Innovation Paying OffA LOVE STORY BLOSSOMED INTO A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS PARTNERSHIP

As in many towns and cities across America, construction has been the heart and soul of most local economies. In fact the housing boom that is credited with pulling America out of the great depression had

continued to be a main stay in this country up until 2008. Just newly hired in 2005 by Mountain View Construction, Sean Gavin moved to Sandpoint to start his new venture in life. The following year, when construction was still booming Gavin was offered a partnership in the company and by 2007 Gavin had purchased Mountain View Construction altogether.

Meanwhile Jamie (Nelsen) Gavin was also making her way in the construction industry. Growing up working with her father in his Nelsen Building Supply, Jamie was hooked at an early age. She ended up at Sandpoint Building Supply and Selkirk Glass and Cabinets in 2002 where she would meet Sean for the first time. Eventually Jamie went to work for Mountain View Construction and soon thereafter, Sean and Jamie were exchanging vows on top of Schweitzer Mountain.

With the economic boom coming to an end and taking a turn for the worse, it was time to get innovative. Sean and Jamie decided to add Fire, Water, Wind and Mold restoration to theservices offered by Mountain View Construction. With the brilliant idea of Disaster Masters, they diversified enough to survive in a time when many others could not. As for their future, “we feel that we have weathered the worst of the storm” says Jamie. The couple runs a smooth business while being active with the community as members of the Rotary Club of Ponderay and the Panhandle Building Contractors Association. Mountain View and Disaster Masters are also

both members of the Greater Sandpoint Area Chamber of Commerce. Their phones have been ringing off the hook for new homes and other projects. They currently have both Mountain View and Disaster Masters projects underway. Forthcoming plans are larger space for both companies and a showroom to attract more clients.

The newlyweds enjoy being Schweitzer season pass holders. They love to ski as often as they can. Every summer they go boating on both Pend Oreille and Priest Lake. You can catch them camping on the islands and never missing The Festival at Sandpoint. “I am constantly amazed and humbled by the beauty of this place. We are truly blessed to make a living here”, says Jamie.

Sweet Lou’s New LocationMEET OWNERS CHAD AND MEGGIE FOUST

Before they met at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Chad and Meggie Foust knew they wanted to raise their families in a small town, somewhere in the northwest where both have deep family roots, while

being able to share their talents and passions within the community. Little did they know, that they would soon be living out their dreams together, starting in a small North Idaho town called Hope.

In March 2011, Chad, Meggie and Lou arrived in Sandpoint, bringing home 16 years in the restaurant industry, recipes for their favorite dishes and a business plan for an American fare family restaurant. One month later, Sweet Lou’s Restaurant and Bar opened its doors for the first season on beautiful Lake Pend Orielle in the Holiday Shores Marina in Hope.

Sweet Lou’s proudly offers something for everyone in the family, with specialties including a crowd favorite chicken fried steak, smoked prime rib, bison ribs and grilled PB&J and bacon sandwiches. All menu items are reasonably priced, fresh and made to order, all steaks are hand-cut, all burgers are freshly ground and fried items are hand-dipped.

Along with a superior menu, customer service is a top priority among all of Sweet Lou’s employees. After serving 25,000 guests in their first eight months of business in a small destination town of 250, they know what it takes to make sure all customers have a positive experience.

Earlier this year, eager to have an opportunity to share an enjoyable dining experience with even more guests, the Foust

family announced that they were opening a second location in Ponderay, Idaho. On February 3, just in time to catch the Super Bowl, Sweet Lou’s in Ponderay opened up with a full bar, a slightly larger menu with the addition of mussels, grilled shrimp and a few other delectable items, and the same dedication toward strong service and quality ingredients.

Strength Training – Free Weights and Resistance Bands Using free weights and resistance bands are a great, safe way to combat muscle loss that can be so prevalent with age. For some seniors, these are often a much better workout choice than using weights machines.

