This edition reviews the year 2013: some changes and also much activity. One of the department’ first official activities of 2013 was to go the mall (!) – not for shopping but to take part in Lakehead’s Research and Innovation Week display at Intercity Mall on a Saturday. We had a fantastic poster on display to synopsize some of our research activities, while faculty and students were available all day to discuss sociology and answer questions. After a long career at Lakehead, we said a fond farewell to Dr. Bruce Minore who retired at the end of June. We wish him a great retirement! Meanwhile, we were fortunate to be able to keep the popular Dr. Dalibor Mišina for a third year. He has proven to be a great asset to our programs and department in general. This year, he is taking over a lot of the teaching that Dr. Tony Puddephatt usually does in social theory, as Tony began a well‐deserved sabbatical year in July 2013. At our Orillia campus, we have welcomed two new contract lecturers: Andrea Quinlan and Michelle Gilbert. They join Dr. Kevin Willison, who has been teaching as a contract lecturer in Sociology for many years (and who, by the way, was the first to teach Sociology in Orillia), Dr. Paul Carr, our full‐time appointment in Orillia, and Dr. Curtis Fogel, who is the head of Criminology and adjunct in Sociology. We are delighted to see the continued growth of interest in Sociology at the Orillia campus, and look forward to even further expansion. In September we took in a healthy cohort of 11 new graduate students (see inside for more about our students), and at Fall Preview Day in November, we introduced approximately 60 potential new students to the discipline and what to expect. More news about faculty, students, events, research and other activities can be found inside this issue. Sharon‐Dale Stone Chair
