How in the world has January passed us by and we are already fast approaching mid-February?! It always seems that the Spring semester moves at a much quicker pace than fall. Before we know it, Spring Break will be upon us and we will be scrambling to achieve everything we set out to achieve with the start of the New Year. If you feel like your to-do list has grown – instead of shrink – here are a few thoughts from Hannah Brencher (http://hannahbrencher.com/) for how to progress.
1. Do one small thing 2. Get organized on paper
3. Make a choice and stick with it
Do one small thing: It is easy to get overwhelmed by the vast quantity of tasks on our plate each day. We have to start somewhere. Sometimes that is as simple as selecting an item on your to-do list and diving into it. No matter how large or small – it is one thing you can cross off. Get organized on paper: Whether you like a to do list, a planner, post it notes, or some version of digital organization – find it and work it. It is vital that we track our business tasks, mark our progress, and reprioritize as new things are added to the list. Finding one consistent method of organization will prove most beneficial. Make a choice and stick with it: We work in the ever-changing field of Higher Education. Trends change, students change, and the security of our field changes. When we find ourselves working on a project – it is best to commit to a project, make a plan, and work the plan. At each semester, we can reevaluate if that project is still relevant and if the plan needs updating. Keep up the work team. As we head into our new reorganization, this provides a continued opportunity to review our projects, policies, and procedures as we explain them to new leadership. This reorganization opens doors to look at our work through a new lens and take the Morris University and Student Success Center to new heights of success. Here’s an Irish saying to keep in your mind as you move through the remainder of this month:
May you always have work for your hands to do. May your pockets hold always a coin or two. May the sun shine bright on your windowpane. May the rainbow be certain to follow each rain. May the hand of a friend always be near you.

Anna Pavlik, department supervisor for the Morris University Center (MUC) Cougar Store, is the recipient of the February Employee Recognition Award. Anna was nominated by Jamie Matthews with support from Emily Colton, Ryann Heap and Karen Swanner.
"Anna exceeds all expectations put forth by her supervisor and other parts of the MUC staff. Since Anna began in the Cougar Store, there has been a new feeling. This is largely due to the initiative and creativity that Anna brings to her work," said Matthews, MUC assistant director. "She thrives to make the Cougar Store a place that meets the varied needs, interests, and price points of all individuals of the SIUE community. Anna has put the Cougar Store on the map in terms of social media." "Anna has excellent organizational skills and is creative, responsible, trustworthy and cooperative," said Colton, assistant director for the Cougar Store and Textbook Service. "She pitches in wherever she is needed. She is well-‐liked and gets along well with managers, coworkers and students. She has an excellent rapport with student staff. She is a very good buyer and has brought in a wide variety of new SIUE clothing and gift items which have increased our sales." "Thank you so much for selecting me as SIUE’s February Employee of the Month. It is a joy to work in the Morris University Center, and I feel extremely lucky to be a part of such a great team serving the faculty, students and staff of SIUE."
Staff Spotlight: Kim Olson Kim Olson joined the MUC Team in October as the Special Events Facilitator in
Event Services! Kim has hit the ground running and is a very positive leader in our facility and across campus sitting on several committees. Kim, originally from the metro east area, went to college in Pensacola, FL and most recently worked at the Hyatt in St. Louis. She enjoys spending time and playing baseball with her 4 year old son, Carson. When she has time, she also enjoys crafting and finding the next Pinterest project to tackle. One coworker who nominated her for this spotlight commented: “Kim is fairly new to the MUC team but has caught on quickly. She is successfully holding down the fort in Event Services. Kudos to all her hard work and her lovely personality. Kim is
a joy to work with and I'm glad she joined the team.” Thanks for being an EXCELLENT part of the MUC team, Kim!
Marketing Updates The MUC Marketing Department is working harder than ever to create awareness for students, faculty, staff, alumni and the general public about all the exceptional products and services we have to offer at the Morris University Center. Directed by Marketing Specialist Karen Swanner and staffed by some of the most talented students on campus, the department has taken on several major projects in the past two months including, redecorating the Textbook Service Hallway, with a lifelike bowling alley; giant plates for each dining location at the MUC; merchandise vinyl’s; a pathway of textbooks with the do’s and don’ts of taking care of your books; and giant canned goods for the charitable side. Additionally, the staff have held two special promotions, which included a booth with games and activities to help promote Stay Mobile and Cougar Lanes.
If you take a look around the Morris University Center, you will notice new photos, posters, displays and signage that the MUC Marketing Department and its creative staff is putting up to help everyone learn more about what the MUC is all about. We are still here to service MUC departments with their printing needs, but with the addition of a Marketing and Promotions philosophy, we can now provide you with so much more! NEW POSITION MUC Marketing is currently looking for an additional student worker to
assist with their communication needs. This person should be well versed in photography, marketing, social media, marketing, promotions and graphic design. For more information contact Karen Swanner, [email protected]. We look forward to what this position can add to all of our operations!
