S3 Options

Since the beginning of First Year, pupils have been taking a very broad range of subjects. They now have the opportunity to study a smaller number of subjects in greater depth, which will reflect their interests and career aspirations. These courses will lead to pupils achieving National Qualifications in S4. Pupils should endeavour to maximise attainment by selecting subjects which offer them the highest level of National Qualification.

Core Subjects

All pupils will take certain core subjects in S4. They will study National Qualifications in English and Mathematics. In addition, they will study Religious Education and Physical Education, which do not lead to National Qualifications. They will also take a Personal and Social Education and Wider Achievement courses in S4.

Three Option Choices

In addition to the four core subjects, all pupils will select a further three National Qualification courses. The option form has been designed to ensure that pupils have a high level of choice and pupils should try to maintain a broad and balanced curriculum across all the main curricular areas.

Options process

The school will provide every learner with a clear and structured personalisation and choice programme. Prior to your son/daughter making their final options choices they will undertake a practice run to allow for options form construction which will allow maximum choice for all.Learners will have a support interview with their Key Adult post-Christmas and they will come home with an option form completed. This will be based on discussions with learners and their teacher’s recommendations. If there are any areas where you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact the Principal Teacher of Pupil Support.

What happens if a subject is oversubscribed?

In each case, pupils will be asked to select another subject. Normally this will be the reserve choice which they entered in their Options form. If this is not available, they would choose another subject where spaces are available. We will do our very best to ensure pupils are asked to choose a reserve or alternative subject only once.

We also do our best to use timetabling techniques to make choices available. This will depend on the availability of staff and accommodation.

We will also consult departments for their recommendations.

If the departmental recommendations do not resolve the situation, pupils’ names will be drawn by lot, but only as a last resort.

Making the Correct Choices

This is a crucial stage in each pupil’s school career when it is important that they make informed decisions about the subjects they will study in the Senior Phase. How can you support them through this process?

If pupils have a career in mind, they should investigate the subjects which may be necessary for entry into that career or course at college or university. They can obtain advice from our careers adviser, Stuart Bauld at the careers clinics held at lunchtime on Wednesdays. They can also access the Skills Development Scotland website:

www.myworldofwork.co.uk and www.planit plus.net

Their Principal Teacher of Pupil Support or any member of the Senior Management Team will also be happy to provide guidance.

Study the description of each subject in this brochure. You can also ask the subject teachers for advice at the Options Meeting.

How Parents/Carers can Help

Talk with your son or daughter about how they are getting on in school – what they like or dislike, and how they feel about their subjects.

S3 Options Booklet 2017-2018

Talk about the options and encourage them to start thinking about what they might like to do in the future.

Generally it’s a good idea to encourage them to keep their options as open as possible. They may already have some ideas about what they want to do in the future, but these could change. And, for many young people it’s still too early to have specific career ideas or interests.

Encourage them to avoid biased views about what subjects or careers are ‘suitable’ for girls or boys.

If there are any family members, neighbours or friends that have careers that may be of interest to your child, encourage them to ask questions of them, their careers or if there is an opportunity for some work experience or visit to their workplace.

Talk to their subject teachers, Pupil Support PT and/or careers adviser if you need more information or you have any worries about their subject choice.

Encourage them to ask for help and advice in school if they feel they need it.

The world of work is probably very different now to when you were at school. Beware of steering your child into a particular career pathway based on ‘how it used to be.’

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS1. Can I change courses in S4 if I find I don’t like my first choice?

As a general rule it will not be possible after the first few weeks of the course, and even then there may not be any places available in other subjects. You are making a choice for the next year and you must therefore think very carefully about it.

2. Should I choose a subject because my friends are choosing it?

Surely you and your friends disagree about what film to go and see, which team is best and who should win the X-Factor. So why would you all agree to do the same school subjects? Following the crowd isn’t always the best option. Work out your own plans and stick to them

3. Should I choose a subject because I like the teacher?

It is always going to be down to you in the end to put the work in and get the results although teachers are there to support you. But what happens if the teacher moves away or you change schools? Teachers can be great at making you feel enthusiastic and interested in a subject, but remember there is no guarantee that you will get the same teacher next year, so in the long run the motivation has to come from you.

4. Should I choose/not choose a subject because it is seen to be a girl’s subject or a boy’s subject?

St Mungo’s AcademyBring Out the Best

Page 6: February 2012 - St Mungo’s Web viewNational 4 Chemistry: ... The final exam is 120marks ... choice in assignments at National 4, National 5 and Higher with question papers also providing

S3 Options Booklet 2017-2018

There is no such thing as girls’ subjects or boys’ subjects: this is the age of equal opportunities; there is nothing you can’t do if you have the right skills and

interests. The only barriers to the subjects you can study are the ones you put up yourself.

