This month, I am saddened to report the passing of two great gentlemen from
Michigan: Dave Wallace and Bill Winn Sr. Both of these men embodied the qualities that Tom Brokaw christened “The Greatest Generation.”
Dave Wallace wrote the popular Lakeland Boating column “Above the Waterline” for the past 20-plus years. His last column appeared in the November/December 2014 issue.
He passed away on November 28, 2014. Our hearts go out to his family.
Bill Winn Sr. passed away in December 2014. Bill and his three sons founded Four Winns Inc. in 1975. In the span of just 11 years, the company became the third largest boatbuilder in the world.
While growing the company, Bill contributed generously to the community of Cadillac, Michigan, which was home to the Four Winns manufacturing facility. He was married 72 years to his wife, June. You can read more about Bill on page 10 of this issue.
Bill’s son, John, says he was the most giving person he ever met. Knowing him as I did from the sidelines, I would say his greatest achievement and legacy is his family. Our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.
May both Dave and Bill rest in peace.I expect 2015 to be an interesting year with the unveiling of several new boat models from
manufacturers far and wide. We’ve been traveling a good bit recently to get a sneak peek at the latest boats and engines debuting this winter boat show season. Based on our initial observations, we think you’re going to like what you see.
One remarkable trend to note is the influx of new outboards and outboard technology popping up in 2015. Seems outboards are, and have been, undergoing somewhat of a renaissance — both in terms of styling and colors and the size and performance capabilities of the boats they’re pushing.
One can’t-miss story this month is Craig Ritchie’s piece on the salt mines buried deep below the surface of Lake Erie (page 42). I certainly didn’t know about this amazing mining operation that occurs every day right beneath the waters we love and boat on, and I’d be willing to bet some of you also may be unaware. It’s a fascinating story, and one that’s worth the read.

Seeing the Sights (For Real)Thank you for publishing the short blurb and picture of my relatives alongside the moose in your January 2015 issue’s “Mail Call” department (“Seeing the Sights,” p. 6). Unfortunately, it was the wrong picture. Not your fault. I’m not too swift with computers, and undoubtedly I selected the wrong picture. When you view this picture (a little girl and a dog on my pontoon boat), you’ll recognize the error.
I originally sent the picture because it was so endearing. Kenna is 2-and-a-half years old, and Sadie (the dog) is 8 or 9 years old. My original caption for it was “Start ’em Young.” This picture and caption was intended to capture the essence of the boating industry’s push to “grow boating” that I’ve been reading about for the past several years now.

Industry Mourns Loss of Four Winns Patriarch Bill WinnWilliam H. (Bill) Winn, patriarch of Four Winns, passed away on December 9 at the age of 92.
Winn was born in Hamilton, Ohio, and enlisted in the Army to fi ght during World War II. Afterwards, he graduated from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in business.
In 1975, Winn started Four Winns Inc. with his three sons — Charlie, Bill Jr. and John. The “four Winns” manufactured
fi berglass powerboats in Cadillac, Michigan.From the fi rst year the company made a profi t,
Winn started an employee profi t sharing program. He was huge into volunteering and giving back to the community. Winn was famous for wearing a button that said “RMA,” for Right Mental Attitude, and he was the epitome of that attitude.
Winn was married to his wife of 72 years, June C. Hathorn, who survives him.

Great Lakes Commission Supports Asian Carp Legislation The attack against Asian carp continues. Michigan Rep. Dave Camp (R-MI) and Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) introduced new legislation in December 2014 that would reduce the risk of Asian carp entering the Great Lakes.
The legislation suggests implementing control measures at the Brandon Road lock and damn on the Des Plaines River in Joliet, Illinois. The Great Lakes Commission, along with a bipartisan group of members of Congress, supported the legislation.
“It’s critical that we take quick action to reduce the risk of Asian carp invading the Great Lakes while we develop a long-term solution to permanently prevent the transfer of all aquatic invasive species between the Great Lakes and Mississippi River watersheds,” says Great Lakes Commission chairman Kelly Burch.

A bill to continue a key Great Lakes environmental cleanup program for five more years has officially stalled in Congress.
The House of Representatives approved the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative extension December 9, 2014, for the next five years at $300 million per year; but the Senate adjourned without taking it up — meaning the issue is dead until the next session begins in January.
The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative was launched in 2010 with the support of the Obama administration and has provided more than $1.6 billion to aid restoration projects in the Great Lakes region, including cleaning up toxic pollution and protecting the waters from invasive species.

Chicago E15 Mandate Debate Delayed Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel delayed Alderman Ed Burke’s ethanol bill that would require city gas stations to offer E15, gasoline that contains a 15 percent ethanol blend.
On December 8, 2014, the Chicago City Council postponed Chicago’s E15 Consumers Choice Ordinance 02014-5037. Emanuel stated that the bill “needs more work,” before it could pass, according to an article published in the Chicago Tribune.
The E15 plan is widely opposed by boaters due to the damaging effects that fuel additives have on boat engines. In 2010, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released a regulation that E15 cannot be used in boats, motorcycles, lawnmowers or cars built before 2001. According to BoatUS, the corrosive nature of high blends of ethanol in gasoline puts more boaters at risk for damages to hoses, gaskets and seals that keep engines running safely.

Water Levels Rebound at Record PaceDespite taking a signifi cant nosedive within the last 24 months, Great Lakes water levels are once again on the rise.
Two years ago, in January 2013, Lakes Michigan and Huron were at a record low, and have recently gone on a record-breaking rebound. Three of the fi ve Great Lakes have recovered their water levels at a record pace.
According to a recent article on WEATHER.COM, Lake Superior gained 2.3 feet from January 2013 through November 2014, and Lakes Michigan and Huron increased by 3.2 feet during the same period. The increase was the fastest ever recorded for Superior and the second fastest for Huron and Michigan. Experts say it’s the fi rst time since the late 1990s that Michigan, Huron and Superior were all above their averages simultaneously.
The Army Corps forecasts: Lakes Michigan and Huron to be 15-21 inches higher than last year; Lake Superior to remain 9-10 inches over a year ago; Lake Erie to be 5-11 inches deeper than last year; and Lake Ontario about 2-5 inches below last year.

This year marks the 57th annual Detroit Boat Show, which cruises into the Cobo Center Valentine’s Day, February 14. This time around, however, attendees will see the show in a much larger space — 50,000 square feet larger, in fact.
The Detroit Boat Show will span a total of 350,000 square feet. This is the fourth year in a row that the show has grown and added more space and exhibits.

