A message from our CEO Tony Stephenson.
First of all let me say - Welcome to the new look IBIS Care Miranda.
Over the past 12 months there have been significant changes to the IBIS
Care Miranda building, the IBIS Care team, and of course the name of the facility. Our priority at IBIS Care is to provide consistent quality care to
residents, families and carers, and in order for us to achieve this level of care, certain changes needed to occur.
The structural updates to the facility itself are in full swing. With Level 1
nearing completion, we are approximately half way through room makeovers. Our goal with updating the rooms is to ensure all rooms are at
their highest functional state for residents, staff and visitors. In addition to better functionality, we also want to provide a fresher, brighter appearance.
We hope you are all enjoying the improvements we have provided so far to the rooms and welcome feedback on other changes that may benefit the
community of IBIS Care Miranda.
As you may have also noticed, there are many new faces amongst the IBIS Care team. We strive to provide value and quality service to our residents,
not only through fixtures and facilities, but through our team members. I am sure most of you have already met your new Executive Services
Manager, Toni Thibaud. >>

IBIS Care Miranda
Toni is leading the management team towards improving the delivery of
quality service and has a personal message to all residents, family and staff
on page 3. New members of Toni’s team include Care Manager Kylie Gough
and Lifestyle Co-ordinator Jodie Parker. You can also read more about these
very important people within the pages of this issue.
As I mentioned earlier, while the trading name has changed, the company
name and structure will remain unchanged. These changes will have no
impact on existing residential and staff agreements. We feel the new name
is in alignment with the facility changes and joins us at the perfect time.
Over the coming months our digital presence will also receive a makeover.
This newsletter is an example of how we are moving forward with updating
our procedures and the overall look of the facility. The new look newsletter
will be available on the IBIS Care website for download and also
subscription. We strongly encourage family members to subscribe to the
automatic delivery of the newsletter, as it will provide an up to date account
of what is going on within the IBIS Care community.
Again, I would like to extend a warm welcome to the new team members
and provide assurance to the IBIS Care residents, and their families, that we
are successfully working towards improving the quality of services and care
at IBIS Care Miranda.
Tony Stephenson.

Welcome to the new look IBIS Care Miranda, it is a very
exciting time. Not only are we seeing new additions to the facility, like the
modern make-over of rooms, hallways and external buildings, we are experiencing new changes to staff
members, recreational activities and our new look Newsletter.
As most of you are aware, I myself am a new addition to IBIS Care
Miranda. My previous positions with Hardy and Lendlease as Facility
Manager, and my position of Deputy Director of Nursing for the Salvation Army, provided experience and
knowledge of how rewarding and fulfilling a role in Aged Care truly is.
When I was offered the opportunity to come to IBIS Care Miranda as the
Executive Services Manager, it was the friendly faces, the extensive
outdoor areas and the gardens that convinced me that this was a role I
would enjoy immensely.
My introduction to the facility has been an exciting, yet very busy, few
months. I have been overseeing all of the proposed changes and regularly
meeting with staff members to
identify additional changes that will make our residents stay more
fulfilling. My focus at IBIS Care Miranda is to ensure all Residents are
enjoying daily life amongst the IBIS Care community.
Although my role is a busy one, I am never too busy to stop for a chat or
hear your feedback on improving the facility or the services we provide. If you don’t get the chance to see me
personally, please find our feedback forms located at the Resident
Information Centres located on the ground floor opposite the lift, and
also opposite the extension dining room.
Again, thank you for your contribution to the IBIS Care Miranda facility, as we all know, it is not the
building that makes a home, it is the people who live within it.

W elcome to the newest members of the IBIS Care Miranda team. There have

You will be greeted with a friendly smile every single day of the week at IBIS Care Miranda. Amanda is our
Customer Service Co-ordinator and she is stationed at the front door of the facility. Amanda has also come
from an Aged Care background with a previous position at Kennedy Health Care. She is highly experienced in
sorting out the needs of visitors, especially friends and family. Amanda finds her role in Aged Care very

Dayrel’s role at IBIS Care is
extensive, not only is she in charge of covering the
Environmental workers and laundry departments, she is a
dedicated leader to the clinical staff and is diligent in keeping
absolutely everything working in an orderly fashion. “I want to
make the environment homey for the residents, I want their new
surroundings to reflect what their home may have felt like”, Dayrel
says. “I love all of the changes happening and I can see how the facility is improving and becoming a better
place for the residents”, she adds. “For me, it’s all about the residents.”

Monday to Friday you will find Troy running the IBIS Care Blakehurst kitchen, which he
has done for the past 4 years, however, he can now be found floating around IBIS Care
Miranda early morning or late afternoon as he oversees the Food Safety Program, alongside
the IBIS Care Miranda regular Chefs, Gloria and Peter.
Troy has always had a passion for cooking, even from a very young age he pondered the
idea of becoming a chef whilst topping and tailing beans with his nana. It wasn’t long before he found himself running kitchens in fine dining establishments and hotels across Sydney, his culinary journey eventually leading him to aged care.
“I never got to see my daughter, Kayla, grow up. Having to work split shifts and controlling a kitchen brigade of chefs serving up to 3 or 4 weddings simultaneously every weekend
was a very busy time in my life. Now with my son, Cameron, I have been able to watch him grow due to now having the pleasure of cooking in aged care”, Troy says. “I love
working in aged care as the change of pace is nice. I respect the fact I’m a guest in their house and I cater to each residents individual needs”, he adds.