5. Should I choose a subject because I need it for the job I want to do?

This is a sensible and valid reason for choosing a subject. However, do remember that you need not have a firm career in mind at the moment, only that you should be picking from a range of subjects which will maximise your options for the future. No matter how sure you feel at the moment about your future career, you should have alternatives in mind. You could change your mind completely and find out that you don’t have the spread of subjects for other things which now interest you.

6. Should I choose a subject because the teacher says I should take it?

Subject teachers can give you good advice because they know you and know your ability and approach to subjects. Your pupil support teacher knows about you as a person too so can help with decisions. However, you should be doing your own research.

7. Should I choose a subject because I’m good at it?

Ability in a subject is a definite plus. However, you also have to think about the usefulness of the subject to you long term: be careful about narrowing your options too much and becoming too specialized. If you are lucky enough to be good at a lot of subjects, you may be able to leave some out because you can’t fit them all in, so other aspects like your possible careers ideas, have to be taken into account.

8. Should I choose a subject because my parents/carers want me to do it?

Your parent’s/carer’s support is really important because they know you and your interests well. You should explore your ideas together using PlanitPlus, advice from subject and pupil support teachers.

9. Will my Pupil Support Teacher help me?

Your Pupil Support Teacher will discuss your choice with you at an interview arranged for this purpose in the next few weeks. Your parents are most welcome to participate in this interview if available.

Remember, our aim is to provide you with all the help and support you need to make the choice which suits you best.

Why study English and Literacy?

Courses

Assessment of Courses

St Mungo’s AcademyBring Out the Best

A qualification in English is an essential requirement of most career pathways. In addition, most college courses require entrants to have studied English to at least National 4 or 5 levels, with many university courses requiring a pass at Higher English. The four Basic English and Literacy skills – Reading, Writing, Talking and Listening - are key elements in the English and Literacy courses you will study. Literacy is vital developing you not just educationally, but emotionally and socially too. It supports you in every subject you will study and opens up opportunities in all aspects of your life. The study of English and Literacy will develop in you the four capacities of Curriculum for Excellence – it will help you to become a Successful Learner, a Confident Individual, a Responsible Citizen and an Effective Contributor.

The New Qualifications in English offer increased flexibility, provide more time for learning, and greater opportunities for personal choice. The courses are designed to meet the needs of all learners in progressing from prior levels of achievement in their Broad General Education. National 3 is broadly equivalent to the outgoing Access 3 or Standard Grade Foundation courses; National 4 is broadly equivalent to the outgoing Standard Grade General or Intermediate 1 courses; National 5 is broadly equivalent to the outgoing Standard grade Credit or Intermediate 2 courses. All NQ and Higher courses will comprise of a purposeful, engaging structure of units and coursework

National 3 and 4 courses will be assessed internally by teachers through coursework. For these courses, there will be no external examination or assessment. Class teachers will assess pupil work using SQA guidelines and Quality Assurance to ensure maintenance of national standards. Units are simply judged as Pass or Fail. National 5 and Higher courses are also assessed by teachers through coursework and units are also judged as Pass or Fail. However, there is an external SQA assessment (exam) which will be graded A – D. This examination will require students to apply skills, knowledge and understanding in less familiar contexts and demonstrate Higher Order Thinking Skills.

The New Qualifications courses were designed to ensure that students have clear paths of progression. For example, a student who has achieved National 4 may choose to progress to National 5, while a student who has succeeded at National 5 may choose to progress to Higher.

Homework is a crucial part of all the courses. It helps to reinforce what is learnt in the classroom and all homework issued in English will be purposeful. To be successful in English and Literacy, it is essential that pupils are engaged in personal reading on a regular basis. In addition, written work may have to be prepared at home and students may also have to complete tasks that were begun in class. It might involve the completion of language resources or worksheets. At certain points of the year, students will be required to carry out research projects at home in order to prepare for Solo Talks, or to obtain evidence and statistics for Discursive Writing. Students may also be required to work on the Added Value Unit outside of school.

There is no special equipment required in order to complete the English courses we offer. Students are, however, expected to treat all novels and text books with care and to arrive at class fully prepared.

As with many subjects, it would be helpful for students to have access at home to a computer and the internet, a dictionary and thesaurus.

Why Study Physical Education?

Courses

St Mungo’s AcademyBring Out the Best

Physical Education involves pupils in a range of learning experiences contributing to their intellectual, physical, social and moral development. St Mungo’s Academy is delighted to provide every young person with the opportunity to enjoy 2 periods of core P.E. every week.

This provides learners with the opportunity to develop:

The practical skills necessary for improved physical performance. The knowledge of how to maximise participation to sustain an active, enjoyable and healthy

lifestyle, within school and throughout their daily lives.