Checks and BalancesThree systems every new boat owner should know.
Congratulations! You’ve just bought your first boat. Now the real fun begins as you set about learning the
operation and function of the various systems on board your new acquisition. To help boost your maritime learning curve, here are three common systems every new boat owner should be familiar with.
DC Electrical System When it comes to your boat’s DC electrical system, knowledge is power. Smart boaters will familiarize themselves with major components and how they interact to provide juice to the various systems and equipment on board before problems arise.
■ Parts you should know on sight: DC system components you should become intimately familiar with include the battery, primary on/off battery switch, and the location of any breakers or fuses within the system.
■ Spare parts you should carry and be able to change/f ix: If your DC system requires fuses, knowing where they are and having spares for each type (cartridge, spade, etc.) is a must. Read through the owner’s manuals of any electrical equipment you have installed (to determine if they have any internal fuses), and don’t forget to carry spares for any unusual or specialty fuses you may need (engine starting, AC inverters, etc.).
In addition to the tools commonly found in a basic kit, the number-one item you’ll want to make sure you have on board when troubleshooting your DC system is a multimeter. It’s indispensable for tracing DC voltages, testing fuses and tracking down broken wires or corroded connectors. You don’t need anything fancy, as multimeters can be found at stores such as Harbor Freight for as little as $5. There’s no excuse for not having one in your toolkit.
Other good-to-have items include a 15-foot jumper wire with alligator clips on each end (to help troubleshoot wiring circuits); crimp-on butt and terminal connectors; wire stripper/crimpers; heat shrink and liquid electrical tape (for sealing connections); WD40 (or a similar corrosion inhibitor); a small wire brush (for clearing away corrosion); and possibly a small assortment of wire (various lengths and sizes).
Fuel SystemWhile folks may say getting there is half the fun, it’s obvious they’ve never been stranded on the water due to a stalled engine. If it happens to you, you’ll find getting your boat moving again will be all the fun you’re looking for. More often than not, an on-water, no-go event will likely involve the fuel system.
■ Parts you should know on sight: This is another system that you should be able to trace out (from tank fill to engine) beforehand. Although these can vary slightly
(depending on your particular boat and fuel system), components you should be able to locate and ID include fuel tank inspection panels (which provide access to the fuel tank fittings), primer bulb (if so equipped), fuel hose connections, and the fuel filter.
■ Spare parts you should carry and be able to change/f ix:Spare filter cartridges (or filter elements depending on the filter) and a filter wrench.
Sanitation SystemWith the possible exception of “Where’s all this water coming from?,” probably no other proclamation strikes more fear in a boat owner’s heart than “The toilet isn’t working for some reason,” particularly when you realize that the issue typically doesn’t make itself known until after “the deed” has already been done.
■ Parts you should know on sight: This depends on the type of marine sanitation system you have installed. Gravity feed toilets (a.k.a. Porta Potty-type units) are pretty simple and work just like the name implies. They have a bowl that essentially dumps its contents directly into an integral holding tank, which can be removed and dumped in the appropriate receptacle ashore once back at the dock.
Flush water for the bowl is typically supplied by an internal reservoir; however, some larger units can be plumbed to draw flush water from the vessel’s potable water system, as well as to a deck pump-out fitting so they can be emptied without removing the holding tank.
Permanently mounted sanitation systems found aboard small- to mid-size boats will typically include a flush water intake through-hull and seacock (although this also may be plumbed to the boat’s fresh water system in some cases), manual or electric flush toilet, holding tank, and a deck fitting for dockside pump-outs. Other things you may see (depending on the system) include a “Y” selector valve (which allows you to discharge bowl contents directly overboard or into a holding tank), vented loop (to prevent back siphoning and flooding), macerator pump, and an overboard discharge through-hull and seacock.
■ Spare parts you should carry and be able to change/f ix:Depending on the type of system you have, spare parts can range from gaskets and seals to entire rebuild kits for the toilet pump. A great place to look for advice would be the owner’s manual, which will typically provide a suggested list of spare parts. A basic tool kit containing screw drivers, a socket set, etc., as well as a few extra hose clamps also will come in handy, particularly if you disassemble hose runs and such to look for clogs (yep, a job that’s just as nasty as it sounds). ★ P

Head SelectionHow to choose the ideal facilities for your boat.
On all but the smallest of vessels, having some form of sanitary facilities is pretty much essential — and those
facilities can run the gamut from basic to luxurious. On my first boat, the toilet consisted of no more than a cedar bucket, which was dumped over the side once it had been, ahem, used. It worked well, I have to admit: There was no plumbing to worry about, it was cheap, and anyone could use it with no instruction — but it could hardly be called luxurious. It’s also worth mentioning that non-discharge areas had yet to be introduced, and environmental concerns were not especially high on peoples’ priority list.
Things have changed somewhat since those days, and with increasing environmental awareness holding tanks are now de rigueur aboard every boat, pretty much relegating that cedar bucket to a thing of the past.
The entirety of the Great Lakes is a non-discharge zone, making it illegal to dump raw, untreated sewage into the water. This means that waste must be contained on board the vessel and disposed of later at a shoreside facility. On all but the smallest of boats, waste is contained in what’s commonly termed a “holding tank,” a plastic or metal tank into which toilet contents are flushed, which is then pumped out when it becomes full at a marine or other facility with the correct equipment.
Chemical toiletChances are that any new boat will come with a suitable toilet, but what about older vessels — or if you want to upgrade to something grander?
For small boats such as center consoles or bowriders, often with a head compartment built into the console, the best bet is usually the ubiquitous chemical toilet. In days gone by, these were barely a jump up from the cedar bucket, but modern versions have two separate tanks: One for flushing water and another for waste, which can be detached from the toilet and carried ashore for disposal. Simple-to-install chemical toilets require no external plumbing and can be bought for less than $100 from your local marine or RV supply store.
Manual marine headFor longer stays aboard or on larger vessels, the next step up is the manual marine head, which, as its name suggests, requires no electricity to operate; and, unlike the plastic chemical toilet, these have a proper china bowl. A pump is built into the side of the toilet, which draws water into the bowl and flushes waste into a holding tank. Manual toilets are a good choice on sailboats that may have limited amounts of electricity aboard; however, when guests come
aboard, there’s something of a learning curve for those not accustomed to these types of toilets. Clogging is a common problem, often due to insufficient flushing, as waste may have to be pumped some distance from the toilet bowl to the holding tank.
Electric toiletElectric toilets are simpler to operate and, in many cases, are really just manual versions to which an electric motor has been added to take the effort out of flushing. More sophisticated models have programmable controls so that the flush cycle is timed, thus ensuring waste is fully and completely sent to the holding tank.
I recently installed an electric marine toilet on my own boat and can vouch for the simplicity with which the whole system works. With merely the push of a button, the toilet goes through the flush cycle and is foolproof — even when we have novice boaters aboard.
Vacuum systemThe largest of boats that have two or more heads often have a vacuum system. Because pipe runs are longer, electric pumps would have to run excessively to pull waste to the holding tank. This not only is irritating because of the pump noise, but holding thanks fill prematurely, since more water is needed with each flush. A vacuum head works in much the same way as a toilet on a airplane; a vacuum is generated which sucks the waste using little water into the holding tank. Often, instead of a bulkhead-mounted electric switch, the head is flushed by pressing down on a foot pedal at the base of the toilet.
Choosing wiselySo when the time comes to upgrade your head, which will you choose? It really comes down to three things: The type of boating that you do; your budget; and what sort of boat you have.
If the boat is small, you may find that a chemical toilet is all you need; cheap to install with no complicated plumbing. Stepping up to manual or electric toilet fits the bill for the majority of boaters and is more akin to the facilities that you have at home; but you’ll need more room for this style of head. Also, don’t forget that you’ll need to install hoses, skin fittings and a holding tank if these are not already aboard.
The cost for all this work and equipment easily can stretch into the thousands, so it pays to do your homework in advance. Look at friends’ boats, visit boat shows and get an estimate from your marina or boatyard before making a final decision. ★ P