Kylie is excited about the challenges at IBIS Care in regards to the project
that is currently underway and is grateful for the opportunity to be a
part of implementing positive change at the facility.
Residents and Visitors will find Kylie’s
friendly face travelling throughout the facility for most of the day, as she
assists residents and guides staff towards creating a better lifestyle for
the IBIS Care Miranda community.

Jodie has recently
joined IBIS Care Miranda as the

ordinator. Jodie has been working
in Aged Care since 2004 and holds
her Certificate 3 in Aged Care and Certificate 4 and Diploma in
Lifestyle and Leisure. It was her natural ability to make Residents smile and laugh that encouraged her previous employer to assist
her in becoming fully qualified.

good laugh and making memories. Her role at IBIS Care Miranda is to entertain
the residents by providing exciting activities for them to participate in. From concerts,
clothing displays and bus trips to simple walks and games and puzzles. Jodie is dedicated to ensuring all residents feel included and

‘Anne’
Anne
Born as Nevilia Anne Gunning Wyatt in
London, Anne, as she prefers to be called, comes from a very distinguished lineage
dating back to William the Conqueror!
For those with an interest in English Royalty, Anne’s direct family tree includes Adela de
Normandy, a daughter of William the Conqueror. Adela was also the mother of
Stephen, King of England and Henry of Blois, Bishop of Winchester.
Throughout her life, Adela had an active role
in English Politics and was famed for endowing Churches, so much so, she is a
Saint in the Roman Catholic Church. Upon her death, prayers were offered at a number
of churches that she had endowed personally or had recognised at some point in her life.
As interesting as Adela de Normandy was,
Anne’s family tree is additionally rooted to the woods of Robin Hood. John Lackland,
King of England, became a favourite with stories depicting Robin Hood times due to
his, sometimes dangerous, personality traits. John of Gaunt, Edward Longshanks and
Richard III also occupy branches on Anne’s chronicalised tree.
Closer to Anne was her grandfather, Frank
Wyatt, who commisioned the Duke of York’s Theatre in London in 1892. The theatre
opened on September 10 1892 as the Trafalgar Square Theatre, however, a few
years later the name was changed to The Duke of York’s Theatre to honour the future
King George V.
At the age of 17 Anne joined the Women’s Royal Naval Services, popularly known as
the Wrens. Her devoted service on the fleet firearm ships awarded her a medal.
When the war was over, Anne decided to
add some branches to her very own family tree when she met Leonard Palmer. Leonard
served in the Army as a Desert Rat, a name commonly given to the British 7th and 8th
Armoured Division. The couple married in 1948 and decided to come to Australia,
initially staying with Leonard’s aunt in Caringbah and eventually making their
family home in Woolooware where the couple raised a son and a daughter.
Anne involved herself in a number of work
practices, starting at a Dry Cleaner in Cronulla before her first child was born. As
the children got older she then returned to work, however, this time she tried her hand
at Accounts for a Doctor and Chiropractor, which proved successful as she continued to
work for several years before finally retiring.
In 1989 Anne sadly said good-bye to her Desert Rat, Leonard, when he passed away
and it wasn’t until 2014 that Anne joined us here at IBIS Care Miranda.
Anne is a valued member of our community and we thank her for sharing her story with us.
Do you have a story to tell?
Please let the Lifestyle Co-ordinator or member of
the Lifestyle team know.
We would love to hear it.

IBIS Care Miranda Resident of the Month.
‘Anne’ Nevilia Palmer
IBIS Care Miranda .07
This month we will be enjoying a wide variety of activities designed with the consideration of all residents
entertainment needs.
Firstly, I would like to let you all know that we have
introduced a once a month barbecue gathering. This will be an activity that will move to a fortnightly schedule in
Summer. The barbecue gathering is an opportunity for us to come together to enjoy the traditional Aussie past-time
of throwing a sausage on the BBQ, which I am sure most of you have dabbled in once or twice.
Also, for our residents who enjoy a little snack occassionally, we have installed
a vending machine, displaying chips, chocolates and drinks, it’s available for use by all residents and visitors. If you need assistance with the machine, our
staff members are always happy to help.
Tuesday is a great day at IBIS Care Miranda as it is a day allocated to adventure. Join us on the bus for a trip to a local lunch venue, sightseeing
expedition or a spot of shopping. This year the facility will also be providing a bus with a lifter. The addition of a lifter will assist us with a no-fuss means of
transporting our residents in wheelchairs. This will hopefully encourage all residents to take up the opportunity of getting out and about.
On a Wednesday afternoon, you will find two friendly volunteers available for
nail treatments. Keeping your nails trim and tidy can be a difficult task, therefore our lovely volunteers have offered their services for you to enjoy on a
weekly basis.
Coffee shop Thursday has also come to IBIS Care with the recent instalment of
a coffee machine. Coffee Shop Thursday is held in the main sitting room near the entrance of the facility. Why not come down, find a nice comfortable chair,
sit back and enjoy a conversation over a warm capuccino.
Other activities you will now find in full swing throughout the facility include ice-cream afternoons, whiteboard games and balloon and ball games. We of
course have the very popular game of bingo operating, along with other non-physical activities, like; dominos, jigsaw puzzles and colouring in.
My role as Lifestyle Co-ordinator at IBIS Care Miranda is to provide daily
entertainment for all of you, and I will do my very best to encourage all of you to join in on the fun. Please don’t forget to make a note of the exciting
activities coming up. I have created a very handy calendar, displayed on the back cover of this newsletter for you to keep. If you have any questions about
times or dates, please do not hesitate to ask me, or one of the IBIS Care Miranda staff, for more information.
Until next month, I hope you enjoy the lifestyle activities and entertainment
program I have put together for you.