The leisure industry will always be an important part of everyday life. It is important that all our students leave school with the skills, knowledge and confidence to maintain a healthy lifestyle out with school.

Pupils who enjoy regular Physical activity could fit easily into the market place whether it be in further education or directly into the working environment, having developed the ability to problem solve, team build and work as part of a team whilst improving their interpersonal skills of self-confidence, self-esteem, self-reliance and determination.

Courses will be provided as much as possible within an options programme in order to provide both personalisation and choice for students.

This will include both indoor and outdoor individual and team activities. Activities offered will be dependent on staffing and timetabling issues, but options will include: Badminton, Basketball, Dance, Fitness, Football, Futsal, Gymnastics, Hockey, Table Tennis and Volleyball. It may also be possible to utilise other Glasgow facilities to enhance the activities on offer, such as The National Indoor Arena and Glasgow Life, Crownpoint.

All activities will be practical in nature and will include the opportunity to develop knowledge of rules and officiating as well as encouraging leadership, sportsmanship and the ability to evaluate and improve performance.

Why study RE?

S4 Term 1 Abortion Euthanasia

Term 2 Holocaust Memorial Week Catholic Education Week Committed in Love (Called to Love)

Term 3 Catholic Christianity

Religion has long been a source of inspiration and influences everything from politics to literature, history to architecture and art to economics. Religious education therefore plays a vital role in making sense of the things that continue to shape our world. However there is another much more important reason:

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations… teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you”

(Matthew 28: 20).

RE in Catholic schools such as St Mungo’s Academy is distinctive because of its focus on the faith development of our young people within the context of a faith community. The central purpose of RE therefore is to assist learners to make an informed, mature response to God’s call to relationship.

RE is designed to engage learners in an educational process which I will:

Assist them in developing their knowledge and understanding of the Catholic Faith. Develop their skills of reflection, discernment and critical thinking. Help them to make good moral choices based on an informed conscience. Exemplify and foster the beliefs, practices and values on which St Mungo’s Academy is founded. Increase their awareness and understanding of other Christian traditions, as well as Other World

Religions (Judaism and Islam)

A variety of assessment techniques are employed to monitor progress and track attainment. Teachers of RE will look for the use of evidence, reasoned argument and informed insight when pupils express and evaluate different viewpoints. In RE, pupils will be given a number of choices on how they wish to be assessed; for example during the Pro Life topic, pupils may wish to write a final essay or poem or instead create a piece of art to express their beliefs or opinions on particular moral issues.

In the Senior Phase, our young people will continue to study two periods of RE every week. They will continue to develop the skills for learning, life and work introduced in previous years. The learning that takes place in class will be further developed by opportunities outside of the classroom. These include, opportunities to participate in the sacrament of reconciliation, the celebration of Mass and other prayer services guided by the liturgical year as well as a programme of retreats and involvement in a Servant Leadership Course. In S6 all pupils will have the opportunity to participate in The Pope Benedict XVI Caritas Award.

Home is an integral part of the learning process. Pupils will be expected to reflect on issues in their own time and to research and investigate different topics at home or away from the classroom.

Pupils are expected to come to class with a pen or pencil and school diary. All text books will be supplied. There are often opportunities in class for pupils to handle artefacts and religious texts such as bibles. It is imperative that these are handled respectfully and with care.

If you’re interested in designing, developing and playing computer games, then this is an ideal option. We deliver two / three national qualification units which specifically looks at aspects of designing and developing computer games.

The aim of Computer Games Development is to gain an understanding of processes involved in the final stages of computer game development. Candidates will learn how to use their chosen game development environment to assemble all the elements and produce a working game. Candidates will acquire an understanding of the evaluation process and then plan and deliver activities to promote a computer game.

Computer Games Development is offered as a series of national qualification units. There are 40 hours allocated for each unit at SCQF levels 4, 5 and 6.

There are three component parts of each Computer Games Development unit;

Evaluate an existing computer game, highlighting strengths and weaknesses of computer games. Score how well you think a computer games plays in terms of the overall experience of the gamer.

Create a computer game using games design software and plan characters, story boards and a theme for a computer game. Types of computer games are researched – free roam, shoot ‘em up, platform, sports, simulation games are all types of games to experience.

Promote a computer game that you have designed using trade literature, desktop publishing, on-line promotion and advertising.

Why Study a Modern Foreign Language?

Why Study French?

St Mungo’s AcademyBring Out the Best

By speaking a language other than English, the world opens up to you. You have an asset for life! Foreign language skills make our learners more employable and provide them with increased opportunities to work in today’s global market place. Languages also help us build friendships with people across the globe, and understand and experience different cultures in a way that enriches our own lives, too. They open up travel opportunities, the chance to study or live abroad and, ultimately, allow us to experience things that speaking English alone we simply wouldn’t be capable of.