LB: The new V MAX SHO 115 and 175 join the successful line of Yamaha V MAX SHO outboards. Why did you introduce these new models?Meeler: Yamaha’s SHO high-performance four-stroke outboards have been a runaway success since their introduction in 2010. To deliver good looks and hot performance for increasingly popular mid-size boats, Yamaha expanded the SHO line. We’ve also introduced new V MAX SHO 250 and 150 models in 25-inch shaft options for deep-vee, multi-species and pontoon boats. We now offer a full line from 115 to 250 horsepower.
LB: Why are they so appealing to freshwater boaters and anglers?Meeler: The SHO marked the first time that light weight and power, the hallmarks of two-stroke engines, were combined with the civility of four-strokes, known for quiet and clean manners and outstanding fuel economy. Professional anglers loved them immediately. They’re perfect for blasting between fishing holes or making long runs over big water and winding lakes in the Midwest. LB: For what boats are they best suited?Meeler: The V MAX SHO 175 is perfect for 18- to 19-foot fiberglass and aluminum fishing boats. They are feature-rich and have the power and good looks to match. Not to be outdone is the V MAX SHO 115, ideal for boats in the 17-foot range. It’s the lightest DOHC four-stroke 115 on the market.
LB: What about fuel economy?Meeler: A significant reason four-strokes represent more than 85 percent of today’s outboard market is outstanding fuel efficiency, offering up to 40 percent better economy than their carbureted predecessors. On the SHO, this is achieved with an advanced electronic control module and the array of eight on-engine sensors. And we continue to make them lighter, further increasing fuel economy.
LB: What makes them so environmentally friendly?Meeler: The engine oil is contained in a crankcase, similar to
a car. There’s no oil to mix with the gas, no smoke and no risk of spilling. All SHOs meet or exceed federal and CARB regulations. Every boater who’s back-trolled in a light following breeze with an older outboard will appreciate how clean they are.
LB: Yamaha recently introduced a new portable, inline, four-stroke F8. What are its advantages for smaller boats?Meeler: Portable outboards have to be powerful, easy to use, fuel efficient and light. The two-cylinder F8 is clean, quiet and simple to operate. Displacement has been increased for more “grunt,” while its streamlined intake system and electronic engine control module provide great fuel economy. Added features
include integrated carrying handles and “resting pads” on the back of the engine for space-saving
storage. There’s a new, shorter ergonomic tiller handle and a redesigned shift lever for easier operation. We’ve topped it off with a matched aluminum propeller and updated graphics similar to the sleek and progressive look of our larger
outboards. Take all that, make it weigh only 88 pounds and able to fit both 15- and 20-inch transoms, and you’ve got a Yamaha-reliable, portable powerhouse that’s ideal for smaller boats.
LB: Yamaha’s most popular outboard, the F150, also is updated for 2015. How has Yamaha improved this iconic outboard?Meeler: Incredibly fuel-efficient, Yamaha’s F150 dual overhead cam outboard has been a huge success since its introduction in 2004. It has long been our best-selling outboard, so there wasn’t much to improve on. Still, it was time for an update. We fine-tuned the looks by updating the cowling and graphics. We used new, high-strength, lightweight materials to make the engine 2 pounds lighter. Increased durability and reduced sound levels were achieved by adding protective cladding to the powerhead, which also prevents damage when removing or replacing the cowling. W intertime in Michigan can be exquisite, even breathtaking at times, and all the while people
still complain. That’s because they haven’t yet discovered the West Michigan winter destination that transforms glistening snow from a burdensome chore to remove from sidewalks and scrape off car windows to thrilling activities meant for sheer enjoyment. Of course we’re taking about the Muskegon Winter Sports Complex.
“I hear a lot of people say they come out here to decompress and relax and get back out to nature,” says Jim Rudicil, executive director of the Muskegon Winter Sports Complex. “You can do that here because we have so many things that we offer in terms of luging, cross country skiing, ice skating and snowshoeing. It’s more about getting out, moving around, and staying in tune with nature.”
Winter wonderland Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, the Muskegon Winter Sports Complex provides enthralling winter sports and events for the local community. It’s known for having one of just four luge tracks in the county, 5 miles of lighted cross-country ski trails, and a unique quarter-mile, figure eight ice skating trail through the woods, all neighboring beautiful Lake Michigan.
The complex was started in 1984 through a community- wide initiative called “New Muskegon,” to help diversify the Muskegon economy. In 1990, the Winter Sports Lodge
was built, and the luge track was redesigned to “increase safety and elevate the level of fun,” Rudicil says.
The 850-foot-long track was designed by three-time Olympian Frank Masley and consists of six curves and two starting areas. The luge track provides “the Olympic thrill with the safety of the participant in mind,” according to the Muskegon Winter Sports Complex website. Public thrill-seekers will slide up to speeds of 30 mph!
“It’s the most publically accessible luge track,” Rudicil says. “Our track was designed for public use. The other three tracks in the U.S. are extremely fast and are on mountains. This is on the sand dunes, so it gives people the taste of luge without putting them into 80-mile-per-hour situations.”
The complex provides all the
equipment you’ll need to learn how to luge and has coaches on duty that spend about 15 minutes at the beginning of each session to teach luge steering and safety techniques.
Snowy soirees Throughout winter, the Muskegon Winter Sports Complex plays host to several annual large-scale events: The first being “Party in the Parka,” January 24, to celebrate Michigan’s birthday. The event highlights all things Michigan, with everything from Michigan craft beer to handcrafted jewelry made in the state. This year, Michigan turns 178 years old.
Another annual event hosted at the complex is the Michigan Winter Triathlon February 1, which Rudicil calls a “try-athlon,” encouraging people to get out and “try” the winter sports of luging, cross country skiing and speed skating without pressure. All the equipment is provided and instructors are on hand to teach participants the basics of each sport before competing.
Other events throughout the year include the Midwest Luge Championships February 15; the West Michigan Youth Winter Sports Fest February 6-8; and Oktoberfest October 2-3.
More from Muskegon Another noteworthy attraction at the Muskegon Winter Sports Complex is the three snowshoe trails that serve all skill levels — from Woods Loop for the beginner, to the expansive Lake Michigan Loop and Lost Lake Trails.
“Our snowshoe trail traverses the dunes that are right along the Lake Michigan shoreline,” Rudicil says. “When you’re up there, you’re looking at the lake, so, especially for boaters, that’s a good way to pass time in the winter. And you actually can stay warm doing it.”
Muskegon is bustling in winter, with three new local breweries, the beloved Muskegon Lumberjack hockey team that plays at the L.C. Walker Arena, and several great downtown venues, including the Frauenthal Theatre.
“There are great culinary experiences here in Muskegon,” Rudicil says. “We’ve got phenomenal local restaurants. We have a reemerging, reinvented downtown Muskegon with downtown shopping and entertainment, wonderful theatres… and we also have a great Muskegon museum of art that has an amazing collection, as well as the history museum.”

“Essentially that’s a fiberglass track that has all the components of an ice luge as far as curves, but [the sleds] use special wheels to slide,” Rudicil says. “We take our luge sleds, put wheels on them and turn them into summer sleds.”
“30 for 30”To celebrate the complex’s 30th anniversary, in addition to hosting the kick-off event “Party in the Parka,” the complex also invested in 30 new luge sleds. As Rudicil describes, it’s “30 sleds for 30 years.” They had been using the same sleds since 1984 and were in need of new equipment.
The complex is currently offering an Adopt-a-Luge program, where local businesses can sponsors one or more sleds and permanently showcase their business logo, via decal, on the seat of the new sleds for $600.
The celebration continues this year, as the complex is set to construct a yurt, a Mongolian teepee-type structure. And, you guessed it, this yurt will be 30 feet in diameter, going along with the “30 for 30” theme.
The roughly 700-square-foot yurt will be a permanent structure near the luge track and will be developed in partnership with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the DNR Recreation Passport Program. They’re calling the yurt the “tree house” because it’s built up into the air and it has a deck platform built right into the trees.
“Yurts are tents on steroids,” Rudicil says. “This will be a place that we will use in the wintertime for hosting luge class instructions, and then in the summertime we’re going to rent it out for corporate meetings and retreats.”
Down the (frosty) line The five- and 10-year plans for the complex are quite exciting. This spring, they will offer archery as a new component, complete with instructors and an archery range set up for visitors to learn the sport.
“The popularity from kids because of ‘Hunger Games’ seems to be a drive behind that,” Rudicil says.
The Muskegon Winter Sports Complex also is looking at developing a pavilion with a rock-climbing wall and a zip line canopy tour, though these plans are not yet funded.
“Boaters and the people who visit here in the wintertime are always so amazed when they arrive and see the natural resources and the treasure that we have here,” Rudicil says. “We have the deepest harbor on this side of the lake, and Muskegon Lake is wonderful for sailing. And then we have Muskegon State Park and Pere Marquette beaches— we have some of the best beaches. Hopefully we can work as a community to add to the amazing landscape we have here.” H

W hen you buy a premium automobile, you generally get not just luxury and comfort, but performance
and handling as well. The same unfortunately isn’t always true when it comes to boats. Some are packed with luxury and comfort features, but suffer when it comes to performance and speed. That’s especially true with some motoryachts. Slow and steady may win the race, but some like it fast.
Well, Beneteau Group thinks it has a solution to that problem with the Monte Carlo MC4. At just over 45 feet in length, it’s the smallest member of the Monte Carlo range and was designed with an aim to provide both luxury and performance in a sleek, sexy package. So when Beneteau invited me to spend a day with one of the first MC4’s shipped to the United States, I jumped at the chance.