Coming UP at IBIS Care Miranda...
S t Patrick’s Day Performance.
It is the day of the festival of Patrick, a Saint of
Ireland. Held on the 17th of March, St Patricks
Day celebrates the heritage and culture of the
Irish. Traditionally an event boasting the colour Green, it
is a day that recognises the work of St Patrick who was
said to have used the Shamrock to explain the Holy
Trinity to the Pagan Irish. The Shamrock of course being
the colour green. Green was also used to represent the
regenerative powers of nature, with which St Patrick was
a firm believer. The colour green has been associated with
Ireland since at least the 1640s.
We look forward to spreading a little green cheer on this
day.
When: 17th March.

The benefits of creating through Art…
> Art is a natural way to
encourage calm and relaxation.
> As children we are provided the materials to keep
ourselves occupied with art, we are also encouraged to use art to express ourselves. Art is
an easy form of self expression and you can make
something unique to keep.
> The practise of creating,
making or crafting is a meditation we can all enjoy
without a great deal of effort or the need for expensive materials.
Please join us in creating Art From The Heart.

The Mens Shed.
You may have been wondering what’s
happening with the Mens Shed.
Unfortunately with the structural
changes that have been occurring at the
facility, the Mens Shed has been used as
storage for the tradesmen.
The future, however, looks bright. We are currently in the process of enquiring about
getting a few things fixed in order to make the Mens Shed an activity area for male
residents. These things include, getting the floor outside fixed so that we can have an
outfit area, along with the Mens Shed space on the inside. We plan to provide a weekly
mens get together, where we will play board games and indulge in ‘manly’ things, for
example; enjoying a few beers over ‘man talk’.
The builders are currenly still occupying this area, however, once they are finished we will
move the ideas into action and the Mens Shed will once again be operational.

1564 The Artist Michelangelo
died in Rome. Born Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Sim oni,
the artist was considered to be the greatest living artist during his lifetime. He was an
Italian sculptor, painter, architect, poet and engineer of the High Renaissance.
1793 France declared war on Britain and
the Netherlands. Known as the French Revolutionary Wars, it started as an act of
defiance against orders by the government of Paris and ended in tears when the instigator
lost all loyalty of his troops and in the end defected to his Austrian competitor.
1867 In the US bricklayers start working
8 hour days. Workers march in 1867 celebrating the achievement of the 8 hour
day. Although the 8 hour day law was eventually passed, it did inevitably fall when
companies started hiring ‘cheap labour’ to accommodate the longer hours - typically a
10 hour day.
1885 The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was published in the US for the first
time. Written by Mark Twain, it is a story told in the first person by Huckleberry ‘Huck’ Finn
and the adventures the 14 year old experiences amongst the people and places of
the Mississippi River. The work was criticised by many, due to it use of course language
and racial slurs, with the word ‘nigger’ used regularly throughout the novel.
1930 Elm Farm Ollie became the first
cow to fly in an aeroplane. Also known as Nellie-Jay or Sky Queen, Elm Farm ollie was
in fact the first cow to fly in an aeroplane. The flight was part of the International Air
Exposition and covered 72 miles, travelling from Missouri to St Louis.
Just for a laugh...
A couple in their nineties are both having short term memory loss. Whilst in for a
check-up, the Physician says that physically they are okay, but since they
are having trouble remembering things, they might want to start writing things
down.
Later that evening they are sitting and reading, when the husband gets up.
“Would you like anything from the kitchen?” he asks his wife.
“Some Vanilla Icecream”, his wife replies.
“Okay.” he says.
“Shouldn’t you write it down so you don’t forget?”, she asks.
“Don’t worry. I won’t forget.”
“Well,” she says. “A few raspberries on top would be great. You want to write
that down?”
“I’ve got it, honey. A bowl of vanilla icecream with raspberries on top.”
“And chocolate sauce too. Maybe you’ll forget that. Want me to write it down for
you?”
A little miffed, he replies, “I’ve got it! Icecream, raspberries and chocolate
sauce. I don’t need it written down. For gosh sakes!”
He waddles out to the kitchen.
A half hour later, he comes back with a plate of ham and scrambled eggs, and
gives it to his wife.
She stares at the plate a few seconds , then says, “you forgot my toast.”
