their Becketwood

home, and family time at their cabin.

Chuck “did all the good he could, for

as long as ever he could” (John

Wesley). We are happy to have known

Chuck, a jovial, pleasant man.

Dick Goblirsch

Richard

Goblirsch and his

wife Linda Thain

moved to

Becketwood in

the autumn of

2013. Dick was a

Minneapolis

native, growing up in north

Minneapolis. He graduated from St.

Thomas Academy, and went on to

receive his Master’s and Ph.D. from the

University of Wisconsin, Madison, in

Mathematics. Dick taught at several

universities prior to teaching at the

University of St. Thomas for thirty

years. He retired from there in 1995,

where he had been Chair of the

Mathematics Department and acting

academic Dean. Dick enjoyed travel

and taught in China for a semester in

1986. Dick and his first wife had three

children, two of whom live in the Twin

Cities, and one in North Carolina. He

also has three grandchildren and three

great grandchildren.

Linda met Dick at St. Thomas in 1977,

when she worked as his secretary.

They have been together ever since

opportunities to learn

more about your neighbors

when you browse the Becketwood

shelves located in the reference section

of the Library.

The updated volumes of the

Becketwood Bio Manuals are now

available. Each of the three volumes

containing the Marketing Mentor Bios

has a new alphabetical Member index

from 1994 through the present. The

index will be revised as new Members

are introduced. Expanding from one

manual to three, the Bio volumes are

much easier to use.

Also on the Becketwood shelves are

several volumes of memorials manuals,

titled "In Remembrance of Becketwood

Members." The manuals, maintained by

Deb Rodmyre, are arranged

chronologically from 1989 and include

a yearly list of deceased Members and a

list of memorials, donors, and Members

memorialized.

The Communications Committee

invites you to explore these manuals

for an enlightening, worthwhile read.

Becketwood Art News

With echoes still

reverberating from

January 6th

and our

Celebration 100, the

members of Becketwood’s

Art Committee wish to

express their gratitude for the broad

support received over the past 100

months and now in the recognition of

this special milestone. None of this

could have happened were it not for

the encouragement of the

Cooperative’s staff and for the

generous sharing of art by individual

Members over the years. Celebrating

Becketwood’s newly established twin

galleries (well-lit, thanks to the Craft

Committee), this month Members

willingly and joyfully provided

half-a-hundred of their most treasured

pieces.

And now, while our celebrating is not

past, monthly Art Show #101 is waiting

in the wings. And wait until you see it!

(In the words of Monty Python, “Now

for something completely different!”)

Toto Sugiarto (a son-in-law of Eunice

Milbrath), whose art has been shown

here before, together with his wife

Laurie, have assembled a collection of

Indonesian artifacts and masks. Such

masks were originally intended to

coordinate with ornate costumes and

worn by performers interpreting the

narratives of fabled kings, heroes and

myths. This show will also present

conta puppets—an art form promoted

for preservation by UNESCO in 2003.

Cloth hangings will be shown, also

examples of batik. The display will

contain parts of costumes, also various

textiles normally worn by women—

Becketwood Choir

News

After a meaningful Advent

Lessons and Carols service,

and a well-earned hiatus,

the Becketwood Choir resumed just in

time to lead the first, newly established

Evensong service on Wednesday,

January 25th. Now we are focused on

preparing songs for the February 22nd

Evensong service, as well as exploring

music for our annual spring Pop

Concert, set for 7:30 p.m., Saturday,

April 29, 2017. We welcome new

singers with open arms. Remember,

you could sing for the Pop Concert AND

the monthly Evensong services, OR

choose just one or the other.

(Questions? Call Jean: 455-9293.)

Most of us recognize the very strong

connection between music theory and

mathematics: harmonic overtones,

duple/triple rhythmic groupings,

vibrational patterns of scales—major,

minor, dorian, mixolydian etc..

However, sometimes it’s just fun to

play with basic math to illuminate the

cumulative benefit of choir members’

time commitments.