This style of boat is common where the MC4’s heritage lies, which is near the Mediterranean Sea. These sporty flybridge yachts are typically used as dayboats, meaning dockside entertaining, short weekend journeys and occasional vacation cruises are the norm; not long-range cruising. And speed plays an important part in that formula. That’s because without speed, your range is severely shortened, and that limits the areas you can explore in one or two day’s time.
At first glance, the MC4 has an aggressive, almost sports-car-like appearance. That’s thanks mainly to its raked-back, one-piece windshield, the angled lines of the cantilevered flybridge, mirrored tint of the side windows, and the
plumb, hatchet-style bow. Viewed from the side, the MC4 reveals more “shippy” lines, replete with round, in-hull portlights that break up the topsides and a graceful sheer line that climbs elegantly to the bow.
There’s no doubt about it, the MC4 is a definite looker.
The great outdoorsClimb aboard and you’ll see that the above deck/outside spaces on the MC4 are nothing short of
stunning, from stem to stern. Outside entertaining and fun in the sun are definitely what these boats are all about, and it shows.
Starting aft you’ll find an expansive, teak-decked swim platform with plenty of space for transitioning people and toys into and out of the water. How do you transition people in and out of the water,
you may ask? Well hydraulically, of course — the whole swim platform raises and lowers at the flip of a switch. Also back here are a sink and electric grill that are integrated into the transom under a large, hinged fiberglass lid.
Two steps on the starboard side lead up through a walk-through in the transom to the beautiful teak-decked aft cockpit, which has a couch-like settee set into the transom with seating for about five or six people and lots of stowage beneath it. A large hatch in the cockpit sole provides access to the twin Volvo Penta IPS 500 units. There’s plenty of space in the engine room for daily fluid and maintenance checks, and the mechanical systems are laid out with an evident attention to detail. The soundproofing is well executed, too, but more on that later.
One thing I really liked about the cockpit design is that the teak decking runs right through to the main salon via a set of accordion-style/sliding glass doors. That provides a really nice indoor/outdoor entertaining space that flows right into the MC4’s interior.
Steps run up the forward port and starboard ends of the cockpit to the side decks. On the foredeck is a large sun pad area with two supported lounging areas and a Fusion remote for adjusting the stereo. All the way forward is a Lewmar windlass with twin bow lockers on either side and a large anchor roller for the Delta plow.
View from the bridgeThe huge flybridge is accessed via a set of teak steps that are situated on a polished stainless post. It’s done in such a way that the steps appear as if they are floating. Once on the flybridge you’ll find the helm situated forward to starboard. It’s bordered to port by a two-person bench and large sun pad. The upper helm dash has plenty of functionality with a 12-inch Simrad multifunction display, twin tachometers, a rudder indicator, bow thruster and trim tab controls, and engine control panels. The digital engine controls and joystick are to the right of the steering wheel and within easy reach.
Behind the helm is a wet bar where an optional electric grill can be installed. Farther aft, the flybridge is dominated by a huge, C-shaped lounge that I estimate could comfortably entertain about seven or eight people. Centered here is probably one of the most robust teak tables I’ve ever seen on a boat, mounted to a base that is equally as sturdy. I go on more than a few boats where the tables wobble, so it’s worth praising. I also liked the stainless-steel railing all around; it added a nice, secure feel to this seating area.
Life in the fast laneLet’s talk about speed. Performance with the twin 370-horsepower Volvo Penta IPS pod drives was exceptional. At wide-open throttle, I recorded a top speed of 29.6 knots with a fuel burn of 42 gallons per hour, and that was with a full load of eight people aboard. The best cruise speeds were between 20 and 23 knots, where fuel burn settled down to between 28 and 29 gph. That puts a lot of port towns within a weekend’s reach, which is one of the primary missions of this design.
Where you’ll really enjoy those pod drives is back at the dock. The marina where Monte Carlo had
plumb, hatchet-style bow. Viewed from the side, the MC4 reveals more “shippy” lines, replete with round,

the MC4 berthed happens to be close to my home, and it has a notorious reputation for being challenging when it comes to docking — mainly because of the somewhat narrow throughway that separates the facility’s two primary docks. Using the standard bow thruster and IPS joystick system, easing the MC4 stern-first into her slip was a breeze. It’s like that with almost every IPS-equipped boat I’ve ever run, but it always feels like magic — especially with a larger boat like the MC4.
Since it’s difficult to bask yourself in luxury when the engines are making a racket, I was extremely impressed and pleased to experience how quiet the Monte Carlo MC4 was underway. At top speed (almost 30 mph), I recorded only 65.6 decibels (dB) with my smartphone’s very unscientific decibel meter. That’s about 5 dB above a normal conversation level. Part of that quietness is attributable to the fact that Volvo’s IPS drives vent all of the engines’ exhaust gasses under the water; but I also have to tip my hat to Monte Carlo for the aforementioned sound-dampening job they did in the engine room. This was perhaps one of the quietest boats of this type I have ever tested.
Modern interiorThe interior on the MC4 may not inspire yacht traditionalists, but that’s not what the builder is shooting for. Instead of teak and holly cabin soles and dark teak or mahogany cabinetry with brass drawer pulls like more traditional motoryachts, the MC4 sports interior spaces that are accented throughout with an engineered wood product that looks like whitewashed oak, giving it a light, airy and contemporary feel.
You’ll find accents of hand-stitched leather at strategic locations throughout. Even many of the drawer pulls and cabinet handles are made of stitched leather.
As you enter the interior from the aft cockpit, you’ll find the galley situated in the main salon aft and to port, which is the norm on boats like this. That’s because it facilitates entertaining guests in the aft cockpit and up on the flybridge. Slide open and fold the glass doors at the aft end of the main salon and you’ve got yourself an open concept floor plan that flows right out into the aft cockpit.
A two-burner electric cooktop, convection microwave and refrigerator/freezer are standard. There’s a comfy C-shaped dinette aft to starboard with a two-part foldout table and plenty of stowage.
Forward of the dinette is the lower helm station, which has a cozy double bench versus a single captain’s chair. The upper portion of the dash is dominated by two, 12-inch Simrad multifunction displays, while the lower part has control switches, Volvo IPS control panels, twin tachometers, rudder indicator, bow thruster control, and trim tab control switches. The digital engine controls and
joystick are situated close by, just to starboard of the steering wheel.
Visibility from the helm is good both forward and aft. One of two electric opening windows is located just to starboard of the helm (the other is on the port side of the main salon), and it provides a great means for sticking your head out of the boat for a lookout when docking or maneuvering. These windows also provide a surprising amount of ventilation when opened, which is a good thing, primarily because of the lack of opening hatches in the main salon. I also really liked how quickly and smoothly these windows operated.
Let there be lightAt the forward port end of the main salon is a stairway leading down to a central landing that provides access to the boat’s two private staterooms. Look straight up from the landing and you can see right through the single-piece windshield, which acts almost as a skylight.
To the left of the landing, in the bow, is a stateroom with a large centerline berth flanked at its foot by plenty of stowage cabinetry and two hanging lockers. On both sides of the berth is a pair of opening ports set into the hull. These, along with a large opening hatch in the overhead, provide an amazing amount of light and ventilation. I also found a surprising amount of headroom. A fully enclosed, en suite head and shower are accessed through a private door.
Back out at the central landing, the main stateroom is accessed via a door to the right. Just inside the entry to the left is a huge en suite head/shower with tons of room and some of the nicest fixtures I’ve seen on a boat. Like many flybridge yachts of this size and design type, the master stateroom is situated directly under the main salon.
I did like the large inset hull lights down here, which give an open feeling to a space that would otherwise feel quite dark and cut off from the outside world. As with everywhere else on this boat, the finishes and upholstery are plush, rich and luxurious.
So… does the MC4 pass the luxury and performance test? You betcha. With nearly 30 mph of efficient top end, aggressive good looks, and exterior and interior spaces that rival many luxury resorts, the MC4 will get you there in fast and luxurious fashion. H