Cardio Exercise Come up with a plan for how you will attack each cardio session. A few times a week do short, intense exercise and on alternate days do longer, less intense exercise. Machines like ellipticals and stationary bikes are

ideal as they are much easier on your joints than treadmills. Utilize Personal Trainers When you are first beginning to exercise, schedule a few sessions with a personal trainer. Make sure you share with them any important information or advice that your doctor gave you and together you can begin to develop a program that is safe, but effective. Exercising is essential to staying healthy, fit, and slowing the effects of aging. Talk to a friend and join a gym as exercise buddies. Having a support system in place is key to your success! And, perhaps most important of all, remember to have fun! Every February 14, in the United States and around the world, candy, flowers and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine.

Valentine’s Day started in the time of the Roman Empire. In ancient Rome, February 14th was a holiday to honour Juno. Juno was the Queen of the Roman Gods and Goddesses. The Romans also knew her as the Goddess of women and marriage. The following day, February 15th, began the Feast of Lupercalia.

The lives of young boys and girls were strictly separate. However, one of the customs of the young people was name drawing. On the eve of the festival of Lupercalia the names of Roman girls were written on slips of paper and placed into jars. Each young man would draw a girl’s name from the jar and would then be partners for the duration of the festival with the girl whom he chose. Sometimes the pairing of the children lasted an entire year, and often, they would fall in love and would later marry. A Frenchman, Charles, Duke of Orleans is credited with writing the first Valentine card. He was captured by the English while at the battle of Agincourt in 1415. On Valentine’s Day, he sent his wife a rhyming love letter from the tower of London, where he was imprisoned. And from that single letter sent, approximately 141 million Valentine’s Day cards are exchanged annually, making Valentine’s Day the second most popular card-mailing holiday only behind Christmas.

the opening of the crafter’s mall in October of 2011. Pam has worked for many years in the community and has met many local crafter’s and artisans who lack the ability to showcase their work year round until now. With the help of friends and family, she has worked tirelessly to achieve her goals.

Pam is one of the featured vendors with her “Tre Cher Gems” fashion and fine jewelry and she has a waiting list for vender space. Pam

will soon be offerings classes in painting, crocheting, knitting, sewing and quilting. Her previous workshops have been scrapbooking and jewelry events.

Open seven days a week, there is always coffee on and a smile for everyone. Her husband, Steve, of thirty-three years managed to smile through all of the planning and construction and has been a source of encouragement and support. One booth features African headbands which all proceeds go to “Because Every Mother Matters” (BEMM.org). Over the past 33 years and currently, they volunteer with many different ministries. Recently they are very involved with “Love Inc.” Pam and Steve have realized a life long dream to give back to their community. As Pam says, “God is good all the time!”

Neurofeedback (NFB), also called neurotherapy or EEG biofeedback, is an alternative therapy for adults and children dealing with any of a wide range of physical, emotional, and mental

challenges, including attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety, panic attacks, relationship issues, addictions, fibromyalgia, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). NFB is non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical, and has a lengthy track record of use by sports professionals, therapists, and even government agencies (NASA used it in the 1960s to train astronauts).

In recent years, interest in and use of NFB has seen a resurgence due to medical discoveries regarding brain plasticity. Research is now showing that the brain can be trained to rewire itself for sharper mental acuity, more efficient performance, and better overall health. NFB offers a way to achieve this rewiring, or brainwave training, with almost no effort on the part of the trainee. Whether the result of diagnosed disorders or injuries, cognitive deterioration due to aging (including menopause), or simply the outcome of poor sleep patterns, performance anxiety, and job stress, NFB has been clinically proven to provide relief from symptoms. Most subjects (95%) achieve benefits that restore wellness and quality of life, often very quickly, without aid of drugs, surgery, or continuous medical care.