For example: From February 1st until

February 22nd, the choir, averaging 25

singers, will hold three rehearsals of 45

minutes each. This means we will be

investing 3 x 45 minutes = 135 minutes

x 25 singers = 3375 minutes, divided

by 60 minutes = 56 1/4 “person hours.”

In other words, the choir songs you will

enjoy during Evensong on February

22nd are an ephemeral result of a joint

commitment by the choir of 56+

"person hours,” expended in enjoyable

music-making, bonding and benefit.

Thanks to all!

Peace, Jean Geissler, Director

Take Command

By now, things have

probably settled down

and you are all

accustomed to your

new cable remote. All that was needed

was some patience and perseverance.

People here are pretty thankful that the

Tech Hub duo explains computer stuff

in a non-technical way. They are glad

when we try to help with problems

electronic. We always say it takes two

of us to handle every problem—one to

Google for a solution and one to

distract the computer user from this

sleight of hand.

The sight of two of us floundering

about has given some people the

courage to flounder about themselves.

Hooray! We love when you do that.

The important thing to remember is

that you can't do any serious damage

by trying things yourselves. You can't

accidentally break the thing (even

though in frustration you might want

to drop it on the floor to show it who is

boss).

And you know who is boss? You are!

You are the master and the computer

or tablet is your servant. The same

goes for your cable remote. It is

waiting for you to tell it what to do.

But just what do you want it to do?

This is the key: what do you want it to

do? Once you have figured that out,

the next thing to do is figure out a way

to make that happen. It is sitting there

dumbly (maybe exasperatingly dumbly)

awaiting your direction. And you need

to give it direction.

Say you are writing an email and these

irritating red dotted lines keep showing

up under certain words. Or maybe, the

computer makes your word disappear

and substitutes some totally asinine

word or phrase. I hate when it does

that! And you know what? That

irritates plenty of other people too.

The computer manufacturers know

that is really irritating. Which is why

they came up with a setting on the

software that lets you turn off the red

lines and the auto-correction. You just

need to find out where that setting is.

And you can do it! Just give it some

thought and the old college try. There

Food Service

Committee

ast fall the Food

Service Committee

created a Member Food

Preferences and Dining

Room Survey. The survey

asked 1) What comes to mind when you

think about the Wellington Dining

Room? and 2) What do you hope to find

when you arrive there? Your responses

exceeded our wildest expectations!

75% of you took the time to complete a

survey with thoughtful answers. 71%

of you returned our surveys and

collected a complimentary cookie

during Cookie Cart. Another 4% merely

put their surveys in the box in the

convenience center.

Your surveys have provided us a

significant tool to use as we plan for

2017. As the year goes on, you will be

able to see changes that will benefit

our Becketwood community.

On behalf of the Food Service

Committee, Chef Jason and his entire

staff, we would like to thank you for

showing us you care!

questions.

Remember when we were young and

had a cold? Our mothers would rub

Vicks VapoRub on our chests and

around our noses to relieve nasal

congestion. This is an article from

Mayo Clinic Housecall 12/16 that

discusses this practice.

Vicks VapoRub doesn’t relieve nasal

congestion. But the strong odor of the

ointment tricks your brain so you feel

like you’re breathing through an

unclogged nose. By contrast,

decongestant tablets and nasal sprays

sold over the counter may narrow

blood vessels in the lining of your

nose, leading to reduced swelling in

your nasal passages.

VapoRub has drawbacks other than

ineffectiveness as a nasal

decongestant. It’s unsafe for any use

in children under two years of age. In

adults and in children over two years

of age, use only on the chest and neck.

One of the ingredients in VapoRub and

other topical medications is camphor.

This can cause fatal poisoning if

swallowed by a toddler. Topical

camphor can also be toxic if absorbed

through mucous membranes or broken

skin. That’s why VapoRub should

never be applied in or around the

nostrils. If VapoRub gets in your eye,

it can damage your cornea.

documenting the devastating impacts

of climate change. As the designated

United Nations Messenger of Peace on

Climate Change, DiCaprio and his team

various regions of the globe, visiting

world leaders and impacted areas. The

film combines present-day and

As DiCaprio says, “Our world's climate

urgent breaking point... We cannot

afford to waste time having people in

power that choose to believe in the two

percent of the scientific community

that is basically bought off by

lobbyists and oil companies.”