Function and funStarting in the aft cockpit, the comfortable port and starboard aft-facing seats can be folded up, as can the side benches, to provide a clean, open area for fishing. Even the pickiest sportfishing enthusiast will be pleased with the flush-to-the-deck port and starboard fish boxes with diaphragm pumps, 25-gallon aft bait well, and additional aft storage well for stowing docklines and other gear. Two flush-mount rod holders are on the transom; another four are further forward by the helm station.
Time to play? A removable ski-tow pylon can be mounted on the transom. A wave gate and fold-away stern seat easily moves to access the Flexiteek swim platform for swimming or diving. Add the stowable cockpit table, fold down the aft-facing seats, and mom and dad have the perfect spot for supervising the kids’ water sports.
Creature comforts and practicality coexist beneath the custom fiberglass, shade-bestowing hard top. The helm is designed so that engine controls and steering are within easy reach of the captain’s chair (nicely cushioned and with arm rests). The stainless steel handrails, mounted on the underside of the hard top, plus the sturdy windshield, looked reassuring, as it was a grey, blustery day on the harbor.
The CZone, a digital switching system that can remotely trigger a number of functions on board, is installed here. During Scout’s introduction of the prototype in 2013, the audience of journalists was told, “Similar features in cars are standard. Scout is leading the way to bring similar technology to boating.”
The helm provides cup holders and easily accessible smartphone storage pockets. It also houses speakers for the Fusion stereo, complete with iPod jack. LED rope lighting rings the cockpit deck.
This also is where you’ll find five tackle drawers, a fire extinguisher and toolkit in their own safety locker, as well as lockable storage areas for personal items on either side of the console.
For a 27-plus-foot boat, the amenities are remarkable. On the starboard side, aft of the captain’s chair, is a standard sink with cutting board. You even can add a grill here. On the port side, there’s a built-in, 152-quart cooler or storage compartment.
Thoughtful amenitiesWhile the guys make their own provisions for using the facilities, Scout paid close attention to family and friends coming aboard the 275 Dorado. Ladies: In the port console, there’s a completely private head compartment with locking door! Besides the porcelain head, it contains a vanity area with sink, storage and towel rack, as well as an opening porthole.
Not all these features come standard, but Scout offers plenty of options to personalize your vessel. In fact, Scout has a section on its website, SCOUTBOATS.COM, that lets you design your own boat. Play with the options to find your sweet spot for amenities and price.

I wasn’t able to take her out in the open waters of the harbor, but those that did said she accelerated smoothly on plane.
Downwind at cruise speed the ride was comfortable and dry, but she turned into the wind as our sea trial commenced. As expected, the helm seats stayed dry. Those sitting in aft-facing seats were easily able to converse with passengers at the helm. The boat rode choppy seas with her bow up, giving a comfortable ride. Having conducted sea trials with a number of Scout models previously, I wasn’t surprised.
I typically equate Scout Boats with saltwater fishing, but Mark Matson from Beacon Marine in Sister Bay, Wisconsin points out that the boat is equally well suited for the fresh water of the Great Lakes.

History of innovationScout Boats, located in Summerville, South Carolina, just celebrated its 25th anniversary. The family-owned and -operated company has stayed true to founder and president Steve Potts’ original concept of using designs that work. He started with 13- to 17-foot flats boats. He, along with his son, Stevie, stay committed to continually develop innovative construction methods that increase not only performance, but strength and safety.
Scout implemented some true innovations into many of its designs, including binding the hull to the deck through a reverse shoebox hull/deck design that prevents water seeping between the joints, thus increasing overall hull strength.
Another innovative achievement was to use composite stringers in boat construction, eliminating the use of wood, which always has the potential to rot.
The Scout Strata-Mount system for engines uses a factory-molded bracket that allows the two main longitudinal grid stringers to pass through the composite transom for integration into the engine
mount. The natural stresses of the engines are then spread out over the entire hull.

T he 258-foot Delphine launched in April 1921 at Great Lakes Engineering Works in River Rouge, Michigan, near Detroit. She was commissioned by
the Dodge family, American manufacturing royalty.Horace Dodge, the younger of the two brothers, loved boating and ordered his first
launch in 1904. He named Delphine after his only daughter and designed her unusual quadruple-expansion steam engine, but he never got to enjoy her. Dodge passed away in December 1920, just 11 months after his brother, John, died of pneumonia.
Delphine, however, went on to have quite a full life—or more than one, as the case may be. Initially she remained in the Dodge family, cruising the Great Lakes and occasionally making the voyage to the Atlantic via the Welland Canal and St. Lawrence River.
Her first life ended in 1926, when she caught fire in New York and sank. Anna Dodge, Horace’s widow, insisted on the yacht’s recovery and restoration.
The U.S. Navy acquired Delphine in 1942 and transformed her into USS Dauntless. Anna Dodge bought her back after the war and refitted her. She spent years docked at a private pier, with three crew aboard as caretakers.
The family donated her to the People to People Health Foundation in 1967, and one year later she became part of the Lundeberg Maryland Seamanship School as Dauntless. She served as a training ship for merchant seaman for two decades.
In 1989, Sea Sun Cruises purchased the yacht and intended to restore her in Singapore. She made her first and only Atlantic crossing, but never made it to Singapore; instead, she sat in Marseilles, France, unrestored, for four years.
A European businessman purchased her there in 1997, and based on his daughter’s extensive research, the yacht finally underwent a full restoration in Bruges, Belgium. The end result: The Great Lakes luxury yacht recaptured her former glory — with all the modern comforts and amenities necessary for the charter business. On September 9, 2003, Princess Stephanie of Monaco rechristened her Delphine, and she started yet another new life.
With Monaco as her home port, Delphine remains active as a charter yacht in the Mediterranean. She boasts 13 elegant guest suites, each with its own en-suite head, and her public spaces include a lounge, formal dining room, music lounge with two pianos, smoking room, Jacuzzi swim spa, massage bath, Turkish bath, sauna, fitness room, hair salon, and nearly 11,000 square feet of deck space.