Veterans and their families in particular can benefit from NFB treatment. PTSD takes a toll, not only on the returning vet, but also on his or her family. Symptoms such as nightmares, irritability, impatience, anxiety, panic attacks, hyper-

vigilance, and alcohol/drug abuse all conspire to undermine the veteran’s ability to reintegrate into life at home. These symptoms can quickly cause problems on a number of fronts, from family interactions and work performance to impulse control and ability to function effectively in society. Needless to say, the results can be devastating. Neurofeedback can

dramatically reduce these symptoms, often within five, one-hour sessions (though 15-20 sessions are recommended to receive the full benefits of NFB in cases of PTSD).

Even young, fit individuals can use NFB to

improve performance. Numerous Olympic and professional athletes, from skiers to soccer players, use NFB to prepare for competition. Neurofeedback’s ability to help athletes improve their focus allows them to get and stay “in the zone.” In fact, members of the four-time World Cup-winning Italian soccer team called neurofeedback their “secret weapon”!

Maggie Kirscher is a senior at Sandpoint High School who plays basketball, soccer and softball. Maggie’s future plan is that she is going to fight off her severe case of senior-itus and attempt

to finish high school, major in aviation and then become a missionary pilot! She would like to attend an aviation school which will be either Rocky Mountain College, LeTourneau University or the University of North Dakota.

The worst practice she has ever had would have to be back in 8th grade when she was at softball practice and they were having a sliding practice. She said “I was so incredibly bad at it that I had to go practice with the 4th graders in their own little mud spot. Scarred me for life and probably them too.” Maggie’s favorite food is the big black olives that you can put on your fingers and play “Olive Monster” with. Her favorite teacher is Mrs. Search in the off chance she will give Maggie extra credit in math.

Gabe Lutz, a freshman from Sandpoint High School, is a four sport athlete. He plays football, baseball, basketball and wrestling. Lutz says his worst practice was P.A.T.S. for wrestling. He studies hard and achieves high grades in all subjects, which includes honor classes. He would like to be a stockbroker when he grows up because he has always been interested in it. Gabe plans on attending the University of Southern California and his favorite food is anything off an Italian menu. His favorite teacher is Mr. Swerin because he says he keeps learning interesting and fun.

Puailoa Back on TopSEARCH COMMITTEE ZEROS IN ON MITCHELL’S REPLACEMENT

When it comes to Sandpoint High School’s football program’s future, the committee commissioned with finding a new leader has zeroed in on the past. The search committee has made its recommendation to the school board that Satini Puailoa be hired as the new varsity coach. Puailoa

having coached at Sandpoint High School from 1994 to 2004 has led Sandpoint to its only State Championship in 1997. In fact, according to the archives, roughly 90% of the schools records have occurred during Puailoa’s ten years as head football coach. This will be Puailoa’s fourth time rebuilding a football program, but what makes this different than the past is he has a team that he can hit the ground running with. “When I took over the program in 1994, I not only had to coach the players, I had to coach the coaches.” Puailoa went on to say, “I now have a team of coaches that knows exactly what needs to be done.” And according to Puailoa there’s much that needs to be done in getting Sandpoint back on top. “The biggest change is getting the kids to believe that they can be great. They don’t know how good they can be!” When asked about the biggest challenges Puailoa and his staff face, he responds with positives. Any of the negatives brought up seem to present themselves as opportunities to Puailoa. “We start now and we start by building the kids up, getting them to believe and unifying them as a brotherhood.” Which according to Puailoa is the biggest reason he still loves coaching football. Having opportunities to go just about anywhere and coach Puailoa has chosen to stay right here in Sandpoint. “I stay here because of him,” as he points over to one of his assistant coaches Chris Lassen. “I stay here because I love it here. I love the community, the kids and the coaches with whom I have formed a brotherhood with.” To see Puailoa and Lassen together and how they interact with one another would be as Puailoa described, “an old married couple”. They have been coaching together since 1999 and for the past 13 years have created a bond that “can’t be broke,” according to Lassen. When asked, what message you would like everyone to hear, Puailoa stopped and thought for a second and then said, “that we’re here to make sure each player has fun and when players are having fun, the winning will take care of itself.” And as Puailoa is finishing his thought, Lassen with a kid-like smile ads, “were back, the program is back and its going to be a great experience for everyone.”