NEW IN THE LIBRARY slaves. The lasting problems of the

South impact every aspect of this

morality tale.

TWO BY TWO by Nicholas Spark. At

32, Russ has it all, a loving family,

successful career, and a beautiful

house. He is very surprised when this

life he took for granted is turned

upside down. Finding himself single-

handedly caring for his six-year-old

daughter London, while starting a new

business, he wants to shelter her from

these changes. A chance encounter

with an old flame and the support of

his biological family help him to

understand the true nature of

unconditional love.

PRECIOUS AND GRACE by Alexander

McCall Smith. Precious Ramotswe and

Grace Makutsia agree to help a young

Canadian woman find important pieces

from her past life in Botswana. This

story is not only about being a

detective but about gratitude and

obligation. The 17th

book of the best

selling #1 Ladies Detective Agency

series.

NON-FICTION

HIDDEN FIGURES by Margot Lee

Shetterly. Before there were

mechanical computers, there were

humans who were called computers.

During World War II, the U.S. recruited

gifted African-American math teachers

to serve as human computers at the

Langley Aeronautical lab in Virginia.

This book follows the careers of four

of these women, who endured the

assaults of segregation while they

calculated the numbers that would

launch rockets and astronauts into

space.

BITTERROOT by Steven Faulkner. The

author and his son retrace the route of

FICTION

THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD by

Colson Whitehead. Inventing a

fictional, but one described as an

actual, underground railroad provides

the vehicle that illuminates the all too

real horrors of slavery in the United

States and the unquenchable thirst for

freedom that motivated countless

African Americans to seek to escape to

the north. It is mostly Cora's story,

that of an African American slave girl,

which sheds light on an American

legacy that continues to roil the

cultural waters today.

THE NIX by Nathan Hill. From the

suburban Midwest to New York City to

the 1968 riots that rocked Chicago and

beyond, the story explores with sharp

humor and a fierce tenderness, the

resilience of love and home, even in

times of radical change. Samuel

Anderson’s search uncovers long-

buried secrets that stretch across

generations and to their origin in

Norway.

SHE’S COME UNDONE by Wally Lamb is

his homage to the strength and power

of women. Felix is a baby boomer film

scholar who has an experience that

forces him to reflect on the three

unforgettable women who changed his

life. Magical movies take him back in

time and, as we learn about him, we

also gain insight into cultural attitudes

toward women over the decades.

THE SPORT OF KINGS by C. E. Morgan.

The story is an epic novel about

thoroughbred horse racing, racism,

wealth, poverty, and family

relationships. Set in Kentucky, it takes

twists and turns through generations

of landowners and the descendants of

Lewis and Clark. This same route was

taken by Catholic priest Pierre Jean De

Smet when he ministered to the Nez

Perce Indians. The author incorporates

details of those historic journeys along

with his trip. Each journey’s success

was dependent on strangers to guide

them through the rugged Bitterroot

Mountains.

BELLEVUE by David Oshinsky. Bellevue

began as an almshouse infirmary in

1736. Through the years, it grew in

size and respectability. Almost every

disease and medical problem has

passed through its doors. Its medical

researchers have developed lifesaving

vaccines and medical procedures.

Bellevue has never turned a patient

away regardless of ability to pay. One

ER doctor has described Bellevue as a

war zone of medicine. A fascinating

read.

THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD by

Elizabeth Alexander. This poignant

memoir, a Pulitzer Prize finalist, is the

story of a great love and happy

marriage that ended too soon in

sudden death, and how the author

traveled through shock, grief and

recovery. For such a short book, it's

rich in both emotional and everyday

detail and it's powerfully moving.

MEMBER KUDOS

Without question, one of

the great heroes of

100 months, maintained

and curated all the art

that hangs on our walls.

His incredible taste and