It seems incredible, but every weekend hundreds of Lake Erie boaters drive right over people,
and often at full speed. They plow full-throttle over trucks, front-end loaders and all manner of construction equipment, too. And most have no idea they’re even doing it.
Sound fantastic? It is — and it’s testament to the fact that truth often is stranger than fiction. That’s because all the people and vehicles these boaters are running over are located hundreds of feet underground in salt mines that tunnel far beneath Lake Erie.
Understand, we’re not talking tiny tunnels here, but vast systems big enough to accommodate loaders, trucks and small trains. Four miles offshore from Cleveland, Ohio and 1,800 feet below Lake Erie, Cargill’s rock salt mine is a sunken city of tunnels, some measuring 20 feet high and 45 feet wide.
If you thought Great Salt Lake was in Utah, think again. Lake Erie may be fresh water, but it sits on an absolute sea of salt.
Once an oceanErie sits on a sea of salt because once upon a time, it was the sea. About 500 million years ago, the present-day Great Lakes basin was actually open ocean. When the Appalachian Mountains were formed, they trapped gazillions of gallons of seawater behind them, which subsequently dried up due to all the volcanic activity and left behind a vast bed of salt. In some places, the stuff runs 6,000 feet deep.
Subsequent layers of shale, limestone, sandstone, and dolomite buried the salt and form the present-day lakebed. These also provide a somewhat impervious cap that allows miners to extract the salt without worrying about moisture seeping into the mine.
Wanna buy some rock?It’s convenient that all this happened where it did, because the Great Lakes basin is the ideal place to mine rock salt. For starters, there’s a huge local demand for the stuff every winter, as cities and towns across the Midwest, Northeast and Canada pour it on roads to enhance driving safety.
Plus, mines on the Great Lakes enjoy easy access to three cheap forms of transportation: Ship, rail and trucks. So getting the salt to market couldn’t be easier.
Finally, there’s also a large, skilled labor force. For a salt miner, it’s a perfect storm for easy profits.
Or is it?As appealing as it all sounds, the process of actually extracting that salt and getting it to the surface is both complex and expensive.
Salt mines on the Great Lakes, like the massive Cargill mine in Cleveland, use a system called room-and-pillar to mine the salt. “Rooms” are created by the extraction of salt, and “pillars” are left standing for support. In a nutshell, miners drill into the salt and pump it full of an explosive called ammonium nitrate. They blast, and a front-end loader scoops up the bits and loads them into trucks that take the salt to an elevator for removal. Rooms measure about 30 feet wide by 40 feet long, and perhaps 15 or 16 feet high. Connecting roads measure up to 40 feet wide, while the remnant pillars are normally around 50 feet in diameter. Imagine a big, open room with a bunch of pillars holding up the ceiling, and you get the general idea.
Because it leaves about half of the available salt behind, the room-and-pillar technique is not the most profitable approach. But when you have 180 miles of water over your head, you have to make certain compromises.
When the Cleveland mine was built in 1961, it reached a depth of 1,800 feet. An elevator shuttled men and machinery down the mine’s shaft to a corridor, dubbed “Main Street,” or the main drag of the mine. The actual mining takes place further down Main Street, or off one of its tributary tunnels, as much as 4 miles offshore. Constant seismic testing protects miners from harm.
Safety concernsMines are inherently dangerous places to work. Mines located under water, however, face even greater challenges.

Alternatives to Rock SaltRock salt is legendary for its ability to melt ice and greatly improve winter driving conditions. But it also eats vehicles, harms vegetation, damages pavement, and kills fi sh when salt trucks drive over bridges spanning streams. Alternative de-icing products exist, but are expensive enough to be impractical for use on highways and city streets.
One promising alternative being tested comes from an unlikely source: Sugar beets. Researchers have discovered that a de-sugared byproduct created as sugar beets are processed

M and careful engineering, two rooms caved in. Within a year, water pouring in from overhead aquifers flooded the operation.
Cargill closed its Cleveland mine on August 19, 2013, after an anomaly known as a convergence was discovered in one of the tunnels off Main Street. In a nutshell, the distance between the mine shaft’s floor and its ceiling shrunk. Although the shift is measured in fractions of an inch, it’s the figurative canary in the coal mine, since it indicates that either the ceiling
is sinking or the floor is coming up. Engineers and scientists evaluated the situation, declared it stable, and the mine re-opened a week later.
Convergence monitors throughout the mine keep a close eye on ceiling and floor conditions, with the results monitored by both the company and state and federal regulators.
How long can it last?While there may be miles of salt under Lake Erie, every mining operation has its limit.
A salt mine opened off Detroit in 1906 closed up shop in 1985, after millions of tons of salt had been removed. With 53 years of operations under its belt, the Cleveland mine has many more years to go — some estimates suggest it could remain active for another 75 to 100 years.
Which is good for Lake Erie boaters. We can continue to enjoy driving over front-end loaders — and who doesn’t enjoy that? — for many more years to come. ★

With some fish populations dwindling in recent decades — the result of changing habitats and an influx of
invasive species — understanding what’s going on with Great Lakes fish has become increasingly important.
Now, thanks to a gliding robotic fish and a $1 million grant from the National Science Foundation, researchers will soon be able to track fish more efficiently and effectively than ever before.
Michigan State University’s College of Engineering is home to this “robofish,” which appropriately has been dubbed “Grace” for its ability to easily move through the water.
A hybrid of an underwater glider and a robotic fish, Grace combines energy efficiency with speed and maneuverability, making it an excellent vessel for collecting all kinds of data on water, fish and aquatic habitats.
Weighing in at 20 pounds, Grace is 90 centimeters (including her tail) and is designed to resemble a fish — though most fish don’t have the Spartan logo painted on their fins.
Grace has already proven its usefulness to researchers studying water quality in area lakes and rivers. Now it’s ready for a new challenge. Using the $1 million grant, its developers will collaborate with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to track fish in the Great Lakes.
HOW GRACE GOT ITS STARTGrace is the brainchild of Xiaobo Tan, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at Michigan State.
In spring 2005, Tan was teaching a graduate course on smart materials. Drew Kim, then assistant director of the College of Engineering Diversity Programs Office, took his course and assembled a team of undergrad and high school students that created a robotic fish prototype propelled with artificial muscles.
“It was the start of our attempt in this direction,” Tan says. “From that point on, we improved the robot a number of times, getting more and more serious about the applications for it.”
It has come a long way. In fact, Grace is considered the third-generation model. The first generation was a surface swimming robotic fish. “These robots couldn’t dive, but they could propel themselves,” Tan says.
They realized that energy efficiency and the ability to dive were the next steps in making the concept effective, so they made the second-generation robot an underwater glider.
“The glider exploits gravity and buoyancy to realize horizontal travel, which is enabled by the hydrodynamic lift force on the wings and body when the robot undergoes vertical movement in water,” Tan explains.
Then it was simply a matter of putting the two ideas together. Grace, finished in late 2012, does just that.
Throughout its development, Tan worked with experts from other fields to determine how the technology could be used and improved.
“It’s meant to be a platform,” Tan explains. “It can carry different sensors for different applications. We have a few projects with specific applications. We might be measuring oxygen, temperature, bacteria or chlorophyll.”
That’s where other experts come in. For example, in July 2013 and August 2014, Tan and Elena Litchman, an MSU professor and aquatic ecologist, along with their labs, used Grace to collect algae samples in Wintergreen Lake, which is located about 15 miles northeast of Kalamazoo.
“The first time was proof of concept; the second time was more quantitative, with much more autonomy built into the robot,” Tan says.