It has been proven by a substantial body of research that the benefits of learning a language include:

Better understanding of different cultures Improved self confidence Enhanced ability to build new relationships Improved literacy and reading skills Enhanced problem solving, interpersonal and communication skills Deeper understanding of English Increased employability

French is one of the key international languages and studying French opens up the rich and varied world of one of Europe’s most renowned cultures. From literature to the cinema, from food to fashion, from engineering to science, the influence of France extends across the whole globe.

More tourists (75 million) visit France than any other country in the world. French is the only language other than English spoken on five continents. French and English are the only two global languages. French will give you the numerous choices later on in your studies or your career. French, along with English, is the official working language of:

The United Nations UNESCO NATO The International Olympic Committee The 31-member Council of Europe The European Community The International Red Cross

Why Study Geography?

#

Courses

St Mungo’s AcademyBring Out the Best

Geography opens up for learners the physical environment around them and the ways in which people interact with this environment.

The purpose of Geography is to develop the learner’s understanding of our changing world and its human and physical processes. Opportunities for practical activities, including fieldwork, will be encouraged, so that learners can interact with their environment.

The contexts for study are local, national, international and global. Geography draws upon the social and natural sciences: interdisciplinary learning is therefore fundamental to geographical study and encourages links with other disciplines.

In the 21st century, with growing awareness of the impact of human activity upon the environment and scarce resources, the study of Geography fosters positive lifelong attitudes of environmental stewardship, sustainability and global citizenship.

The main aims of Geography are to enable learners to:

Appreciate the ways in which people and the environment interact in response to physical and human processes at local, national, and global scales.

Be aware of spatial relationships and develop an understanding of the changing world in a balanced, critical and sympathetic way.

Acquire a geographical perspective on environmental and social issues. Develop an interest in, and concern for, the environment leading to sustainable development.

Geography will help create informed and active citizens by helping learners develop a greater understanding of the human and physical processes which have an impact on their environment. Learners will develop skills which are transferable to other areas of study and which they will use in everyday life.

Subject will be offered at the following levels: National 3, National 4 and National 5. National 4 and National 5 Courses will be 160 hours.

St Mungo’s AcademyBring Out the Best

History is an interesting subject which opens up the world of the past for learners but also enlightens the present.

The purpose of History is to provide learners with an insight into their own lives and the society in which they live. By examining the past, they discover their heritage as members of a community, a country and a wider world.

History uniquely provides opportunities for learners to study past societies, the changes they have undergone, and the ways in which they have embraced or sometimes resisted change. Through such studies, History provides learners with both a perspective on, and an understanding of, the forces which have shaped their own society and societies in other countries.

The course involves the study of three units – Scottish, British, European and World contexts – in a variety of time periods.

Why Study Modern Foreign Languages?

Why Study Italian?

St Mungo’s AcademyBring Out the Best

By speaking a language other than English, the world opens up to you. You have an asset for life! Foreign Language skills make our learners more employable and provide them with increased opportunities to work in today’s global market place. Languages also help us build friendships with people across the globe, and understand and experience different cultures in a way that enriches our own lives, too. They open up to travel opportunities, the chance to study or live abroad and, ultimately, allow us to experience things that speaking English alone we simply wouldn’t be capable of.

The study of Italian Language and Culture explores the achievements of one of the world’s greatest civilisations. Italy is famous, among other things, for art and architecture, engineers, scientists and poets, for its films, fashion houses, footballers and food. As a student of Italian you will develop an ability to communicate through both written and spoken language, have the stimulating challenge of engaging with another culture through the medium of its language, and the possibility of an educational excursion to Italy during your course.

We place an emphasis on high-level professional and transferable skills, such as making presentations, writing reports, interpreting and translating, all of which will help to prepare students for a wide range of future careers.

St Mungo’s AcademyBring Out the Best

Learners are expected to take a care of any textbooks issued to them and come to class fully prepared.

There is no requirement for pupils to purchase their own musical instrument to practice at home although parents who wish to do so may contact either their child’s instrumental instructor or classroom teacher who will then be able to advise them on the make, cost and suppliers.

For those who wish to follow a career path in Music the opportunities to develop skills which will help them achieve this can be found throughout our curriculum and extra – curricular programme. We prepare pupils who wish to go on to study Music Performance in further education establishments such as STOW College, University of Glasgow and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland by providing a significant number of pupils with free specialist instrumental tuition. Currently we have instructors for Violin, Viola, Cello, Woodwind, Brass, Guitar, Voice, Drum Kit and Tuned Percussion.