Understanding Acoustic TelemetryUsed to study fish migratory and population
patterns, acoustic telemetry is a two-part process
that involves transmitters and receivers.
Fish are implanted
with transmitters —
acoustic tags that
send “pings” into the
water. Receivers,
which are usually
anchored to the
bottom of lakes and
streams, “listen” for
tagged fish. When they hear one, they save that fish’s
unique tag with a time/date stamp.
This tracking can help scientists identify
important habitats, understand migratory patterns,
study the effect of invasive species on fish,
and much more — to help ensure survival and
sustainability for years to come.
The Great Lakes Acoustic Telemetry Observation
System (GLATOS) is designed to connect the
people using this technology.
“It brings researchers together so they can share
data across projects,” says Chuck Krueger, T.F. Waters
professor of Aquatic Ecology and Conservation at
Michigan State and director of GLATOS. “One of my
fish with an acoustic tag might swim by someone
else’s receiver. They could let me know.”
That means increased efficiency and knowledge
for these scientists. Projects associated with
GLATOS account for nearly 4,000 tagged fish,
more than 1,000 deployed receivers (though not
all are active year round), and nearly 52 million tag
detections that have been matched to tagged fish
over the last four years. — C.H.T.
in 20 spots in just a couple of hours. Routinely doing such an outing using human labor would be both time- and cost-prohibitive.
A fourth-generation model of the robotic glider (name still TBD) is projected to be ready by spring 2015. “It will be larger because we’re adding more components, more functions, more battery power,” Tan says. “It will be close to 30 pounds and 4 feet long, and should be large enough to go in the Great Lakes.”
Putting $1 million to useIn 2013, Tan’s work caught the eye of Chris Holbrook, a fishery biologist with USGS who uses a fish-tracking technology called acoustic telemetry (see sidebar).
“Chris said, ‘Hey, I wonder if one of these could carry an acoustic telemetry receiver?’” recalls Chuck Krueger, T.F. Waters professor of Aquatic Ecology and Conservation at Michigan State and director of the Great Lakes Acoustic Telemetry Observation System. Krueger works with Holbrook on several tracking projects.
The teams began collaborating, and the rest is history. With the $1 million grant, the Michigan State team has four years to build a “school” of these fish, which will include built-in receivers to detect the presence of fish implanted with acoustic-transmitting tags.
“We proposed building 10 in that time, but it’s really about building the first one correctly,” he says. “Once you do that, the other ones will follow fairly quickly.”
These robofish also will include solar panels to extend the battery life. “Time-wise, we hope to deploy them continually for at least two weeks at a time,” Tan says.
These new robofish, which will be similar in size to the fourth-generation model, will have a huge impact on the work Krueger and Holbrook are doing.
“Right now, 99 percent of our detection is done by passive receivers,” Krueger says. “We go out and anchor receivers on the bottom and they stay there all year. A fish has to swim by it for us to detect it.”
And while they’re able to gather useful information from this passive tracking, the robofish will make it a much more active process while expanding coverage at the same time.
“The Great Lakes are huge, huge bodies of water,” Krueger says. “We can cover so much more space with 10 robots that can move around. We’ll be able to do active searching patterns for the fish tags we have in the water in all the places where we don’t have receivers, which is most of the lake.
“A school of the robofish will communicate with each other, operating like a GPS network — or an actual school of fish.”
That means getting answers to questions they haven’t previously been able to address. “We have data now that shows that a large number of lake trout head up the North Channel of Lake Huron,” Krueger says. “We think they go up there to spend the summer and feed. I’d really like to get an active tracking program to test this hypothesis.”
By 2017, when the school of robofish should be completed, Krueger says they should be able to do just that. H

S All over the world, hidden gems await discovery, often camouflaged in
plain sight by their proximity to something larger and glitzier. And for
decades, so it was for Port Credit, Ontario — a quiet and peaceful community on
the north shore of Lake Ontario. While nearby Toronto stole the limelight, Port
Credit remained a private boating paradise enjoyed only by locals in the know.
Then came the salmon derby, and the secret was out. Now, little Port Credit is
far better known in some boating circles than its neighboring metropolis.

A destination made for boaters
Approaching Port Credit from the water, the first major landmark you’re going to encounter is the grounded 1905 freighter Ridgetown, which forms a breakwater on the harbor’s south side. Just behind it lies Port Credit Harbour Marina — not only the largest marine facility in Port Credit, but the biggest marina on Lake Ontario, with more than 800 slips. It’s also deep, with at least 18 feet of water at almost all of the slips.
The entry channel to the marina lies between Ridgetown’s bow (with its quick, flashing red light), and a shoreline pier with an extended stone breakwater (capped with a flashing green light and a green day beacon). There’s also a flashing light marking the freighter’s stern, but it’s not possible to enter the harbor from that end.
As you approach from the lake, you’ll also see the flashing white light from a replica lighthouse on the west bank of the Credit River, located a short distance upstream from Ridgetown. While this light — visible up to 12 miles offshore — might help you spot Port Credit in poor visibility conditions, it does not mark the harbor entrance and should not be followed. Rather, as you pass Ridgetown’s bow into port, you can either turn east into Port Credit Harbour Marina, or take the buoyed channel that closely follows the curved cement pier extending from the east shore to reach the main harbor. The channel here is not terribly wide, and you’ll want to stay in it in order to avoid hanging up on multiple sandbars located all along the western side of the river. Happily, both the entrance channel and harbor basin are dredged regularly, so you’ll normally find depths of about 10 feet in summer, dropping to roughly 7 feet by early fall.
Credit Village Marina, located on the east bank of the Credit River just beyond the base of the pier, offers primarily transient docking with 63 slips that can be rented by the hour, day or week. The simplest way to reserve a slip is to call ahead on VHF 68, or just pull into any empty slip on arrival. The marina can accommodate boats up to 60 feet
long at its 30- to 40-foot-long floating docks. Right next door, the privately owned Snug Harbour Seafood Bar and Grill offers additional short-term docking options.
For trailer boaters, excellent public launch ramps are located on the west bank of the river, directly opposite Credit Village Marina. That’s also where you’ll find several charter fishing boats, a fish cleaning station, and the weigh scales for the annual summer salmon derby.
The Ridgetown
The grounded lake freighter Ridgetown that forms Port Credit’s
breakwall is one of the oldest surviving lakers in existence.
Built by the Chicago Shipbuilding Co. at a cost of $475,000, the
vessel was launched June 24, 1905 as the William E. Corey, the fi rst
fl agship for the Cleveland-
based Pittsburgh Steamship
Co. On November 28 that
year, the ship grounded on
Gull Island Reef in western
Lake Superior’s Apostle
Islands during an intense
November storm that
wrecked 30 other ships and killed 78 mariners. After taking a terrible
beating from three days of 80-mph winds, the Corey was pulled free
of the rocks following a $100,000 salvage eff ort that involved no less
than 158 men, four ships and two tugs. Thankfully, that proved the only
serious incident in its long career.
In 1960, the vessel was sold to Upper Lakes Shipping in Toronto and renamed
Ridgetown. It served its new owners for 10 more years before being sunk at
Nanticoke in 1970 as a temporary breakwall during construction of the power
generating plant there. Following completion of the hydro station, Ridgetown
was refl oated, loaded with stone, moved to Port Credit, and sunk again on June
21, 1974 as a permanent breakwater. It has since become an iconic fi xture, much
loved by local boaters. — C.R.

Ontario’s salmon capital
Ontario’s self-proclaimed salmon capital, Port Credit is a hub of activity from June through September. Most of this activity is focused around the Great Ontario Salmon Derby, a six-week extravaganza that can trace its roots back to the early 1970s. When the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources first introduced Coho salmon to Lake Ontario in 1968, anglers had no idea how to catch them, and the derby was created as a vehicle to help develop a viable sport fishery. It worked like magic; limit catches soon became commonplace, and within a few years, a new world record Coho was caught in Lake Ontario — much to the chagrin of anglers on the Pacific coast.
Today, trophy Chinook (or king) salmon make up the bulk of the catch, and the rule of thumb is that you’ll need at least a 30-pounder in order to win any of the derby prizes (which include trucks, boats and fishing vacations). Anglers here also tangle with trophy rainbow trout and brown trout that frequently nudge — or top — the 20-pound mark. The Credit River hosts one of the largest populations of wild rainbow trout on the Great Lakes, and these hard-fighting fish form a major pillar of the summer boat fishery.
Festivals galore
If fishing isn’t quite your cup of tea, then you’ll be pleased to learn that Port Credit has much more to offer, including a full calendar of festivals and events.
Visit in early May and you’ll be right in time for the annual
Mississauga Marathon, which runs straight through Port Credit — figuratively and literally. One of Canada’s premiere road races and a major qualifying event for the Boston Marathon, the Mississauga Marathon usually attracts in excess of 25,000 runners, who compete in a variety of races over the weekend — all of which pass through the harbor close to the finish line, and boaters turn out in numbers to cheer the runners on.
This portion of the marathon route follows what is locally known as the Waterfront Trail, which offers miles of continuous walking, cycling and in-line skating along the Lake Ontario shoreline. It’s part of the larger Waterfront Trail System that extends from Niagara-on-the-Lake to the Quebec border.
If you’d rather pack calories on than burn them off, a short walk east of the harbor along Lakeshore Road will take you to the Port Credit Farmer’s Market, held on Saturday mornings from June 6-October 10. Apart from being a great place to restock the galley with a variety of fresh produce, cheese, pastries and meats, the market offers live music and a great excuse for a stroll through town.
Should you find yourself in Port Credit in mid-June, you’ll be right on time for the Mississauga Waterfront Festival (2015 dates are June 12-14). This fun family weekend offers a number of free concerts, cook-offs, games, arts and crafts, laser shows, and even a petting zoo for the kids. The Waterfront Festival has been a Port Credit institution since 1998, attracting more than 50,000 people every summer. Best of all, each year the organizers donate a big chunk of the proceeds in support of local charities.

On Canada Day each year (July 1), Port Credit celebrates with its Paint The Town Red celebration, including a parade and fireworks display. All through July and into the first weekend in August, the Sunset Concert Series presents live music by the water at Port Credit Memorial Park on Sunday evenings from 6:30 p.m. until sunset.
Credit Village Marina hosts an annual art show in mid-July, while the annual Port Credit Busker Fest — celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2015 — is scheduled for August 21-23. Perhaps one of the most unique summer festivals anywhere on the Great Lakes, with jugglers, sword swallowers and every imaginable type of street entertainment, the three-day Busker Fest presents more than 40 professional buskers, four spectacular fire shows, and an “Xtreme Finale” held on the final day, with every busker performing simultaneously in one, big show. It’s all free, but the performers appreciate any tips they receive.
Should you find yourself in port from September 11-13, you’ll be well entertained, as the South Side Shuffle Blues and Jazz Festival presents live acts on the streets, in clubs and on the main stage in Port Credit’s Memorial Park, just steps from the marina.
Shop and dine
If you like to shop, you’ll find a wide variety of interesting stores in town, mainly located along Lakeshore Road within a few blocks of the harbor. Forget big box retail — this is where you find charming small boutiques with truly unique offerings.
If you’re shopping for a new boat, the marina building at Port Credit Harbour Marina houses numerous yacht brokers and boat dealers, while two boat shows — the Spring Boat Show, held from May 29-31, and the Port Credit In-Water Boat Show, held from September 18-20 — present a wide range of new and brokerage boats, plus a vast range of accessories right in the harbor.
The other great shopping in Port Credit is of the culinary kind. If you like to eat, you’ve definitely come to the right place, as Port Credit offers a wide selection of restaurants within easy walking distance of the harbor, from fast food to pub grub to fine dining and chic wine bars. As locals like to say, just take a walk along Lakeshore Road and follow your nose until you find what you like.
The wide range of dining options simply reflects Port Credit’s multi-faceted personality. Sometimes elegant, sometimes quirky, but always a great time.

Moes Marine ServiceFull-service wooden boat repair and new MJM dealer has deep ties in Vermilion.
Ninety-seven years ago, a young Vermilion, Ohio farmer named Frank Moes invested in a waterfront lot on the
river. This property would one day be handed down through three Moes generations and serve as the premier Vermilion wooden boat repair shop, Moes Marine Service, and the newest Great Lakes dealer for MJM Yachts.
While Frank owned the property since 1917, it wasn’t until 1938 that he and his son, Julius “Mike” Moes, founded Moes Marine Service and began working on wooden boats. Originally, Moes Marine serviced Vermilions’ fishing fleet, and while fiberglass boats soon became all the rage, Moes maintained focus on its craft of wooden boat repair. Today, they specialize in repair, restoration and refit of wooden boats, but also are a full-service shop for all types of boats.
“The core business has always been repair and restoration of wooden boats, but in doing that we’ve developed a high level of customer service and attention to detail,” says Mike Moes, third generation president of Moes Marine Service and MJM Yachts Vermilion.
Located between Cleveland and Toledo on the south shore of Lake Erie, about a quarter-mile to the mouth of the Vermilion River, the family-owned and -operated marina offers services that include a 20-ton marine hoist, 5-ton lift, 16-slip marina for summer dockage, indoor storage for boats up to 26 feet, outdoor storage for boats up to 50 feet, electrical installation and repair, and, most recently, the addition of MJM Yachts.
Moes Marine Service is the Great Lakes’ only MJM Yachts dealer, servicing Lake Erie, Lake St. Clair and Metro Detroit. Moes, along with Vermilion native Lee C. Howley, will operate MJM Yachts Vermilion out of the Moes Marine Service offices.

Sailors Rescued off Galveston Jetties Houston, Texas — October 13, 2014A sailboat with two passengers aboard became lodged on the Galveston Jetties around 6:05 a.m. The two men called U.S. Coast Guard Station Houston/Galveston and reported they had run aground at the tip of the south jetty.
At 6:45 a.m., Station Galveston boat crews arrived on scene, but were unable to rescue the men off the rocks.
An Air Station Houston helicopter crew was then deployed. The two male passengers were hoisted off the rocks and delivered to an awaiting EMS crew. One of the men was treated for minor injuries. The sailboat drifted off the rocks and began sinking.
Weather conditions included 6-foot seas and 30-knot winds. “The men donned life jackets, stayed with their boat,
and reached out for help early,” says Lt. Erin Gill, a pilot aboard the rescue helicopter.

67-Foot Yacht Sinks, Two Rescued Seattle, Washington — October 17, 2014Two passengers abroad a 67-foot recreational vessel, Lady A, were rescued from their boat after it began taking on water north of Dungeness Spit. U.S. Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound in Seattle received a distress call from the passengers around 7:31 a.m., reporting that they were abandoning ship into the life raft.
A response boat from USCG Station Port Angeles arrived on scene and found the man and woman still on the boat. The two were rescued and did not require medical attention.
Lady A sank in 180 feet of water with an estimated 700 gallons of diesel gas. There was no report of a spill.

Missing Sailor RescuedCorpus Christi, Texas — October 19, 2014At approximately 4 p.m., U.S. Coast Guard Station Port Aransas received a call from a woman saying her boyfriend had jumped off their sailboat to retrieve the boat’s front bow hatch cover that had fallen into the water. She was unsure of the boat’s exact location in the bay.
USCG Sector Corpus Christi sent a response boat crew from Station Port Aransas and an aircrew from Sector Corpus Christi. The rescue helicopter and response boat quickly located the sailboat, helped it safely anchor, and brought the woman onto the response boat. Response teams then began
searching Corpus Christi Bay for the missing man. At 6:15 p.m., a crewmember located the man clinging to the hatch cover and rescued him from the water with no injuries.
“It’s never a good idea to jump overboard from your boat, especially since both boaters were not wearing life jackets,” says Petty Officer Chad Eakin, the coxswain of the response boat. “Had he been wearing a life jacket, the search would have been much shorter. We are extremely happy to be able help these two boaters and bring them to safety.”

Man Rescued from Bubble in Atlantic OceanSt. Augustine, Florida — October 7, 2014Coast Guard Cutter Bernard C. Webber arrived on scene 70 miles east of St. Augustine after receiving a distress call from a man inside a hydro pod bubble.
The man inside the human-powered bubble was reportedly a long-distance runner on a voyage to Bermuda across the Atlantic. He told the USCG 7th District command center that he was disoriented and asked for directions to Bermuda.
Cutter Webber arrived on scene to tell him that his voyage was dangerous and requested he terminate his trip due to lack of supplies on board. The man refused to leave his bubble.
The waterstanders continued to monitor his movements until he activated his Personal Locating Beacon a few days later after becoming exhausted. USCG airplane and helicopter crews, along with a rescue swimmer, hoisted the man from his inflatable bubble into the helicopter. There were no reported injuries.

Man Rescued from Burning Sailboat in ChesapeakePortsmouth, Virginia — October 21, 2014John Lee Brown Jr. was rescued from his 33-foot sailboat after it caught fire 5 miles west of Windmill point in Chesapeake Bay.
Watchstanders at U.S. Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads received a call from Brown at about 10:40 a.m. saying his boat was on fire. Watchstanders were unable to maintain communication with Brown after the initial broadcast.
A good Samaritan contacted USCG and reported that they had the burning sailboat in sight and rescued Brown off his boat. The USCG response boat arrived on scene at 11 a.m. and safely transferred Brown to Station Milford Haven.
